First find where the picture disappears: OBS preview, a local recording, or YouTube’s Live Control Room. That tells you whether to troubleshoot the scene and capture source, the recording/output path, or a YouTube-side interruption. There is no single fix without knowing the operating system, OBS version, game or VOD player, and capture source.
Find where the picture turns black
Use the same scene and playback for each check. YouTube recommends checking the Live Control Room preview before starting and monitoring the stream’s audio and video. YouTube live streaming tips – Computer
- Check the OBS preview. If it is black, start with the active scene, source visibility and order, selected capture method, and whether the source targets the correct game or player.
- Make a short local recording. If the preview looks right but the recording is black, check whether the source disappears, changes, or becomes hidden during playback. Some fullscreen games stop rendering when you switch away from them.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. If OBS preview and the recording both show the image but YouTube does not, inspect the outgoing stream feed and YouTube preview instead of assuming Game Capture is broken. YouTube describes encoder streaming as sending an encoded feed to its service; see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Look for a YouTube warning or placeholder. If OBS shows the VOD but YouTube replaces the picture or interrupts the stream, check the live dashboard for a rights notice before changing OBS settings.
If the OBS preview is black
For a game, OBS Game Capture hooks a supported game process; it is not guaranteed to work with every game. Try the following checks one at a time so you can tell which change matters. OBS’s Game Capture Troubleshooting page (dated January 12, 2022) includes game-specific compatibility notes and alternatives.
- Check the scene and source. Select the intended scene, make sure the capture source is visible and not covered by another source, and confirm it is aimed at the game you are playing.
- Test without overlays and hook conflicts. Close overlays, FPS counters, and other applications that may interfere with capture. OBS specifically discusses conflicts such as RTSS/MSI Afterburner and a compatibility setting for newer RTSS versions.
- Try windowed or borderless fullscreen. OBS recommends these modes for some titles. For games that do not allow Game Capture hooking, OBS lists Window Capture as an alternative.
- Use administrator mode only when appropriate. OBS lists launching it as administrator for select games; it is not a universal fix.
- Check GPU assignment on laptops and multi-GPU systems. OBS links to GPU-selection guidance and a Minecraft-specific note about using the same GPU for OBS and Minecraft.
- Follow the game’s compatibility note. OBS documents title-specific workarounds, which can include administrator mode, Window Capture, or DX11. Do not assume one setting applies to every game.
If the VOD is playing in a separate app or browser
A VOD playing in a browser or media player is an application window, not necessarily a game process that Game Capture can hook. Confirm which OBS source captures that player, then test Window Capture or Display Capture as appropriate. Display Capture can help determine whether the problem is specific to the window or game capture method, but it may also reveal unrelated desktop content, so frame the scene carefully.

A black rectangle alone does not establish that DRM is responsible. The OBS guidance describes capture alternatives and game limitations; it does not establish that YouTube VOD playback is universally blocked from capture. The cause depends on the particular video, playback route, and source behavior.
If the game disappears when you alt-tab
OBS explains that a game running in fullscreen may stop rendering when you alt-tab, so it will not appear in OBS while minimized. That describes the game’s rendering behavior after focus changes; it does not prove the VOD is protected or uncapturable. Keep the game visible during the test, use a second monitor, or make a short recording to distinguish this behavior from a broken capture source. If OBS looks right but YouTube is black or interrupted
Check YouTube’s preview and live dashboard before changing capture settings. YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party content. If identified material remains, the service may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. YouTube’s live-stream terms also say the provider represents that they have the necessary rights to the content. These are distinct from an OBS capture failure; a black YouTube picture by itself does not prove a copyright action. Review Copyright issues with live streams and the Livestream terms and conditions.

If the cause is still unclear, share the details that identify the failing stage: your operating system and OBS version; the game or VOD player and capture source; whether OBS preview, local recording, and YouTube preview are black; and any YouTube Studio warning. Without those details, the cause cannot be narrowed down reliably.
