If OBS keeps failing to reconnect to YouTube Live, first find out whether the connection is dropping or YouTube is rejecting the stream setup. Rising dropped frames or an unstable stream-health warning usually point to the network path or a bitrate your upload cannot sustain. A specific startup, stream-key, URL, SSL, or timeout error points instead to the ingest configuration. Check both OBS and YouTube Live Control Room before changing settings, then follow the matching troubleshooting branch.
Diagnose the failure before changing settings
In OBS, watch the dropped-frames counter and connection status while the problem occurs. In YouTube Live Control Room, open Stream health and read the exact status message. Note whether OBS still shows local video and audio, and whether YouTube receives a preview.

OBS Project’s stream connection troubleshooting guide says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. It also notes that these problems are typically outside OBS’s control. YouTube’s stream-health guidance provides status messages and instructions for specific incoming-stream problems.
Fix a connection that is dropping frames
1. Lower the bitrate to suit stable upload capacity
In OBS, open Settings → Output and reduce Video Bitrate. OBS Project’s 2024 guide suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed. Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee: use sustained, reliable upload capacity rather than a brief peak speed-test result, and retest under a similar stream workload.

YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrates, as accessed in 2026, include:

These are YouTube recommendations, not minimum requirements or a guarantee of stability. The appropriate bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, and the upload connection’s ability to sustain it. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance also covers RTMP/RTMPS, supported H.264, H.265, and AV1 options, CBR, and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds). Test the full configuration before going live, as YouTube advises.

2. Check the physical and wireless network path
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test with Ethernet if possible. OBS warns that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming.
- If the modem or router appears to have connectivity trouble, restart it and test again.
- If the connection remains unreliable and you cannot identify a faulty device, ask your ISP to help diagnose the connection before replacing networking hardware.
A wired connection can help isolate Wi-Fi instability, but it will not fix an ISP routing issue or an upload plan that cannot sustain the chosen bitrate.
3. Temporarily isolate software that may interfere
Test whether a VPN changes the connection; VPN routing can be unstable. Firewall or antivirus software may also interfere with OBS’s connection to the ingest server. If you temporarily disable security software to test, do so only briefly, then re-enable it. If the test identifies interference, create an OBS exception rather than leaving protection off.

Review network “boost,” “optimizer,” or prioritization software and update network drivers if appropriate. OBS names Lenovo Vantage Network Boost and Killer NIC software as examples; they are not an exhaustive list of possible conflicts.
4. Review OBS network options
In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network and confirm Bind to IP is set to Default. On Windows, you can test Enable network optimizations and Enable TCP pacing. You can also test IPv4 Only; if it does not help, restore IPv4 and IPv6.

If the cause cannot be fixed, Dynamic Bitrate can reduce dropped frames by lowering quality during congestion. It is a fallback that trades image quality for continuity, not a remedy for the underlying network problem.

Verify the stream key and destination
For an encoder startup error, YouTube directs third-party encoder users to copy the stream key from Live Control Room and update the encoder. Confirm that the key and stream URL belong to the intended stream. Use this check when the error points to credentials or destination setup; changing a key does not fix a connection that is losing packets or cannot sustain its bitrate. Match RTMPS and SSL errors to the protocol
If YouTube reports an RTMPS error, verify that the server URL uses RTMPS rather than RTMP and that the encoder supports RTMPS. For an SSL error, YouTube also suggests specifying port 443. For a timeout, check the URL and encoder support. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL encryption; follow YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance for the reported error.
Escalate with useful evidence
If OBS continues dropping frames after you have checked bitrate, the local network, and possible software interference, test outbound connectivity and contact your ISP. Congestion or routing problems can occur beyond your own equipment. If the outbound connection appears stable but YouTube still marks the stream unhealthy, keep the OBS log and YouTube’s exact status message together for support.
There is no universal reconnect timer or retry-count setting established by the official troubleshooting guidance as the fix for failed reconnect attempts. Reinstalling OBS or buying new networking hardware is not a universal remedy; first use the observed error and connection evidence to identify the fault area.
