Pokémon Neo Ultra is an unofficial difficulty hack of Pokémon Ultra Sun. Download failures, missing features and incompatible-save warnings usually come from using the wrong build, skipping the supplied README, mixing game regions or versions, or replacing files without preserving the existing save. Start with the creator’s release thread and its linked files, follow README.txt, and make a separate copy of your save before changing anything.
This guide separates a failed download from a bad installation, an update problem, a genuine save failure and a documented Neo Ultra bug. The recovery steps differ for Citra and a real 3DS; official Nintendo update and corrupted-save instructions do not automatically apply to a fan-made ROM hack.
What Pokémon Neo Ultra is—and which files to trust
Neo Ultra is a fan-made modification of Pokémon Ultra Sun, not an official Nintendo release. The creator describes it as a fresh Ultra Sun experience with more than 100 new forms, new Mega Evolutions, a substantially changed Pokédex and broad Pokémon buffs. Those are project features, not independently audited statistics.

The creator’s release thread is the starting point for the current download and documentation. It links to a Google Drive folder and tells players to “follow the README.txt for installation instructions!” Treat that README and the files linked from the release thread as authoritative. A random mirror may be incomplete, outdated or built for a different base-game version.

The same release thread points to the project Discord for updates and bug reports. Keep the thread, README and Discord details together when troubleshooting so that helpers can identify the exact build you installed.
First, identify the failure
Do not overwrite the game or save until you know which symptom you have. Use this triage table to choose the least-destructive next step.

Why Pokémon Neo Ultra will not download
Use the release thread, not an unverified mirror
Open the creator’s current release thread and use the download/documentation folder linked there. Confirm that the folder contains the README named by the creator and that the archive finishes downloading before you extract or patch anything. If a mirror uses a different filename, omits the README or offers a build number not mentioned in the thread, stop and verify it in the project Discord rather than treating it as an equivalent source.
Read README.txt before moving files
The README is the project’s installation contract. It may specify the required Ultra Sun dump, region, patch order, emulator settings or folder layout. Follow those instructions before replacing a game file. If you already have a working installation, copy its entire game folder and save first; then perform the new installation in a separate folder when the README allows it. This gives you a known-good rollback instead of a single, altered copy.
Check the base game and region
Neo Ultra modifies Ultra Sun. A file intended for Ultra Moon, a different regional release or a different revision can fail to boot, load as the unmodified game or reject an existing save. Record the base title, region and version shown by your own dump or emulator, then compare those details with the README. Do not infer compatibility from a similar filename.

Rule out an incomplete archive
If extraction reports a CRC, unexpected-end-of-file or missing-file error, delete only the incomplete download and download it again from the creator’s linked folder. Keep the original working game and save untouched. Do not “repair” an archive by downloading individual files from unrelated sites; that can create a mixture of builds that the project documentation does not support.
Keep paths simple and preserve free space
Extract to a local folder with a short path and enough free storage for both the archive and the extracted files. Avoid moving files while the archive is still extracting. Once extraction completes, compare the resulting folders with the README’s expected layout. A launcher that points to the old unmodified ROM can make a successful patch look like a failed download.
How to install or update Neo Ultra without losing your save
1. Make a dated backup before changing anything
Back up the save before an update, patch, emulator change or save-editor operation. Keep one untouched copy outside the game directory and give it a descriptive name containing the date, platform and build. Do not open the only copy in a save editor. If the new build fails, you can restore the original instead of trying to reconstruct progress.
2. Record the current installation
Write down the Neo Ultra build, the base Ultra Sun region/version, the platform or emulator, and the exact game file you currently launch. This information matters when an update introduces a save-format or compatibility change. Screenshots of the emulator’s game entry and the title screen are useful when asking the project Discord for help.
3. Install the new build beside the old one when possible
Use the README’s update procedure. Unless it explicitly says to overwrite a file, keep the old game folder and install the new build in a separate location. Launch the new build once with a disposable test save, if the documentation permits, before importing your real save. This confirms that the game itself boots before you involve valuable data.

4. Import only the save file the instructions identify
Do not copy an entire old folder over a new installation. Save containers can include metadata that belongs to a particular title or version. Copy the specific save file named by the README, retain the backup, and launch the game. If the new build reports an incompatible save, close it and restore the backup; do not repeatedly accept prompts that offer to erase data.
5. Keep official updates separate from Neo Ultra updates
Nintendo’s official Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon support page says update data became available on February 6, 2018, that “Save data will still be available for use after downloading the update,” and that the newest version appears on the title screen. Those statements describe official Nintendo software. They do not guarantee that installing an official update will update a fan-made Neo Ultra build or preserve a modified save. Use the Neo Ultra README for the hack itself.
Where to find the Citra Neo Ultra save file
For Citra, the creator’s documented method is the safest way to locate the correct save:
- Open Citra’s home screen and locate the Neo Ultra game entry.
- Right-click the ROM or game entry.
- Choose Open Save Data Location.
- In the folder that opens, locate the file named
main(or the save file identified by the project instructions). - Copy that file to a separate backup location before patching, updating or opening it in PKHeX.
The command avoids guessing among Citra’s title-ID folders. If the option opens an empty directory, check that you right-clicked the exact Neo Ultra entry and that the game has been launched at least once. If Citra shows several similar entries, verify the title and region before copying anything.
Fixing an incompatible-save warning
Stop before accepting an erase prompt
An incompatible-save message can indicate a different base-game region, a different Ultra Sun revision, a mismatched Neo Ultra build or a genuinely damaged file. It does not tell you which cause applies. Close the game, copy the existing save again and preserve every version you have before testing alternatives.

Compare the variables that can change compatibility
- Platform: a Citra save and a real-3DS save may require different export/import handling.
- Base title: Ultra Sun is not interchangeable with Ultra Moon.
- Region and revision: a save made for one regional/version combination may not load in another.
- Neo Ultra build: an update may alter files or expectations even when the base title is unchanged.
- File identity: importing the wrong file from a title-ID directory can look like corruption.
Test one variable at a time using a copied save. If the original unmodified Ultra Sun installation still loads the backup, the data is probably intact and the problem is compatibility with the Neo Ultra build. If no installation can read it, preserve the file and escalate rather than experimenting on the only copy.
Do not erase a save to make the warning disappear
The official Ultra Sun manual describes a title-screen procedure for unusable save data: press +, B and X together, then follow the displayed instructions to erase the save. That action is destructive. Use it only when the prompt is clearly from the official title, you have a verified backup, and you have decided that preserving the existing data is no longer possible. A similar-looking prompt in an emulator or modified build is not proof that erasure will repair Neo Ultra.
When a Neo Ultra feature is missing
Enable Mega Evolution in the documented Citra workflow
The creator documents an emulator-only method for enabling Mega Evolution through the main save. Work on a copy, not the original:
- Back up the Citra
mainsave using Open Save Data Location. - Open the copied save in PKHeX.
- Select SAV, then Trainer Info, then Misc.
- Enable Unlocked Mega Evolution.
- Save the edited file and place it where Citra expects the Neo Ultra save.
- Launch the game and confirm the feature before replacing your untouched backup.
This workflow is specifically documented for the emulator setup. Do not assume that the same menu or flag applies to a real 3DS, another emulator or a different Neo Ultra build. If the game rejects the edited file, restore the backup and report the build, platform and exact message.

Known Neo Ultra issues that are not necessarily save corruption
The release thread lists wild Mienshao appearing with no moves and a dark square texture patch around some Neo Forms. These are documented content or texture defects in the project. If your installation otherwise loads and the symptom matches one of those descriptions, reinstalling the game or deleting the save is unlikely to fix it. Record where it occurred, the Pokémon or form involved, your build and platform, and report it through the project’s Discord.

Platform-specific recovery limits
Citra and other emulators
Use the emulator’s own save-location command, preserve the main file, and test changes with copies. Emulator settings, title IDs and directory layouts can differ, so a path found in a generic 3DS guide may not be the path used by your installation. The documented Mega Evolution flag is an example of a project-specific emulator workflow, not a universal emulator repair.
A real 3DS
Use the README’s 3DS installation and backup method for the exact build. Do not copy a Citra file directly into a 3DS location unless the project documentation explicitly supports that conversion. If the console reports unusable data, stop before confirming deletion and preserve any export you can still access.
Nintendo Switch support instructions
Nintendo’s general corrupted-save guidance—update the console and software, restart, check for corrupt data, verify the correct user and download a Save Data Cloud backup when supported—applies to supported Switch software. Neo Ultra is an Ultra Sun hack associated with 3DS software, so those steps are not a guaranteed Citra or 3DS repair. Nintendo also warns that deleting a user deletes that user’s save data and it cannot be recovered; never delete a user as a troubleshooting shortcut.

If the README and a clean, separate installation do not resolve the problem, send the creator’s Discord a compact diagnostic report:
- Platform: real 3DS, Citra or another emulator.
- Neo Ultra build or release date.
- Base Ultra Sun region and version/revision.
- The exact error text, including capitalization.
- Whether the unmodified game still launches.
- Whether the original save and a separate backup still exist.
- The step that triggered the failure: download, extraction, patching, update, save import or feature edit.
- A screenshot or reproducible description for texture or battle issues.
Do not upload your only save or publish personal files. Share only the diagnostic information requested by the project’s support channel.
