If Personal Hotspot is not working after an iOS 17 update, first check that your iPhone has cellular data and that your carrier plan includes hotspot use. Then restart both devices and work through the connection-specific checks below. Apple’s current troubleshooting guidance does not establish a specific iOS 17 bug, so an issue noticed after updating should not automatically be attributed to the update.
What Personal Hotspot needs to work
Personal Hotspot shares the iPhone’s cellular data connection with another device; it does not create a separate internet connection. Your carrier must support the feature on your plan, and cellular data must be available. Apple notes that hotspot use may involve additional fees. Start with the checks that fix common failures
- Check cellular data. On the iPhone, open Settings and confirm Cellular Data is on. If the iPhone itself cannot access cellular data, resolve that service problem with your carrier first.
- Check Personal Hotspot. Open Settings > Personal Hotspot and turn on Allow Others to Join. If Personal Hotspot is missing, dimmed, or cannot be enabled, ask your carrier whether the feature is enabled for your account and included in your plan.
- Restart both devices. Restart the iPhone providing the hotspot and the device that is trying to connect.
- Check for updates. Install the latest available iOS or iPadOS updates on both devices, then retry the connection.
Apple recommends retrying after each troubleshooting step. If the hotspot toggle is unavailable or remains disabled, go to Apple Support’s troubleshooting steps and contact your carrier to verify account provisioning, plan eligibility, possible tethering fees, and any connection limit that applies to your plan and iPhone.
If your hotspot does not show up or a device cannot join over Wi-Fi
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Personal Hotspot and confirm Allow Others to Join is on.
- Check the hotspot network name and current Wi-Fi password displayed in Personal Hotspot settings. If the connecting device has an old saved password, enter the current one or forget the network and join again.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and back on on the connecting device, then look for the iPhone’s hotspot again.
- Keep the iPhone’s Personal Hotspot settings screen open while the other device connects.
- If the devices still will not connect, try Maximise Compatibility if the setting is available on your model.
Apple lists iPhone 12 or later and specified iPad Pro and iPad mini models among devices eligible for Maximise Compatibility. Apple cautions that turning it on might reduce internet performance and Wi-Fi security. The number of devices that can join is not a universal fixed limit; it depends on the carrier and iPhone model. If a device connects but has no internet
A connected device uses the iPhone’s cellular data. Check whether cellular data works on the iPhone itself. If it does not, the hotspot cannot provide internet until cellular service is restored. If cellular data works but the connected device still has no internet, confirm the carrier plan supports Personal Hotspot and that the feature is enabled for your account. Apple identifies a supporting carrier and plan as requirements.
If Wi-Fi tethering keeps failing, try USB or Bluetooth
Wi-Fi is not the only way to connect. Apple documents USB and Bluetooth as alternatives; the available setup depends on the devices involved.

Connect by USB
- Turn on Allow Others to Join in Settings > Personal Hotspot.
- Connect the iPhone to the computer with a USB cable that fits both devices and supports data.
- Approve any trust or accessory prompts on the iPhone or computer.
- On Windows, use the latest Apple Devices app or iTunes.
A charging-only cable may not support tethering. If the iPhone’s USB network service does not appear on a Mac, Apple’s troubleshooting guidance describes adding or toggling that network service. A wired connection is worth trying if you already have a compatible cable or need USB tethering; buying a cable is not necessary for Wi-Fi troubleshooting.
Connect by Bluetooth
Apple also lists Bluetooth as a Personal Hotspot connection method. Follow the Bluetooth pairing and connection steps for your iPhone and the device you want to connect, using Apple’s connection instructions for device-specific guidance.

Reset Network Settings only after simpler checks
If the hotspot still fails after the checks above, you can try Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This is a later step because it removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords and resets cellular, VPN, and APN settings previously used. Be prepared to reconnect to Wi-Fi and restore any network settings you need. Apple lists this reset in its Personal Hotspot troubleshooting guidance.

Contact the carrier that provides cellular service for the iPhone if Personal Hotspot is missing, dimmed, cannot be enabled, or will not provide internet despite working cellular data. Ask the carrier to verify that Personal Hotspot is provisioned on your account, your plan supports tethering, any applicable fee, and whether a carrier or iPhone-model connection limit applies. Apple’s published troubleshooting instructions are general guidance, not evidence of a particular iOS 17-specific fault.
