Fix NPCTalk in this order: verify its voice and language services outside GTA V, confirm every Windows and mod prerequisite, then troubleshoot microphone input. Running npctalk health and npctalk say before launching the game separates a service failure from a GTA V, Script Hook, or audio-device problem.
NPCTalk is intended for GTA V Story Mode. It captures speech, converts it to text, sends the conversation to an LLM, streams a generated NPC voice, and can trigger actions. Never start GTA Online with a script hook installed; Online voice-chat problems must be handled as Rockstar account, platform, or privacy-setting issues instead.
Use the three-stage diagnostic order
Most apparent “microphone problems” are actually service, dependency, or game-hook failures. Testing in the order below prevents you from changing Windows audio settings when the voice server is not running.

- Prove the services. Start NPCTalk’s voice server outside GTA V. Run
npctalk health, thennpctalk say. A healthy result and audible generated speech establish that the text-to-speech and related service path works before the game is involved. - Check prerequisites and dependencies. Confirm Windows, GTA V, .NET SDK 8 or newer, Python 3.10 or newer,
uv, Git, and ffmpeg. The GTA V integration also depends on a current Script Hook V and ScriptHookVDotNet 3 compatible with your installed GTA V build. - Debug the microphone last. Set the intended microphone as the default Windows recording device, grant microphone permission, and test push-to-talk before enabling open mic.
This sequence mirrors NPCTalk’s own build loop: make the voice server work, get one NPC answering typed text, then add push-to-talk or open-microphone input.

What NPCTalk is doing when an NPC answers
The project describes its goal as “Make any NPC in any game talk back, with Fish Audio voices.” In the GTA V example, the path is a chain rather than a single voice-chat feature:
- Your microphone supplies player speech.
- Speech-to-text produces a transcript.
- The transcript and conversation context go to an LLM that decides what the NPC should say or do.
- A voice provider generates or streams the NPC response, potentially using a cloned voice.
- The game integration plays the result and may trigger an action.
A failure at any stage can look like the same symptom: silence. For example, a working Windows microphone proves only that Windows can record; it does not prove that NPCTalk has permission, that its push-to-talk binding is correct, or that the speech, LLM, and voice services accepted the request.
Prerequisites to verify before opening GTA V
Operating system and developer tools
- Windows
- GTA V installed and able to launch Story Mode normally
- .NET SDK 8 or newer
- Python 3.10 or newer
uvfor the project’s Python environment and commands- Git
- ffmpeg available to the application
Use the versions required by the current NPCTalk example rather than assuming an older installation is sufficient. A missing executable, an incompatible runtime, or a command that resolves to a different version can stop the pipeline before a microphone is ever queried.

Install Script Hook V and ScriptHookVDotNet 3 versions that support your current GTA V build. Script Hook is the bridge that lets a script run inside the game; ScriptHookVDotNet supplies the .NET scripting layer used by many GTA V mods. If either component is missing or too old, NPCTalk may produce no controls, fail during loading, or show a red script error.
Credentials and service access
NPCTalk’s documented service stack includes Modal, fal, Cerebras, TypeSafe, and Fish Audio components. Your current example files determine which credentials are required and how they are named. Treat each key as a separate dependency: a valid speech key does not authorize the LLM, and an LLM key does not authorize voice generation.
Keep keys in the exact environment-file format expected by the project. Do not add spaces around an equals sign unless the example explicitly shows them, and check that the account has permission for the selected model or voice. A malformed key can allow the game to load while every NPC request fails later.

Stage one: test NPCTalk without GTA V
Run the health check
- Open a terminal in the NPCTalk project environment.
- Start the voice server using the project’s documented command.
- Run
npctalk health. - Read the result for failed providers, missing credentials, unreachable endpoints, or environment errors.
Do not proceed to in-game testing until the health check is clean or you understand which optional component is not being exercised.

- With the server still running, execute
npctalk say. - Confirm that audio is generated and can be played by Windows.
- If it fails, inspect the terminal output and correct the provider, model, credential, or ffmpeg problem first.
This test bypasses GTA V, Script Hook, key bindings, and microphone capture. If it cannot produce audio, reinstalling a mod file or changing a push-to-talk key will not fix the root cause.
Move to typed NPC input
The recommended progression is one NPC answering typed text before adding live speech. Typed input tests the LLM prompt, character context, provider permissions, and playback path without introducing transcription errors. Once typed replies work, add push-to-talk, then consider open mic.
Stage two: confirm the mod loads in Story Mode
Recognize a Script Hook failure
“No controls,” an immediate red script error, or a mod that never responds at game load usually points to Script Hook V or ScriptHookVDotNet rather than audio. Check that:
- The files are in the expected GTA V installation directory.
- Both components support the exact GTA V build installed after the most recent update.
- There is not an older copy earlier in the load path.
- The mod log records a successful startup rather than an assembly-load or compatibility error.
After a GTA V update, an older Script Hook is a common cause. Obtain the current compatible release from the Script Hook developer and then retest in Story Mode. Do not attempt to work around a failed hook by launching Online.

Check the game log
Use the NPCTalk or integration log to distinguish startup from request failures. A startup error appears before input is captured; a request error appears only after an NPC interaction. Record the first error, not just the final “no response” message, because later messages are often consequences.

Keep the test scene simple
Use one NPC and typed text first. Temporarily disable unrelated script mods that also intercept input, audio, or key events. Once one NPC reliably answers, re-enable other mods one at a time so a conflict has an identifiable trigger.
Stage three: fix microphone capture
Set the correct Windows recording device
- Open Windows sound settings and select the microphone you actually intend to use.
- Set it as the default recording device.
- Speak and verify that Windows’ input meter moves.
- Disconnect or disable unused microphones temporarily, especially webcam and controller microphones.
The documented requirement is “A working microphone set as your default Windows recording device.” A headset can be audible in games while its microphone remains a secondary or communications-only device, so verify the recording default separately.
Grant microphone permission
- Open Windows Privacy and security settings.
- Open Microphone permissions.
- Enable microphone access for the device and for desktop applications.
- Restart NPCTalk after changing the permission.
If the input meter works in Windows but NPCTalk remains silent, permission or device selection is more likely than a damaged microphone.
Test push-to-talk before open mic
Confirm the mod’s push-to-talk key and press it only after the game has focus. Watch for another mod or overlay using the same key. Push-to-talk gives you a clear start and end to a sample; open mic adds noise-gate, threshold, and background-audio variables and should be enabled only after push-to-talk works.
Check levels and exclusive access
- Raise the microphone input level enough for the Windows meter to respond without clipping.
- Close conferencing, streaming, or recording applications that may hold the device exclusively.
- Use one sample rate and channel configuration consistently in Windows and the audio application.
- Test with a short spoken sentence, not a whisper or music playing through speakers.
These checks establish whether NPCTalk receives a signal. They do not guarantee that speech-to-text will recognize every accent, language, or noisy environment; transcription quality is a separate stage.
Symptom-by-symptom fixes
No mod controls or a red script error appears at load
- Exit GTA V completely.
- Verify Script Hook V and ScriptHookVDotNet 3 versions against the current GTA V build.
- Read the mod log for the first load or assembly error.
- Launch Story Mode with only the required files and test again.
After a game update, update the hook before changing audio settings. A hook incompatibility prevents the script from running, so the microphone cannot be the immediate cause.

The microphone is silent or not detected
- Set a working microphone as the Windows default recording device.
- Enable desktop-app microphone permission.
- Confirm the NPCTalk push-to-talk key and game focus.
- Test push-to-talk with one short sentence before enabling open mic.
- Review the log for an audio-device or permission error.
The NPC hears input but never replies
- Run
npctalk healthoutside the game. - Run
npctalk sayto prove that voice generation works. - Check every API key’s spelling, quoting, and permission.
- Confirm that the selected model or voice is available to the account.
- Inspect logs for rejected requests, provider outages, timeouts, or rate limits.
- Retry with typed text to separate transcription from the response pipeline.
Comparable GTA V voice mods expose the same failure pattern. Hearsay documents checking keys.env spacing, ElevenLabs permissions, and scriptsHearsayhearsay.log. TalkToMeV documents API-key checks, an F10 API test, and rate-limit errors. Those checks are useful models for diagnosis, but NPCTalk’s exact filenames and commands come from its current example files.

- Open the NPCTalk voice and language configuration used by your GTA V example.
- Verify the selected voice ID, language, and model match the provider account.
- Check that the external voice service has permission to use that voice.
- Restart the voice server after editing configuration.
- Run
npctalk sayagain before testing in the game.
Do not assume a character’s in-game name selects a voice automatically. Voice and language are configuration values, and the current example files are authoritative for their names.
Responses stop after several successful exchanges
Look for provider rate limits, expiring credentials, or a service process that exited. Restart the server, run the health check, and retry one short request. If the failure repeats only after a burst of requests, reduce request frequency and verify the account’s quota rather than changing the microphone.
Voice works in Windows but not in NPCTalk
Windows playback proves only that the operating system can output audio. Run npctalk say and verify that the resulting file or stream is routed to the expected playback device. Then test typed NPC input. If typed replies work but live speech fails, focus on microphone permission, default-device selection, and push-to-talk handling; if typed replies fail too, return to service credentials and logs.
GTA V updates, Script Hook versions, and safe recovery
A GTA V update can invalidate Script Hook V even when NPCTalk itself has not changed. The practical recovery sequence is:
- Do not launch GTA Online with any script hook installed.
- Record the GTA V build and the date the failure began.
- Check for a Script Hook V release compatible with that build.
- Update ScriptHookVDotNet 3 if the compatible release requires it.
- Launch Story Mode with the smallest required mod set.
- Run the service health and speech tests again before adding live microphone input.
Keep a known-working copy of your configuration and note which dependency changed. This makes it possible to distinguish a game-update regression from a key, provider, or Windows-audio change.

Story Mode versus GTA Online
NPCTalk’s GTA V example is a Story Mode integration. Script hooks and custom scripts should not be used in GTA Online. If Online voice chat is unavailable, treat it as a Rockstar Online support issue involving platform communication and privacy settings, not as an NPCTalk microphone failure.
Rockstar’s June 17, 2025 guidance specifically addresses Xbox-app-on-PC users and directs them to correct Online Communication and Privacy settings. Those settings are separate from Windows microphone permission and from NPCTalk’s local push-to-talk configuration.
What the published voice-quality figures do—and do not—prove
The NPCTalk repository reports one Lamar-character evaluation with ten test lines and 60 held-out real clips. The figures below are project-reported measurements on the repository’s 2026 current page, not independent benchmarks:

The README notes that one early result did not survive a second run. Treat the numbers as an indication of one project evaluation, not a guarantee for your microphone, PC, character, language, or latency. No independent published statistic establishes NPCTalk failure rates, microphone-model performance, or response latency across PCs.
How NPCTalk compares with other GTA V voice approaches
Comparison is useful when deciding whether a symptom is specific to NPCTalk or common to cloud-assisted NPC voice mods.

All three approaches depend on more than a microphone: game-hook compatibility, provider credentials, permissions, and network services can each stop a reply. NPCTalk’s local health and speech commands provide the cleanest first separation between service and in-game faults.
A repeatable clean-test checklist
- GTA V launches Story Mode without errors.
- Script Hook V and ScriptHookVDotNet 3 match the installed GTA V build.
- .NET SDK 8+, Python 3.10+,
uv, Git, and ffmpeg are installed and resolve correctly. - Provider keys are present, correctly formatted, and authorized.
- The voice server starts outside GTA V.

When to stop troubleshooting and report a bug
Report an NPCTalk issue only after reproducing it with the clean-test sequence. Include the GTA V build, Windows version, NPCTalk commit or release, Script Hook and ScriptHookVDotNet versions, the exact command that failed, and the first relevant log error. Remove API keys and other secrets before sharing logs.
State whether npctalk health, npctalk say, typed NPC input, push-to-talk, and open mic each worked. That sequence lets a maintainer locate the failure at the service, game-hook, microphone, transcription, LLM, or voice-output stage instead of treating every silent NPC as the same bug.
