If your Hercules DJControl Inpulse appears to play but you hear nothing, first identify where audio is supposed to leave the system. In Serato DJ Lite, the controller’s built-in audio interface normally sends sound to speakers connected to its rear outputs and to headphones connected to its front jack. In DJUCED, you can instead enable SEND THE MASTER TO THE SPEAKERS to use the laptop’s speakers. Selecting the wrong path, leaving a channel control closed, using the wrong cable, or connecting through an unreliable USB setup accounts for most silent, distorted, or intermittent output.
Work through the checks below in order. Start with the software routing and physical connections before changing drivers or performance settings; that prevents you from masking a simple output-selection problem with more complicated changes.
1. Choose the audio path you actually want
The Inpulse is an audio interface as well as a control surface. Your software can send the master mix through that interface, or (in supported configurations) through the computer’s internal sound card. Decide which destination you are testing before changing knobs or reinstalling anything. A moving waveform only proves that the software is decoding the track; it does not prove that the selected output, cable, or speaker is receiving it.
Serato DJ Lite or Pro: use the controller outputs
The Hercules DJControl Inpulse 500 manual states: “The controller has been designed to play music via its built-in audio interface, and not via a laptop computer’s speakers.” Connect powered speakers to the controller’s rear outputs and headphones to its front headphone output. If Serato’s decks show a moving waveform but the laptop remains silent, that behavior is usually expected rather than a playback failure. The controller must be treated as the sound card for the master mix.

DJUCED: send the master mix to laptop speakers
Open DJUCED’s audio settings and enable SEND THE MASTER TO THE SPEAKERS when you intentionally want the computer’s internal speakers to carry the master output. Keep headphones plugged into the controller for cue monitoring. The exact setting label can vary with DJUCED releases, but it is the master-to-speakers option, not the headphone cue control. If you switch back to external speakers, disable that option and use the controller’s rear outputs so the two paths do not confuse your test.
Serato’s laptop-speaker option
When your Serato version supports laptop speakers, set the computer’s own sound card as the operating-system output before opening Serato. Then open Serato’s Audio tab and enable Use Laptop Speakers. Numark’s Serato guidance warns that assigning the controller as the operating-system input or output can conflict with Serato’s routing. On macOS, the same Use Laptop Speakers control is available in Serato; on Windows, make the computer’s internal device the default before launching the application. If you change the system device while Serato is open, close and reopen the application so it can rebuild its audio route.
2. Put the Inpulse controls in a known-good test position
A closed fader or extreme filter can make a correctly routed deck appear dead. For an initial test, load a local track, press play, and set the controls below to neutral positions. Avoid testing with an unfamiliar streaming file or a complex effect chain until basic output works.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Raise the playing deck’s channel fader to the top or its normal operating position.
- Place the crossfader in the center.
- Set the channel gain/trim and the master level around the middle, then increase them gradually.
- Put each channel’s filter knob in the center. Numark specifically warns that a filter turned fully to Low or Hi can stop that channel from producing audible output.
- Raise the speaker’s own volume control and the computer’s volume control if the computer is part of the selected path.
- For a quick software reset, close and reopen Serato after returning these controls to neutral.
Watch the software meters while the track plays. Meter activity with no sound points toward an output, cable, or volume problem; no meter activity means the deck is not actually playing, is paused, or is being blocked by a channel control or software state. Test one deck at a time, then repeat with the second deck so a single channel setting cannot be mistaken for a global failure.
3. Get headphone cue monitoring working
Headphones do not automatically prove that the master output is working. They use the controller’s separate cue and headphone controls, allowing you to preview a deck even while the master speakers play something else.
- Insert the headphones into the Inpulse’s front headphone jack, not a laptop headphone socket.
- Press the deck’s Cue button for the deck you want to monitor. The Inpulse 500 manual says the two virtual decks are monitored by default, while the cue controls can select a deck or the master output.
- Turn the headphone volume up slowly.
- Set Cue Mix toward the cue side to hear the selected deck, toward master to hear the live mix, or in the middle to hear both.
- Start playback and verify that the deck’s channel fader and gain are open. Cue audio can be audible even when the master fader is down, so test both paths separately.
If another pair of headphones works, the first pair, its plug, or a required adapter is the likely fault. Do not force a plug that does not fit the controller’s socket. A headphone test is useful because it bypasses the rear speaker cables; if cue works but the rear outputs do not, concentrate on the master level, speaker input, and RCA or 1/4-inch connection.

4. Match the speaker connection to the correct Inpulse output
For the Inpulse 500, the manual specifies two rear RCA connectors or two rear 1/4-inch (6.35 mm) connectors for speakers. Use the pair that matches your speaker input and connect both left and right channels where the speaker system supports stereo. Do not use the front headphone socket as a substitute for the line-level master outputs.

Many desktop speaker sets accept one 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack. They need a dual-RCA-to-3.5-mm stereo cable (or an equivalent adapter cable) from the controller’s left and right RCA outputs. A single mono lead, a charge-only cable, or a plug inserted into the wrong socket can leave you with one channel or silence. Verify that the mini-jack is fully seated in the speaker input and that the speaker system is set to the input you used.
PA or powered monitor speakers
Professional powered speakers may use XLR or 1/4-inch inputs. Use connector-matching cables, such as two XLR-to-1/4-inch leads when appropriate for your speaker inputs. Confirm that each speaker is powered on, its input is set correctly, and its local gain is not at zero. Start with low speaker gain, then raise it after the controller’s master signal is confirmed to avoid a loud burst.
Eliminate a cable or speaker failure
Numark’s general controller guidance recommends trying a different set of speakers, headphones, and cables. Test one known-good component at a time: keep the same controller and software, swap only the cable; then swap only the speaker or headphones. This isolates the failed link without changing several variables together. If only one side is silent, swap the left and right cables or inputs to determine whether the fault follows the cable or stays with the speaker.
5. Make sure the computer recognizes the controller over USB
A controller that is not enumerated correctly cannot provide its audio interface to Serato or DJUCED. Disconnect it, restart the computer, and reconnect it directly before opening the DJ application. A controller that lights up may still have an unreliable data connection, because USB power and USB audio data can fail independently.

- Unplug the USB cable from both ends, then restart the computer.
- Connect the controller to a different USB port directly on the computer. Do not use an unpowered USB hub while diagnosing the problem.
- Try another known-good data cable. A cable that charges a device can still fail to carry reliable audio data.
- Open the DJ software only after the operating system has finished detecting the controller.
When a computer has USB-C ports, Numark recommends a straight USB-B-to-USB-C cable where possible instead of a chain of dongles. Adapters can have trouble carrying both power and data. The Inpulse 500 manual lists three USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 connection choices: a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter, a powered USB-C dock, or replacing the supplied lead with a USB-C-to-USB 2 Type-B cable.

The same manual warns that inexpensive adapters may reduce the power delivered to the controller and that an unpowered dock may not supply enough power. If the controller repeatedly disconnects, its lights reset, or the audio vanishes when you move the cable, remove the dock or adapter from the chain and test a direct connection. A USB-C-to-USB-B data cable is a practical replacement when the original lead or adapter is suspect.
6. Install the driver required by your exact Inpulse model
Driver requirements differ among Inpulse models and operating systems. Some controllers are class compliant; others require a manufacturer driver. If the controller is missing from Serato or DJUCED, check the support/download page for your precise model and operating-system version, install or reinstall the listed driver, then restart the computer and reconnect the controller.
Do not install a driver for a different Inpulse model merely because the product names look similar. A mismatched driver can leave the hardware visible to the operating system but unavailable to the DJ application. After installation, confirm that the controller appears in the operating system’s audio or MIDI devices and in the DJ software before reconnecting hubs or additional audio hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches7. Repair robotic, distorted, or choppy audio
Distortion and dropouts generally indicate a USB, power, or computer-load problem rather than a bad music file. Apply the changes below in sequence and test the same track after each one. Keeping the track and output path constant makes it clear which change helped.
Stabilize power and workload
- Connect the laptop to its AC adapter. Battery-saving modes can throttle the processor and USB power.
- Close browsers, video editors, games, cloud-sync tools, and other unnecessary applications.
- Restart the computer to clear a stuck audio process.
- Disconnect other USB devices temporarily, especially storage devices and additional audio hardware.
Increase the audio and USB buffer
A very low buffer reduces latency but leaves less time for the computer to process each audio block. If the buffer is set to a low value such as 5 or 10, raise it one step at a time until the crackling or dropouts stop. Expect a little more monitoring latency at higher values; choose the lowest setting that remains stable for your computer. Do not chase minimum latency while the system is still producing audible glitches.
Apply Serato’s performance checklist
Serato’s official troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for software updates, removing corrupt library files, disabling wireless networking and Bluetooth while testing, temporarily disabling antivirus scanning, turning off screen savers and sleep mode, increasing the USB buffer, connecting the hardware directly to the computer, trying every USB port, disconnecting other USB devices, and running the laptop on mains power. Re-enable security and convenience features one at a time after the audio is stable so you can identify a feature that reintroduces the fault.

Fix an unexpected effect or robotic sound
If the audio sounds robotic or an effect remains when it should not, close Serato and restore the operating-system input and output devices to the computer defaults. Numark identifies a conflict when either system device is set to the controller while Serato is managing the controller’s audio. Reopen Serato after the defaults have been restored. This is a routing reset, not a replacement for checking the physical speaker path.
8. Use the symptom to choose the next test
| What you hear or see | Most useful next check | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Waveform and meters move, but laptop speakers are silent | Use the controller’s rear speaker outputs, or enable the documented laptop-speaker setting for your software | Serato normally routes Inpulse audio through the controller interface |
| Headphones are silent, speakers work | Use the front headphone jack; press the deck Cue button; raise headphone volume and set Cue Mix | Cue monitoring has its own socket and controls |
| One deck is silent | Center that channel’s filter, raise its fader and gain, and check its Cue button and track state | A closed channel control can mute an otherwise playing deck |
| Both speakers are silent but meters move | Test the rear RCA or 1/4-inch cables, speaker power, and a known-good speaker | The software is producing signal but it is not reaching the speakers |
| Sound cuts out when the cable moves or after a few minutes | Use a different direct USB port and data cable; remove unpowered hubs and connect laptop power | Intermittent USB power or data is a common cause of disconnects |
| Robotic, crackling, or heavily distorted sound | Restore computer audio defaults, close background applications, and raise the buffer | Routing conflicts and exhausted processing time can corrupt the stream |
| Controller is absent from the DJ application | Check the exact model’s driver requirement and reconnect after restarting | Class-compliant and driver-dependent models behave differently |
9. Check computer capacity and operating conditions
Numark’s Serato guidance lists 8 GB of RAM and 15 GB of spare SSD storage as recommended Mac and PC baseline resources. More demanding workloads, including stems, intensive scratching, or video, need higher specifications. These figures are capacity guidance, not a guarantee that every computer will deliver glitch-free audio.
If audio is stable with a simple two-deck track but fails when you add stems, video, or several effects, reduce the workload first. Close extra applications, lower the DJ software’s buffer only after stability is established, and keep the laptop connected to power during performance. A clean two-deck test is a useful baseline for separating a capacity problem from a cable or routing fault.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.10. A clean final test
After making changes, run one controlled test instead of changing several settings at once:
- Connect the Inpulse directly to the computer with a known-good data cable.
- Connect one known-good pair of speakers to the controller’s rear outputs and headphones to the front jack.
- Set the operating-system audio device according to your chosen software path; for Serato controller output, do not select the controller as the general system output.
- Open the DJ application, load a local track, and press play.
- Set the channel fader, filter, gain, crossfader, master, headphone volume, and Cue Mix to neutral test positions.
- Confirm deck meters, then test headphones, then test the master speakers.
- If the result is clean, reconnect other USB devices and re-enable wireless, antivirus, and power-management features one at a time.
If the controller still produces no audio after this direct, known-good test, record the exact Inpulse model, operating system, DJ software and version, connection method, and symptom. Note whether meters move, whether headphones work, and whether the fault changes with another cable or speaker. That information is what support needs to distinguish a routing issue from a driver, cable, power, or hardware fault.

Where should I plug headphones into an Inpulse controller?
Use the controller’s front headphone jack, not the computer’s socket. Press the deck’s Cue button, raise headphone volume, and set Cue Mix toward Cue or center. Cue monitoring is separate from the master speaker output.
Why is only one deck or channel silent?
Center that channel’s filter, raise its channel fader and gain, and check that the track is playing. A filter fully at Low or Hi can stop a channel from producing audible output. Also test the crossfader in the center and verify the deck’s Cue state.
What cable connects an Inpulse to ordinary computer speakers?
For the Inpulse 500, use both rear RCA outputs with a dual-RCA-to-3.5-mm stereo cable when the speaker set has one mini-jack input. Powered monitors or PA speakers may instead require two connector-matching XLR or 1/4-inch cables.
Is a USB-C adapter safe for an Inpulse?
The Inpulse 500 manual supports a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter, a powered USB-C dock, or a USB-C-to-USB 2 Type-B cable. Low-cost adapters may reduce power, and unpowered docks may be insufficient. A direct USB-B-to-USB-C data cable is preferred when available.
How do I stop robotic or crackling sound?
Run the laptop from AC power, close background applications, disconnect other USB devices, and raise the audio or USB buffer from a very low value such as 5 or 10. Restore computer audio input and output defaults if Serato sounds robotic, then reopen Serato.
What if the controller is not listed in Serato or DJUCED?
Restart the computer, try a different direct USB port and known-good data cable, and avoid an unpowered hub. Then check the support page for the exact Inpulse model and operating system; some models are class compliant while others need a specific driver.
Can a computer be too slow for Inpulse audio?
Numark lists 8 GB of RAM and 15 GB of spare SSD storage as recommended Serato baseline resources. Stems, video, intensive scratching, and multiple effects require more headroom. Reduce the workload and increase the buffer if glitches appear only during demanding sessions.

The Bottom Line
Most Inpulse audio failures are routing or connection mistakes: choose controller outputs or the documented laptop-speaker option, reset faders and filters, use the correct headphone and speaker sockets, and test known-good cables. For dropouts or robotic sound, remove USB hubs, connect directly and to mains power, close background tasks, restore computer audio defaults, and raise the buffer. If the controller remains silent after that controlled test, verify the exact model’s driver and give support a complete hardware, software, cable, and symptom description.
