Most PlayStation Store download and installation failures can be resolved by working in this order: check PlayStation service status and record the exact error, verify the purchasing account and licenses, confirm storage and system software, retry the download, then use Safe Mode repairs. Rebuilding the database is a non-destructive repair; resetting or reinstalling system software can erase data and should be a last resort after a backup.
Start with the exact symptom and error
Before changing settings, note what the console actually does. Record the error code or message exactly, whether the download stays at 0%, stops part-way, fails during installation, or shows a padlock, and the time it happened. Take a screenshot or short video if possible. PlayStation Support asks for the code, detailed reproduction steps, a timestamp, and screenshots or video when you request help; collecting these details at the start avoids repeating tests later.
Check service status first
A PlayStation Store or network-service outage can make a healthy console appear broken. Check the official PlayStation service-status page before deleting a download or changing licenses. If the service is experiencing an incident, wait until it is resolved and retry the same download. Keep the recorded code and time even if the status page later returns to normal.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
- Download never starts or remains at 0%: service availability, account access, storage, or a stalled transfer are the first checks.
- Download stops or installation fails: retry the transfer, confirm free space and system software, then use Safe Mode repairs.
- A padlock appears or purchased content is missing: confirm that you are signed in to the buying account and restore licenses.
- An error code appears: use the official PlayStation error-code hub for instructions specific to that code and console.
Confirm that your account can use the game
A game can be visible in the Store yet remain unavailable to the account currently signed in. Ownership and console-sharing settings determine whether a digital purchase can be downloaded or launched.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the purchasing account and transaction
- Sign in to the PlayStation Network account that bought the game or redeemed it.
- Open the account’s transaction history and verify that the purchase is present.
- If the game came through PlayStation Plus, confirm that the subscription is active and that the title is still available under its terms.
- If another account bought the game, verify that the console-sharing or primary-console setting for that account grants access on this console.
A padlock commonly indicates a license or entitlement problem rather than a damaged download. Do not delete saves while investigating ownership; first establish which account owns the content.
Restore licenses without deleting data
After confirming ownership, restore the account’s licenses. PlayStation states that restoring licenses will not affect your data.
| Console | Menu path |
|---|---|
| PS5 | Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses |
| PS4 | Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses |
Run the restore while signed in to the account that owns the game, then return to the game library and try the download or launch again. If the transaction is absent, the subscription has expired, or console sharing is not configured for the owning account, license restoration cannot create an entitlement that the account does not have.

Compare required and available space
Open the game’s Store or library details and note the minimum free-space requirement shown there. Then check the console’s available storage in Settings > Storage. The free-space figure must meet the requirement before the download and installation can complete. A partially downloaded item can also occupy space, so deleting a failed transfer may be necessary before retrying.
Do not infer the requirement from the game’s advertised download size or from another edition. Use the requirement displayed for the exact PS5 or PS4 version you are installing.

Install the latest system software
Check for a system-software update and install it before repeating the download. Store compatibility and installation behavior can depend on the console software version. After the update finishes, restart the console and retry the game from the library.
Retry a stalled or failed download
Both consoles provide pause/resume controls and allow a failed item to be canceled and downloaded again from the library. Use the least destructive retry first.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Pause and resume
- Open the downloads or notifications queue and select the affected game.
- Choose Pause, wait briefly, and choose Resume.
- Watch whether the percentage advances or the installation proceeds.
If the item immediately returns to the same error or remains unchanged, stop repeatedly toggling it and move to a fresh download.
Cancel, delete, and start a fresh library download
- Open the download queue and select the failed or stuck game.
- Choose the cancel/delete option and confirm removal of the incomplete transfer.
- Open Game Library, find the purchased title, and select Download again.
- Leave the console on the download screen long enough to confirm that the transfer begins and the installation phase completes.
Deleting the incomplete download is different from deleting saved-game data. The game can be downloaded again from the owning account’s library, while local saves should be preserved unless you deliberately remove them.
Try a wired connection
If the transfer or subsequent game launch remains unreliable, connect the console to the network with Ethernet and retry. PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance identifies a wired connection as a useful test for download and launch problems. A wired retry helps distinguish a transfer-path problem from an account, storage, or console-software problem; it does not repair an invalid license or an insufficient-storage condition.

Use Safe Mode when normal retries fail
Safe Mode starts the console with a limited set of maintenance functions. The controller must be connected by a USB cable that carries data, not only power. If the controller is not detected, try another data-capable USB cable before assuming the console cannot enter Safe Mode.
Enter Safe Mode on either console
- Turn the console completely off; do not leave it in Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the power button. Release it after you hear the second beep.
- Connect the controller to the console with the USB cable.
- Press the controller’s PS button when prompted.
Safe Mode options differ by model. Use the least destructive repair that addresses the symptom.
PS5 maintenance choices
- Clear System Software Cache: clears temporary system data that can interfere with normal operation.
- Rebuild Database: scans the drive and creates a new database of content on the system. It is intended to repair catalog or indexing problems without the data-erasing effect of a reset.
Try Clear System Software Cache first when it is available, restart the PS5, and test the download. If the problem remains, return to Safe Mode and select Rebuild Database.
PS4 maintenance choice
- Rebuild Database: scans the drive and creates a new database of all content on the system.
After the PS4 finishes rebuilding, allow it to restart fully before opening the Store or library and starting the download again.
What rebuilding does—and does not do
Rebuilding repairs the system’s content index; it does not grant ownership, add storage, or bypass an active service outage. The process can take time, especially on a drive containing a large amount of content. Do not turn off the console while it is working.

The same decision order applies to both systems: service, entitlement, storage and software, transfer retry, then Safe Mode. Only the menu labels and license path differ.
Protect your data before destructive options
Safe Mode also contains reset and system-software-reinstallation choices. These are not routine download fixes. PlayStation warns that some Safe Mode options result in data loss and recommends backing up to a USB drive or cloud storage before selecting them.
- Back up saved data and any other files you cannot replace.
- Confirm that you know the sign-in details for every account used on the console.
- Try license restoration, a fresh download, cache clearing (PS5), and database rebuilding first.
- Use reset or reinstall only when the problem persists and you accept the possibility of removing user data.
When system-software reinstallation is justified
Consider reinstalling system software only after the non-destructive steps fail, the account entitlement is valid, storage is sufficient, and the service is operating normally. Reinstallation has a dedicated Safe Mode procedure and requires the correct system-software file and a compatible USB drive prepared according to PlayStation’s instructions. Because the procedure can erase the console, follow the current official reinstallation guide for your model rather than relying on an old USB layout or file.

“Something went wrong” during installation
- Record the full code and time shown on screen.
- Check available storage against the requirement in the game’s details.
- Install any pending system-software update.
- Cancel the incomplete item, download it again from the library, and test with a wired connection if possible.
- If it fails again, use the model’s Safe Mode cache and database options.
A generic message is not enough to identify one cause; the error code is the key to model-specific instructions.
Download stuck at 0%
Check service status, then pause and resume once. If there is no progress, cancel the item and begin a fresh library download. Before retrying, verify the purchasing account, license, free space, and system software. Repeatedly restarting a transfer without checking those conditions usually reproduces the same failure.

Padlock or missing purchased game
Sign in to the buying account, verify the transaction or PlayStation Plus entitlement, and check console sharing or the PS4 primary-console setting used by the owning account. Restore licenses using the correct console menu path. If the purchase is not in transaction history, contact PlayStation Support with the account and transaction details rather than treating the issue as a damaged installation.
Error code returns after a database rebuild
Use the official error-code hub for the exact code. Keep the code, reproduction steps, timestamp, and screenshots or video. If the code’s instructions lead to system-software reinstallation, complete a backup first and understand that the procedure may remove local data.
Escalate with useful evidence
Contact PlayStation Support or the official Repairs service when the service is available, the correct account owns the game, storage and software are adequate, a fresh download fails, and Safe Mode repairs have not helped. Supply:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Console model (PS5 or PS4) and system-software version.
- Game title and whether it is a purchase, disc installation, or PlayStation Plus entitlement.
- Exact error code and message.
- What you selected and the result at each step.
- Date and time of the failure, plus screenshots or video.
This evidence lets support distinguish an entitlement issue, a service-side failure, a storage or transfer fault, and a console-software problem without asking you to repeat undocumented steps.
A safe order of operations
- Check service status and capture the exact message, code, time, and evidence.
- Verify the purchasing account, transaction or subscription, and console-sharing or primary-console access.
- Restore licenses from the correct PS5 or PS4 menu.
- Confirm the game’s displayed free-space requirement and available storage.
- Update system software and restart the console.
- Pause/resume the transfer; if needed, cancel/delete it and download again from the library.
- Try Ethernet for a clean transfer test.
- Enter Safe Mode, clear the PS5 system-software cache when applicable, and rebuild the database.
- Back up data before considering reset or system-software reinstallation.
- Escalate with the code, steps, timestamp, and media evidence if the failure remains.
This sequence preserves data while moving from checks that take minutes to repairs with greater risk. Stop before any reset or reinstall unless your backup is complete and the official model-specific instructions are in front of you.
