If your Nintendo Switch 2 works in handheld mode but the TV says “No Signal,” start with the dock’s power supply and HDMI path. Use the Switch 2 AC adapter (model NGN-01), connect the dock directly to the TV with an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, reset every connection, and test another TV input. The older Switch adapter (HAC-002) can charge a Switch 2 console directly, but it cannot supply enough power for the Switch 2 dock and therefore cannot support TV mode.
Work through the checks below in order. Each test is designed to isolate one part of the setup—power adapter, dock, HDMI cable, TV input, display settings, or console—so you know what to replace or send for service instead of swapping everything at once.
What causes a Switch 2 “No Signal” message?
TV mode requires a complete chain: the console must be seated correctly in the dock, the dock must receive sufficient power, the dock must establish an HDMI connection, and the television must be set to the matching input. A failure anywhere in that chain leaves the TV without a video signal even when the console itself appears normal in handheld mode.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The most common causes are an underpowered or incorrect AC adapter, an HDMI cable or port problem, an intermediate device such as a soundbar or splitter, a console that is not fully seated, excessive heat, or a display setting such as Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). A fault in the dock is also possible. Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance treats the dock, console, cable, TV, and settings as separate items to test.

Use the correct power adapter first
The dock needs more power than the console needs for handheld charging. Nintendo recommends the Switch 2 AC adapter, model NGN-01. If you use another adapter, Nintendo says it must provide at least 54 W for dock operation.
| Adapter | What it can do | TV-mode result |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter NGN-01 | Designed for the Switch 2 dock and console | Use this for normal dock operation |
| Nintendo Switch adapter HAC-002 | Can power or charge a Switch 2 console when plugged directly into the console | Cannot provide enough power through the Switch 2 dock, so it cannot support TV mode |
| Another USB-C power adapter | Compatibility depends on its specifications and approval for your region | Must provide at least 54 W for the dock; lower-output units are not suitable |
Check the model marking on the adapter rather than relying on the plug shape. A USB-C connector that fits the dock does not prove that the adapter can deliver the required power. For a replacement, verify the NGN-01 model, the correct regional plug, and that the seller is offering an authentic Nintendo adapter.
How to test power without guessing
- Disconnect the adapter from the dock and wall outlet.
- Plug the adapter directly into the Switch 2 console.
- Confirm that the console charges and operates normally in handheld mode.
- Unplug it again, connect the adapter directly to the dock, and place the console in the dock.
If the console charges directly but the dock still produces no picture, the adapter may be inadequate for dock use, the dock may be faulty, or the HDMI path may be the problem. If you are using HAC-002, replace it with NGN-01 or another adapter rated for at least 54 W before performing further diagnosis.

Connect the dock directly to the TV
For the first test, remove every device between the dock and television. Use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable from the dock’s HDMI output directly to an HDMI input on the TV. Do not route the signal through a splitter, AV receiver, soundbar, home-theater system, HDMI switch, video adapter, capture device, or other converter.

- Turn the TV on.
- Connect one end of the Ultra High Speed HDMI cable to the dock and the other end to a TV HDMI input.
- Use the TV remote’s Input, Source, or similar control to select the exact HDMI port used.
- Leave all other HDMI equipment disconnected while testing.
Intermediate devices can prevent the dock and TV from completing their HDMI handshake. If the direct connection works, reconnect one device at a time to identify which component or cable interrupts the signal. Keep the direct path as the reference configuration whenever you troubleshoot.
Check the cable and port
Try a different Ultra High Speed HDMI cable if the first one produces no image. Then move the cable to another HDMI input on the same TV and select that input explicitly. A cable can fit securely while its conductors or connectors are damaged, and a TV port can fail independently of the television’s other inputs.
Do not assume that a cable labeled only “HDMI” has the performance or certification needed for this setup. The controlled comparison is another known-good Ultra High Speed cable connected directly from the dock to the TV.

- Turn the television off.
- Remove the console from the dock.
- Disconnect every cable from the dock, including HDMI and the AC adapter.
- Unplug the AC adapter from the wall outlet and from the dock or console.
- Leave the adapter disconnected for at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the adapter directly to the console and confirm handheld charging and operation.
- Disconnect it from the console, connect it directly to the dock, and reconnect the dock’s HDMI cable to the TV.
- Turn the TV on, select the connected HDMI input, and dock the console.
If video returns after this sequence, the original problem was a stale connection or power state rather than a permanent display failure. If the TV remains on “No Signal,” continue with physical seating and substitution tests instead of repeating the reset indefinitely.
Seat the console correctly and check temperature
Place the Switch 2 in the dock facing the same direction as the front of the dock. Remove any protective case or shell before docking; a case can prevent the console’s connector from fully engaging even when the console appears to be in place.
Check that the console and dock are not unusually hot. Move both into an open, ventilated area, keep the vents clear, and do not operate the dock inside a closed cabinet or against heat-producing equipment. Allow hot hardware to cool before testing again. Heat or blocked ventilation can interrupt operation and make diagnosis inconsistent.
What a seating test tells you
- If removing a case restores the picture, the case was preventing a complete dock connection.
- If the picture appears only after the console is repositioned, inspect the dock and console connectors for contamination or physical damage without forcing them together.
- If the dock and console remain cool and correctly seated but there is still no output, move to controlled substitutions.
Use controlled substitutions to isolate the failed part
Change one item at a time and record whether the TV displays the Switch 2 image. This prevents two simultaneous changes from hiding the cause.

- Try another TV input. Keep the same dock and cable, select the new input on the TV, and check for output.
- Try another Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Keep the same TV input and dock so the cable is the only changed variable.
- Try another television. Connect the dock directly to a second TV and select its matching HDMI input.
- Try another Switch 2 dock. Use the same console, power adapter, and direct HDMI method if possible.
Interpret the results rather than treating every failed test as proof of a console fault. A picture on another TV points toward the original TV input, HDMI compatibility, or TV settings. A picture with another cable identifies the original cable as the service item. A picture with another dock makes the first dock the likely source of the failure. If no TV displays an image with a known-good power adapter, direct HDMI cable, and correctly seated console, the fault is more likely in the dock or console and should be escalated.
| Test result | Most useful conclusion | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Works after changing the TV input | The original input selection or port was the issue | Use the working input and have the original port checked if other devices also fail there |
| Works with another HDMI cable | The first cable is suspect | Replace it with an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable |
| Works on another TV | The first TV, its input, or its HDMI settings are involved | Check that TV’s input and display options |
| Works with another dock | The original dock is the likely service item | Prepare the original dock and console for Nintendo service |
| Fails with every tested TV, cable, and dock | A console, dock, or power problem remains | Use Nintendo’s service process for the console and dock |
Review TV and Switch 2 display settings
Once the physical path is known to be correct, review the television’s HDMI settings and the Switch 2 display options. Nintendo specifically advises trying Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) off if there is still no output. VRR changes how the console and TV negotiate refresh timing; disabling it is a diagnostic step, not a claim that VRR is defective in every setup.
- Open the TV’s settings and confirm that the selected HDMI input is enabled and configured for the port in use.
- Temporarily disable any TV-specific HDMI enhancement, compatibility, or refresh-rate option that prevents a standard signal.
- On the Switch 2, turn VRR off and test TV mode again.
- Restore settings one at a time after the picture returns to identify the option that caused the conflict.
Because TV menus differ by manufacturer and model, the exact label may be HDMI Enhanced, Input Signal Plus, Deep Color, or a similar term. Do not change several settings at once; the goal is to identify the single option that affects the signal.

The older Nintendo Switch AC adapter, model HAC-002, is not a replacement for the Switch 2 dock adapter. Nintendo states: “The Nintendo Switch AC adapter (Model HAC-002) can be used to power the Nintendo Switch 2 console when plugged into the console directly, but can not provide enough power to be used with the dock.”

That means HAC-002 may charge the console in handheld mode while the dock remains unable to produce a TV picture. Use NGN-01 for the dock, or an alternative adapter that provides at least 54 W and is appropriate for your region. Do not infer dock compatibility from the fact that the console charges when the adapter is plugged into the console itself.
When the dock needs Nintendo service
If the direct HDMI setup, correct power adapter, complete reset, proper seating, ventilation check, VRR test, and substitution tests do not restore video, stop treating the issue as a cable-selection problem. Nintendo’s support guidance says that persistent loss of video output requires the Switch 2 console and dock to be sent in for service. One Nintendo statement is explicit: “If there’s still no video output on the TV, the dock will need to be sent in for service.”
Before contacting support, note which combinations you tested: adapter model, HDMI cable, TV input, second TV, and (if available) second dock. Include whether the console charges and works handheld. This information helps support distinguish a dock-only fault from a console or power issue.

Nintendo’s cited support pages do not publish a universal repair price or turnaround time for this problem. Any cost or timing depends on the service process, region, warranty status, and inspection, so do not rely on an unofficial estimate.
Preventing another no-signal failure
- Keep the NGN-01 adapter—or a regionally approved alternative rated for at least 54 W—assigned to the dock.
- Run the dock directly to the TV when diagnosing; add splitters, receivers, or soundbars only after a direct connection works.
- Use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and label the working TV input.
- Remove the console case before docking if it interferes with full seating.
- Keep the dock’s vents and surrounding area open, and avoid enclosed cabinets or heat sources.
- Record the working adapter, cable, dock, and TV combination so a future failure can be isolated quickly.
The practical rule is simple: verify dock power first, then establish a direct HDMI path, reset the connection, check seating and heat, and change one test component at a time. If no known-good combination produces video, the appropriate next step is Nintendo service for the console and dock.
