A PS2 game on PS5 is not installed from an original PS2 disc. It is a specific digital Store release, remaster or remake, or an eligible PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog title. To fix a failure, first confirm that the exact edition is offered for your account and region, then use the correct download path. For a stuck download, pause and resume it, cancel and delete it, and restart it from Game Library. If installation finishes but the game will not launch, restore the entitlement, redownload the title, and move it to the PS5’s internal storage if it is on USB extended storage.
The steps below separate account and catalog problems from network, storage, and software problems, so you can stop once you find the cause.
What “PS2 Classic” means on a PS5
On PS5, “PS2 Classic” describes a current digital release of a game that originated on PlayStation 2. The release may be an emulated Classic, a remaster, a remake, or another Store edition. Sony’s PlayStation Plus guidance says remastered or remake versions of PS2 and PS3 games can be downloaded for play on PS4 and PS5. The original PS2 disc is not part of this PS5 download process.
Availability is tied to the exact title, edition and region. A game that appears in one country’s Store or Classics Catalog may be absent in another, and a title can leave a subscription catalog while remaining purchasable as a separate Store release. Search the current PS5 Store page or the Classics Catalog entry for the name and edition you intend to use.

Identify which entitlement you are using
- Purchased Store release: You bought that digital edition. It should remain in the purchasing account’s Game Library, subject to the account and Store region.
- PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog: Your subscription grants access while the tier is eligible and the game remains in the catalog. Sony identifies PlayStation Plus Premium as the tier that provides Classics Catalog access.
- Remaster or remake: This is a separate digital product from the original PS2 release. A PS2 disc or a different edition does not automatically supply its license.
Write down the exact title, edition and region before troubleshooting. Similar names can represent separate products with separate licenses.
Use the correct PS5 download path
For a Classics Catalog game, open Games home > PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Classics Catalog, select the game, and choose Download. You can also locate entitled games through Game Library. If you do not see a Download button, check whether the title is still in the catalog, whether your subscription tier includes Classics, and whether you are signed into the account that owns the purchase or subscription.
- On the PS5 home screen, open PlayStation Plus.
- Select Benefits, then Classics Catalog.
- Open the exact game listing and verify the edition shown on its page.
- Select Download. For a purchased release, use Game Library > Your Collection if it is not shown in the catalog.
- Open Downloads/Uploads from the control center to watch the transfer and installation status.
If the listing offers only a purchase price, the title is not currently included with your subscription in that region. If it is not listed at all, do not assume that a PS2 disc, another account, or a different edition will make it eligible.
When a PS2 Classic download will not start
A download that sits at “Queued,” repeatedly fails, or never begins is usually a transfer, service, account, or catalog issue. Follow these actions in order; each one changes a different part of the process.

- Pause and resume the transfer. Open the control center, choose Downloads/Uploads, select the affected item, and choose Pause. Wait a few seconds, then choose Resume. A temporary connection or service interruption can clear without deleting the partial data.
- Cancel the failed job. If resuming does not work, return to the same item and choose Cancel and Delete. This removes the incomplete download, not your account purchase.
- Start again from Game Library. Open Game Library, find the exact title, and select Download. For a Plus title, confirm that the entry still shows catalog access before starting.
- Check PlayStation service status. A Store or account outage can prevent a valid download from starting. If a service incident is shown, wait until it is resolved rather than repeatedly deleting the job.
- Update PS5 system software. Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and install any available update. Restart the console after the update.
- Verify the account and transaction. Confirm that the signed-in user is the purchaser. For a subscription title, verify that PlayStation Plus Premium is active and that the game remains in the relevant catalog. For a purchase, check Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Transaction History for the transaction.
- Retry only after the entitlement is confirmed. If the purchase, subscription, or catalog entry is not present for that account and region, a network reset will not create access; resolve the entitlement issue first.
Do not repeatedly cancel a download while a service outage is in progress. Once service status is normal and the account is confirmed, a fresh Game Library download provides the cleanest retry.
When installation is stuck or never completes
“Downloading” and “installing” are separate stages. A transfer can reach 100 percent while the console is still unpacking, verifying, or applying the game data. Leave adequate free space for both the downloaded package and the installed files; a nearly full drive can stop the second stage even when the download itself succeeded.
Check the status before deleting anything
- Open Downloads/Uploads and note whether the item reports a network percentage, “Installing,” or an error code.
- If the percentage is still moving, allow the process to finish and keep the PS5 powered on or in a supported rest-mode configuration.
- If the status has not changed for a prolonged period and no error is displayed, restart the PS5, then check the item again.
- If the console reports insufficient space, delete or move unrelated games and media, then restart the installation from the title’s Game Library page.
Use a clean reinstall when the package is damaged
When installation repeatedly stops at the same point, cancel and delete the title from Downloads/Uploads, restart the console, and download it again from Game Library. A wired network connection is preferable for the retry because it removes wireless interference as a variable. Do not remove saved data unless support specifically instructs you; deleting the game application and redownloading it normally leaves saves intact.

Launch failures include a crash back to the home screen, an error immediately after selecting the game, or an application that remains on its opening screen. Sony’s recommended sequence is to restart, restore licenses, redownload, update system software, and then rebuild the database in Safe Mode. Use the sequence below so that each step is tested before the next one.

- Restart the PS5. Select Power > Restart PS5 from the control center. Launch the game after the console returns to the home screen.
- Restore licenses. Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, select Restore, and wait for the process to finish. This does not delete games or saved data.
- Redownload the game. Delete the installed application, then download it again from Game Library. Use a wired connection if possible and do not interrupt the transfer.
- Install the latest system software. Check Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings before testing the new installation.
- Move the title to internal storage. If it is installed on a USB extended-storage drive, go to the game on the home screen, press the options button, choose Move Games and Apps, and move the title to the PS5 console storage. Sony specifically requires moving game data to internal storage when a title installed on USB extended storage will not launch.
- Rebuild the database in Safe Mode. Turn off the PS5 completely. Press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep, connect the controller with a USB cable, and choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database. This reorganizes content records; it is not the same as deleting the console or factory-resetting it.
If the game starts after moving it internally, the problem was related to the external-storage installation path. If it still fails from internal storage after a clean download and database rebuild, record the exact message and escalate it rather than repeatedly reinstalling.
Fix a padlock, missing game, or sudden crash

A padlock normally means the current user cannot verify the license. Sign into the account that purchased the Store release, or confirm that the PlayStation Plus account is active and the title is still available in the catalog. If another user owns the game, that owner must enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on this PS5. The setting is under Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
Then restore licenses at Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. Restoring licenses does not affect saved data and can resolve a padlock, a missing game or add-on, or a crash caused by an entitlement that the console has not refreshed.

Game missing from Game Library
Check the purchasing account’s transaction history and confirm the Store region. A title removed from the Classics Catalog may disappear from the subscription route even though a separately purchased edition remains in the purchaser’s library. Conversely, a catalog entitlement does not prove that you bought the game outright. Use the listing’s edition name to distinguish those cases.

Crash after previously successful launches
First test the account and license conditions above, then restart the PS5. If the crash persists, delete and redownload the application, install current system software, and test from internal storage. Keep any error code exactly as displayed; small differences identify different failure paths.
Storage: internal PS5 drive or USB extended storage?
A compatible USB extended-storage SSD or HDD is useful for managing capacity, but it is not a universal repair. It cannot restore a missing license, bring back a removed catalog entry, fix an account mismatch, or repair a PlayStation service outage.

Before moving a game, close it and use the PS5’s Move Games and Apps command. Do not disconnect the drive while data is being moved or while the game is running.

PlayStation Plus Premium may offer a Stream option for eligible Classics Catalog games. Sony specifies a minimum broadband connection of 5 Mbps for streaming. Streaming does not install the complete game locally, so it uses network bandwidth instead of local storage.

Open the game’s Classics Catalog page and choose Stream when it is offered. Streaming is a diagnostic option as well as a way to play; it does not convert a title into a permanent purchase or bypass catalog removal.
Purchased Store release versus Plus Classics Catalog access
These access models behave differently, so use the correct expectation when a title disappears or shows a padlock.

Download, stream, and storage decisions at a glance
Use this short decision framework after identifying the edition:
- The Download button is missing: verify the account, region, subscription tier, and current catalog listing before troubleshooting the network.
- The download is queued or fails: pause and resume, then cancel and delete and restart from Game Library; check service status and system software.
- Installation stops: check free space, restart, and perform a clean redownload, preferably over a wired connection.
- The game will not launch from USB: move it to internal PS5 storage, then follow the launch sequence.
- Streaming works but downloading does not: investigate local storage, transfer, and installation rather than assuming the entitlement is invalid.
- Neither streaming nor downloading works: recheck account ownership, subscription status, catalog availability, region, and PlayStation service status.
What to give PlayStation Support
If the problem remains after the applicable steps, contact PlayStation Support with reproducible details. Include:
- The exact title name, edition and Store region.
- The account used and whether the release was purchased or accessed through PlayStation Plus.
- Your PlayStation Plus tier and subscription status, if applicable.
- Whether the failure occurs during download, installation, or launch.
- The complete error code or message, copied exactly.
- The date and time of the attempt, including your time zone if relevant.
- The storage location: internal PS5 storage or a USB extended-storage drive.
- The steps that reproduce the failure, in order.
- A screenshot or short video showing the error, padlock, or stalled status when possible.
Support can then distinguish an entitlement defect, a service incident, a title-specific compatibility issue, or corrupted local data without making you repeat unrelated steps.

Start by treating the PS2 Classic as a current digital product, not as a PS2 disc. Confirm the exact edition, region, account, subscription and catalog status; use PlayStation Plus > Benefits > Classics Catalog > Download or the purchasing account’s Game Library. For a failed transfer, pause and resume, then cancel and restart after checking service status and system software. For a game that installs but will not start, restore licenses, redownload it, and move it from USB extended storage to the PS5’s internal storage.
