On Nintendo Switch, close any game that may be pausing a download, confirm the console is online, and refresh download progress. For crashes or freezes, update the system and game, check the game for corrupt data, and only then consider deleting and redownloading the software. The right steps depend on the game, platform, and exact error—mobile troubleshooting is app-specific.
First, identify the platform and the exact problem
Confirm whether the problem is on a Nintendo Switch or a phone or tablet. Then distinguish among a game that crashes or freezes, a download that will not start or stops progressing, and a message saying the game needs an update. If an error code appears, write down the full code and message before changing settings; it can point to the appropriate support instructions.
Nintendo provides an error-code lookup and separate support routes for different issues. Use the page for your region and the exact error where possible.
Fix a stalled Nintendo Switch download
A Switch game can pause another software download while it is being played. Nintendo recommends closing the running software and refreshing the download status before treating the download as broken.

- Save your progress, then close the running game from the HOME Menu.
- Confirm the console has an internet connection.
- Open your user page from the HOME Menu and select User Settings > Update Download Progress.
- If the download still does not progress, restart the console, reconnect it to the internet, and leave the download running without opening software that may pause it.
A slow connection can make a download take longer; restarting does not guarantee a faster download or resolve every connection problem. See Nintendo’s download troubleshooting guidance if it remains stuck.
Install a missing Switch game update
For Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet, Nintendo’s manual update path is to connect the console to the internet, highlight the game’s icon on the HOME Menu without launching it, press + or −, then choose Software Update > Via the Internet. Automatic updates depend on internet access and the console’s Software Auto-Updates setting.

Nintendo says the latest update is required for online features in these titles and that players need the same game version to play together. These conditions and update histories are title-specific: check the support page for the Pokémon game you are actually playing rather than assuming the same patch or requirement applies to every title. Troubleshoot Switch crashes and freezes
Work through Nintendo’s software checks in order. They address system and game updates and possible corrupt software data; they do not call for routinely erasing save data.

- Install any available Nintendo Switch system update.
- Check for and install an update for the affected game.
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings > Data Management > Manage Software, select the game, and choose Check for Corrupt Data.
- If the problem remains, follow Nintendo’s instructions to delete and redownload the affected software.
If the game has frozen, Nintendo’s corrupted-save guidance also recommends restarting the console after confirming it is up to date. Deleting and redownloading software is different from deleting save data; do not erase a save as a routine reinstall step. Nintendo explains its checks in general downloaded-software troubleshooting and its guidance for missing or unreadable save data.
Save recovery is a separate matter. Nintendo describes downloading a backed-up save only for supported games when the player has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and a cloud save backup. Do not assume every Pokémon title supports cloud saves.

Some crashes are caused by title-specific defects and may need a developer update. For example, Nintendo’s Scarlet and Violet update history records a fix for a main issue causing a crash on the screen used to pair with a Pokémon GO account. That historical fix does not establish the cause of other crashes or mean the issue remains current.

Low available space can prevent an update from installing. Check the console’s available system memory or microSD-card space before retrying, and consult the support page for the exact title and update. For scale, Nintendo’s UK Scarlet and Violet support page specifies approximately 5.2 GB of available space for version 3.0.1; that figure is for that update, not a general Pokémon update requirement.

A compatible microSD card can add storage if capacity is the obstacle. It will not repair a poor internet connection, a server outage, a game bug, or corrupted save data. Check compatibility with your Switch model before buying or using a card.
Troubleshoot Pokémon Café ReMix on a phone or tablet
Pokémon Support’s steps below are for Café ReMix, not a universal fix for every Pokémon mobile game:
- Check that the device meets the app’s recommended specifications.
- Make sure there is enough free storage for the app download and its save data.
- Close other running apps, then restart the device.
- Check that the internet connection is strong and stable.
Meeting the listed iOS or Android requirements does not guarantee compatibility with every device, and tablet functionality is not guaranteed. The Pokémon Café ReMix troubleshooting page was updated January 30, 2026. For a different mobile Pokémon title, use that app’s own support guidance.
When to contact support
If the problem persists after the steps for your symptom, use Nintendo’s error-code lookup and the relevant Nintendo support contact page. Include the console or device model, game title and version, exact error code and wording, whether you use a physical or downloaded copy, and the steps you have already tried. For Pokémon Café ReMix support codes, Pokémon Support says to contact support from within the app.
