First identify what is freezing: the video source, OBS’s preview, the stream connection, or playback for viewers. Those symptoms point to different fixes. For one local video, check the OBS Media Source’s Loop setting; for a playlist, check VLC Video’s Loop Playlist. If the preview stutters, investigate rendering or encoding load. If OBS reports dropped frames, investigate the connection to YouTube’s ingest server. If only viewers report buffering, the issue may be on the delivery or viewer side.
Identify where the freeze happens
Before changing settings, watch OBS and check what viewers experience. A video that stops while OBS remains responsive is different from a frozen preview or an unstable connection. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance separates local rendering and encoding problems from dropped frames and viewer buffering.
- Only the prerecorded video stops: Check the media source type and its loop setting.
- The preview or OBS output stutters: Investigate scene complexity, GPU rendering load, and encoding workload.
- OBS’s dropped-frame counter rises: Investigate the connection to the remote stream server and whether it can sustain the configured bitrate. OBS describes dropped frames as a connection-stability or bitrate-capacity issue, not proof that the media loop failed. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting (dated 2024-09-30).
- Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no dropped frames: Follow the viewer-delivery branch rather than assuming the local source has frozen. Viewer networks, devices, and the platform’s delivery capabilities can affect playback. OBS Stream Buffering Troubleshooting.
These clues narrow the problem; none by itself establishes a root cause. If you need help diagnosing it, note your operating system, OBS version, source type, file format and codec, when the freeze occurs, whether the preview freezes, the dropped-frame counter, and relevant hardware details.
Check the prerecorded video source and loop setting
For one local video: Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene containing the video.
- In the Sources list, select the existing Media Source, or add one with the
+button and choose Media Source. - Open the source’s properties and confirm that it points to the intended local file.
- Enable Loop if the file should start again when playback completes.
Loop controls replay after the file finishes. It is separate from Restart playback when source becomes active, which concerns playback when the source becomes active in a scene. Show nothing when playback ends controls what is displayed at the end; it does not enable looping. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.

For a playlist: VLC Video
- Install VLC if it is not already installed.
- In OBS, add or select a VLC Video source and configure its playlist.
- Check Loop Playlist so playback repeats when the playlist finishes.
OBS documents VLC Video as a playlist-capable alternative and lists Loop Playlist as on by default. The OBS documentation says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC, so match the application architecture. See OBS Media Sources.
If OBS’s preview or output stutters
When the interface or preview is also affected, a looping setting alone is unlikely to explain the whole symptom. OBS rendering and encoding depend on the workload: scene complexity, sources, output resolution, frame rate, and encoder all matter. OBS notes that sources may still use resources even when they are not visible. Try one change at a time so you can see whether it helps.

Reduce scene and rendering load
- Remove unnecessary sources and simplify complex scenes.
- Reduce the resolution of sources that do not need to be shown at full size.
- Lower the output resolution or frame rate if the current settings overload the system. OBS specifically suggests reducing 60 fps to 30 fps when 60 fps is not working; this lowers workload but also reduces motion smoothness.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator as a troubleshooting step for some GPU-overload cases. It is not a guaranteed fix or a setting every user must change.

Consider a hardware encoder if encoding is the bottleneck
A compatible hardware encoder can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU. Availability and support vary by platform and hardware, and older encoder generations may produce lower image quality at the same bitrate. It is a possible workload adjustment, not a universal cure for source playback or network problems. OBS documents platform and encoder constraints for NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox in its Hardware Encoding guide.

If dropped frames or viewer buffering are the problem
Dropped frames in OBS
When OBS reports dropped frames, investigate connection stability to the selected stream server and whether your connection can sustain the configured bitrate. This symptom points to the network path or bitrate capacity; changing a local media source’s loop setting does not address that diagnosis. Follow the steps in OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
Buffering reported only by viewers
If OBS is not reporting dropped frames but viewers still buffer, do not treat that alone as evidence that OBS stopped playing the file. Viewers may have different network conditions or devices, and platform delivery and transcoding affect what playback options are available. Consult OBS Stream Buffering Troubleshooting and compare reports from more than one viewer if possible.

Why meeting OBS’s system requirements may not be enough
Baseline compatibility does not prove that a particular machine can sustain a specific stream or recording workload. OBS says CPU demands vary with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity, and its System Requirements page cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” Compare the actual workload and symptom, rather than assuming the computer is either adequate or inadequate from the requirements page alone.
