To fix packet burst, lag, or high ping in Call of Duty, first check the game’s online-service status, then test with downloads and streams paused, restart your modem and router, and compare Wi‑Fi with a direct Ethernet connection. Keep the game mode, server region, device, and test time consistent so each change produces useful evidence.

Packet burst is an in-game warning that packets are arriving unevenly or late. It does not identify one specific fault. The cause can be a service incident, wireless interference, router congestion, household traffic, ISP congestion or routing, geographic distance to the server, or the game device itself.

What packet burst, lag, ping, and packet loss mean

Ping is round-trip delay

Ping is the time, in milliseconds, for data to travel from your device to the game server and for a response to return. A higher value means your inputs and the server’s responses take longer to complete. Activision Publishing’s 2024 latency research says first-person action games such as Call of Duty are particularly sensitive to latency. In that research, 200 milliseconds is described as a poor Call of Duty experience; it is not a universal cutoff that guarantees a problem for every player, mode, region, or connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

High latency can make a player appear to warp or teleport, and an apparently accurate shot can miss because the server received the action later than expected. A low number on one test is not proof that every match will be smooth: the game may use a different server, your route may change, and household traffic can vary minute by minute.

Packet loss means data did not arrive

Packet loss occurs when data fails to reach its destination. Lost packets can produce delayed movement, missing hit registration, rubber-banding, voice-chat problems, or a disconnect. A short loss event can feel like a severe lag spike even when the average ping shown elsewhere looks normal.

Packet burst is an uneven-delivery warning

The packet-burst indicator means delivery is uneven or delayed over a short period. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The game service, Wi‑Fi signal, wireless interference, router queues, another device saturating the connection, ISP congestion, upstream routing, server distance, or the console or PC can all be involved. Treat the warning as a prompt to compare conditions rather than as proof that one particular component is defective.

Do these checks before buying hardware

Start with reversible checks. A service outage cannot be repaired with a new cable or router, and a distant server cannot be moved closer by changing a local setting.

  1. Check Call of Duty Online Services. Look for the platform indicator and any incident alert. If the indicator is not green or an alert is active, wait for restoration and retest before changing hardware.
  2. Record a baseline. Note the title and mode, server or matchmaking region if shown, platform, Wi‑Fi or wired state, time, and the exact symptom. Use the same conditions for later comparisons.
  3. Stop competing traffic. Pause game downloads, system updates, cloud backups, file transfers, video streams, and other large uploads or downloads on every device. Disconnect or disable a VPN while testing so it does not add another route variable.
  4. Power-cycle the network. Restart the modem and router according to the manufacturer’s procedure. Wait for both devices to return to their normal connected state, then run the same in-game test.

If the problem disappears after traffic is paused or equipment is restarted, keep testing before concluding that the fix is permanent. A restart can temporarily clear a congested queue, while the underlying traffic pattern or line problem may return.

Step-by-step troubleshooting procedure

1. Verify the service and platform

Open the Call of Duty Online Services status page and check the platform you use. An alert or non-green indicator changes the correct action: wait, capture the incident time, and avoid spending money on local upgrades. If the status is normal, continue with controlled tests.

2. Restart the modem and router correctly

Use the equipment maker’s power-cycle instructions rather than repeatedly pulling cables at random. Once the connection is restored, launch the same Call of Duty mode and region used for your baseline. Record whether the burst warning, loss, or ping changed.

3. Remove traffic that can fill the connection

Pause downloads and updates on the console, PC, phones, televisions, and other computers. Stop cloud synchronization and streaming, and ask other users not to upload or download during the test. Upload saturation is especially disruptive because it can create long queues for small game packets even when a speed test reports a high download rate.

4. Run the built-in platform tests

Use the network diagnostics supplied by your platform and record the exact result.

  • Xbox: open the network settings and run Test network connection, then run Test multiplayer connection.
  • PlayStation: open network settings and run Test Internet Connection.
  • PC: record the game’s connection indicators and run the operating system or router diagnostics available on your setup. Keep the test on the same wired or wireless connection used by the game.

A platform test can reveal a failed internet, NAT, or multiplayer check, but a passing test does not guarantee that a particular Call of Duty server route is healthy. Save screenshots or the reported error text for escalation.

5. Compare a direct Ethernet connection

Connect the console or PC directly to the router with a Cat6 Ethernet cable. Avoid testing through a wireless extender or powerline adapter if the goal is to isolate Wi‑Fi. Play the same mode, in the same region, at a similar time, with competing traffic still paused.

If wired play is stable while Wi‑Fi produces bursts, the improvement points toward wireless interference, weak signal quality, channel congestion, or the wireless equipment. Ethernet removes the Wi‑Fi leg as a variable; it cannot fix a Call of Duty service incident, a distant server, ISP congestion, poor upstream routing, or a problem beyond your router.

  • UPnP: Universal Plug and Play can help a console or PC establish the ports it needs. It is mainly a connection-establishment or NAT measure, not a universal cure for latency or packet burst.
  • Port forwarding: Forward the ports specified for your exact Call of Duty title and platform only when needed. A forwarding rule can address NAT or connection-establishment issues; it cannot create bandwidth or repair a bad route.
  • Static local IP: If you use forwarding, reserve or assign a stable local address using your router’s documented method so the rule does not point to the wrong device after a lease changes.
  • Quality of Service (QoS): On routers that support it, QoS may prioritize game traffic when another device is using the connection. It cannot add capacity, lower the physical distance to a server, or change the game server. Incorrect limits can make performance worse, so measure before and after.
  • DMZ testing for consoles: A router’s DMZ option can be used briefly as a diagnostic for a console NAT problem when the router documentation and platform guidance support it. It exposes the device more broadly than a specific forwarding rule. Undo the DMZ setting immediately after the test; do not treat it as a permanent latency fix.

7. Test another game and another device

Use a second online game on the same platform and connection, then test another device if one is available. Keep the comparison as similar as practical: same wired or Wi‑Fi state, same time window, and the same household traffic restrictions. One-title problems suggest a game-service or route condition. Problems across games and devices point more strongly to the local network, ISP, line quality, or upstream routing.

8. Escalate with evidence

If the issue repeats, prepare a concise record for Activision support or your ISP. Include timestamps with time zone, country or region, platform, Call of Duty title and mode, server region if shown, wired or Wi‑Fi state, platform-test results, whether another game is affected, and whether other household devices are affected. Mention every router change and whether it was reverted. This is more useful than reporting only that the game “lags.”

Ethernet versus Wi‑Fi for Call of Duty

Activision’s connection guidance states that Wi‑Fi has wide variance in reliability and bandwidth, while “Wired Ethernet connections will maintain the minimum bandwidth connection that is required for online gaming.” That makes Ethernet the best controlled comparison when diagnosing packet burst.

Connection choice What it changes What it cannot fix Best diagnostic use
Direct Ethernet to the router Removes the local Wi‑Fi radio, signal strength, interference, and wireless contention from the path. Service outages, distant servers, ISP congestion, upstream routing, or a failing modem or line. Compare against Wi‑Fi under the same mode, region, device, and time window.
Wi‑Fi near the router Convenient connection that may work well when the signal is strong and the channel is clear. It does not guarantee consistent delay; walls, neighboring networks, distance, and other wireless clients can introduce variation. Use only after confirming that the wireless link is stable enough for a controlled test.
Wi‑Fi through an extender or mesh hop Extends coverage to difficult rooms. Additional wireless hops and backhaul contention can add variation; it does not solve ISP or server problems. Compare directly with the main router to identify the extra hop as a factor.

Do not interpret a wired improvement as proof that the router must be replaced. First check placement, interference, wireless configuration, and whether another device is consuming airtime. If Ethernet and Wi‑Fi perform the same way at the same time, look beyond the wireless link.

Use the symptom pattern to locate the fault

Observed pattern Most useful next test What the result suggests
Only Call of Duty shows packet burst Check Call of Duty Online Services, then test another online game on the same connection. A game-service incident, title-specific route, or server-region condition becomes more plausible if the other game is stable.
Every online game on one device is affected Test the same device on direct Ethernet and run the platform network tests. The device, local connection type, NAT setup, or router path deserves attention.
Multiple devices and games are affected Pause all traffic, restart the equipment, then test at another time and contact the ISP if it repeats. Household congestion, line quality, ISP congestion, or upstream routing is more likely than a Call of Duty-only fault.
Problems occur mainly at busy evening hours Compare a quiet-period test with a peak-period test while recording the same indicators. Peak-hour congestion or a route that degrades under load is possible; provide the time pattern to the ISP.
Only Wi‑Fi is affected Compare direct Ethernet from the same room and router port. Wireless interference, signal quality, or wireless congestion is implicated; Ethernet may be a practical solution.
Only one region or server group is affected Compare another available region or mode without changing other variables. Geographic distance or a route-specific issue may be involved. A local hardware purchase is unlikely to change that path.

How router features relate to lag

QoS can manage queues, not create speed

When a connection is busy, large uploads or downloads can sit in a queue ahead of small game packets. QoS on a supported router may give game traffic priority or control the queue. It cannot increase the line’s capacity, improve a damaged cable outside the home, or alter the server’s location. Apply documented limits carefully and compare the same workload before and after.

UPnP and forwarding address NAT conditions

UPnP and port forwarding help devices establish inbound or peer-related connections when NAT prevents them. They are not general-purpose ping reducers. If multiplayer tests report a NAT or connection-establishment failure, these settings are relevant; if the only symptom is high delay to a distant server, changing ports is unlikely to help.

DMZ is a temporary diagnostic, not a performance upgrade

Putting a console in a router DMZ can distinguish a strict NAT configuration from other causes, but it broadens exposure. Use it only for a short test, record the original setting, and remove it afterward. If DMZ changes nothing, that evidence argues against NAT as the source of the packet burst.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the ISP or game service is the right escalation

Contact the ISP when the same repeatable problem affects several games and devices, especially when Ethernet does not help or the issue follows a peak-hour pattern. Ask the ISP to investigate line quality, modem levels, congestion, and routing rather than requesting a generic speed upgrade. Provide timestamps, affected destinations or games, and your wired test results.

Contact Activision support when the issue is confined to Call of Duty, follows a particular title or region, coincides with a service alert, or remains after local tests pass. Include the platform, mode, region, time window, packet-burst or loss indicators, and any platform-test errors. Avoid claiming that a single ping value proves the cause; the comparison record is more actionable.

Prevent packet burst after the connection is stable

  • Keep large downloads, cloud backups, and system updates from running during competitive matches.
  • Prefer direct Ethernet for a console or PC when practical.
  • Keep the router firmware and platform software current using the manufacturer’s normal update process.
  • Leave DMZ disabled unless you are actively performing a documented, temporary test.
  • Review QoS rules after adding a new console, PC, access point, or high-bandwidth service.
  • Record the region, connection type, and time whenever the symptom returns; patterns are more informative than a single speed test.
  • Retest after major changes to the ISP plan, router, modem, home layout, or Call of Duty update because the route and traffic mix may change.

A practical decision sequence

Use this order to minimize cost and avoid changing several variables at once:

  1. Check Call of Duty Online Services and wait if an incident is listed.
  2. Record a baseline with the same mode, region, device, and time window.
  3. Pause downloads, streams, cloud synchronization, updates, and VPNs.
  4. Restart the modem and router using the manufacturer’s procedure.
  5. Run the Xbox or PlayStation network tests, or the equivalent diagnostics on PC.
  6. Compare direct Cat6 Ethernet with Wi‑Fi.
  7. Test another online game and another device.
  8. Only then examine UPnP, forwarding, static IP, QoS, or a brief console DMZ test, changing one setting at a time.
  9. Escalate to Activision or the ISP with timestamps and results when the scope and pattern identify the likely side of the connection.

This sequence separates a service incident, a wireless problem, a busy home network, a NAT configuration, and an ISP or route problem without promising a universal ping target. The useful outcome is not merely a lower number on one test; it is a repeatable connection state in the same Call of Duty conditions where you play.
