Most stuck Nintendo eShop downloads recover without deleting anything: make sure the Switch is online, close every game or application, open the HOME Menu user page, choose User Settings, select Update Download Progress, and restart the console if the download still does not move. A game that is open, an unstable connection, insufficient space, or the wrong Nintendo Account can each produce a different symptom, so use the matching fix below.
First, identify what the download is doing
The wording on the download screen points to the least disruptive remedy. A paused download is usually waiting for software to close or for the console to refresh its queue. A download that crawls forward needs a connection check. A download that stops with an error needs the code recorded and, if the basic recovery fails, Nintendo’s official support process. A title that disappeared after a console change is an account and virtual-game-card problem rather than a normal network stall.
| Symptom | Most likely area to check | Start with | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Progress is paused or unchanged | A game or other software is running | Close the software, then use Update Download Progress | A restart and reconnect still leave the queue frozen |
| Progress moves very slowly | Wireless connection or range | Run the Switch internet connection test and improve the console’s wireless position | The test reports a problem or repeated retries never improve speed |
| Download fails with an error | Connection, storage, or a title-specific failure | Close software, refresh progress, restart, and check both storage locations | The same error code returns after those checks |
| Purchased software is missing or was deleted | Purchasing account and virtual game card | Sign in with the Nintendo Account that bought the title and set its virtual game card from HOME | The purchasing account is not linked to a user or the title is still unavailable |
| Using a Switch 2 | Model-specific menus and storage standards | Follow the same connection, software-closing, restart, and test sequence | A menu or card requirement differs from the original Switch instructions |
Why a Nintendo Switch download pauses
A running game can deliberately suspend the queue
Nintendo does not treat every pause as a fault. Its support guidance says, “Some games and software will pause downloads when they are being played.” Online features are especially likely to trigger this behavior. If a game is open, the eShop can appear stuck even though the console is operating as designed.

Save your game, return to the HOME Menu, and close the running title before judging the download. Do not keep launching the game to check progress; doing so can keep re-triggering the pause. Once no software that can suspend downloads is active, refresh the queue so the console can request the download again.

A queue refresh is different from starting the game again
Update Download Progress asks the console to reassess the pending download. It is the first recovery action after closing software because it does not require changing storage or removing the title. If the progress indicator begins moving shortly after the console reconnects online, the earlier pause was likely caused by software activity or a stale queue state.
Step-by-step recovery for a paused or frozen download
- Confirm that the Switch is connected. Check that the console has an active internet connection rather than assuming the wireless network is still available. If other devices recently lost service or the Switch was moved, treat connectivity as unconfirmed.
- Close every game or application. From the HOME Menu, highlight the running software, open its options, and close it using the console’s normal close command. The important result is that no software capable of pausing downloads remains open.
- Refresh the download. Open the HOME Menu user page, choose User Settings, and select Update Download Progress. Watch the queue for a short period after the refresh rather than immediately opening another game.
- Restart if the indicator still does not move. Restart the console, allow it to reconnect to the internet, and then check the download again. Reconnecting before retrying matters: a restart that has not regained network access cannot resume an eShop transfer.
- Use the connection test for a slow result. If the download has resumed but advances very slowly, run the Switch’s built-in internet connection test. A slow transfer calls for network troubleshooting rather than repeated queue refreshes.
Nintendo describes the expected behavior this way: “Shortly after connecting online, the download should start to progress as long as you have not started any software that may pause the download.” That expectation gives you a useful checkpoint after the restart: leave software closed, let the console reconnect, and see whether progress begins.
What to do when the download is slow
Run the Switch internet connection test
A download that increases by small amounts is not the same as one that is completely paused. Use the console’s internet connection test to separate a transfer-rate problem from an eShop queue problem. The test can reveal that the Switch is connected but experiencing poor network conditions; in that case, repeatedly selecting Update Download Progress will not improve the underlying connection.

Improve wireless conditions
Keep the console within reliable wireless range, especially when you expect the download to continue in sleep mode. Walls, distance, and a weak signal can make a transfer appear to stall intermittently. Move the console to a location where its wireless connection is dependable, then run the connection test again before retrying the download.
No official source in the available guidance establishes an average eShop download time or a guaranteed speed. Do not use a percentage or a fixed number of minutes as a success test. The practical test is whether the progress value continues to increase after the connection is stable and software remains closed.
Check storage in both places
System memory and the inserted card are separate checks
Open the Switch’s storage information and check available space in system memory and on the inserted microSD or microSD Express card. A console can have room in one location while the other is full, so checking only internal memory can miss the reason a download cannot finish.
Rank #3
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Nintendo states that downloads in sleep mode require both an internet connection and sufficient space on either storage location. A space-related pause therefore cannot be fixed by changing wireless settings alone. Free the required space in the location the title is using, or use a compatible card with enough capacity. A compatible microSD card is the most direct physical accessory for a storage-related stall, but compatibility must be checked for the specific console generation before purchase.
Use storage evidence before making a destructive change
Record which location is full before deleting or moving anything. Storage changes are more disruptive than closing software or restarting, so they belong later in the recovery order. If both locations have adequate free space and the connection test is healthy, storage is less likely to explain the pause; return to the queue refresh and restart steps instead of repeatedly changing files.
Downloading while the Switch is in sleep mode
Yes, a Nintendo Switch can continue an eShop download in sleep mode when the required conditions are met. Nintendo’s guidance ties sleep-mode downloading to two requirements: an active internet connection and sufficient available space on system memory or the inserted card.

- Leave the console where its wireless connection is reliable.
- Confirm free space in both system memory and the inserted microSD or microSD Express card.
- Close software that can pause downloads before putting the console to sleep.
- After waking the console, check whether the progress value has advanced instead of assuming that sleep mode guarantees completion.
If the download is still slow after waking, run the internet connection test. Sleep mode cannot overcome a weak wireless signal or a full destination.
Redownload a purchase that is missing after a console change
A deleted title or software that is not appearing after moving to another console requires the Nintendo Account that made the purchase. Nintendo says that purchasing account must be linked to the user for redownload.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- On the console, select the user linked to the Nintendo Account that originally purchased the software.
- From the HOME Menu, locate the title’s virtual game card.
- Set that title’s virtual game card for the console, then begin the redownload from the account’s available software.
- If the title is still absent, verify that the user is linked to the purchasing account rather than a different family or local user.
This account check is separate from a slow transfer. Changing wireless position will not restore a purchase that the active user does not own, and refreshing a queue will not substitute for the purchasing account’s virtual game card.

When an eShop download fails with an error code
Complete the reversible checks first
Before seeking support, perform the actions that do not alter your stored software: close running software, select Update Download Progress, restart and reconnect, run the internet connection test if the transfer is slow, and verify free space in system memory and the inserted card. These checks cover the documented causes without assuming what an unfamiliar error code means.
Record the exact code and wording
If the same failure returns, write down the complete error code and the point at which it appears. “Download failed” and a numeric code are not interchangeable clues. Avoid guessing at a fix based on a code from a different Nintendo product or console generation. Use Nintendo Support’s official error-code help with the exact code, console model, and the steps already attempted.
Persistent error-code failures belong at the official support stage rather than in an endless cycle of restarts. The support path can distinguish an account issue, a service issue, a storage requirement, or a model-specific condition that the general recovery flow cannot identify.

Switch 2: what carries over and what must be checked
Nintendo publishes separate Switch 2 guidance with the same core recovery flow: confirm connectivity, close software that can pause downloads, restart, and test the connection when progress is slow. Those shared steps are safe starting points, but they do not make every menu label or storage accessory interchangeable.
- Use the menu labels shown on the Switch 2 itself if they differ from the original Switch path.
- Check the card standard and compatibility requirements for Switch 2 before treating an existing card as a storage solution.
- Do not infer that an original-Switch storage instruction applies unchanged to Switch 2 hardware.
- When contacting support, identify the console generation so the instructions and error-code guidance match the device.
A decision path that avoids unnecessary changes
- Paused with a game open: close the game, refresh download progress, and observe the queue.
- Paused with no software open: restart, let the console reconnect, and check progress again.
- Moving slowly: run the internet connection test and improve wireless range; then retry.
- Stops because storage is unavailable: inspect system memory and the inserted card, then provide adequate compatible space.
- Title is missing after deletion or a console move: use the purchasing Nintendo Account and set the title’s virtual game card.
- An error code returns after these checks: keep the exact code and use Nintendo’s official support route.
This order starts with reversible actions and reserves storage changes and support escalation for cases where the simpler explanations have been ruled out.
Quick Recap
Before you retry: a short prevention checklist
- Close software before starting a large eShop download, particularly a game with online features.
- Keep the console within reliable wireless range when downloading in sleep mode.
- Check free space in system memory and on the inserted microSD or microSD Express card rather than checking only one.
- Keep the purchasing Nintendo Account linked to the user who needs to redownload a purchased title.
- For Switch 2, verify model-specific menu instructions and card standards before using hardware advice written for the original Switch.
- When a failure persists, save the exact error code and wording for Nintendo Support.
