If OBS shows a black image when you play a local video, first check how you added it: use a Media Source (or, as an alternative, VLC Video) to play a file inside an OBS scene. Use Window Capture only when you specifically need to capture a separate player window. Then check the source and file, test Media Source with hardware decoding off, and compare playback in VLC Video. No one setting fixes every case; the right diagnosis depends on your OBS version, operating system, file codec, and source type.

First identify how OBS is supposed to show the video

OBS has distinct sources for playing media and capturing another application. If your goal is to play a local file in the scene, add it as a Media Source. OBS also offers VLC Video, which uses VLC libraries for extended media support. Window Capture is for capturing a separate application window, such as a player you have opened outside OBS.

An OBS forum exchange about a black VLC window recommended using Media Source or VLC Source instead of capturing VLC with Window Capture. That example involved Windows 8.1, OBS 25.0.8, and VLC 3.0.11, so it illustrates the difference between the workflows rather than proving a universal fix for current versions. OBS forum discussion

Check the source and file basics

  1. Confirm the source type. If you intend to play a file in OBS, use Media Source or VLC Video—not Window Capture of a player unless capturing that player window is intentional.
  2. Check the active scene. Make sure the source is in the scene you are viewing and is visible in the Sources list.
  3. Check its position in the scene. A source above it may cover the video. Temporarily hide other sources to see whether the image appears.
  4. Verify the file selection. Open the source properties and confirm it points to the intended local file.

These are basic setup checks, not a diagnosis. OBS documentation lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM as Media Source file extensions. That list does not establish compatibility with every codec, profile, or file encoded in those containers. If a listed extension still gives a black image, identify the actual video codec rather than assuming the extension guarantees playback. OBS Project: Media Sources

Test Media Source with hardware decoding disabled

  1. In the OBS scene, select the Media Source and open its Properties.
  2. Find Use hardware decoding when available. If it is enabled, turn it off, apply the change, and play the file again.
  3. If there is no change, restore the original setting if needed and continue to the VLC Video comparison.

Hardware decoding asks the GPU to decode certain files when a suitable decoder is available; OBS documents the option as off by default. Disabling it is a reversible test, not a guaranteed fix. A historical OBS issue reported a black WebM Media Source after hardware decoding was enabled on macOS 13 with OBS 28.1.2. That report supports testing the setting in that kind of situation, not a broad claim about current OBS versions or all GPUs. OBS Studio issue #7524

Compare playback with VLC Video

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed. VLC Video uses VLC libraries and becomes available as a source when those libraries are installed.
  2. In the scene, add a VLC Video source and select the same file.
  3. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS specifies that the VLC architecture must match OBS.
  4. Compare whether VLC Video shows the image and whether audio plays in either source.

If VLC Video displays the picture but Media Source does not, you have narrowed the problem to a difference in playback or decoding paths; that result alone does not identify the codec or prove a permanent fix. VLC Video is an alternative to test, not a promise that every file will work. OBS Project: Media Sources

If both sources still show black

Gather details before changing codecs, drivers, or hardware. The extension identifies the container, but a codec inspection is needed to learn what video is encoded inside it. Check whether the file plays in a standalone player, and note whether OBS plays audio while the image remains black.

  • Operating system and version
  • OBS version and, if you tested it, VLC version
  • File extension and video codec (and profile if known)
  • Source type used in OBS and whether audio plays
  • Whether Media Source hardware decoding is enabled
  • GPU and driver details
  • An OBS log from a session that reproduces the problem

These details help distinguish a source-selection problem from a file-decoding issue. The available OBS documentation and reports do not establish a universal codec fix. If a black screen occurs only with Window Capture of a game or application, investigate that capture problem separately; it is not the same as a black Media Source file.

Do not confuse a black image with choppy playback

A static black image and video that stutters or lags are different symptoms. OBS’s performance guidance addresses choppy output and overloaded GPU or encoding workloads; it does not establish those conditions as the cause of a file that consistently displays black. If the video is also choppy or OBS reports overload, try freeing GPU capacity, simplifying resource-heavy scenes, or lowering output resolution or frame rate where appropriate.
