If Nekome: Nazi Hunter crashes while you play Hans the Handsome, opens to a black screen, or ignores your controller, start with reversible Steam and display checks. Steam Support’s overlay, configuration, and conflict-removal steps are the only documented platform procedures that directly match these symptoms. There is no authoritative developer note identifying a Hans-specific crash fix, so treat driver changes, file verification, save resets, and configuration edits as unconfirmed escalation rather than guaranteed remedies.
First establish which build you are using. SteamDB lists the main game as a prerelease, single-player, third-person action title with a Q1 2027 release window. The separate Nekome: Nazi Hunter Demo is Windows App 4859720 and is recorded with a 2026-10-19 release date. Instructions and results can differ between that standalone demo and a later full-game build.
Identify the build before changing anything
Open Steam Library, select the entry you launched, and check its exact name. The demo is a separate app, not merely a menu inside the unreleased full game. Record the app name, Steam app ID if shown in support information, Windows version, graphics card and driver version, controller model and connection type, and the point at which the problem occurs. A useful report says, for example, “Windows demo App 4859720, crash occurs when Hans the Handsome appears,” rather than simply “the game crashes.”

The full-game compatibility information is associated with Steam App ID 4200110 in PCGamingWiki. That page records controller remapping information and a Proton compatibility path, but neither entry is a promise that every controller or Linux setup works. SteamDB’s current metadata says the game has full controller support and lists DualShock and DualSense categories; it does not provide a model-by-model compatibility guarantee.

Fix crashes during Hans the Handsome
1. Reproduce the failure without extra overlays
Exit the game and close software that injects an overlay, captures the screen, remaps input, monitors hardware, or synchronizes files. Steam Support specifically lists Razer Synapse, XInput emulators, Fraps, Skype or Skypehost, MSI Afterburner, ASUS AI Suite, and ZoneAlarm as examples of programs that can conflict with Steam games. The list is not a Nekome patch note and does not prove that any one program is responsible; it is a practical isolation test.
After closing those utilities, launch the same Steam entry again and perform the smallest action that reaches the Hans sequence. If the crash disappears, reopen utilities one at a time until the conflict is reproducible. If it remains, do not repeatedly reload a damaged-looking save: note whether every save fails, whether a new game reaches the same scene, and whether the demo or full build is involved.
2. Keep the Steam launch path consistent
Start the game from its Steam Library page rather than a desktop executable or a third-party launcher shortcut. This keeps Steam’s overlay and input layer in the same state for each test. Restart Steam completely before the next attempt, not just the game window. A restart clears a stuck overlay or input process without altering game files.

A search of available authoritative material found no developer article, patch note, or support thread that names “Hans the Handsome” and prescribes a crash or black-screen remedy. Consequently, a graphics-driver update, Steam file verification, save reset, or configuration edit may be a reasonable general PC escalation, but none is a confirmed Hans fix. Try such measures only after the low-risk Steam checks, document exactly what changed, and make a backup of saves before deleting or replacing anything.

4. Capture evidence for an actionable report
Write down the demo or full-game identity, app ID when known, Windows version, GPU and driver version, display mode, connected input devices, the last on-screen action, and whether overlays were disabled. Include the time of the crash and whether a new game reproduces it. Preserve crash dialogs, screenshots, and log files if the developer requests them. A concise, repeatable sequence is more useful than a claim that the game “randomly” fails.
Resolve a black screen
Close known conflict software first
Steam Support identifies MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics, Razer Synapse, ASUS AI Suite, ZoneAlarm, Skype or Skypehost, cloud-sync services such as MEGASync, and screen-capture software such as Fraps as possible causes of display or overlay conflicts. Exit them fully, including their notification-area processes, then start Nekome through Steam. If the black screen is gone, restore programs individually to identify the conflict instead of re-enabling everything at once.
Switch from fullscreen to windowed mode
If you can reach the game menu, open its display or graphics settings and change the display mode from fullscreen to windowed. This is the specific mode change recommended by Steam Support for a black screen. Apply the setting, restart the game, and test the same scene. Windowed mode is a diagnostic step; once the game is stable, you can try borderless or fullscreen again, one change at a time.
When no menu is visible
Do not assume that a black screen proves a corrupted save or a missing game file. Close the process, disable the listed overlays and capture tools, restart Steam, and try again. Record whether you hear menu audio, whether the window responds, and whether the symptom occurs only after loading a particular save. Those distinctions tell the developer whether the failure is likely tied to rendering, an injected overlay, or a scene transition, while avoiding an irreversible reset.

Get a controller working
Steam Support states: “The Steam Overlay is vital to Steam Controller functionality.” Follow the checks in this order so that each test changes only one part of the input path.
1. Confirm the overlay appears
- Launch Nekome from Steam.
- Use Steam’s in-game overlay shortcut (the default is Shift+Tab unless you changed it).
- Confirm that the overlay opens over the game. If it does not, open Steam’s Settings, go to the In Game section, and enable the Steam Overlay option, then restart Steam and retest.
If the overlay cannot appear, controller mappings that depend on Steam Input may not reach the game. Treat that as a Steam configuration problem first, not proof that the controller model is unsupported.
2. Calibrate in Big Picture Mode
- Open Steam in Big Picture Mode.
- Open the controller settings area and select the connected controller.
- Run the available calibration procedure, following the on-screen prompts for sticks, triggers, and other axes.
- Return to the game and test movement, camera control, and one button at a time.
Calibration can correct an axis that is permanently off-center or a trigger that never reaches its full range. It cannot repair a cable, Bluetooth connection, or hardware failure, so note whether the pad works in another Steam game.

From the game’s controller layout screen, choose a different community or official layout, or switch between a Steam Input layout and the game’s native layout when those choices are offered. Test after each change. Keep a note of the layout that works so you can restore it after troubleshooting.

4. Restart Steam and remove competing devices
- Exit Steam completely and start it again.
- Unplug other controllers, steering wheels, flight sticks, drawing tablets, virtual gamepads, and unused USB input devices.
- Reconnect only the controller you are testing.
- Launch Nekome and test the same controls.
Multiple XInput devices can change player order or cause a game to read the wrong device. Removing extras is a reversible way to isolate that condition.
5. Disable conflicting programs and external launcher overlays
Steam Support names XInput emulators, Razer Synapse, Fraps, Skype or Skypehost, MSI Afterburner, ASUS AI Suite, and ZoneAlarm as examples of conflicts. Disable those programs temporarily, along with overlays supplied by any external launcher, then restart Steam. Because the examples come from platform support rather than a Nekome-specific report, re-enable them one at a time after testing.
6. Match the test to your controller type
SteamDB lists full controller support and DualShock/DualSense categories for Nekome, but that metadata does not establish compatibility for every third-party pad. Record whether your controller is an XInput-style device, a DualShock, a DualSense, or another model, and whether it is connected by USB or Bluetooth. Avoid buying a named controller or accessory solely on the basis of the category listing; no model-specific compatibility table is published.
7. Consider remapping and Proton only when they apply
PCGamingWiki records controller remapping information and a Proton compatibility path for Steam App ID 4200110. Those notes are relevant to a Linux user running the full-game app through Proton, not proof that the Windows demo has identical behavior. If you are using Proton, report the Proton version, Steam Input state, and whether the controller works in another Proton title. If you are on Windows, keep the report focused on the Windows build and its input path.

When to stop troubleshooting and report the fault
Stop repeating the same launch attempt when the result is unchanged after the overlay, conflict, display, and controller checks. Prepare a report that identifies the exact Steam entry, distinguishes Demo App 4859720 from the prerelease full game, and states whether the symptom is a Hans-scene crash, a black screen before the menu, or a controller-input failure. Include hardware and software details, the steps that reproduce the problem, and which listed conflict programs were closed.
For a crash, say whether a new game and an existing save behave differently. For a black screen, state whether audio plays and whether windowed mode changes anything. For a controller issue, state whether the overlay appears, whether calibration completes, which layout was tested, and whether other devices were unplugged. Attach logs or crash reports when the developer’s support channel requests them, but do not publish personal data contained in those files.
What the current release information means
As of the SteamDB entries dated 2026, the main title is still listed for Q1 2027, while the free Windows demo has a 2026-10-19 release date. A fix that works in the demo may not carry over to a later full-game build, and a future patch can change menu labels or controller behavior. Include the build date and app identity in every follow-up so a support response can target the correct executable.
