Fix Xeon inference failures by identifying when memory or latency breaks, then changing one pressure point at a time. A load-time out-of-resources error usually means the model, precision, cache, or generation settings do not fit available RAM or VRAM. A message such as Memory cgroup out of memory: Killed process indicates that the host cgroup terminated the service. Slow first requests are commonly caused by model loading or compilation, while slow warm requests usually point to concurrency, batching, storage, scheduling, or NUMA placement.

The safest sequence is: confirm the failure phase in server and host logs, reduce the model footprint, control concurrency, reduce compilation pressure, then tune storage and CPU placement while measuring p50, p95, p99 latency and peak memory.

Diagnose the failure before changing settings

Start with three records from the same incident: the inference server log, the OpenVINO Model Server GetModelStatus response, and host or container logs. Correlate their timestamps. Do not treat every “out of memory” message as the same problem.

What you observe Most likely location What to verify
The process is killed and the host reports Memory cgroup out of memory: Killed process Host or container cgroup Peak resident memory, the cgroup limit, and whether another process consumed the remaining allowance
An out-of-resources error appears while loading or compiling the model Model initialization Model size, precision, cache settings, compilation peak RSS, and available RAM or VRAM
Warm requests fail or slow down as traffic rises Steady-state inference Request concurrency, batch size, context length, generation limit, KV-cache growth, and memory over time
Only the first request is slow after startup or reload Cold start Weight reading, model compilation, cache hits, and storage location

OpenVINO’s troubleshooting guidance describes an out-of-resources error during loading as a sign that the selected model, precision, or cache configuration needs more RAM or VRAM than is available. That is different from a host-level cgroup kill, where the operating environment enforced a memory limit. Record which condition occurred before selecting a remedy.

Measure the memory ceiling, not just installed memory

Installed RAM is not the service’s usable ceiling. Account for the operating system, other containers, filesystem cache, device reservations, and the container or cgroup limit. Record peak resident set size (RSS) during both compilation and warm inference. A service can fit comfortably after startup and still fail during compilation if that phase temporarily needs more memory.

Separate cold, warm, and overloaded requests

Measure at least one request immediately after loading, several requests after the model is warm, and a controlled concurrency ramp. Label every result as cold or warm. Without that separation, a compilation delay can be mistaken for an inference regression, or a queueing delay can be blamed on the model itself.

Fix memory exhaustion in a controlled order

Apply the following sequence from the least disruptive software change to the capacity change. After each change, reload the model and repeat the same cold-start and warm-load test.

1. Reduce the model footprint

Choose a smaller model when its quality and capability meet the application’s requirements. If the architecture must remain unchanged, test a lower-precision or quantized variant. Quantization generally reduces weight memory, but validate output quality on the service’s real prompts rather than assuming that a smaller representation is harmless.

For language-model services, memory is not limited to the weights. Reduce the maximum context length, generation limit, or KV-cache allocation when the workload permits. Long contexts retain more attention state, and unrestricted generation allows that state to grow for longer. Limit the number of simultaneous sessions so that each request cannot reserve memory without bound.

These controls trade capability or admission rate for a predictable memory ceiling. Keep the setting that meets the required quality while leaving headroom for normal traffic variation.

2. Increase available memory when capacity is genuinely insufficient

If peak RSS remains above the host or cgroup ceiling after footprint and concurrency controls, add capacity or move the service. A memory upgrade preserves the model and its precision, but it has hardware cost and compatibility requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Xeon systems, an ECC registered DIMM must match the processor SKU, motherboard, DDR generation, rank characteristics, and the platform’s population rules. Verify the board’s supported capacity and slot configuration before ordering. Mixing incompatible modules can prevent boot or reduce the expected capacity. If the existing host cannot be expanded safely, use a host with more available RAM and remeasure the same workload there.

3. Reduce compilation pressure with memory mapping

OpenVINO identifies model compilation as its most RAM-consuming stage. Memory mapping (mmap) allows only the needed weight pages to remain resident and can let repeated compilations share pages. This can lower the compilation peak without changing model behavior.

Keep in mind that mapping is a storage-path decision as well as a memory decision. Test it with the model on the actual storage used in production, and observe both peak RSS and startup time. Do not disable mapping solely because a warm run appears fast; compare complete cold starts and compile peaks.

4. Control concurrency and batching

Every additional active request can add working memory, queueing, or both. Larger batches can improve device utilization and throughput, but they also increase memory use and may raise individual response latency. Intel’s Open Edge Platform guidance warns that larger batches are not suitable for every scenario because they can raise both latency and memory use.

Set an explicit maximum concurrency and batch size. If you use continuous or dynamic batching, define a maximum batch, a waiting window, and an admission limit. Then test the same request mix at increasing concurrency. Stop increasing concurrency when p95 or p99 latency violates the service objective, peak memory approaches the ceiling, or queueing dominates the measured time.

Fix slow responses without creating a new OOM

Cold-start latency: cache the compiled model

Model loading and compilation can dominate the first inference. Enable model caching when the deployment supports it, and keep the cache across routine restarts. Confirm that the cache is valid for the model version, OpenVINO version, device, precision, and relevant compile settings; otherwise the service may compile again or reject the cache.

Measure the first request after a true process start separately from the first request after a cache hit. A cache that improves startup does not necessarily change warm-request latency.

Storage latency: compare local and remote paths

OpenVINO notes that models on removable or network drives can load more slowly. Compare a local copy with the production storage path using the same model and cache state. A local NVMe SSD may be a reasonable upgrade candidate if storage reads are the bottleneck, but measure before and after; faster storage cannot fix a CPU scheduling or memory-bandwidth problem.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Memory mapping is normally useful, yet the storage path can change its behavior. If mapping on the production path is unexpectedly slow, test reading instead with ov::enable_mmap(false). Keep the option that produces the best cold-start result without causing an unacceptable compilation memory peak.

Warm-request latency: use latency-oriented scheduling

Use OpenVINO’s latency hint when short response time is the priority. The guidance for low latency emphasizes running only one inference at a time on one device; that is a latency-oriented baseline, not a universal throughput setting. If the application needs more throughput, increase concurrency in measured steps and watch tail latency.

On 5th Gen Xeon platforms, sub-NUMA cluster configuration and memory pressure influence thread scheduling. Verify which socket and NUMA node execute the service, where its memory is allocated, and whether threads are crossing sockets to reach data. More threads are not automatically faster: oversubscription and remote-memory access can increase contention and response time.

Batching: choose throughput or tail latency deliberately

Batching combines work to improve utilization. It can be useful for offline or queue-tolerant workloads, but waiting for a batch adds delay to an individual request. Compare p50, p95, and p99 latency at the target arrival rate, not only aggregate throughput. A configuration that raises tokens per second while breaching the p99 objective is not a latency fix.

A repeatable tuning procedure

  1. Freeze the test description. Record the model and model version, OpenVINO version, Xeon SKU, socket count, NUMA mode, precision, context length, generation limit, batch size, concurrency, stream settings, storage path, and whether the run is cold or warm.
  2. Capture a baseline. Measure p50, p95, and p99 latency, throughput, error rate, compilation time, warm-request time, and peak RSS. Note whether memory is host RAM, device VRAM, or a cgroup limit.
  3. Reproduce the failure phase. Run a cold start, a steady warm workload, and a controlled concurrency ramp. Match the traffic shape that caused the incident instead of testing one isolated request.
  4. Change one variable. For example, lower the context limit without changing precision or concurrency. A one-variable change lets you attribute any improvement or regression.
  5. Re-test quality and capacity. For a quantized model, check task accuracy and output behavior. For a concurrency change, check queueing, tail latency, and peak memory. For a storage change, repeat a cold start.
  6. Keep a rollback point. Retain the previous model, cache, and service limits until the new configuration survives the same workload and a traffic-spike test.

Compare remedies by the trade-off that matters

Remedy Peak-memory effect Latency effect Throughput effect Quality or capacity trade-off Operational cost
Smaller model Usually lowers weight and compile memory May improve load and inference time Often increases capacity per host Capability or output quality may change Model validation and deployment work
Lower-precision or quantized model Usually lowers weight memory Can improve or worsen latency depending on execution path May permit more concurrent work Quality must be measured on real prompts Calibration, validation, and rollout
Shorter context or generation limit Reduces KV-cache growth Can reduce long-request time Allows more requests within a memory ceiling Less context or shorter answers API limits and client communication
Concurrency cap Places a predictable ceiling on active-request memory Often protects p95 and p99 under load Limits peak admission and may reduce total throughput Requests may queue or receive overload responses Queue and back-pressure policy
Smaller or bounded batches Reduces batch working memory Usually lowers per-request waiting and execution time May reduce utilization Less batching efficiency Batch-policy tuning
Memory mapping Can reduce resident compile pages and share repeated pages May help compilation, but storage path matters Does not inherently improve warm inference No model-quality change Storage-path testing
Model cache Does not remove the model’s steady-state footprint Can materially reduce repeated cold-start time Faster readiness after restart Cache invalidation and compatibility checks Persistent cache management
More compatible RAM or a larger host Raises the hard capacity ceiling May prevent paging or OOM-related stalls Preserves model and concurrency options Hardware cost and platform compatibility Procurement, installation, and validation
NUMA and thread placement Can reduce memory contention May improve tail latency when placement is correct Depends on workload and socket balance Configuration complexity Platform-specific testing

Common failure modes and recovery paths

The service is killed during startup after the model was changed

Check compilation peak RSS first. A larger model, higher precision, new cache setting, or longer context can exceed the startup ceiling even if the old model ran normally. Temporarily use a smaller or lower-precision model, enable memory mapping, or move compilation to a host with more capacity. Once the model loads, test warm memory separately.

Memory grows only when traffic rises

Inspect active sessions, context lengths, generation limits, and batch formation. Add an explicit concurrency cap and bounded request limits. If memory still climbs after traffic stops, look for retained sessions or cache behavior in the service rather than adding threads.

First inference is slow but later requests are acceptable

Measure loading and compilation separately, then enable and validate model caching. Check whether the model is on removable or network storage. Compare a local copy and, if necessary, test ov::enable_mmap(false). Do not judge the change from warm requests alone.

More threads made p99 worse

Revert the thread increase and inspect NUMA placement, memory bandwidth, and concurrent request count. On multi-socket Xeon systems, additional threads can increase contention or remote-memory traffic. Apply a latency-oriented setting, verify socket affinity, and retest at the actual target concurrency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Batching improved throughput but caused timeouts

Reduce the maximum batch or waiting window, or reserve batching for workloads that tolerate delay. Check p95 and p99, not only average latency and throughput. Keep a separate policy for interactive requests if the same service handles both interactive and batch traffic.

A memory upgrade did not solve the error

Confirm that the operating system and container actually see the added capacity and that the cgroup limit was raised where appropriate. Recheck the failure phase: a device-VRAM limit, a model compile spike, or a separate process may still be the binding constraint. More host RAM cannot fix a VRAM ceiling or an unchanged container limit.

What to monitor after the fix

  • Peak RSS during model load, compilation, and warm inference
  • Available host memory and the applicable cgroup limit
  • Device memory or VRAM utilization when acceleration is used
  • Cold-start, cache-hit startup, and warm-request latency
  • p50, p95, and p99 response times under representative concurrency
  • Queue depth, rejected or timed-out requests, and active sessions
  • Batch size, context length, generation length, and model-cache hit rate
  • Socket, NUMA-node, and memory-bandwidth behavior on multi-socket hosts

Set alerts on the indicators that precede failure: rising peak RSS, increasing tail latency, sustained queue growth, repeated cache misses, or a narrowing gap between peak memory and the enforced ceiling. Re-run the baseline after model, OpenVINO, kernel, firmware, hardware, or traffic-shape changes.
