If your ROG Xbox Ally charges through its dock but your TV or monitor says “No signal,” the handheld is usually running; the failure is in the USB-C video handshake, dock power, HDMI path or display settings. Work through the checks in order: verify that the dock-to-Ally connection supports DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery, provide adequate USB-C power, test the HDMI path, then restart the Ally without accessories. The ROG Bulwark Dock DG310 uses one USB-C connection for both video and power, has one HDMI 2.1 output, and can drive only one external display at a time.
The procedure below also separates a display-link problem from a console that is genuinely not starting. If the Ally has no indicator, fan or other sign of life, will not start while connected to its charger, or remains faulty after isolation and a forced restart, stop troubleshooting the TV connection and contact ASUS support.
What “no signal” means on an Xbox Ally dock
A docked Ally has two separate jobs: it must charge the handheld and it must negotiate a video signal. Those jobs can fail independently. A dock may power the Ally or its USB accessories while the HDMI output remains blank, so a charging icon is not proof that the video path is working.

The host connection must carry USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode (DP Alt Mode) and USB Power Delivery (USB PD). ASUS describes the DG310 this way: it “works over a single USB-C cable with devices that support USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode and USB Power Delivery.” A charge-only USB-C cable, an incompatible USB-C port or a loose fixed host connector cannot provide dock video.

Black screen versus a dead Ally
| What you observe | Most likely area | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The Ally’s screen, fans or LEDs work, but the TV says “No signal.” | HDMI input, cable, dock power or video negotiation | Confirm the selected HDMI input, reseat every connection and test another cable or display. |
| The Ally charges and USB peripherals work, but no picture appears. | Video negotiation can still be failing independently of charging | Use a known-good, adequately rated USB-C PD charger and repeat the minimal connection sequence. |
| The Ally has no LED, fan or other sign of life. | Battery, power button, charger or internal hardware | Charge it for 15–20 minutes, force-restart it, and escalate if it still will not start. |
| The built-in Ally screen works, but the external display is blank. | Dock, HDMI cable, display input or unsupported display mode | Test another HDMI cable or display and reconnect after Windows has loaded. |
Confirm that your dock and Ally can carry video
Before changing Windows settings, identify the physical path. The DG310 is designed and optimized for ROG Xbox Ally handhelds and uses a fixed 60 cm USB-C host cable. That cable must be firmly seated in the Ally’s USB-C port. A cable intended only for charging or data does not substitute for a DP Alt Mode connection.
The DG310 provides one HDMI 2.1 output and supports one external TV or monitor at a time. Do not expect two screens from its single HDMI connector, and do not troubleshoot a second display until the first one works.
Use the right dock power source
The DG310 can deliver up to 80 W to the Ally, but the dock does not include a charger. ASUS recommends a USB-C PD charger rated at 100 W or higher to reach the dock’s full output. A lower-rated or unsuitable supply may charge slowly or appear to work while leaving too little power for a stable video negotiation.
For diagnosis, use the Ally’s original charger if it is compatible with the dock, or a known-good USB-C PD supply meeting the recommended rating. Connect power to the dock’s USB-C power input rather than trying to power the dock from a peripheral port.

Follow this no-signal troubleshooting sequence
Complete the steps in order. Each step removes one class of failure, so changing several things at once makes the result harder to interpret.
1. Select and test the correct HDMI input
- Use the TV or monitor remote to select the HDMI input number that the dock is physically connected to.
- Confirm that the display is powered on and awake. Some televisions take several seconds to switch inputs or leave standby.
- Disconnect and firmly reconnect the HDMI plug at both the dock and the display. A connector can look inserted while its contacts are not fully engaged.
- If the display has more than one HDMI input, try another input. Test that input with a different known-working source so you know the screen and input are functional.
A picture can fail when the requested resolution or refresh rate exceeds what the HDMI cable or display can handle. This is why testing another cable and another screen is more useful than repeatedly selecting the same input.
2. Inspect the dock-to-Ally USB-C connection
- Disconnect the fixed host cable from the Ally.
- Check the Ally’s USB-C port for lint, debris or visible damage. Do not insert metal objects into the port.
- Reconnect the plug straight and fully. Avoid side pressure on the connector while the Ally is resting in the dock.
- Make sure the dock is not being used through a charge-only adapter, extension or hub between the fixed cable and the Ally.
The same USB-C link carries DP Alt Mode video and USB PD power. If the Ally charges but the cable is not making all required contacts, the dock can still appear partly functional without producing HDMI output.
3. Verify dock power with a suitable PD charger
- Unplug the dock’s power input.
- Connect the original Ally charger or a known-good USB-C PD charger rated at 100 W or more.
- Reconnect the charger to the dock and allow a few seconds for the dock to initialize.
- Leave USB accessories disconnected for now. They can add power demand and extra variables.
The DG310’s 80 W device-output figure is a maximum, not a promise that every charger or Ally configuration will receive 80 W. The dock itself requires an external charger, and the charger’s rating is especially important when the handheld is gaming or the display is requesting a high-bandwidth mode.

4. Remove accessories and restart the Ally
ASUS’s support procedure for a console that will not start or remains black is to remove the dock, USB devices and microSD card, then retry the handheld by itself.
- Shut down Windows normally if the Ally still responds.
- If it is frozen or the screen is black, hold the Power button for 10–15 seconds. This is a forced restart, so unsaved work will be lost.
- Release the button, wait a few seconds and press Power once.
- If the battery may be empty, connect the charger directly and let the Ally charge for 15–20 minutes before trying again.
- Start the Ally undocked, with the dock, USB devices and microSD card removed. Confirm that the built-in display reaches Windows.
This isolation step distinguishes a dead or hung handheld from a dock handshake problem. If the Ally cannot start by itself after charging and the forced restart, the external display is not the primary issue.
5. Reconnect in a minimal order
Once the undocked Ally has reached Windows, reconnect only the components needed for a picture:
- Turn on the TV or monitor and select the HDMI input you intend to use.
- Connect the dock’s USB-C PD power supply.
- Connect HDMI from the dock to the selected display input.
- Wake the display and wait for its input to become active.
- Connect the dock’s fixed USB-C host cable to the Ally.
- Wait for Windows to detect the external display before reconnecting keyboards, storage, Ethernet or other USB devices.
This order is a practical isolation method based on ASUS’s restart and accessory-removal guidance; it is not a guaranteed ASUS-mandated sequence. If video appears, add peripherals one at a time. The item that makes the signal disappear is then a useful suspect.

Check resolution, refresh rate and display capability
The DG310’s published maximums are up to 3840×2160 at 144 Hz or 7680×4320 at 30 Hz, with HDR, variable refresh rate (VRR) and automatic low-latency mode (ALLM). These are capability ceilings, not settings every Ally, HDMI cable or television can use. ASUS states that the actual result depends on the handheld, HDMI cable and display.
When a high-bandwidth mode causes the blank screen
If the picture works at first and disappears after selecting 4K, a high refresh rate, HDR or another advanced mode, return to a conservative mode. Connect the Ally directly to a display if necessary, or use the built-in screen, then choose a resolution and refresh rate that the TV or monitor explicitly supports. Reconnect the dock after Windows is stable.
A certified HDMI 2.1 cable is appropriate when the cable is damaged, unmarked or suspected of limiting bandwidth. It is not a cure for an incompatible USB-C host connection or missing dock power, so replace the cable only after checking those fundamentals.

Use one external display during diagnosis
Disconnect splitters, capture devices, AV receivers and HDMI switches. They add additional handshake points and may not pass the Ally’s selected resolution, HDR, VRR or ALLM signal. Connect the dock directly to one TV or monitor until a stable image is established.

Understand the DG310’s hardware limits
| Feature | DG310 specification | What it means for troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
| External video output | One HDMI 2.1 output | Only one external TV or monitor can be connected at a time. |
| Maximum published modes | Up to 3840×2160 at 144 Hz or 7680×4320 at 30 Hz | The Ally, cable and display may support less; start with a lower mode if negotiation fails. |
| Video features | HDR, VRR and ALLM | Disable or lower an advanced feature temporarily if the screen blanks after changing it. |
| USB expansion | Three USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports | Leave accessories unplugged during initial testing. |
| Networking | Gigabit Ethernet | Ethernet is unrelated to HDMI output; remove it while isolating the fault. |
| Power input | USB-C input up to 100 W | Use a suitable PD charger; the dock does not include one. |
| Host connection | Fixed 60 cm USB-C cable, up to 80 W device output | The fixed cable must be fully connected and the Ally must support DP Alt Mode and USB PD. |
| TV behavior | Automatic TV Game Mode when a ROG Xbox Ally is connected | Game Mode activation does not replace a valid HDMI signal. |
If the Ally works but Windows controls are confusing
A working picture with unusable controls is a different problem from “No signal.” Armoury Crate SE provides Desktop Mode for navigating Windows with the handheld’s controls. If Armoury Crate SE was removed, ASUS documents reinstalling it from its support resources. The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are the supported model families identified in ASUS’s FAQ.
Do not reinstall software as a first response to a blank TV. Software changes cannot repair a disconnected HDMI cable, an underpowered dock or a USB-C connection that lacks DP Alt Mode. Perform the physical and restart checks first, then address control mapping or Armoury Crate SE only after Windows is visible.
Symptoms that point to a particular failure
“The dock charges the Ally, but the TV says no signal”
Charging proves only that some USB PD functions are present. Reseat the host connector, verify that the dock is receiving adequate PD power, remove every USB accessory and test another HDMI cable and display. If the Ally’s built-in screen works, the handheld is not dead; concentrate on the video handshake.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“The TV detects HDMI, then loses the picture”
This usually indicates an unstable handshake or a mode the cable or display cannot sustain. Use a direct HDMI connection, a known-good cable and a lower resolution or refresh rate. Reconnect after Windows has loaded rather than attaching the dock while the Ally is frozen or starting.
“Nothing appears on either the Ally or the TV”
Disconnect the dock and all accessories, charge the Ally directly for 15–20 minutes, hold Power for 10–15 seconds, then press it once. If there is still no LED, fan or other sign of life, follow ASUS’s escalation path instead of continuing to swap HDMI equipment.
“It worked yesterday but not after moving the setup”
Start with the moved components: HDMI input selection, cable seating, dock power and the fixed USB-C plug. A partially inserted connector or a cable damaged during relocation can preserve charging while interrupting video.
When to stop troubleshooting and contact ASUS
Escalate when any of these conditions applies:
- The Ally shows no sign of life after direct charging and a 10–15-second forced restart.
- It will not start even while plugged into a known-good charger.
- The built-in screen remains unusable with the dock and all accessories removed.
- The dock fails with more than one known-good HDMI cable and display after the power and reconnection checks.
- The USB-C port, fixed host cable or dock connector is visibly damaged or becomes unusually hot.
ASUS notes that a persistent no-start condition can involve the battery, power button or motherboard and may require service. Have the Ally model, dock model, charger rating and the tests you completed ready for support. Do not open the dock or handheld while troubleshooting; that can create additional damage and may affect service eligibility.
