If a price such as $19.99, €19.99, or £19.99 loses its currency symbol in a Playwright screenshot, first find out whether the symbol is missing from the page text, missing from the browser rendering, or only missing from the captured image. Each symptom points to a different fix; screenshot settings cannot supply a glyph that the page’s selected fonts do not contain.
Identify where the currency symbol disappears
Check the same price in three places: the application’s text, the browser before capture, and the screenshot. This separates a data or formatting problem from a font-rendering problem or a capture-state difference.
- Text: Does the price element’s
textContentorinnerTextcontain the expected currency character? - Browser: Does the page display that character correctly in the same browser engine and runtime environment used by the test?
- Screenshot: Does the captured image differ from what you saw in the browser immediately before capture?
If the character is absent at the first step, investigate application data, locale-aware price formatting, and the product template. If it exists in text but renders as a blank or replacement box, investigate font selection and glyph coverage. If it renders correctly but the screenshot differs, focus on loading, timing, and environment consistency.

If neither includes the symbol, trace the value from the product data through localization or formatting to the rendered template. A screenshot call cannot restore a character that the page never received.
Verify the browser’s font and glyph rendering
If the DOM includes the currency character but the browser shows a blank space or missing-glyph box, inspect the font actually used for the price, not just the intended CSS declaration. Check the computed font-family, the font files served by the page, and whether the selected font or its fallback has the required glyph.

Typeface coverage varies. A declared webfont may not contain every currency character, and a fallback font may differ between machines. Verify rendering in the same browser engine and runtime environment as the screenshot test. If the intended webfont has not loaded, fix the asset URL, serving, or network problem, or make the needed font available to the test environment.
Wait for relevant fonts and page work
When diagnosing a delayed or failed webfont load, inspect font requests and the browser’s document.fonts state. Wait for the page’s relevant loading work before capturing, then confirm that the intended font is available and the price renders correctly. A wait can address a timing issue; it cannot add a missing glyph to a font.

Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive page screenshots to be identical before comparing the final screenshot. That can help stabilize visual comparisons when the page is still changing, but it does not guarantee that the correct font loaded or that a font contains the currency symbol. Compare local and CI environments
If the symbol renders locally but not in continuous integration, compare the environments rather than assuming the screenshot API is at fault. Record the browser engine and version, operating system or container image, locale, and available font files. Also compare whether the DOM text contains the symbol, which font is loaded, and whether the browser already renders it incorrectly before capture.

Playwright notes that screenshot output can vary across browsers and platforms, including because of rendering and fonts. Keep visual baselines tied to a consistent project environment; a baseline created with one engine or font setup may not match another.
Use screenshot options only for capture-state problems
Playwright’s Page API provides screenshot options for matters such as timeout, scale, and stylesheet injection. Use them when you have identified a capture or appearance issue they can address—for example, stabilizing or deliberately adjusting page appearance. They are not documented as fixes for missing glyph coverage. See the Page screenshot API.

Do not block font requests as a general workaround: preventing a font from loading can change rendering and may make the missing-symbol problem worse. First establish whether the failure is caused by a request, the selected font, or a difference in runtime fonts.

In a March 2024 discussion of Playwright issue #29968, a maintainer described a Chromium case in which fonts were requested again around screenshot capture. The issue reporter later said their workaround involved using local font files, installing them in CI, and clearing the system font cache. That is one reported solution for a particular case, not a universal Playwright fix.
Try that approach only if your reproduction matches the reported symptoms. Test with the project’s actual font and a minimal page before changing CI font installation or cache handling.
