First, check whether the video is frozen in OBS’s Media Source preview or only in the YouTube broadcast. If it is already frozen in OBS, troubleshoot media playback, decoding, or OBS performance. If OBS keeps moving but YouTube’s feed degrades, investigate OBS’s stream-health indicators and the network connection. A viewer-only buffering report points to a different problem again.
Make one change at a time and compare the same source in OBS and YouTube. This helps isolate the failing layer without restarting everything or changing settings that are unrelated to the symptom.
Identify where the picture stops
Compare the OBS preview with YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and OBS’s status indicators while the issue is happening. These comparisons are diagnostic clues, not guarantees: playback, rendering, encoding, network ingest, and viewer playback can fail independently.
- The Media Source is frozen in OBS: Start with its playback properties, the media file or decoder, and OBS resource use.
- OBS preview is animated, but YouTube reports a poor or missing feed: Check the stream-health messages and OBS network status. Network dropped frames concern the OBS-to-YouTube connection, not a file that is visibly frozen inside OBS.
- OBS and the broadcast preview look healthy, but some viewers report buffering: OBS notes that buffering can occur without OBS dropped frames. Viewers have different devices and internet connections, so a report from one viewer does not by itself establish an encoder or source fault.
OBS and YouTube document these behaviors separately; the comparisons above help narrow the investigation but cannot identify every cause without the specific stream’s indicators or logs.

Check the Media Source properties
In OBS, open the affected Media Source’s properties and check the playback controls against what the stream is meant to do. The options below are documented in OBS’s Media Sources article, dated January 11, 2022. Defaults refer to that documentation; labels or availability can vary in the current OBS interface.
Loop and playback completion
- Loop: Enable this when a single clip should repeat after it reaches the end. OBS documents Loop as off by default. A file that finishes with Loop off can look like a freeze if you expect it to continue.
- Show nothing when playback ends: Check this if the source disappears or appears to hold on its final frame. This setting hides the source when playback completes; it does not make the file repeat.
Scene activation and hidden sources
- Restart playback when source becomes active: OBS documents this as restarting the file when the source is in the current scene and visible; it is on by default. If the symptom occurs after switching scenes or showing the source again, test this behavior deliberately.
- Close file when inactive: This unloads the media file while the source is hidden or off-scene, freeing memory. OBS warns that the file may take a short time to appear when shown again. If freezes cluster around scene changes, temporarily disable this option as a controlled test; a reload delay is a possible trade-off.
Hardware decoding
Use hardware decoding when available is optional and off by default. It uses the GPU for supported file types when appropriate decoding hardware is available. Test it both enabled and disabled: OBS does not promise that toggling it will fix freezes, and it is not a universal remedy.
Playlist or extended media tests
For playlists or extended media support, OBS documents VLC Video as an alternative source type. VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Loop Playlist is on by default for VLC Video, and its visibility behavior can be configured. Treat a switch to VLC Video as a controlled test: it changes the playback path and adds a VLC dependency, so it is not an assured repair.

Distinguish playback trouble from OBS performance overload
OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes. If its status indicators or logs point to rendering lag or encoding overload, work on scene and output load rather than assuming the Media Source itself is defective. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide recommends reducing unnecessary sources and filters, using lower-resolution media when the output does not need the original resolution, and considering a lower output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not working, OBS suggests trying 30 fps.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Test with a simpler scene and fewer unnecessary filters or sources.
- Use a lower-resolution version of the media if full source resolution is not needed for the output.
- Consider reducing output resolution or frame rate when performance indicators support that diagnosis.
These adjustments can reduce rendering or encoding pressure; they are not direct Media Source fixes unless performance symptoms point to that layer. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether the status indicators improve.
Investigate network drops only when the signs point to the connection
OBS defines dropped frames as a connection that is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; excessive drops can disconnect a stream. If OBS reports network drops while the source still moves in its preview, use OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance:

- Choose a bitrate your stable upload connection can sustain; reduce it if the connection cannot maintain the configured rate.
- Check whether a VPN, security application, or network-management software is interfering with the stream.
- Consider wired networking if the connection is unstable; OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unreliable.
- Treat dynamic bitrate as a fallback, not a root-cause fix. It can lower quality to adapt to changing network conditions.
Do not apply network remedies to a file that is already visibly frozen in OBS unless network indicators also point to a connection problem. OBS’s Stream Buffering Troubleshooting article also explains why viewer buffering can happen without dropped frames in OBS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify YouTube encoder settings and preflight the stream
YouTube’s Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page recommends testing with audio and movement representative of the planned broadcast before going live, then monitoring stream health and messages. Its guidance depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; it is not a special 24/7 bitrate prescription.
- YouTube’s currently published encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1.
- The page lists up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval, not over 4 seconds.
- Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check YouTube’s current table for the combination you use, and make sure your stable upload can support it.
- YouTube says it automatically transcodes live video into different output formats.
Encoder recommendations and software labels can change, so verify the current YouTube table and OBS interface when configuring a stream. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a special 24/7 bitrate or a guaranteed preflight duration.

Use a controlled troubleshooting sequence
When a freeze recurs, record where it appears and what the indicators say before changing settings. Then isolate the relevant variable:
- Compare the source in OBS with YouTube’s Live Control Room and note whether the problem affects all viewers or only some.
- If the source is frozen in OBS, verify Loop and playback-end behavior; check whether it happens on scene activation; then test hardware decoding on and off.
- If the symptom follows hiding or showing a source, test Close file when inactive and account for the possible reload delay.
- If OBS reports rendering lag or encoding overload, simplify the scene or reduce output demands, then check whether those performance indicators change.
- If OBS reports dropped frames, investigate stable upload, software interference, and the network path; lower bitrate only if the connection cannot sustain the configured rate.
- Before the next broadcast, test representative movement and audio, and monitor OBS status and YouTube stream health.
Each step isolates a different possibility; changing several settings at once can make the cause harder to identify. Changes to a live scene or encoder can interrupt the broadcast, so make disruptive tests when a brief interruption is acceptable.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the recurring issue is the need to keep OBS and a computer running for a continuous prerecorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera.
