Start with Nintendo’s supported sequence: update the Switch 2 system, update the Pokémon software, and restart the console. Then determine whether the problem is a crash, complete freeze, slow loading, frame-rate drop, or online disconnect; whether the game is physical or digital; and whether it is installed in system memory or on a microSD Express card. Those details determine the correct fix.
For Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, install version 4.0.0 or later. Nintendo released version 4.0.0 on June 2, 2025, with Switch 2 display and high-resolution-TV improvements and a smoother frame rate. For Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Nintendo lists version 2.0.2, released March 18, 2026, and says the update is required for Internet features.
Identify exactly what is going wrong
Before deleting software or formatting storage, reproduce the problem once and record its scope. A crash that closes the game, a frozen image that requires a power reset, a long loading screen, stuttering during movement, and an online communication error can have different causes.
| Symptom | Useful comparison | Likely troubleshooting branch |
|---|---|---|
| The game closes or returns to HOME | Does it happen in one title or every game? | Update, restart, corrupted-data check, redownload, and storage isolation |
| The picture is frozen | Does the console respond to the HOME button? | Restart; if unresponsive, force a shutdown, then check software and storage |
| Long loading or pauses | Is the title digital and installed on microSD Express? | Test system memory and inspect the card |
| Low or uneven frame rate | Does it occur offline, and in handheld, tabletop, and docked modes? | Update the game, compare modes, and separate local rendering from network problems |
| Online disconnect or communication error | Does offline play remain stable? | Troubleshoot Wi-Fi, router placement, interference, and the network equipment |
Also note whether the issue began after moving the game to a different storage device, after inserting a new game card, or only when the console is docked. Test another game if possible. If other titles fail in the same way, the console or its storage is more likely to be involved than one Pokémon installation.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
1. Update the console and Pokémon software
Install the latest Switch 2 system update
Open System Settings from the HOME Menu, choose System, then System Update. Install any available update and allow the console to restart. System software updates can contain compatibility and stability fixes that a game update expects.
Update the game from the HOME Menu
- Highlight the Pokémon title on the HOME Menu.
- Press the + or − button.
- Choose Software Update.
- Select Via the Internet and wait for the installation to finish.
Do this even if the game appears to launch normally. Nintendo’s lag guidance puts system and software updates before storage or data changes.
Scarlet and Violet: confirm the Switch 2 performance update
Nintendo’s update history identifies version 4.0.0, released June 2, 2025. Its listed changes are visual optimization for the Nintendo Switch 2 display and high-resolution televisions, plus an improved frame rate for smoother movement on Switch 2. If Scarlet or Violet is on an older version, update before judging performance.

Legends: Z-A: update before using Internet features
Nintendo lists version 2.0.2, released March 18, 2026, for Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Nintendo states that this update must be applied to use the game’s Internet features. If online functions are unavailable, verify the software version before changing router settings.

2. Restart the Switch 2 correctly
A normal restart clears temporary software state without deleting games or save data.
- Hold the POWER button for at least three seconds.
- Select Power Options.
- Select Restart.
If the console does not respond to the HOME button or the screen remains frozen, hold POWER for at least 12 seconds to force it off. Wait briefly, press POWER once to turn it on, and test the updated game again. Use the forced shutdown only when a normal restart is impossible.
3. If you use a physical Pokémon game card
Power the console down or return to the HOME Menu, remove the game card, and reinsert it firmly. Make sure the card is oriented correctly and fully seated. Then launch the title after completing the system and software updates.
This step matters because a physical card follows a different support path from downloaded software. If reseating the card changes the symptom, test the same card again after a complete restart. If the problem follows that one card while other games work, document the title, version, and circumstances before contacting Nintendo support.
Do not format a microSD Express card to address a problem with a physical game unless downloaded updates or additional data are also involved. A card-based game can still use console storage for updates, downloadable content, or other data, so note where those files are installed.

4. Check and rebuild digital software
Run the corrupted-data check
For a downloaded title, open System Settings from HOME, choose Data Management, select Manage Software, choose the Pokémon game, and use Check for Corrupt Data if that option is shown. Let the check complete before launching the game.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A corruption check can identify damaged files, but a result showing no corruption does not prove that the installation, storage card, or console is healthy. Continue with a controlled redownload if the symptom remains.
Delete and redownload the title
- Highlight the Pokémon game on HOME and press + or −.
- Choose Manage Software, then choose the delete option.
- Confirm the deletion and wait for it to finish.
- Redownload the game from the HOME Menu or Nintendo eShop using the account that owns it.
- Install the title to system memory for the first test if a microSD Express card is installed.
Deleting software is different from deleting save data. Follow the on-screen wording carefully and do not choose a save-data deletion option when you only intend to remove the program.
After the redownload, launch the game before restoring optional content or moving it back to a card. If it works from system memory, add one variable at a time so you can identify what changes the behavior.
5. Use the microSD Express card as a diagnostic variable
Nintendo specifically recommends investigating the microSD Express card when downloaded software freezes or lags. That recommendation does not prove that every slowdown is caused by a card; it gives you a controlled way to compare storage locations.

Test the game in system memory
Delete the problematic digital software, power the console off, remove the microSD Express card, restart the console, and redownload the additional data directly to system memory. Launch the game without reinserting the card. If the symptom disappears, repeat the test with the card installed but keep the game in system memory. This separates a card-related problem from a general console or software problem.
Format or replace the card only after preserving needed data
Nintendo’s storage guidance lists three options: format the microSD Express card, try another card, or remove the card and download directly to system memory. Formatting erases the card, so move or redownload any needed software and confirm that important data is stored separately before starting.
Use the console’s on-screen formatting command under System Settings and Data Management; do not format the card on a computer and assume it will be prepared correctly for Switch 2. After formatting, redownload one Pokémon title and test it before filling the card with other software.
Interpret the result
- Works only in system memory: the card, its contents, or the card’s interaction with the installation is implicated. Try a different compatible microSD Express card.
- Fails in both locations: storage location is unlikely to be the only cause. Recheck updates, corrupted data, and the game-specific symptoms.
- Several games fail from the same card: stop treating the issue as Pokémon-specific and document the card and console behavior for Nintendo support.
Do not label a card defective solely because a game once stuttered while using it. Make the system-memory comparison and, when possible, a second-card comparison before drawing that conclusion.
6. Distinguish frame-rate performance from an online problem
A network disconnect does not by itself show that local rendering is slow. Compare the same activity offline, if the game permits it, and test another network when practical. If offline movement is smooth but online play disconnects, follow the network branch rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.

Scarlet and Violet communication errors 2-ALZXA-0008 and 2-ALZYA-0008
Nintendo describes these errors as an interruption in communication with the server. Its listed causes include a slow or unstable wireless connection, interference, unresponsive networking equipment, or entering Sleep Mode or Airplane Mode during play.
- Restart the Switch 2 and try the connection again.
- Power-cycle the modem and router: turn them off, wait, then turn them back on and allow the connection to return.
- Move the console approximately 10–15 feet from the router during the test. Avoid placing it behind a television, inside a cabinet, or next to large metal objects.
- Move sources of wireless or electronic interference away from the console and router.
- If the router provides multiple wireless bands, try another available band.
- Do not enter Sleep Mode or Airplane Mode while an online session is active.
Run the test close to the router first, then restore your normal position. A stable result near the router followed by failures at the usual location points toward signal quality or interference rather than the Pokémon installation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Compare handheld, tabletop, and docked play
Record the mode in which the problem appears. A title that stutters only while docked may involve the display connection, television resolution, heat, or a mode-specific rendering load; a problem that occurs identically in every mode points more strongly to software, storage, or the console itself.
Recommended Free Tools
For Scarlet and Violet, confirm version 4.0.0 before making a performance judgment on a high-resolution television. Nintendo’s description specifically mentions optimization for the Switch 2 display and high-resolution TVs, so an outdated installation can make a comparison misleading.
Keep the console adequately ventilated and test without changing several variables at once. For example, do not update the game, move it to a new card, change the television’s picture mode, and switch Wi-Fi bands in one session; you will not know which action affected the result.
8. A practical decision flow
- Update: install the latest Switch 2 system update and the Pokémon software update.
- Restart: use Power Options > Restart; force shutdown with a 12-second POWER hold only if necessary.
- Classify: record crash, freeze, loading delay, frame-rate drop, or online disconnect.
- Check format: reseat a physical card, or run a corrupted-data check for a digital title.
- Redownload: delete and redownload digital software when the problem persists.
- Isolate storage: remove the microSD Express card and test a fresh installation in system memory.
- Test networking: use the Wi-Fi and router steps only when the symptom is online-specific.
- Escalate: contact Nintendo if the complete sequence does not resolve the fault.
| Situation after testing | Next action |
|---|---|
| One digital Pokémon title fails on microSD Express but works in system memory | Use system memory temporarily and test another compatible card |
| One physical game card fails while other games work | Reseat it, verify updates, and contact Nintendo with the reproduction details if it continues |
| Several digital games fail from the same card | Stop using that card for diagnosis, try another card or system memory, and seek support if needed |
| Only online sessions fail | Follow the router, distance, interference, and wireless-band checks |
| Every mode and multiple games fail after updates and storage tests | Escalate to Nintendo support; the issue is no longer clearly Pokémon-specific |
9. When to contact Nintendo
Contact Nintendo after documenting the title and version, whether it is physical or digital, storage location, console mode, exact error code, and the steps that changed or failed to change the symptom. Include whether the game works offline, whether other games are affected, and whether the issue remains after a redownload in system memory.
Nintendo’s support guidance directs users to contact Nintendo for additional support when the update, restart, physical-card, corrupted-data, redownload, storage, and network procedures do not resolve the problem. Avoid repeatedly formatting cards or deleting software without recording the result of each test; that can erase useful evidence and make the cause harder to identify.

What these fixes can and cannot establish
An update can correct known software problems, and Nintendo’s Scarlet and Violet version 4.0.0 notes specifically include Switch 2 visual and frame-rate improvements. A system-memory test can reveal whether a microSD Express installation is involved. Router troubleshooting can resolve communication interruptions. None of those tests, by itself, establishes a universal frame-rate guarantee or a console-wide crash rate. If performance is acceptable offline but an online session disconnects, treat those as separate issues and report both accurately.
