“Discovered – currently not indexed” means Google knows a URL exists but has not crawled it yet. It does not mean Google reviewed the page and rejected it. First check whether Googlebot can reach the page and whether it is worth crawling; then improve discovery signals such as your sitemap and internal links. A crawl request can prompt Google to revisit a URL, but it cannot guarantee crawling or indexing.
What “Discovered – currently not indexed” means
In Google Search Console’s Page indexing report, this status means Google is aware of the URL but has not fetched it. That distinguishes it from a page that Google crawled and then chose not to include in its index. Google treats crawling and indexing as separate steps: after fetching a page, it evaluates and consolidates the page and decides whether it is suitable for the index. A sitemap entry, technical change, or indexing request is not a promise of inclusion. See Google’s crawl budget guidance.
There is no standard recovery time or published rate showing how many URLs with this status will eventually be indexed. Focus on the causes you can verify rather than assuming that waiting a fixed number of days—or repeatedly requesting indexing—will resolve it.
How to diagnose and fix the status
-
Check representative URLs in Search Console
Group affected URLs by page template, directory, publication date, and URL pattern. Inspect a few examples with URL Inspection to investigate how Google sees each URL and whether Googlebot can access it. Check whether the problem affects one page, one template, or a broad set of URLs. Google Search Central describes using URL Inspection when investigating a page that returned a 403 response to Googlebot in its July 2023 office-hours transcript. An indexing request is not a fix for an access problem.

Verify the server can reliably serve the page
Check that the intended page loads consistently for visitors and that Googlebot is not encountering server errors or rate limits. Google says slow responses, 5xx errors, and 429 responses can reduce crawl capacity. Investigate outages, response-time changes, and rate limiting before encouraging more crawling; asking Google to crawl a struggling server can add pressure without fixing the underlying issue. Google’s crawl budget guidance explains the relationship between server health and crawl capacity.
-
Review which URLs your site exposes
Look for duplicate, parameterized, sorted, removed, or otherwise unimportant URLs that could consume crawling attention. Consolidate duplicate pages where appropriate, and avoid creating unnecessary URL variations. Use
robots.txtto prevent crawling only when a URL should not be crawled; Google warns that blocked URLs may remain in the crawl queue longer, so blocking is not a temporary way to redirect crawl budget.Rank #2

If a page has been permanently removed, return a 404 or 410 status rather than leaving a misleading page in place. Google describes a 404 as a strong signal not to crawl a removed URL again. The same July 2023 Search Central transcript also discusses duplicate URLs and Google selecting an alternate version.

Make important pages easy to discover
Keep your XML sitemap current and include the URLs you want Google to crawl. When content changes, Google recommends providing a useful
<lastmod>value. Add relevant internal links from pages that already make sense in your site structure. These steps help Google discover and understand important URLs; there is no universal number of internal links that guarantees a crawl.Special offer. Check canonical signals and duplicate versions
Confirm that the page’s declared
rel="canonical"points to the version you want surfaced and is consistent with your other signals. Google considers the canonical recommendation alongside signals such as how well a URL is linked. If substantially the same content exists at multiple URLs, Google may select a different version for indexing. A canonical tag is a signal, not a guarantee; review the duplicate URLs and their links as well as the tag. Google discusses canonical selection in the July 2023 office-hours transcript. -
Assess whether the page adds distinct value
Once a page can be crawled and is easy to find, consider whether it offers useful, unique, relevant information rather than repeating another URL. Google lists page quality, uniqueness, and relevance among factors affecting crawl demand. Removing or combining pages is not automatically a solution: in a discussion about reducing a used-products catalog from eight million pages to two million, Google Search Relations representative John Mueller said, “In most cases though, it’s more about overall website quality.” The point is that reducing URL count alone may not help if the change does not improve the site overall. See the July 2023 transcript.

Is this a crawl-budget problem?
Usually, not for a smaller or stable site. Google says that a current sitemap and regular checks of indexing reports are generally adequate for smaller sites or sites whose pages are normally crawled soon after publication. Its advanced crawl-budget guidance is mainly aimed at very large or rapidly changing sites, and specifically notes sites with a large share of URLs in this status.
| Site situation | First focus | Crawl-budget guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Smaller or stable site | Current sitemap, individual URL access, and the Page indexing report | Usually not an advanced crawl-budget problem |
| Very large or rapidly changing site | URL inventory, crawl demand and capacity, server health, and crawl efficiency | More relevant, especially if a large share of URLs has this status |
Google gives rough examples of the scale its advanced guidance addresses: sites with at least one million unique pages that change about once a week, or at least 10,000 unique pages that change daily. These are examples, not eligibility rules or promises of faster indexing. For a small site, start with accurate sitemaps, accessible pages, useful internal links, and the Page indexing report rather than advanced crawl-budget tactics. See Google’s crawl budget guidance.

What not to expect from an indexing request
Requesting indexing may be useful after you have fixed a problem or published an important page, but it does not force Google to crawl the URL or add it to Search. Google first has to fetch the page, then decide whether it belongs in the index. The exact current Search Console interface sequence, request limits, and processing time are not established by the cited Google material, so do not rely on a specific number of requests or a promised turnaround.
