Most NVIDIA and AMD driver failures can be separated into three situations: Windows is still installing a driver in the background, the new package conflicts with remnants or another Windows component, or the crash has a power, connection, system-file, or hardware cause. Start by recording your GPU, Windows version, current driver, and the event that preceded the failure. Then let Windows Update finish, reinstall the exact vendor package, and escalate to Safe Mode cleanup only when a normal clean installation does not work.
A clean driver installation repairs software state; it does not prove that the graphics card, power supply, PCIe slot, cable, or riser is healthy. A persistent no-signal condition, repeated timeout, WHEA event, or Device Manager Code 43 needs the hardware and Windows checks described below.
Choose the right path for the symptom

Record context before changing anything
Write down the exact GPU model, Windows edition and version, installed driver version, and whether the problem began after a driver update, a Windows update, a new application, or a hardware change. Note whether a reboot restores the display, whether only one game fails, and whether the monitor says “no signal” or Windows is visible but applications crash. This information determines whether you are troubleshooting an installation transaction, a display-output path, a driver timeout, or a broader stability problem.

- Record whether the GPU is connected directly to the motherboard or through a riser cable.
- Note whether the power supply uses separate PCIe power cables for each GPU connector.
- If the system still boots, save important work before removing the active display driver.
Let Windows Update finish before a manual NVIDIA installation
NVIDIA documents a common conflict on a fresh Windows installation, after a major update, or on the first boot: Windows can silently download and install a display driver while you start the manual installer. NVIDIA Support’s 2025 guidance estimates that this background transaction may begin after 5–10 minutes and recommends letting a first boot sit for at least 15 minutes so it can complete.

- On the first boot after installing or updating Windows, leave the computer idle for at least 15 minutes. Keep the display connected and do not repeatedly start the NVIDIA installer during this period.
- Restart Windows after the wait. A reboot lets the pending driver transaction finish cleanly.
- Run the downloaded NVIDIA package again.
- Choose Custom (Advanced) when offered, then select Perform a clean installation.
- Restart once the installer completes, even if it does not explicitly demand a reboot.
If the installation still fails, capture the installer message before trying another package. Repeatedly launching the same installer while Windows is still servicing a driver can reproduce the conflict rather than fix it.
Understand AMD installer error numbers
AMD’s installer uses specific numbers that point to different conditions. Resolve the condition named by the error instead of treating every failure as a bad download.

For Error 1603, temporarily closing nonessential applications can remove a software conflict. Do not leave security software disabled as a permanent workaround; if it is suspected of blocking the installer, restore normal protection after the test. Missing Windows updates, corrupted Visual C++ components, registry damage, and system-file corruption each require repair rather than another copy of the same driver package.

Use the vendor installer’s clean option first
NVIDIA
- Download the package that matches the exact GPU and Windows version before removing the current driver.
- Close games, monitoring utilities, overclocking tools, browsers with hardware-accelerated video, and other unnecessary applications.
- Start the installer and select Custom (Advanced).
- Enable Perform a clean installation. This replaces NVIDIA driver components and resets the installation state; it does not repair physical seating, power delivery, or a failing GPU.
- Reboot and test the workload that originally failed.
AMD
- Download the matching AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition package first.
- Use the installer’s Clean Install or Factory Reset option when it is available for your package.
- Let the process complete without launching games or tuning tools, then reboot.
- Test at stock settings before reapplying overclocks, undervolts, custom fan curves, or third-party overlays.
AMD also provides a Cleanup Utility for cases where the regular clean option cannot remove an incomplete installation. Factory Reset and the Cleanup Utility are software-removal measures; they are not evidence that the GPU itself is sound.
Escalate to DDU or AMD Cleanup Utility in Safe Mode
Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a cross-vendor third-party removal tool intended to clear residual display-driver files before reinstalling an OEM package. Its guidance recommends preparing the replacement driver first, using Safe Mode, and keeping the internet disconnected during cleanup and installation so Windows Update does not immediately substitute another package. AMD’s Cleanup Utility provides an AMD-specific alternative.
Prepare before entering Safe Mode
- Download the exact NVIDIA or AMD driver package and confirm that it is stored locally.
- Download DDU or the AMD Cleanup Utility from its legitimate publisher source.
- Save open work and disconnect Ethernet or disable Wi-Fi before starting removal. The goal is to prevent Windows Update from racing the installer.
- If BitLocker or another recovery control is enabled, make sure you know the recovery requirements before changing boot settings.
Recommended cleanup sequence
- Open Windows recovery options and boot into Safe Mode. The exact menu wording can vary by Windows version, but the path is through Windows’ advanced startup/recovery screen and Startup Settings.
- Run DDU, or run AMD Cleanup Utility for an AMD-only cleanup. Select the action that removes the display driver and restarts the computer.
- Expect the screen to flicker or briefly turn black while the active display driver is removed. That short interruption is normal for this operation.
- Remain disconnected from the internet after reboot and run the prepared OEM installer.
- Choose NVIDIA’s Perform a clean installation, or AMD’s Clean Install/Factory Reset option when offered.
- Reboot again. Only after Windows loads normally should you reconnect the network.
If the screen stays black through the reboot, cannot show firmware or recovery output, or the monitor continues to report no signal, stop treating the event as ordinary DDU behavior. Check the display cable and input, test another output if available, reseat the card, verify every required power connector, and determine whether Windows is actually booting.

Separate an install-time black screen from a persistent no-signal fault
Black screen only while the driver changes
Driver removal and installation can temporarily unload the active display driver. Flicker or a short black interval during that phase is expected. Wait for the process to finish and judge the result only after the planned reboot.

Confirm the monitor is on the correct input and that the cable is connected to the GPU output rather than an unused motherboard output. If possible, test another cable, port, or display. Windows may be running even when the selected display output is wrong.
No signal before Windows appears
A no-signal condition that begins before Windows loads points away from a normal driver-install problem. Power down, reseat the GPU in its PCIe slot, check that all required power connectors are fully inserted, and remove a riser cable temporarily if one is present. Use independent PCIe power cables from the power supply rather than relying on a questionable split arrangement. Confirm that the power supply meets the GPU’s requirements.

Screen returns only after a reboot
That pattern can still be a driver or Windows transaction issue, but it can also indicate a timeout, unstable settings, or a marginal connection. Continue with the stability checks below instead of repeatedly reinstalling.

AMD’s stability guidance lists random reboots, hangs, Timeout Detection and Recovery events, blue-screen errors, and WHEA hardware-error events as symptoms that warrant broader testing. Apply these checks in a controlled order.
Return the system to known-good settings
- Remove GPU overclocks and undervolts, CPU overclocks, and aggressive memory profiles while testing.
- Close overlays, capture software, tuning utilities, and other nonessential startup items.
- Use Windows selective startup to isolate non-Microsoft services and startup programs. Re-enable items in groups after the system proves stable.
Check Windows integrity
- Install pending Windows updates, then reboot before another driver attempt.
- Run System File Checker and act on any repair result it reports.
- Use System Restore when the failures began immediately after a known software change and a suitable restore point exists.
Read the release notes and test a rollback when justified
Driver updates can introduce application-specific regressions. AMD’s release notes for Software: Adrenalin Edition 24.5.1, dated May 23, 2024, document an intermittent application crash or driver timeout on specified RDNA 3 scenarios. When the release notes for your GPU and workload describe the same behavior, install an earlier, known-good package rather than assuming the newest version is always the correct one. Keep the older package available locally so you can reverse the test.

Check physical installation and power
- Power down and verify that the GPU is fully seated in the PCIe slot.
- Use direct, independent power-supply cables for the GPU’s connectors.
- Confirm the power supply meets the GPU’s stated power requirements and that connectors are not damaged or overheated.
- Temporarily remove a riser cable from the path when one is used.
- Inspect for an obvious loose cable, damaged connector, or obstruction that prevents the card from sitting squarely.
These checks matter because a successful software reinstall cannot correct an intermittent power or PCIe connection.
Use Device Manager’s Code 43 as a clue, not a diagnosis
Microsoft defines Code 43 as the graphics-device driver notifying Windows that the device is not working properly. The code confirms a device/driver problem state, but it does not tell you whether the root cause is corrupted software, a failed update, insufficient or unstable power, a bad connection, or a defective component.
- Open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, and open the affected device’s Properties to read the complete status message.
- Reinstall the package supplied for the exact GPU by its manufacturer. Microsoft directs users to the device manufacturer when Windows cannot find a newer driver.
- If Code 43 returns after a controlled clean installation, perform the PCIe, power, cable, riser, selective-startup, System File Checker, and rollback checks rather than repeating the same installer indefinitely.
Keep Windows from replacing the package during cleanup
The safest temporary measure during DDU or AMD Cleanup Utility work is procedural: prepare the driver first, disconnect the internet, clean in Safe Mode, install the prepared package, reboot, and reconnect only after the installation is complete. This sequence addresses the documented case in which Windows Update installs or reverts a display driver while the vendor package is being applied.
Do not interpret a replacement by Windows Update as proof that the vendor package is incompatible. For NVIDIA, first allow the background transaction to finish and then use the Custom clean-install path. For AMD Error 205, the documented meaning is specifically that Windows Update reverted the driver, so the offline cleanup/install sequence is appropriate.

When to stop reinstalling
Move beyond driver changes when the display fails before Windows loads, the card repeatedly returns Code 43 after a controlled installation, crashes continue with stock settings, or Windows records WHEA events and random reboots. At that point, isolate the hardware path: test without the riser, verify independent power cabling, confirm the supply’s capacity, reseat the card, and compare behavior with a known-good display path or another system when available. A persistent failure after those checks may require professional hardware diagnosis or replacement, but the software evidence should be documented first.
