If shaking, swinging, or aiming a Joy-Con behaves incorrectly in Nintendo Switch Sports, work through Nintendo’s sequence in order: update the Switch and controller, reset the detached Joy-Con, remove accessories, calibrate it on a stable surface, and test with wireless interference and Bluetooth audio removed. If calibration fails or the same fault appears in every supported motion-control game, the controller needs Nintendo service; replacement hardware is the next step only after that diagnosis.
Start with the symptom, not a replacement
A motion problem can come from software, pairing, an obstruction, radio interference, calibration, or a damaged controller. The fastest route is to identify which of those conditions changes the behavior before spending money.

| What you see | First checks | When to escalate |
|---|---|---|
| Shaking or swinging does not move the character correctly | Install updates, reset the Joy-Con, remove straps and covers, then calibrate | Arrange service if calibration fails or the fault remains in supported motion-control software |
| Motion is inaccurate, drifts, or settles at the wrong angle | Calibrate with the stick facing upward on a flat, stable surface; test without accessories | Service is appropriate if calibration cannot complete or accuracy remains wrong in supported software |
| The Joy-Con disconnects or responds intermittently | Use the SYNC-button reset, move the console away from interference, and temporarily disconnect Bluetooth audio | Service if abnormal wireless behavior continues after those tests |
| Right-side functions fail while other motion works | Remove any cover or grip that could obstruct the right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera | Service if the right Joy-Con still fails supported tests with no obstruction |
Keep notes as you test: whether calibration completes, whether the problem affects one Joy-Con or both, and whether another supported game shows the same behavior. Those observations tell you whether you are fixing a game-specific setup issue or a controller fault.

Nintendo Switch Sports reads movement from the Joy-Con. The game can only respond correctly when the controller firmware and Switch system software are current, the Joy-Con is properly paired, its sensors have a valid reference position, and nothing blocks a sensor. Wireless conditions also matter when the controller is used detached from the console.
#1 Best Overall
- Introducing Joy-Con, controllers that make new kinds of gaming possible, for use with Nintendo Switch.
- The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
- Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
- Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.
Motion support is application-dependent. A controller can appear normal in one title while a different application does not support the same motion feature. Therefore, a failure inside Nintendo Switch Sports is not by itself proof that the Joy-Con hardware is defective. The useful comparison is another application that explicitly supports motion controls.
Prepare a clean test
- Charge the Switch and Joy-Con enough to complete updates and testing without an interruption.
- Detach the Joy-Con you are testing so you can use its SYNC, minus, or plus button and place it on a surface.
- Remove the wrist strap, grip, protective shell, steering-wheel-style accessory, and any other add-on from the controller.
- Clear a flat, stable area where the Joy-Con can rest without being touched during calibration.
- Keep the console positioned where nearby wireless equipment and physical obstacles are minimized.
Do not calibrate while holding the Joy-Con, balancing it on a soft couch, or leaving an accessory attached. Those conditions can change the reference position or interfere with a sensor, making the result look like a software problem.
Follow Nintendo’s troubleshooting sequence
1. Update the Switch system and Joy-Con firmware
Install the latest available Switch system update, then run the console’s controller-firmware update for the Joy-Con. Nintendo places both updates before the other motion-control checks because an outdated system or controller can produce behavior that looks like tracking failure.
After each update completes, restart the normal game test rather than assuming the update changed the controller immediately. If the update cannot finish, solve that update problem first; calibration results made on an outdated setup are not a reliable diagnosis.
2. Reset the detached Joy-Con with its SYNC button
- Detach the affected Joy-Con from the console.
- Press the small SYNC button on the Joy-Con once. This resets its wireless state; it is not a factory reset of the console.
- Press another button on the Joy-Con to power it on and reconnect it.
- Launch Nintendo Switch Sports and repeat the exact movement that previously failed.
Use this sequence for each affected controller separately. If one Joy-Con works after the reset and the other does not, continue the remaining tests on the failing unit instead of treating both controllers as one problem.
3. Remove straps, grips, covers, and other accessories
Test with the Joy-Con completely bare. A wrist strap or grip can change how the controller rests during calibration, while a protective shell can press against controls or cover a sensor. Pay particular attention to the right Joy-Con: a cover that blocks its IR Motion Camera can prevent right-side features from working even when ordinary buttons still respond.
Run the game again after removing each class of accessory. If motion returns, the controller itself may be healthy; reinstall accessories one at a time and stop when the fault reappears. Do not calibrate through the cover and then assume the result applies to the uncovered controller.
4. Confirm that the software supports the motion feature
Check the application’s control information and verify that the movement you are attempting is supported. Nintendo warns that motion-control support varies by application. A test is meaningful only when the software is designed to read that Joy-Con movement.
For a hardware diagnosis, use Nintendo Switch Sports and at least one other supported motion-control application. If the movement fails only in one title, focus on that game’s mode, player setup, or control instructions. If it fails in every supported application, continue to calibration and service checks.
5. Calibrate the motion controls correctly
- From the Switch HOME menu, open System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Calibrate Motion Controls.
- Choose the Joy-Con you are testing and hold its minus or plus button when the calibration screen instructs you to do so.
- Place the Joy-Con on a flat, stable surface with the control stick facing upward. Do not touch, rotate, or lift it while the reference is being captured.
- Wait for the calibration process to finish, then select OK.
- Return to Nintendo Switch Sports and repeat the same movement under the same accessory-free conditions.
The stick-facing-up orientation matters because the console needs a consistent reference position. A tilted or moving controller can produce a completed-looking setup that still reports movement inaccurately. Calibrate each Joy-Con that shows a problem; calibrating one does not repair another.
Calibration has two useful outcomes. A successful calibration followed by normal motion points toward pairing, interference, an accessory, or a game-specific issue. A calibration that cannot complete is itself an escalation condition, especially when the Joy-Con also fails in other supported software.
6. Reduce wireless interference
If the Joy-Con disconnects, lags, or works only intermittently while detached, reposition the console to reduce wireless interference. Move it away from other wireless equipment and avoid placing it where furniture or electronics crowd the connection path.
Temporarily disconnect any Bluetooth audio device and test again. Bluetooth audio can coincide with motion or connection symptoms; removing it is a diagnostic step, not a permanent requirement for using audio. If the controller becomes reliable with Bluetooth audio disconnected, repeat the test in the same location after reconnecting the audio device to confirm whether the combination triggers the fault.
Do not change several wireless conditions at once if you are trying to identify a cause. First test with the console repositioned, then test with Bluetooth audio disconnected, recording which change affects the result.
Use targeted branches for common failures
When shaking or swinging does not move the character
Begin with system and controller updates, then perform the SYNC reset and remove every accessory. Calibrate from the Controllers and Sensors menu with the stick upward and retest the same sports activity. If another supported motion-control application also ignores the movement, the issue is no longer confined to Nintendo Switch Sports; a failed calibration or persistent cross-game failure warrants service.
If the movement works in another supported application but not in one Nintendo Switch Sports activity, verify that the activity actually uses that gesture and that the correct Joy-Con is assigned to the player. The evidence then points to software support or setup rather than a controller that cannot sense motion at all.
When motion is inaccurate or drifts
Remove the strap and cover before calibrating. Put the controller on a rigid, level surface and leave it untouched until the console finishes. A soft or unstable surface can move under the Joy-Con and invalidate the reference. Repeat the test after selecting OK; do not judge calibration while the controller is still being held.
If the calibration screen will not complete, or if drift remains in multiple supported applications after a successful calibration, stop repeating the same procedure and arrange Nintendo service. Recalibration cannot repair an internal sensor that is failing.
When the Joy-Con keeps disconnecting
Use the one-press SYNC reset while the Joy-Con is detached, then wake it with another button. Test with the console in a less crowded wireless position and with Bluetooth audio disconnected. These steps separate a temporary pairing or interference condition from a controller that cannot maintain a connection.

A controller that disconnects only in one location may be reacting to the local wireless environment. One that disconnects across locations and supported software after the reset should be treated as abnormal hardware or wireless behavior and sent for service.
Rank #3
- Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip

- Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
When right-side features do not work
Inspect the right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera area and remove any shell, grip, or other accessory that could cover it. Test the bare controller in the supported feature that previously failed. If ordinary motion returns but the right-side feature does not, keep the accessory removed and proceed through calibration; persistent failure without an obstruction is a reason to request service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Decide whether the fault is the game, the connection, or the controller
Use three comparisons rather than guessing:
- One game versus all supported software: failure in one application suggests a support or in-game setup issue; failure everywhere points toward the controller or connection.
- Calibration succeeds versus fails: a completed calibration allows further connection and interference tests; a calibration failure is a direct service trigger in Nintendo’s guidance.
- Attached versus detached use: behavior that changes only when the Joy-Con is detached makes pairing or wireless conditions more likely than a purely in-game gesture problem.
Record the exact test conditions: controller side, accessory status, Bluetooth-audio status, whether the console was repositioned, calibration result, and the applications tested. Include those details when contacting support so you do not have to repeat every branch from memory.
When Nintendo service is the correct next step
Nintendo’s escalation condition is specific: if motion controls do not respond with any supported software, or if motion-control calibration fails, the non-working Joy-Con controller(s) need service. This applies even if buttons still work or the controller occasionally produces a correct movement.

Service is also reasonable when wireless behavior remains abnormal after the SYNC reset, accessory removal, console repositioning, and Bluetooth-audio test. Those checks remove the common external causes; continuing to retry them will not diagnose an internal fault.
Before sending the controller, write down:
- Whether the left Joy-Con, right Joy-Con, or both are affected.
- Whether the Switch system and controller firmware are current.
- Whether calibration completed and what happened on the calibration screen.
- Which supported applications reproduced the problem.
- Whether removing accessories, moving the console, or disconnecting Bluetooth audio changed it.
Follow Nintendo’s regional service instructions for the console and controller. Availability, eligibility, turnaround, and any charge depend on region and service assessment, so do not assume a particular warranty result or turnaround time.
When replacing a Joy-Con makes sense
A replacement Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controller is a reasonable next step after the update, SYNC reset, accessory-removal, interference, and calibration checks—particularly when Nintendo has diagnosed the unit for service or service is impractical. Replacement should not be the first response to a single-game symptom or an accessory obstruction.
When choosing replacement hardware, verify that it is a genuine Joy-Con intended for Nintendo Switch and that the seller clearly states compatibility and condition. The troubleshooting evidence does not establish a particular listing, price, warranty, or regional availability, so those details must be confirmed at the time of purchase.

If the controller works correctly but frequently needs charging, a charging accessory is a separate convenience decision; it does not address failed motion calibration or a controller that disconnects. Diagnose the motion fault first.
A compact recovery checklist
- Update the Switch system.
- Update Joy-Con firmware.
- Detach the affected controller.
- Press its SYNC button once, then press another button.
- Remove straps, grips, covers, and other accessories.
- Confirm the game and movement support motion controls.
- Open System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Calibrate Motion Controls.
- Hold minus or plus, place the Joy-Con stick-up on a flat, stable surface, wait, and select OK.
- Retest with the console positioned to reduce interference.
- Disconnect Bluetooth audio temporarily if symptoms occur with it connected.
- Test another supported motion-control application.
- Arrange Nintendo service if calibration fails or motion remains unresponsive across supported software; consider replacement only after that diagnosis.
This order prevents the most common mistake: buying another controller before checking firmware, pairing, obstructions, interference, and calibration. It also gives Nintendo support a clear record of what has already been tested.
