Most Path of Exile 2 crashes, hitching, and low-FPS complaints can be narrowed down by updating the game and graphics driver, letting the shader cache rebuild, reading the in-game F1 frame-time graphs, and testing Vulkan and DirectX 12 separately. Do those checks before buying hardware or changing many settings at once. A first visit to areas after an update may still hitch while shaders compile; judge performance after that work has finished.
Identify exactly what is failing
The remedy depends on whether the game is crashing, compiling shaders, running into a CPU or GPU limit, or losing its network connection. Write down the game patch, renderer, graphics-driver version, Windows version, resolution, upscaler, frame cap, and the location, skill, or effect that triggers the problem. Change one variable at a time so you can tell which intervention mattered.
Crash to desktop
A crash that returns you to Windows without an error is different from a frozen picture, a driver reset, or a disconnection. Note whether it happens at launch, while loading an area, after a long session, or when a particular effect appears. The timing is useful when you later compare renderers or prepare a support report.

A “Device Removed” message generally indicates that the graphics device or driver stopped responding. It is not the same symptom as an ordinary server disconnect. Record the renderer and driver at the moment it occurs; both are essential for identifying a renderer-specific problem.

Temporary freeze or shader-compilation hitch
A short pause when entering a new zone, seeing an effect for the first time, or fighting a dense pack can be shader compilation rather than a permanently slow system. Repeated spikes after every update or renderer change suggest a damaged or incomplete cache, while a one-time hitch that fades as you revisit content is expected cache work.
Consistently low frame rate
If the frame rate remains low in familiar areas, use the F1 graphs to determine whether the CPU or GPU is taking most of each frame. That diagnosis is more reliable than assuming that a high-end-sounding processor or graphics card is automatically fast enough at your chosen resolution.
Network disconnect
A character freezing while the connection drops, followed by a return to the login screen, is a network symptom. Renderer changes and shader-cache deletion will not repair an internet route or server session, so keep that category separate from rendering faults.
Update the game and graphics driver first
Grinding Gear Games said in its July 29, 2026 official video description that, after extensive investigation and optimisation, it had implemented fixes for long-standing shader-loading issues and “Device Removed” crashes. The same announcement advises updating to NVIDIA Game Ready Driver 610.88 and allowing Path of Exile 2 time to rebuild its shader cache.
NVIDIA’s 610.88 release notes list a specific Path of Exile 2 fix: “Fixed intermittent long pauses that could occur after extended gameplay sessions in DX12 mode [5090018].” This is a dated driver fix, not a guarantee that every crash or pause is eliminated. Driver version and the date of the game patch both matter when you compare your symptoms with that change.
- Install the current game patch available to your client.
- Install the graphics driver appropriate for your GPU. If you are testing a later driver than 610.88, record its exact version rather than assuming it contains the same fix.
- Start the game and allow the cache rebuild to proceed. The first trips through areas or mechanics can take longer while shaders compile.
- Only evaluate smoothness after you have revisited the problem area and the initial compilation work has settled.
Do not combine the update with a renderer switch, cache deletion, overclock change, and several quality changes in the same test. Doing so removes the evidence needed to identify the cause.
Use the F1 performance graph to find the bottleneck
Press F1 in game and enable all graph details. Reproduce the problem in the same area with the same resolution, upscaling mode, and frame cap. The graphs let you distinguish a short shader event from a sustained limit.

Shader spikes
When the shader graph jumps as you enter an area or encounter an effect for the first time, the pause is consistent with compilation or cache population. Let the game process that content, then check whether later passes are smoother. Repeated spikes after the cache should be warm are a reason to rebuild it.
Sustained CPU frame time
A CPU line that stays high while the GPU has headroom means the processor or game workload is limiting frame delivery. Lowering a setting that primarily affects the GPU will not remove that limit. Reduce scene complexity where possible, keep a sensible frame cap, and compare the same encounter after each change.
Sustained GPU frame time
A GPU line that remains high indicates that resolution, upscaling, effects, shadows, or another graphics workload is consuming the frame budget. Lower the largest GPU-cost settings in a controlled order and check the graph after each adjustment.
Why the graph is a diagnostic, not a cure
The F1 method comes from a community-authored forum guide. It is a practical way to classify symptoms, but it cannot guarantee a fix for every driver, patch, or hardware combination. Use the graph to choose the next test rather than treating one spike as proof of a single cause.

Test Vulkan and DirectX 12 independently
Vulkan and DirectX 12 can behave differently on the same PC. Compare them on the same scene, with the same resolution, upscaler, quality settings, and frame cap. Keep the renderer that gives your system the most stable frame pacing and reliable launches; there is no universal winner established by the available evidence.
| Test | What to record | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Vulkan | Whether the game reaches the menu, F1 frame-time behavior, area-load hitches, and crashes after a comparable session | A launch failure or device reset on Vulkan points toward a Vulkan/GPU-driver interaction on that machine; it does not prove Vulkan is bad for every PC. |
| DirectX 12 | The same scene and settings, plus whether long-session pauses appear | Use the exact driver version when comparing results. NVIDIA’s 610.88 notes specifically address intermittent long pauses after extended DX12 sessions. |
| Stable choice | Frame pacing, launch success, and repeatability rather than a single peak-FPS reading | Select the renderer that remains stable in the content you actually play. |
If Vulkan prevents the game from launching
Grinding Gear Games’ announcement gives a configuration-file workaround when the menu cannot be reached:
- Close Path of Exile 2 and the game launcher.
- Open
Documents\My Games\Path of Exile 2\production_Config.ini. - Find
renderer_type=Vulkan. - Change it to
renderer_type=DirectX12, save the file, and launch the game. - Once the menu is available, test both renderers under matched settings rather than assuming the edit is a permanent recommendation.
A community launch-crash discussion describes the same edit. It is useful for recovering access to the menu, but renderer stability remains specific to the GPU, driver, patch, and scene.

Rebuild a suspect shader cache safely
Delete a cache only when the F1 graph shows repeated shader spikes after an update or renderer change, or when cache files appear to be causing recurring compilation. Closing the game first prevents files from being in use.
- Exit Path of Exile 2 completely.
- Open the Windows Run dialog or File Explorer and go to
%APPDATA%\Path of Exile 2\. - Remove the folder named
ShaderCacheVulkanif you are rebuilding the Vulkan cache. - Remove folders whose names begin with
ShaderCacheD3Dwhen rebuilding the DirectX cache. - Restart the game with the renderer you want to test.
- Revisit the areas and mechanics that previously triggered the problem. Expect temporary hitches while the cache repopulates, and do not judge the result during the first compilation pass.
These are cache locations identified by a community troubleshooting guide. Do not delete unrelated game files, configuration files, characters, or the entire game installation as a substitute for removing the named cache folders.
Reduce rendering load in a controlled order
After the cache has been rebuilt and the F1 graph identifies a sustained GPU limit, lower settings with the largest observed GPU cost first. Keep the resolution, upscaler, renderer, and frame cap fixed while testing one setting at a time. A reasonable frame cap can reduce oscillation between a full and underused GPU, but the useful value depends on your display and measured frame time.
- Start with the quality options that visibly affect dense effects, shadows, and other GPU-heavy work in the scene where the graph is high.
- Change one option, reproduce the same encounter, and record the frame-time result.
- Keep changes that improve sustained frame time; revert changes that do not.
- If the CPU line is the sustained limit, do not expect a GPU-quality reduction to solve it. Concentrate on workload and frame-cap tests instead.
- Disable overlays and monitoring tools one at a time if a hang coincides with their use. Re-enable each tool after the test unless it is demonstrably involved.
There is no evidence-backed universal “best” preset for every Path of Exile 2 system. Renderer behavior, driver version, patch, resolution, and the particular skill effect or encounter all change the result.
Use a repeatable test instead of guessing
For useful comparisons, create a short test route: launch into the same town or hideout, enter the same map or zone, trigger the same skill effect, and play for a similar number of minutes. Record average behavior and the worst hitch rather than one peak-FPS number. A renderer that starts quickly but develops pauses after an extended session should not be judged only from the first minute.
Keep a simple log with the date, game patch, driver, renderer, resolution, upscaler, frame cap, and one change per run. Note whether the first run was still compiling shaders. If you switch from Vulkan to DirectX 12, treat that as a new cache-building event and repeat the route after the cache is warm. This prevents a temporary first-run hitch from being mistaken for a lasting regression.
Overlays, capture software, and hardware-monitoring tools can interact with a graphics driver. If disabling one appears to help, repeat the test with it enabled and disabled before drawing a conclusion. Do not uninstall several programs or change Windows settings simultaneously; that makes the result impossible to reproduce.

Check the published minimum requirements before buying parts
Steam’s 2024 listing gives the following minimum baseline:
| Component | Published minimum | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Intel Core i7-7700 or AMD Ryzen 5 2500X | A baseline for running the game, not a promise of a fixed frame rate in every encounter. |
| GPU | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 (3 GB), Intel Arc A380, or AMD Radeon RX 470 | Compare your actual GPU and available VRAM with this class before treating an upgrade as the first fix. |
| Graphics API | DirectX 12 | The listing identifies the required API; it does not establish that DirectX 12 will be the most stable renderer on every machine. |
Meeting the minimum is not the same as maintaining a target FPS at a chosen resolution, quality level, or crowded end-game encounter. An upgrade is worth considering when your GPU is below that published baseline, or when software is current, both renderers have been tested, the cache is clean, and the F1 graph still shows a sustained GPU limit.
Checks before selecting an upgrade
- Confirm the resolution and refresh rate you want to run.
- Check the power supply’s capacity and connectors.
- Measure case clearance and confirm adequate airflow.
- Compare the replacement GPU with your current CPU so a new graphics card does not simply expose a CPU frame-time limit.
- Use current, region-specific pricing and availability; the minimum-requirements listing does not identify a particular upgrade model or price.
When software fixes have not solved the crash
If a current game patch, current driver, clean shader cache, and separate Vulkan and DirectX 12 tests all fail, stop changing random settings and prepare a reproducible support report. Include:
- Exact game patch and Windows version.
- GPU model, CPU model, system memory, and graphics-driver version.
- Renderer in use: Vulkan or DirectX 12.
- Resolution, upscaler, frame cap, and the quality settings that were active.
- Whether the failure is a desktop crash, Device Removed error, temporary freeze, shader spike, low FPS, or network disconnect.
- The location, skill, effect, or elapsed session time that triggers it.
- F1 graph details showing shader, CPU, or GPU frame-time behavior.
- Which cache folder was removed and whether the first post-rebuild run was still compiling shaders.
This information lets support distinguish a renderer-specific launch failure from a sustained hardware limit or a one-time cache rebuild. It also prevents a known driver fix from being misapplied to a different symptom.

- Lower GPU-heavy settings or test overlays one at a time, keeping a record of every change.
- Compare your system with Steam’s minimum baseline. Consider hardware only when the measured bottleneck and your target resolution justify it.
- Send the complete reproduction details to support if both renderers and a clean cache still fail.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Path of Exile 2 keep crashing after I update it?
An update can trigger a new shader-cache build, and the first trips through areas may hitch. Update the graphics driver too, note whether the crash is a desktop exit or a Device Removed error, and test again after the cache has finished compiling. If it persists, compare Vulkan and DirectX 12 with the same settings and record the exact patch and driver.
How do I fix PoE 2 stuttering?
Press F1 and enable the detailed graphs. Spikes in the shader graph during first-time effects usually indicate compilation; repeated spikes after the cache is warm justify rebuilding the relevant cache. A sustained CPU or GPU frame-time line requires workload or graphics-setting changes instead, tested one at a time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs Vulkan or DirectX 12 better for Path of Exile 2?
Neither is universally best. Test both on the same scene, resolution, upscaler, quality settings, and frame cap, then choose the one with reliable launches and steadier frame pacing. NVIDIA driver 610.88 specifically lists a fix for intermittent long pauses after extended DX12 sessions, so include the driver version in your comparison.

What should I do if Vulkan crashes before the menu?
Close the game, open Documents\My Games\Path of Exile 2\production_Config.ini, change renderer_type=Vulkan to renderer_type=DirectX12, save, and launch. Once you can reach the menu, test both renderers rather than assuming DirectX 12 will be best on every system.
How do I rebuild the PoE 2 shader cache?
Exit the game, open %APPDATA%\Path of Exile 2\, remove ShaderCacheVulkan for Vulkan or folders beginning ShaderCacheD3D for DirectX, then restart. Expect temporary hitches while shaders compile again. Do not remove unrelated game or configuration files.
Why is Path of Exile 2 low FPS on a good PC?
A high-end component name does not identify the active bottleneck. Use F1 in the exact encounter where FPS drops. A sustained CPU line means the game workload or processor is limiting frames; a sustained GPU line points to resolution, upscaling, effects, shadows, or another graphics load. Adjust only the settings that match the observed limit.

First compare your system with Steam’s published minimum: Core i7-7700 or Ryzen 5 2500X, GTX 960 3GB, Arc A380, or RX 470, with DirectX 12. Consider a graphics-card upgrade when your GPU is below that baseline or remains the sustained F1 bottleneck after current software, a clean cache, and both renderer tests. Check resolution, power supply, connectors, case clearance, airflow, and CPU balance before choosing a model.
What information should I send to support?
Provide the game patch, Windows version, CPU, GPU, system memory, driver version, renderer, resolution, upscaler, frame cap, quality settings, trigger location or effect, elapsed session time, and whether the symptom is a crash, Device Removed error, freeze, shader spike, low FPS, or disconnect. Include F1 graph observations and the cache folder you removed.
The Bottom Line
Start with the game and driver update, then let shaders compile. Use F1 to separate shader spikes from sustained CPU or GPU limits, test Vulkan and DirectX 12 under matched conditions, and rebuild only the relevant cache when repeated spikes remain. Compare your hardware with Steam’s minimum before spending money. If both renderers, a current driver, and a clean cache still fail, send support a precise reproduction report instead of changing settings at random.
