If page.url() reports about:blank, Puppeteer is reporting the URL of that page’s main frame—not confirming that navigation has happened. Await the navigation, then read the URL from the same Page object. If the value is literally an empty string or missing, log it exactly and check how your code is producing the value: Puppeteer’s documented initial blank page is about:blank, not an empty string.
First, confirm what “blank” means
Log the exact value rather than testing only whether it is truthy. Puppeteer documents page.url() as the page’s URL and as a shortcut for page.mainFrame().url(). The method reads the current main-frame URL; it does not start navigation or wait for navigation to finish. The initial blank document is represented as about:blank. Puppeteer Page.url() API reference
console.log({ url: page.url() });
If the log shows about:blank, the page may still be at its initial document, you may be reading too early, or you may be inspecting a different page or frame than the one that navigated. If it shows an empty string, undefined, or no value, inspect the surrounding logging and application code as well; the API reference does not describe those as the normal return value.
For direct navigation, await page.goto()
Pass a URL that includes its scheme, such as https://, and wait for goto() to resolve before checking the page. Puppeteer documents that goto() resolves to the main resource response, or can return null in specified cases.

const requested = 'https://example.com';
const response = await page.goto(requested);
console.log({
requested,
current: page.url(),
status: response?.status(),
});
The requested address and current address need not match: a redirect can leave the page at a different final URL. The response status describes the navigation response; page.url() reports the current main-frame URL. Puppeteer Page.goto() API reference
For navigation caused by a click, start waiting first
When an action triggers navigation, register waitForNavigation() before performing the action. Starting the wait afterward can miss the navigation. Puppeteer documents this pattern:
const [response] = await Promise.all([
page.waitForNavigation(),
page.click('a.navigate'),
]);
console.log({ current: page.url(), status: response?.status() });
Use the selector for the link or control in your page. If the action does not cause a navigation, the navigation wait will not resolve successfully; make sure the action is expected to navigate before treating this pattern as a fix. Puppeteer Page.waitForNavigation() API reference
Check which page, frame, and URL you are inspecting
Main frame versus iframe
page.url() reads the main frame’s URL. If the destination is inside an iframe, inspect that frame rather than assuming the top-level page URL will change. Puppeteer’s frame API exposes the frame URL:
Rank #3
const frame = page.frames().find((candidate) => candidate.url().includes('example.com'));
console.log({ frameUrl: frame?.url(), pageUrl: page.url() });
Adjust the matching condition to identify the frame you expect; URLs can change or appear in more than one frame.
Original tab versus popup or new tab
If a click opens a popup or new tab, the original page may remain at about:blank or its prior URL. Inspect the newly created page rather than assuming the original object changed. Puppeteer documents page URL access on each Page object; the supplied code or runtime details determine which object should be read.
Rank #4
Requested URL versus redirect destination
Record both the requested URL and page.url() after navigation resolves. A redirect can make the final page URL differ from the URL passed to goto(); the response may represent the final main-resource response in the redirect chain.
Account for single-page application URL changes
A site can change its URL using the History API without a conventional full-page load. Puppeteer’s Page documentation says History API URL changes count as navigation for waitForNavigation(). Start the wait before the action that changes the URL, then inspect page.url() after the wait resolves, using the same Promise.all pattern shown above. Puppeteer Page API reference

Interpret a null navigation response correctly
A null return from goto() is not, on its own, evidence that navigation failed. Puppeteer specifically documents successful navigation to about:blank and same-URL navigation that changes only the hash as cases where goto() returns null. Check the resulting page.url() and the kind of navigation you requested before diagnosing a failure. Puppeteer Page.goto() API reference
Use this diagnostic sequence
- Log the exact value: use
console.log({ url: page.url() })to distinguishabout:blankfrom an empty or missing value. - For direct navigation: await
page.goto('https://…')before readingpage.url(). - For action-triggered navigation: place
page.waitForNavigation()and the click or action together inPromise.all, with the wait first. - For SPA changes: use the same wait-before-action ordering for the History API change.
- Verify the object: determine whether the target is the original page, a popup page, or an iframe frame.
- Compare results: distinguish the requested URL, final main-frame URL, and navigation response; account for documented
nullresponse cases. - If remote HTTP navigation fails: look for the specific browser error described below before changing launch options.
When the browser reports ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT
Puppeteer’s official troubleshooting guide describes a Chrome for Testing behavior in which remote HTTP navigation may trigger net::ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT and show a warning page. Check whether that exact error is present in the navigation failure or browser output. The guide’s launch-flag workaround applies to that specific behavior; it is not a general remedy for every page that still reports about:blank. Puppeteer troubleshooting guide
Common symptoms and what to check
| Symptom | What it points to | Next check |
|---|---|---|
about:blank immediately after creating a page |
The page is still on its initial blank document, or navigation has not completed. | Await the intended navigation before calling page.url(). |
about:blank after clicking a link |
The wait may have started too late, the click may open a popup, or the action may not navigate the original page. | Register the navigation wait before the click and inspect the relevant page object. |
| The top-level URL stays the same while embedded content changes | The destination may be in an iframe. | Inspect the matching frame URL. |
goto() returns null |
This can be expected for about:blank or a same-URL hash-only navigation. |
Check page.url() and whether the requested navigation is one of those cases. |
Remote HTTP navigation fails with net::ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT |
The specific Chrome for Testing behavior covered by Puppeteer troubleshooting may apply. | Confirm the exact error, then follow the matching official troubleshooting guidance. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you only need a screenshot of a URL rather than a Puppeteer debugging session, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-call screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. AI agents can take screenshots through its MCP server, and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
