When a Halloween game-night lobby fails, start by identifying the scope: if nobody can connect, investigate the host household’s network, router, internet service, or the game service; if only one guest cannot join, that guest’s network is the leading suspect. Run the console or PC’s built-in connection test and record its NAT type and upload/download results before changing anything. Then restart the game, devices, modem, and router in a controlled sequence, testing after each step. A temporary Ethernet connection is the fastest way to separate Wi-Fi interference from an internet or NAT problem.
1. Triage the failure before changing settings
Do not begin by forwarding ports or replacing equipment. First determine exactly who is affected and when the failure occurs. The pattern often tells you which network to investigate.
| What you observe | Most likely area to investigate first | Best first test |
|---|---|---|
| No one can join the host or matchmaking fails for everyone | Host household network, router, ISP path, game service, or platform service | Run the host’s connection test, then test another online game or service |
| Everyone can play except one guest | That guest’s router, NAT, Wi-Fi, ISP, or device | Have the guest run the platform connection test and compare NAT results |
| Players can browse the web but cannot join one another | NAT compatibility, matchmaking, or title-specific ports | Record each player’s NAT type and test a different host |
| The game disconnects or lags only on Wi-Fi | Wireless interference, signal strength, congestion, or local radio conditions | Connect the affected device by Ethernet temporarily |
| The lobby works, but one player drops repeatedly | That player’s connection stability, upload path, or device load | Run a connection test while no downloads or streams are active |
Nintendo’s support guidance makes the same distinction: trouble with one specific player points toward that player’s network, while failures with every player point toward the local network, router, ISP, or service path. Treat this as a diagnostic rule, not a guarantee; a game-service outage can mimic a household problem.

2. Capture a baseline connection test
Before rebooting anything, run the built-in internet test on each platform involved. Record the NAT type, download speed, upload speed, and any error code. A screenshot or note in the group chat prevents everyone from guessing after a setting changes.

- Record NAT exactly as shown. Platforms use different labels, such as Open, Moderate, Strict, or numbered types.
- Record both directions. Upload capacity matters when a player is hosting or sending voice and gameplay data.
- Record the time and connection method. Note Wi-Fi or Ethernet, the room, and whether streaming or downloads were running.
- Test the suspected guest separately. A single failing player should provide the same information from their own network.
Speed results are evidence, not a universal pass/fail grade. There is no single bandwidth number that applies to every multiplayer title. A stable route and compatible NAT can matter more than a high headline speed, while a saturated upload connection can cause lag even when a speed test looks fast.
3. Use the least disruptive restart sequence
Restarting is worthwhile when done methodically. Rebooting every device at once removes the evidence about which change helped. Test after each stage.
- Quit the game completely. Close it rather than leaving it suspended or in a quick-resume state.
- Restart the console or PC. This clears a stuck network session, adapter state, or game process.
- Power-cycle the modem or gateway. Unplug it, wait for its status lights to settle after reconnecting, and confirm that internet access returns.
- Restart the router or mesh system. Allow every access point to come back online before testing the lobby.
- Run the platform connection test again. Compare NAT and speed results with the baseline.
- Join a fresh lobby. Do not reuse an old invite or session if the game has a host-specific lobby token.
If the issue returns immediately, note whether the NAT type changed. A reboot can temporarily refresh a public address or mapping, but it does not permanently fix a restrictive topology.

Network address translation (NAT) lets multiple devices with private addresses share one public ISP address. The router tracks outgoing connections and decides which incoming traffic can reach a particular console or PC. Multiplayer games that use peer-to-peer connections or direct voice paths depend on those mappings being reachable from both sides.
Activision’s networking explanation describes Moderate or Type 2 NAT and Strict or Type 3 NAT as conditions that can limit peer connections. Nintendo likewise warns that stricter NAT types may prevent online activities such as connecting with other players. The practical consequence is that two people can both browse the web and pass a basic internet test yet fail to join each other because their NAT environments cannot establish the required peer path.

| Result pattern | What it suggests | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Open or less restrictive NAT; joins most players | Basic routing is probably functional | Investigate the specific failing player, title service, or Wi-Fi stability |
| Moderate/Type 2 NAT; some players fail | Peer connectivity is limited in certain combinations | Compare NAT with the player you cannot join; inspect UPnP and double NAT |
| Strict/Type 3 NAT; many direct joins fail | Incoming or peer traffic is heavily restricted | Check for two routers, carrier-grade NAT, firmware, and the official game guide |
| NAT changes between tests | Router, ISP, or network path is assigning inconsistent mappings | Repeat tests after a full gateway restart and document the pattern |
NAT labels are platform-specific indicators, not universal grades. Compare players only when you know the same platform’s terminology and the same game’s networking behavior.
5. Try Ethernet as a diagnostic, not just a performance upgrade
Connect the affected console or PC directly to the router with an Ethernet cable for one session. This temporary test is reversible and isolates wireless interference, weak signal, roaming between mesh nodes, and local radio congestion.

- If Ethernet does not fix the lobby and NAT remains restrictive, the problem is more likely routing, ISP policy, the game service, or the device itself.
- If Ethernet improves stability but not matchmaking, keep the wired connection for the event while investigating NAT separately.
For a Nintendo Switch dock without a built-in LAN port, Nintendo says: “You must use a USB LAN adapter to establish a wired internet connection if you are using a dock without a built-in LAN port.” Use a compatible adapter and connect it to the dock before running the connection test.
PlayStation recommends a wired connection where possible. Its Remote Play support page lists 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download as a minimum, with 15 Mbps or more in each direction recommended for best performance. Those figures apply specifically to Remote Play; they are not universal bandwidth requirements for every multiplayer game.
6. Check for double NAT and restrictive household topology
Two devices performing NAT can prevent the port mappings that a game needs. A common example is an ISP gateway connected to a separate personal router, with both operating as routers rather than one acting as a modem or access point.

How to recognize double NAT
- The console reports a moderate or strict NAT despite a normal speed test.
- The router’s internet or WAN address is private rather than publicly routable.
- There is an ISP gateway in front of another router, mesh base, or firewall.
- Port mappings work only intermittently or stop after a reboot.
Safer corrections
- Identify every device between the console and the internet service.
- Choose one device to perform routing and NAT.
- Put the second device into bridge or access-point mode if its manufacturer and ISP support that arrangement.
- Restart the gateway, router, and console, then rerun the connection test.
Menus differ by manufacturer, so do not change bridge mode during the party unless you know how to restore the original configuration. Photograph existing settings before making a persistent change.
7. Inspect UPnP, firmware, and title-specific port guidance
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) allows a game or console to request temporary router mappings. If UPnP is disabled, broken, or conflicting with another router, matchmaking can fail. Check whether UPnP is enabled on the device that actually performs NAT, and look for duplicate or stale mappings after a reboot.
Update router firmware when the manufacturer provides a stable release. Firmware updates can correct NAT, IPv6, and connection-tracking defects, but schedule them before game night because the router will reboot and may reset custom settings.
Port forwarding is a persistent manual alternative, not a universal recipe. Activision explains the concept and links platform-specific instructions, while PlayStation identifies UDP port 8572 for Remote Play. That Remote Play port does not automatically apply to another game. Use only the title’s official networking guide and the correct platform instructions.
- Do not copy a port list from a different game.
- Forward a port to a device with a stable local address, or the rule may point to the wrong console after DHCP changes.
- Avoid forwarding broad ranges “just in case.” It increases exposure and may not solve the actual NAT issue.
- After saving a rule, restart the game and rerun the connection test; do not assume that a saved rule worked.
8. Account for ISP, school, hotel, carrier, and apartment networks
Some networks are outside your control. Hotels, schools, workplaces, cellular hotspots, and managed apartment networks may block inbound traffic or place customers behind carrier-grade NAT. In those cases, your router can report a strict NAT even when its settings are correct.

Ask the provider whether the connection uses carrier-grade NAT, inbound filtering, or a shared public address. Explain the exact game, platform, NAT result, and time of failure. Repeatedly changing random port rules on your own router cannot overcome an upstream restriction. A provider may offer a public IPv4 address, bridge mode, or another supported configuration, but availability and terms vary by service.

Only one guest cannot join
- Have that guest run and record the platform connection test.
- Restart the guest’s game, device, router, and modem in the sequence above.
- Try Ethernet or a different Wi-Fi band if available.
- Compare the guest’s NAT type with the host’s.
- If the guest is on a managed or cellular network, contact that provider or try a different connection.
Nobody can join the host
- Run the host connection test and save the results.
- Check whether other online services work from the host device.
- Restart the host network equipment and retest.
- Check the platform and game service status pages if every player is affected.
- Investigate double NAT, UPnP, firmware, or an ISP restriction only after the reversible tests fail.
Players join but experience lag or voice break-up
- Switch the affected device to Ethernet.
- Pause downloads, cloud backups, video streams, and large updates on the household network.
- Run the connection test while the problem is occurring, not only after it disappears.
- Compare upload results and look for a sharp drop or unstable result.
- If only Wi-Fi fails, reposition the access point or use a less congested band; if wired connections also fail, investigate the ISP or router.
The problem appears after changing a router setting
- Restore the photographed previous setting or remove the newest port rule.
- Reboot the router and console.
- Run the connection test and confirm whether NAT returned to its prior state.
- Change one setting at a time and document the result.
10. Choose fixes by speed, reversibility, coverage, and evidence
| Fix | Deployment speed | Reversibility | Coverage | Evidence it provides |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restart game or device | Very fast | Fully reversible | One device | Shows whether the session or device state was stuck |
| Restart modem and router | Fast | Fully reversible | Whole household | Shows whether a temporary gateway or mapping fault existed |
| Temporary Ethernet cable | Fast if cabling is available | Fully reversible | One device | Separates Wi-Fi problems from routing and ISP problems |
| Pause competing traffic | Fast | Fully reversible | Whole household | Shows whether congestion is exhausting upload or download capacity |
| Bridge/access-point correction | Moderate | Reversible but configuration-sensitive | Whole household | Tests whether double NAT caused the restriction |
| UPnP or port-forwarding change | Moderate to slow | Reversible, but persistent | One device or title | Tests a specific mapping requirement when supported by official guidance |
| ISP escalation | Variable | Depends on provider | Whole connection | Confirms upstream NAT or filtering outside your router |
For a last-minute event, prioritize tests that are quick and reversible. A cable test and a controlled restart provide stronger evidence with less risk than changing several permanent router rules minutes before guests arrive.
11. A 15-minute game-night checklist
- Ask whether the failure affects everyone or only one player.
- Run the built-in connection test on the host and affected guest.
- Write down NAT type, upload, download, platform, and Wi-Fi/Ethernet status.
- Quit and restart the game.
- Restart the console or PC.
- Power-cycle the modem or gateway, then the router.
- Retest after each device is online.
- Connect the affected device by Ethernet; use a USB LAN adapter for a Switch dock without a built-in LAN port.
- Pause downloads and streaming.
- If NAT is still restrictive, check for two routers and consult the game’s official networking guide.
- Stop making random port changes; contact the ISP when the network is managed or uses carrier-grade NAT.
12. Prevent the next multiplayer failure
Before the next gathering, run a connection test from the intended host and save the result. Update the game, console, PC, router firmware, and controller software before guests arrive. Confirm that the host uses a stable wired connection when practical, and check whether the router’s public address, NAT type, or topology has changed since the last successful session.
Keep a short record of which player failed, the NAT types shown, whether Ethernet changed the result, and which restart or configuration step helped. That history turns the next Halloween session into a quick diagnosis instead of a sequence of guesses.
