Most PlayStation download failures are caused by one of six things: the wrong account, an expired or unavailable entitlement, a service outage, insufficient storage, a network or system-software problem, or a damaged local content database. Check them in that order. Start with account and service checks, then restore licenses, verify storage and the connection, retry the download, and use Safe Mode only if the reversible steps fail.

The procedures below cover both PS5 and PS4. Menu names differ, and a purchase owned by another account or shared through console settings follows different rules from content you bought yourself.

Identify the failure before changing anything

The symptom usually tells you which branch to follow. A download that never starts or remains at one percentage is not automatically a license problem, while a padlock or missing add-on often is. Classifying it first prevents a destructive reset when a simple account check would have fixed the issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Download will not start, pauses, or stays stuck

Use this branch when a game, update, or add-on appears in your queue but does not progress. On PS5, open the Control Center, select Downloads/Uploads, and inspect the item. On PS4, open Notifications and then Downloads. A stalled item can result from an outage, a full drive, a failed network connection, outdated system software, or a local database problem.

A purchase, game, or add-on is missing

Use this branch when the item is absent from the library or a purchase seems to have vanished. Confirm that you are signed in to the account that paid for it, check transaction history, look for hidden games, verify the relevant sharing or primary-console setting, and then restore licenses.

A padlock or license error appears

A padlock means the console cannot currently validate the entitlement for that user. Sign in with the purchasing account, verify the transaction, and check whether a PlayStation Plus title still has an active subscription and remains included in the service. If another user owns the content, that user must have sharing or primary-console activation configured correctly. Restore licenses after those checks.

Run the reversible checks first

Before deleting anything, work through this short sequence. It separates an entitlement issue from a service, storage, network, software, or database issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the account. Confirm the signed-in email address is the one shown on the receipt or in transaction history. Different accounts can exist on the same console, and a purchase is attached to the account that made it.
  2. Check the entitlement. For a purchase, verify the transaction. For a PlayStation Plus game, confirm the subscription is active and that the title is still available through the plan. A title removed from the catalog is not restored by troubleshooting.
  3. Check sharing status. On PS5, review Console Sharing and Offline Play. On PS4, check whether the purchasing account has activated that console as its primary PS4. Sharing settings determine whether other local users can use the owner’s digital content.
  4. Check PlayStation service status. A store, account, or download outage can prevent license confirmation or delivery. If the service is degraded, wait for recovery instead of repeatedly deleting and restarting the same download.
  5. Check free space and the connection. Compare the game’s required free space with the console’s available storage, then run the built-in internet connection test. A download can need more working space than the final installed size.
  6. Check system software. Install any pending console update, restart the console, and try the download again.

This order preserves your data and makes the later error message more useful. If the item is clearly a licensing problem, go directly to the restore-license procedure below; if it is a queue problem, use the pause, resume, and retry steps.

Resolve account, ownership, and sharing problems

Confirm the purchasing account and transaction

Open the account’s transaction history and locate the game, add-on, or upgrade. Check the product name, edition, and status. Deluxe, cross-generation, trial, and bundle products can place different items in the library, so verify that you are looking for the exact edition purchased. If the transaction is absent, you are probably using a different account or the order did not complete; restoring licenses cannot create a missing purchase.

Sign out and back in only after recording the correct account details. Do not remove the user profile as a first step, because doing so can complicate local saves and settings without fixing an entitlement attached to another account.

Check PlayStation Plus eligibility

Monthly and catalog titles are available only while the relevant subscription and entitlement conditions are met. Confirm the subscription is active on the account that claimed the game and that the game has not left the catalog or monthly-claim eligibility. A previously installed title may show a lock when the account no longer has access, even though its files remain on the drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play

On the purchasing account, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. The setting allows other users on that PS5 to use the owner’s purchased content and lets the content work offline. If the account has sharing enabled on a different PS5, the current console may not grant other users access. Change the setting only when you understand which console should be authorized.

Check the PS4 primary-console activation

On PS4, sign in with the purchasing account and open Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PS4. A primary PS4 can share the account’s purchased games and selected benefits with other local users. If the account’s primary console is elsewhere, another user on this PS4 may see a padlock even though the owner can launch the game while signed in.

Unhide a game that is not visible

A hidden purchase does not appear in the normal library view. Review the account’s hidden-content or library filters and unhide the item, then search the library again. If the transaction exists but the item remains absent, restore licenses before deleting any local data.

Restore licenses safely

PlayStation states that restoring licenses will not affect your data. It refreshes the console’s entitlement records and can help when a game has a padlock icon, when you cannot locate a game or add-on, or when a game crashes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PS5 menu path

PS4 menu path

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Account Management.
  3. Select Restore Licenses.
  4. Choose Restore.

After the process completes, return to the library and try the item again. If the account, transaction, subscription, and sharing settings are correct but the padlock remains, check service status and the exact error code before repeating the operation.

Repair a stalled or failed download

PS5: pause, resume, or restart the queue item

  1. Press the PS button to open the Control Center.
  2. Select Downloads/Uploads.
  3. Highlight the affected item and choose Pause, wait several seconds, then choose Resume.
  4. If it still does not move, choose Cancel and Delete.
  5. Open Game Library, find the game or add-on, and start the download again.

Canceling and deleting the queue entry removes the incomplete download package, not your account purchase. Do not use this step until you have confirmed the correct account and enough free space.

PS4: use Notifications

  1. Open Notifications from the function area.
  2. Select Downloads and highlight the stalled item.
  3. Choose Pause, then Resume.
  4. If that fails, choose Cancel and Delete.
  5. Open the Library, select the title, and start the download again.

If the retry fails immediately, note the displayed code and return to the account, service, storage, and connection checks rather than repeating the same queue action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restart and update before another attempt

Power the console off normally, wait for it to shut down completely, and start it again. Install the latest available system-software update through the console’s system settings, then retry from the library. A restart clears a temporary queue or network state; it does not repair an incorrect entitlement.

Free storage and test the network

Verify the actual storage margin

Open the console’s Storage settings and compare available space with the requirement shown for the game or update. Large patches can require substantial temporary working space while files are unpacked. Delete or move unneeded games, captures, or applications only after confirming that important saves are synchronized or backed up.

A compatible external USB storage drive can address a capacity limit, but it cannot repair a license, an account mismatch, or a PlayStation service outage. Verify the drive’s PS5 or PS4 compatibility, capacity, and required formatting before buying or moving content. Follow the console’s formatting prompt; formatting erases the drive.

Test and stabilize the connection

Run the internet connection test from the console’s Network settings and check whether the console receives an IP address, reaches the internet, and signs in to PlayStation services. If possible, retry over Ethernet instead of Wi‑Fi. For Wi‑Fi, move the console closer to the access point, stop heavy traffic on other devices, and avoid repeatedly starting and canceling the same download while the connection is unstable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A successful connection test does not prove that the store or download servers are healthy. If the service-status page reports an incident, wait for the incident to clear before deeper local repair.

Use Safe Mode only after basic checks

Safe Mode provides recovery tools that are more invasive than pausing a queue item or restoring a license. Use it when the console has been restarted, updated, given adequate storage and a stable connection, and the download still fails or the library behaves inconsistently.

Enter Safe Mode

  1. Turn the console completely off, not into Rest Mode.
  2. Press and hold the power button. Release it after the second beep, approximately seven seconds after the first beep.
  3. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.

The Safe Mode menu lists different options by console generation. Follow the on-screen warning for each option and do not disconnect power while a repair is running.

PS5 cache and database options

On PS5, choose Clear System Software Cache first when a temporary system-data problem is suspected. If the library or queue remains inconsistent, choose Rebuild Database. PlayStation describes this as scanning the drive and creating a new database of content. It reorganizes the index; it is not the same as deleting installed games or resetting the console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PS4 database rebuild

On PS4, choose Rebuild Database. The console scans its storage and creates a new content database. The process can take much longer on a drive containing many files, so keep the console powered and allow it to finish.

Avoid reset and reinstallation as a first response

Later Safe Mode choices can reset the console or reinstall system software. Those options can delete user data on PS5 and should be treated as final recovery steps, not routine download fixes. Before considering them, back up saves and captures, confirm that the account can redownload purchased content, and follow official support instructions for the specific error.

Use the error code to choose the next step

Write down the complete code, including every letter, number, and hyphen. PlayStation’s official error-code pages provide code-specific actions; a similar-looking code can represent a different failure class.

Code What it indicates Practical response
CE-107928-7 A PS5 download was stopped. Check the queue, storage, connection, system software, and service status; cancel and restart the item if the basic checks pass.
NP-104291-7 License information could not be confirmed. Sign in to the purchasing account, verify the transaction or subscription, check sharing, restore licenses, and retry when services are available.
CE-112987-8 A purchase, download, or installation problem. Record the exact stage that failed, then follow the account, storage, network, and software sequence before escalating.
CE-109258-5 The server connection may have failed before license information was confirmed. Restart the console and restore licenses. The condition may be temporary, so retry after service recovery.
WS-46332-8 A PS4 network or license-related failure. Restart, restore licenses, power the console off and on again, and contact support if the code persists.

Do not substitute a code from a different console generation or a different account. Include the code in any support request so the agent can match the correct troubleshooting path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to contact PlayStation Support or Repairs

Escalate when the entitlement is valid, service status is normal, storage and networking are adequate, the system is updated, the queue has been restarted, and the appropriate Safe Mode repair has not solved the problem. Also escalate when multiple unrelated games fail, the console repeatedly loses licenses, or it shuts down or reports storage errors.

Prepare a concise record before contacting support:

  • The exact error code and wording.
  • The game, edition, add-on, and account that owns it.
  • The date and approximate time of each attempt.
  • The steps already completed and their results.
  • A screenshot or short video showing the failure, if possible.

Use the official PlayStation Support channel for software and account cases. PlayStation’s PS5 and PS4 hardware-support pages direct persistent console problems to the PlayStation Repairs diagnostic tool. Follow the diagnostic result rather than repeatedly resetting the console.

Prevent the same failure from returning

  • Keep enough free internal storage for the game and its updates, not just the advertised installed size.
  • Install system-software updates before beginning a large download.
  • Use a stable wired connection when Wi‑Fi is unreliable.
  • Keep the purchasing account’s sign-in and transaction records available, especially on a console used by several people.
  • Review PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play or PS4 primary-console activation after changing consoles.
  • Back up important saves before any Safe Mode option that can reset or reinstall software.

The safe progression is consistent: establish who owns the content, confirm that PlayStation can serve it, verify space and connectivity, refresh the license, restart the queue, repair the local database, and only then consider data-risking recovery or hardware service.
