If GTA Online cannot join friends, matchmaking fails, or reports a Strict NAT, work through the connection path in order: check Rockstar’s service status, restart the game and network, test NAT and speed, try Ethernet, enable UPnP, then review ports, DNS and firewall rules. Change one setting at a time so you know which fix worked.
What NAT and matchmaking errors mean
Network address translation (NAT) controls how your console or PC establishes connections with other players through the router. A restrictive NAT can prevent the session negotiation GTA Online uses for invites, lobbies and peer connections, even when web browsing and other games work.
Rockstar describes the practical effect this way: “A more open NAT Type will have fewer conflicts with other player systems and encounter less connectivity issues with other players.” The exact label depends on the platform. Rockstar’s PC guidance uses Open, Moderate and Strict:

PlayStation and Xbox display their own NAT terminology and test results. Do not assume that a label on one platform maps perfectly to a label on another; use the platform’s built-in test and observe whether multiplayer connections succeed.

Symptoms that point to NAT or routing
- You can sign in to Rockstar services but cannot join a friend’s session.
- Invites time out, lobbies empty unexpectedly, or matchmaking repeatedly returns you to single-player mode.
- The game reports a Strict or otherwise restricted NAT.
- The same account works on a different internet connection but not at home.
A complete service outage can produce similar messages, so rule that out before changing router settings.
Use this troubleshooting order
1. Check Rockstar service status first
Open Rockstar’s official Service Status page and check GTA Online, authentication and the platform services you use. Scheduled maintenance or an outage can cause connection errors that no local change will fix. If a component is degraded, wait for it to recover and retest before editing your router.
2. Restart every part of the connection path
- Quit GTA Online completely rather than leaving it suspended.
- Restart the PlayStation, Xbox or PC.
- Unplug the router’s power for about 60 seconds, reconnect it and wait until its internet indicators stabilize.
- Start the game again and test joining a friend.
Rockstar’s platform guides specifically recommend resetting the router. This clears stale translations and temporary routing failures without changing permanent settings.

Run the built-in network test before and after every change. Record the NAT result, download speed, upload speed and any multiplayer warning. A result that changes after a router restart is useful evidence; a result that remains restricted points toward router, ISP or upstream NAT controls.

Rockstar’s 2024/2025 PlayStation and Xbox troubleshooting guidance lists 7.5 Mbps download, 1 Mbps recommended upload and 0.5 Mbps minimum upload. These are troubleshooting targets, not a guarantee that matchmaking will work. Latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference and NAT can still prevent a session at those speeds.
4. Try a wired Ethernet connection
Connect the console or PC directly to the router with Ethernet and repeat the test. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is suitable for this diagnostic step. Wired networking can remove Wi-Fi interference, roaming and signal dropouts, but it does not by itself convert Strict NAT to Open NAT. If Ethernet fixes the problem while Wi-Fi does not, improve wireless placement or configuration after you have confirmed that NAT is not the remaining issue.
5. Enable UPnP on the router
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) allows the game and platform services to request the temporary mappings they need. Rockstar’s PC guidance recommends enabling UPnP, and its console guides also direct players to check it.

- Sign in to the router’s administration page using the address and credentials supplied by the router manufacturer or ISP.
- Look under sections named Advanced network, NAT, Firewall or LAN for a UPnP switch.
- Enable UPnP, save the setting and restart the router.
- Run the platform NAT test, launch GTA Online and test an invite.
Router menus differ, and some ISP-managed devices hide UPnP. Do not enable UPnP on an unknown public network. If several routers are chained, enabling UPnP on only the inner router may not help because the outer device still performs NAT.

6. Verify GTA Online ports only after simpler fixes
Rockstar lists these GTA Online UDP ports in its PlayStation and Xbox troubleshooting pages:

Platform network ports are additional and differ by device. Use the current Rockstar support page for your exact platform instead of copying an old forum list. A port-forwarding rule must point to the correct local IP address of the console or PC; forwarding to another device has no effect.
- Give the gaming device a DHCP reservation in the router so its local IP does not change.
- Create rules for the UDP ports Rockstar lists, selecting the device’s reserved IP as the destination.
- Save, reboot the router and rerun the NAT test.
- Test GTA Online with a friend before adding any further rules.
Manual forwarding is more technical and affects the network beyond one game. Never forward random ports, duplicate conflicting rules or expose the router’s administration interface to the internet. If UPnP works, it is usually preferable to maintaining static rules.

7. Review DNS and firewall settings one change at a time
Rockstar’s console guides include DNS troubleshooting steps. If you change DNS, write down the original setting first, apply the new setting, restart the connection and test. DNS can affect name resolution and service discovery, but it cannot overcome an ISP-level NAT restriction.

On PC, check both the router firewall and the computer firewall. Allow the Rockstar Games Launcher and the GTA V executable through the firewall on the networks you actually use. Create narrow application or port exceptions rather than disabling the firewall globally. If a security product has its own network filter, temporarily pause only that filter for a controlled test, then restore protection immediately.
8. Test a different internet connection
Rockstar recommends trying another connection, such as a mobile hotspot, when the service is unavailable on PC. Connect the same console or PC to the hotspot, sign in and attempt a short GTA Online session.
- Works on the hotspot: the home router, ISP path, double-NAT arrangement or ISP policy is the likely cause.
- Fails on both connections: check Rockstar service status, platform services, account sign-in and local firewall or game installation issues.
A hotspot is a diagnostic test, not necessarily a practical long-term gaming connection; mobile data may have latency, data-cap or carrier-NAT limitations.

PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
- Open Settings and the platform’s Network section.
- Run Test Internet Connection and note the NAT result, download speed and upload speed.
- Confirm the console is connected to the intended router, then repeat the test over Ethernet.
- Check UPnP in the router and apply the restart sequence.
- If you use manual forwarding, reserve the console’s local IP and apply only the UDP ports Rockstar lists for GTA Online, then retest.
If the console reports a restricted NAT after UPnP and correct forwarding, inspect whether another modem, mesh node or gateway is also routing traffic. Ask the ISP whether the connection uses carrier-grade NAT; an ISP-controlled address space may prevent unsolicited inbound mappings that port forwarding requires.

Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One
- Open Settings, choose General, then Network settings.
- Run Test NAT type and Test multiplayer connection.
- Restart the console and router, then test again over Ethernet.
- Check UPnP on the router. If the Xbox reports a restricted or unavailable NAT, look for a second router or gateway performing NAT.
- Use Rockstar’s current Xbox guidance for platform-specific network ports in addition to the GTA Online UDP ports.
Do not rely on a single “Open” result if invites still fail. Test with more than one friend, because the other player’s NAT can also prevent a peer connection.
PC
- Exit GTA V and the Rockstar Games Launcher, then restart Windows and the router.
- Run the launcher and game on a trusted network profile.
- Check the router’s NAT and UPnP settings.
- In Windows Security, open Firewall & network protection, then Allow an app through firewall. Permit the Rockstar Games Launcher and GTA V on the appropriate private network.
- Check third-party antivirus or firewall software for a separate blocked application rule.
- Use the launcher’s connection again, then test an invite and a public session.
Rockstar’s PC definitions are Open, Moderate and Strict: Open can connect with any NAT type, Moderate with Open or Moderate, and Strict only with Open. If the PC works on a hotspot but not at home, focus on the home router or ISP rather than reinstalling the game.

Diagnose the result instead of guessing

Common mistakes that make the problem worse
- Changing several settings at once: you lose the ability to identify the effective fix and may create conflicting rules.
- Copying an old port list: platform requirements and router firmware change. Use Rockstar’s current page for the exact device.
- Assuming faster internet fixes NAT: the quoted speed targets do not guarantee matchmaking, and bandwidth does not remove restrictive translation.
- Disabling every firewall: this removes protection without proving which application or port was blocked. Use a specific exception.
- Forwarding ports to a changing address: a DHCP reassignment can silently make a previously working rule point to the wrong device.
- Ignoring the other player’s NAT: your Open result cannot make a friend’s Strict connection accept every session.
- Testing only one game mode: compare joining a friend, accepting an invite and entering a public session to determine whether the failure is specific to matchmaking or all online traffic.
When to contact the ISP or Rockstar
Contact the ISP when the same device succeeds on a hotspot but fails on the home connection, when the modem and router both perform NAT, or when the provider confirms carrier-grade NAT. Ask whether the gateway can be placed in bridge or passthrough mode, whether a public IPv4 address is available, and whether inbound gaming traffic is filtered. The exact options and fees are provider-specific.
Contact Rockstar Support after checking service status, restarting the path, testing NAT and another connection, and confirming that the launcher or console can authenticate. Include your platform, NAT result, whether Ethernet changes the result, whether a hotspot works, and the exact error text. Those details are more useful than simply reporting that matchmaking “doesn’t work.”
A final repeatable checklist
- Check Rockstar service status.
- Quit GTA Online, restart the device and power-cycle the router.
- Run the platform network test and record NAT and speed results.
- Try Ethernet.
- Enable UPnP, restart the router and retest.
- Use only the current platform port guidance if forwarding is still necessary.
- Review DNS and narrowly scoped firewall exceptions.
- Try a mobile hotspot or other connection to isolate the home network.
- Escalate to the ISP for double NAT or carrier-grade NAT, or to Rockstar with your recorded results.
This sequence moves from reversible, low-risk checks to configuration changes that affect the wider network. It also distinguishes a GTA Online service incident from a local Wi-Fi problem, router NAT restriction, firewall block or ISP limitation.
