If Pokémon Pokopia will not update on Nintendo Switch 2, use the HOME-menu manual update first: connect the console to the internet, highlight Pokopia without opening it, press + or −, choose Software Update, then Over the Internet. The current version listed by Nintendo is Ver. 2.0.1, released September 7, 2026. Nintendo says the update is required for internet features, does not remove save data, and needs enough free storage.

This guide covers stalled downloads, error-code situations, missing Expansion Pass content, freezes or loading-screen failures, and multiplayer that remains unavailable. Follow the section matching your symptom rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.

Update Pokémon Pokopia manually

Before you start

  • Connect Nintendo Switch 2 to the internet and run a connection test. A failed test must be fixed before a game update can download.
  • Keep the console connected to power, particularly for a large download.
  • Check that the console has free internal or microSD Express storage. Nintendo does not publish a Pokopia-specific free-space number, so the practical test is whether the download can begin and complete.
  • Close Pokopia before checking for an update. The manual update command is available when the game is highlighted on HOME, not running.

Use the HOME-menu update command

  1. Open the Nintendo Switch 2 HOME Menu.
  2. Highlight the Pokémon Pokopia icon, but do not start the game.
  3. Press the + or − button to open the software options.
  4. Select Software Update.
  5. Select Over the Internet.
  6. Wait for the download and installation to finish, then start Pokopia.

Nintendo states that “This update must be applied in order to use the game’s Internet features.” Applying it does not delete your save: Nintendo also says, “Save data will still be available for use after downloading the update.” All players joining the same multiplayer session must be on the same software version.

If the update option says the game is current

Check the installed build from the same software-options screen or from the title’s information display. Nintendo’s currently listed build is Ver. 2.0.1. If another player has a different build, have that player run the same Software Update > Over the Internet procedure before trying multiplayer again.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

What Ver. 2.0.1 fixes

Ver. 2.0.1 was released on September 7, 2026. Nintendo’s notes identify several problems that can look like an update failure because the game freezes, loops, or never finishes loading.

Version Release date Changes listed by Nintendo
Ver. 2.0.1 September 7, 2026 Fixes repeated Ho-Oh and Lugia descents and reappearances; Pokédex searches that fail to find Pokémon; a relocation kit that cannot be picked up; repeating sound effects; game freezes; and loading-screen stalls.
Ver. 2.0.0 August 4, 2026 Adds Dive, underwater house building, the portal pod and safe items, and dynamic Ditto print.
Ver. 1.1.1 June 18, 2026 Fixes problems caused when placed items exceeded an area limit and a Ditto facial-expression problem during camera emotes.

The patches are cumulative. Installing Ver. 2.0.1 includes the earlier fixes and features; you do not need to locate each older package separately.

When a Pokopia download will not start or is stuck

1. Confirm the network test

Open the Switch 2 internet settings and run a connection test. If it fails, move the console closer to the access point, restart the network equipment, or try a different connection. If the test displays an error code, use Nintendo’s official error-code guidance for that exact code; different codes can indicate different account, DNS, wireless, or service conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Free storage before retrying

An update cannot begin or finish when the destination storage is full. Nintendo does not state a required number of free gigabytes for Pokopia, so do not rely on an internet estimate. Instead, check available space in the console’s data-management settings and remove games or captures you no longer need. Delete software data only when you are comfortable redownloading it; do not select the save-data deletion command.

  • HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.

A compatible Nintendo Switch 2 microSD Express card can provide additional space for an update or DLC redownload. Nintendo does not identify a specific model or capacity in the update guidance. Verify that a card is listed as compatible with Switch 2 before buying it, and make sure the card is installed according to the console’s instructions.

3. Restart and retry the manual update

  1. Save and close any open software.
  2. Restart Nintendo Switch 2 from the power menu. If the console is unresponsive, hold the power button until it shuts down, then turn it on again.
  3. Reconnect to the internet and run another connection test.
  4. Highlight Pokopia on HOME and repeat + or − > Software Update > Over the Internet.

A restart clears a paused transfer and re-establishes the console’s network session without touching Pokopia save data.

4. Distinguish a slow download from a failed one

A progress bar that moves slowly can reflect the connection or Nintendo’s service load; leave the console connected to power and avoid repeatedly cancelling it. A bar that never moves, returns immediately to the HOME Menu, or reports insufficient storage is a failure condition. Free space and restart first, then retry once. Repeated retries without changing either the storage or network condition are unlikely to help.

Fixing freezes and loading-screen stalls after updating

First verify that the software-options screen reports Ver. 2.0.1 or a later build. That release specifically addresses freezes and situations in which the game remains on the loading screen. If the console downloaded an update but the behavior remains:

Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
  1. Close Pokopia completely from the HOME Menu.
  2. Restart Nintendo Switch 2.
  3. Start Pokopia again and test the location or activity that previously failed.
  4. If the issue persists, check for the update again; an interrupted installation may have left the older build active.

Do not delete save data as a first response. Nintendo’s update process is designed to preserve it, and deleting a save is different from deleting software data for a redownload.

Recovering missing Expansion Pass DLC

A game update and DLC entitlement are separate checks. If Pokopia updated but Expansion Pass content is absent, follow Nintendo’s ownership sequence in order.

Verify the system and game updates

  1. Install the latest Nintendo Switch 2 system update available to the console.
  2. Install the latest Pokopia software update using the HOME-menu procedure above.
  3. Restart the console after both updates finish.

Check the purchasing account and virtual game card

  1. Open Nintendo eShop with the user account that purchased the Expansion Pass.
  2. Open the Expansion Pass listing and confirm that it shows Purchased.
  3. Select the purchased item and load the virtual game card, or enable Online License and choose Download Data.
  4. Start Pokopia and open Pokédex > Downloadable Content > Check Items.

If the listing does not show Purchased, you are probably using a different Nintendo Account from the one that bought the pass. Signing into another user does not transfer the entitlement.

Redownload a physical key-card copy

For a physical key card, remove the card from the HOME Menu or while the console is powered off. Delete the Pokopia software data, taking care not to delete save data. Reinsert the key card to trigger the software redownload, install the latest update, and redownload the DLC. This sequence recreates the installed software while retaining the save.

Redownload Pokopia through the virtual game card or through Download Data, apply the update, and run Pokédex > Downloadable Content > Check Items again. If Nintendo eShop shows the pass as purchased but the content still does not appear after these steps, contact Nintendo Support with the purchasing account and console details.

Check whether the content has actually released

The Expansion Pass is being delivered in parts. Part 1, Bubbly Basin, released August 4, 2026. Part 2 is scheduled for late 2026, and Part 3 is scheduled for 2027. Parts 2 and 3 cannot be accessed before their release windows; their absence is not a failed download.

Why online play or Link Play is unavailable

Online-service requirements

Nintendo says online play requires both an internet connection and a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Confirm that the user launching the online feature has access to the required membership, then run a console connection test. An updated game without the membership or a working connection will still be unable to use online features.

Match every player’s software version

Players using their own copies must have the same Pokopia software version. Have every participant highlight the game on HOME and run Software Update > Over the Internet. A session can fail even when your own console is current if another player is still on an older build.

Unlock Link Play through normal progress

Link Play is not necessarily available from a new save. Nintendo states that it unlocks after approximately 30 minutes of play and reaching Environment Level 2. Some multiplayer options require additional progress. If the Link Play menu is missing shortly after starting the game, meet those progression requirements before treating it as an update problem.

Symptom-based troubleshooting table

Symptom Most likely check Next action
Download never starts Connection test or available storage Fix the network connection, free storage, restart the console, and retry the HOME-menu update.
Download stops or reports an error code Code-specific network or account condition Record the exact code and follow Nintendo’s guidance for that code; do not guess at a Pokopia-specific fix.
DLC is absent after the update Purchasing account, “Purchased” status, or virtual game-card/Online License state Use the DLC recovery sequence, then run Pokédex > Downloadable Content > Check Items.
Expansion Pass part is not visible Release schedule Confirm whether the part has released. Part 2 is planned for late 2026 and Part 3 for 2027.
Game freezes or stays on a loading screen Installed build Confirm Ver. 2.0.1, close and restart Pokopia, then retry the affected activity.
Online play is unavailable Nintendo Switch Online, internet, or mismatched versions Verify the membership and connection, then update every player’s copy to the same version.
Link Play menu is missing Progression gate Play for approximately 30 minutes, reach Environment Level 2, and continue any additional progress required by the mode.

What not to delete when troubleshooting

  • Save data: Keep it unless you deliberately intend to erase your progress. Nintendo says the normal update leaves save data available.
  • Software data: This is the redownloadable game installation. Nintendo’s DLC recovery instructions use its deletion for both physical key-card and digital copies.
  • DLC entitlement: Deleting software does not change whether the purchasing account owns the Expansion Pass. Confirm the eShop listing before assuming the purchase is missing.

When a redownload is necessary, ensure there is enough storage first. Otherwise the same failure can recur immediately after deletion.

When to contact Nintendo Support

Escalate after the connection test succeeds, storage is available, the console and game are updated, and the appropriate physical or digital redownload sequence has been completed. Include the exact error code if one appeared, whether the copy is a physical key card or digital, the account’s Expansion Pass status, the installed Pokopia version, and the step at which the problem returns. Those details distinguish a network failure from an entitlement, installation, or game-specific fault.
