A CRT shows “no signal” with a Steam Machine because the console outputs digital video through HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4, while a VGA computer CRT expects an analog signal. Use an active DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter or a powered HDMI-to-VGA converter, connect it directly, and select a resolution and refresh rate listed in the CRT’s manual. The Steam Machine’s 1080p default is not guaranteed to be accepted by an older CRT. If the display is a television CRT using a 15 kHz input, you need hardware designed for that scan rate rather than an ordinary VGA adapter.

Why a CRT says “no signal” with a Steam Machine

The Steam Machine’s cited video outputs are HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4. Both carry digital video. A typical computer CRT with a 15-pin VGA connector requires an analog RGB signal, so a cable that merely changes the plug shape cannot complete the connection. The digital signal must be converted before it reaches the monitor.

There is a second possible mismatch: timing. Steam Machine uses 1080p as its default game resolution, according to Valve’s Steam Support information current in 2026. A CRT may not accept that resolution, its refresh rate, or the associated horizontal scan frequency. A monitor can be electrically connected and still display “no signal” when the incoming mode is outside the timings documented for that model.

Valve’s support guidance also says that DisplayPort-to-HDMI connections require an active adapter or cable and that passive adapters and cables are not supported. The same practical principle applies when converting a Steam Machine output to VGA: choose an adapter with an actual conversion circuit and, where specified, its own power source.

First identify which kind of CRT you have

“CRT monitor” can describe two very different displays. Confirm the connector and scan-rate requirements before buying an adapter.

VGA computer CRT

A computer monitor normally has a DE-15 (often called VGA or HD-15) input. It is designed for computer timings, commonly around the 31 kHz horizontal-scan family, but the exact resolutions and refresh rates vary by model. Use the manual or the label near the input as the authority; do not infer a supported mode from the fact that the plug fits.

Television CRT

A television CRT may use SCART, composite, component, or another television input. Many such sets expect a 15 kHz interlaced signal. That is not the same timing used by a VGA computer monitor. An HDMI-to-VGA product can work with a computer CRT yet produce a blank screen on a television CRT because it does not generate 15 kHz output.

For a television CRT, look for a converter or scaler explicitly rated for HDMI-to-15 kHz CRT output, and verify that it supports the exact input connector on the set. A generic HDMI-to-VGA adapter is not a substitute for a 15 kHz scaler or line doubler.

Choose the correct conversion path

CRT and Steam Machine connection Hardware to look for Checks before purchase Do not assume
VGA computer CRT from DisplayPort Active DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter VGA output is explicitly listed; supported resolutions and refresh rates cover a mode in the CRT manual; adapter requirements are clear A passive DisplayPort cable will convert digital video to analog VGA
VGA computer CRT from HDMI Powered HDMI-to-VGA converter It performs digital-to-analog conversion, identifies its power source, and documents output timings Any HDMI-to-VGA cable with matching connectors will work
Television CRT using SCART, composite, or component HDMI-to-15 kHz CRT scaler or another converter explicitly supporting the television timing Exact CRT input, scan rate, interlaced/progressive behavior, and connector wiring A VGA adapter designed for a 31 kHz computer monitor will generate 15 kHz television video
Any CRT through a dock, receiver, switch, soundbar, or capture device First test a direct Steam Machine-to-converter-to-CRT path Each additional device’s supported formats and power state Every device in the chain passes the same timings

For a VGA computer CRT, an active DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter is the primary choice when DisplayPort is available. A powered HDMI-to-VGA converter is the alternative when you use HDMI. “Powered” matters because some converters need USB power to operate reliably; follow the particular unit’s instructions rather than assuming the HDMI port supplies enough power.

Follow this troubleshooting sequence

  1. Select the CRT input. Turn on the CRT and choose the input connected to the converter. If the television or monitor has more than one input, confirm that the on-screen input label matches the physical socket in use.
  2. Restart both devices. Shut down or restart the Steam Machine and power-cycle the CRT. Turn the CRT on before testing the Steam Machine so the display and any identification data are available during startup.
  3. Remove intermediate equipment. Connect the Steam Machine directly to the active converter, then connect the converter directly to the CRT. Temporarily remove docks, AV receivers, HDMI switches, soundbars, capture devices, and other adapters. A direct path makes it possible to identify whether the fault is conversion, timing, cabling, or an intermediate device.
  4. Reseat every connection. Unplug and firmly reconnect the Steam Machine output, the converter, the VGA or television cable, and any USB power lead. Inspect for bent pins, damaged shells, loose screws, or a converter that is receiving no power.
  5. Change one component at a time. Try a known-good cable, another Steam Machine output, or another display. If the Steam Machine works on another display, the console is producing video and attention should move to the converter, CRT compatibility, or selected timing. If another cable fixes the problem, retire the original cable rather than adding more adapters.
  6. Set a supported display mode. In SteamOS Display settings, choose a resolution and refresh rate that the CRT manual lists as supported. Do not treat 1080p as a universal CRT mode: it is the Steam Machine default, not a guarantee that every CRT can synchronize to it.
  7. Recover after a failed mode change. If the CRT worked until a new resolution or refresh rate was selected and then went blank, reconnect a known-good display, open the display settings, and revert to a mode supported by the CRT. Only retry the CRT after confirming the selected mode.

Set resolution and refresh rate in SteamOS

Open the SteamOS Display settings while a working display is connected. The exact wording can vary with the SteamOS build, but the relevant controls are the display’s resolution and refresh rate. Select a mode documented for the CRT rather than choosing the highest available value.

Why the 1080p default can fail

The Steam Machine starts with 1080p as its default game resolution. A CRT may accept lower resolutions but reject 1080p, or it may accept the resolution only at particular refresh rates. When synchronization fails, the monitor often reports “no signal,” “out of range,” or simply remains blank; that message does not prove that the adapter is defective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the CRT’s documented timings

Read the model’s manual or manufacturer label for supported resolutions and refresh rates. Some CRTs accept several modes, while others have a narrow range. Select one of those documented combinations, apply it, and allow the display a few seconds to resynchronize. If the screen remains blank, use the recovery procedure with another display instead of repeatedly cycling unknown modes.

Account for EDID limitations

Modern displays normally provide EDID information describing their capabilities. Some analog converters expose limited or no useful EDID to SteamOS. In that case, SteamOS may offer only generic modes or retain the 1080p default even though the CRT cannot use it. Manually choosing a documented CRT mode is safer than relying on automatic detection.

Understand 31 kHz computer timing versus 15 kHz television timing

Horizontal scan frequency is a key distinction. A computer VGA CRT generally operates in a higher-frequency computer timing family, often around 31 kHz. A standard television CRT commonly expects 15 kHz and may use interlaced fields. These are different signal formats, not interchangeable “VGA resolutions.”

If your CRT has VGA

Use an active digital-to-analog converter and select a mode listed for that monitor. The adapter must support the monitor’s required resolution and refresh rate, and the Steam Machine must be able to output that mode through the selected connector. If a product listing mentions only “VGA output” without specifying supported timings, treat compatibility as unverified.

If your CRT has SCART, composite, or component

Identify whether the input expects 15 kHz RGB, composite video, component video, or another television standard. Choose a scaler that explicitly generates the required timing and signal type. Some products marketed as HDMI-to-VGA cannot produce 15 kHz at all, even if a physical cable or adapter can be attached to the set.

Use a direct, simple signal chain while testing

Every additional box can alter resolution, refresh rate, HDCP behavior, or power availability. Start with the shortest chain: Steam Machine output, active converter, CRT input. Once that works, add a switch or receiver one device at a time and confirm the image after each addition.

Docks and receivers may expose a different EDID profile than the CRT, while soundbars and capture devices can fail to pass an uncommon analog-conversion mode. A switch can also be set to the wrong input or require its own power. Bypassing these devices is not merely a convenience; it separates a display-compatibility problem from a routing problem.

Diagnose the symptom

What you observe Most likely area to check Next action
CRT says no signal immediately and never shows startup video Wrong input, unpowered converter, incompatible passive cable, or a loose connection Select the correct input, verify converter power, reseat both ends, and replace the passive cable with an active converter
Another display works from the Steam Machine, but the CRT does not CRT timing or converter compatibility Read the CRT’s supported modes and select one in SteamOS; verify that the converter supports those timings
Image appears at startup, then disappears after SteamOS loads SteamOS switched to an unsupported resolution or refresh rate Reconnect a known-good display and revert to a CRT-supported mode
Image is stable through HDMI but not through DisplayPort DisplayPort adapter type, adapter power, or a particular output port Use an active DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter, check its power requirements, and test the other output
VGA computer CRT works but television CRT remains blank 15 kHz television timing or wrong television signal type Use a scaler explicitly rated for the television’s scan rate and input
Changing cables or ports changes the result unpredictably Intermittent cable, connector, power, or intermediate device Test one known-good cable and a direct connection, then replace the failing component

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying a passive cable because the connectors match. HDMI, DisplayPort, and VGA carry different signal types. A passive lead does not perform the required digital-to-analog conversion.
  • Assuming every DisplayPort adapter is equivalent. Confirm that the product is active and outputs VGA. A DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter is not automatically a DisplayPort-to-VGA converter.
  • Using a generic HDMI-to-VGA adapter on a 15 kHz television. Many such products target computer monitors and cannot generate television scan rates.
  • Leaving 1080p selected after the CRT goes blank. The default is convenient for modern displays but may be outside the CRT’s accepted timing range.
  • Testing through several devices at once. A dock, switch, receiver, soundbar, or capture device can hide the original fault and provide misleading EDID information.
  • Changing several variables simultaneously. If you change the cable, port, adapter, and resolution together, you cannot tell which change solved or caused the problem.

When the adapter appears to work but the CRT still has no picture

First verify power and input selection, then test the converter with another display if one is available. If the converter works elsewhere, compare that display’s accepted timings with the CRT’s manual. A converter may output a mode that a modern LCD accepts but the CRT rejects.

Check whether the VGA cable is fully seated and secured. Analog VGA connections use separate color and synchronization lines; a damaged pin or poor connection can prevent synchronization even when the converter’s indicator light is on. Replace the cable with a known-good one before concluding that the CRT has failed.

If the CRT has multiple inputs, test the exact input type the converter is designed to drive. A VGA output cannot be connected directly to a composite or SCART input without additional signal conversion. For television CRTs, the scaler must match both the scan rate and the electrical signal format.

When to stop troubleshooting the CRT itself

If the Steam Machine displays correctly on another monitor, a direct active converter is powered, cables are known-good, and a documented CRT mode still produces no picture, the remaining possibilities include an incompatible converter, a failed CRT input, or a CRT that cannot accept the required timing despite a general “VGA” label. At that point, obtain the exact CRT model manual and compare its timing table with the converter’s published output modes. Do not force an unlisted mode or continue connecting equipment that becomes unusually hot, emits a smell, or shows visible damage.

A reliable setup checklist

  • Identify whether the CRT is a VGA computer monitor or a 15 kHz television set.
  • Use an active DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter or a powered HDMI-to-VGA converter for a VGA CRT.
  • For SCART, composite, or component television inputs, use an HDMI-to-15 kHz CRT scaler rated for that exact input.
  • Turn on the CRT and select its connected input before starting the Steam Machine.
  • Connect directly, bypassing docks, switches, receivers, soundbars, and capture devices.
  • Reseat every cable and verify any USB power connection required by the converter.
  • Choose a resolution and refresh rate listed in the CRT manual; do not assume the 1080p default is accepted.
  • If a mode causes a blank screen, reconnect a known-good display and revert to a supported mode.
