If Modern Warfare 4 crashes, freezes, or returns to Steam immediately after you press Play, work through the checks in this order: restart Steam and Windows, confirm the published PC requirements, update your graphics driver, verify TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, close overlays and recording or input-remapping tools, then reinstall or update the game from Steam Library. Activision identifies launch failures and public-Multiplayer crashes as the most common PC crash points, but it does not promise one universal fix.
The launch-era requirements are Windows 10 or 11 64-bit, an Intel or AMD processor with AVX support, DirectX 12, at least 8 GB of RAM, and 115 GB of free SSD space. Multiplayer use is specified with 16 GB of RAM recommended. TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are mandatory, not optional tuning settings.
What to do first when Modern Warfare 4 crashes on Steam
Start with a clean restart rather than repeatedly pressing Play. Activision’s first-line guidance is to close Modern Warfare 4 and Steam completely, restart the computer, and try again. A restart clears a stalled game process, a Steam client process that still has a file open, and driver or overlay hooks left behind after a crash.
- Exit Modern Warfare 4 if it is still visible. If the window is frozen, use Task Manager to end the game process.
- Exit Steam from its menu and confirm that no Steam process remains active before restarting Windows.
- After Windows loads, open Steam and let any Steam client update finish.
- Start Modern Warfare 4 once, without launching other recording, overlay, tuning, or input-remapping software first.
If the game still closes during startup, do not keep retrying at random. Use the requirement and security checks below before changing files or reinstalling. If it reaches the menu but freezes in public Multiplayer, focus on drivers, cooling, and background applications; Activision says those matches are another frequent crash point.

Activision states that “Most game crashes on PC will occur while attempting to launch the game or while playing in public Multiplayer matches.”
Match your PC to the published requirements
A computer can appear powerful enough yet fail a mandatory platform or security check. Compare your system against all four axes—operating system and security, CPU architecture, memory and graphics, and storage and driver state—rather than checking only the GPU.

Check Windows edition and architecture
Open Windows Settings and view System and About to confirm whether the installation is Windows 10 or 11 and whether the system type is 64-bit. If the system is 32-bit, changing a game setting cannot make it compliant; the operating system must be replaced with a supported 64-bit installation after backing up personal data.

The requirement is for a supported Intel or AMD processor with AVX instructions. Do not infer this from the brand name or from the amount of RAM. Check the processor model in Windows System information and compare its documented instruction-set support with the game’s requirement. If you cannot establish AVX support for the installed CPU, treat that uncertainty as a possible launch blocker instead of spending time on overlays.
Check RAM, DirectX 12, and free SSD space
Use Windows system information to confirm installed memory and run dxdiag to see the DirectX version. In File Explorer, check the free space on the SSD where Steam will install the game. Leave more headroom than the stated 115 GB when possible: the requirement is measured at launch, while patches may need temporary download and unpacking space. An installation on a hard disk does not satisfy the published SSD requirement.

Install the graphics driver specified for your GPU
Activision lists these launch-era PC driver versions. Match the package to the vendor of the installed graphics processor, not to the computer manufacturer’s logo.

These are the versions named in Activision’s 2026 launch guidance. A newer vendor package may be released later, but the important troubleshooting principle is to use a current, supported driver rather than an old image supplied with the PC. If a crash began immediately after a driver change, perform a clean driver installation using the vendor installer’s clean option, then restart Windows before testing the game. If the installer reports that the hardware is unsupported, stop and verify the GPU model; forcing a package for another vendor will not solve a Modern Warfare 4 crash.

A game that flashes briefly and returns to Steam’s Play button can be failing a security prerequisite. Activision states that “TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are required to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.” This requirement is separate from graphics performance and cannot be repaired by lowering in-game settings.
Check the current state in Windows
- Open Windows Security and select Device security. Review the security-processor information for evidence that a TPM is present.
- Open
tpm.mscfrom the Windows Run dialog to inspect the TPM specification version. The required version is 2.0. - Open
msinfo32and inspect the BIOS mode and Secure Boot status. A UEFI installation with Secure Boot enabled is the expected configuration.
Menu wording can differ by Windows release and motherboard firmware. If Windows reports no compatible TPM, an older specification, legacy BIOS mode, or disabled Secure Boot, enter the motherboard’s UEFI setup and consult its own security or boot menus. Save only changes you understand; switching from legacy boot to UEFI can require a properly prepared system disk.
Use Activision’s attestation guidance when the check still fails
Activision provides a Secure Attestation Wizard and BIOS guidance for systems that continue to be rejected after TPM and Secure Boot appear enabled. Follow those instructions for the exact firmware state rather than guessing at unrelated BIOS options. If enabling the features causes Windows not to boot, restore the previous firmware setting, recover Windows first, and obtain motherboard-specific support before trying again.

Remove software that can interfere with boot or gameplay
Activision warns that third-party input-remapping software, overlays, and recording software may disrupt the boot process even when their windows are not visible. For a diagnostic launch, close every nonessential utility, not just the one you suspect.
- Disable game overlays supplied by chat, GPU-control, capture, or performance-monitoring utilities.
- Quit screen recorders, instant-replay tools, macro programs, controller remappers, and virtual input drivers.
- Close hardware-monitoring, RGB-control, overclocking, and fan-control applications temporarily.
- Pause other game launchers and intensive background downloads so Steam can update and unpack files without contention.
Restart Windows after disabling software that loads at sign-in, then test Modern Warfare 4 before re-enabling anything. If the game launches, restore utilities one at a time and test after each change. This isolates the conflicting hook without permanently removing software you need. If the crash returns only when a particular overlay or remapper is active, leave that component disabled while playing or check its publisher for a compatibility update.
Activision’s warning is explicit: “Third-party applications such as input remapping software, overlays, and recording software may interfere with gameplay or disrupt the game’s boot process.”
Install and update Modern Warfare 4 through Steam correctly
For a new installation, use the Steam Library path rather than launching an old shortcut or an incomplete download.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Select Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
- Choose Install, select an SSD with at least 115 GB free, and allow Steam to complete the download.
- Wait for Steam and the game to finish all updates before pressing Play.
The Steam listing gives October 22, 2026 as the release date. Around launch, a client update, depot update, or shader-related preparation can still be running after the main download appears complete. Check the Downloads view and the game’s status before troubleshooting a supposedly broken installation.

When installation appears stuck
First distinguish a paused download from a failed installation. Steam may be downloading, allocating disk space, or unpacking files; each phase can show little network activity while the disk remains busy. Keep the client open until the operation reports completion. If Steam reports insufficient space, free room on the target SSD and restart the install. If it repeatedly fails at the same point, restart Steam and Windows, then retry the installation before changing permissions or deleting folders.
When the game is installed but will not start
Confirm that the installed title is the current Steam entry and that all pending updates have completed. Then return to the requirement, driver, security, and background-software checks. A successful download does not prove that the PC meets AVX, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, or DirectX 12 requirements.

Steam shows Play, then nothing happens
This pattern points first to prerequisites or a blocked boot process. Check 64-bit Windows, AVX support, DirectX 12, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and the GPU driver. Close overlays and remapping tools, restart, and try again. If Steam briefly changes to Running and immediately reverts, note the timing and any Windows or Activision error message for the crash report.
The game reaches a menu and then freezes
A freeze after launch can involve driver state, heat, or a background hook. Verify the vendor driver, make sure cooling vents are clear, and temporarily close monitoring, recording, and overlay applications. Avoid repeatedly hard-powering the PC while a disk operation is active. After a forced restart, let Steam finish any file check or update before launching again.

The crash occurs in public Multiplayer
Activision identifies public Multiplayer as a common crash location. Confirm the PC remains within the memory and graphics requirements, use the current vendor driver, and test with overlays and recording disabled. If campaign or menu play is stable but public Multiplayer consistently crashes, record the map or mode, approximate time, and whether the failure is a freeze or a desktop exit; those details make a report more actionable.

The problem began after an update
Allow Steam and Modern Warfare 4 to finish updating, then restart both Steam and Windows. Check Activision’s current known-issues tracker before making invasive changes. A newly reported issue may affect many systems, while a local failure still calls for the requirement, driver, security, and background-software checks above.
Use the known-issues tracker and submit a report
Persistent crashes should be compared with Activision’s living known-issues tracker. Activision describes it as “a running list of issues that have been identified or reported in Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® 4 and are either under investigation or scheduled to be fixed.” The status can change, so check it again after a game or platform update.
If your symptom is not listed, submit both the Activision PC Crash Report and the relevant bug report. Include the Windows version and 64-bit status, CPU model and AVX capability, GPU vendor and driver version, installed RAM, DirectX 12 status, SSD free space, TPM and Secure Boot state, and the exact point of failure. State whether the game never opens, freezes at a menu, or crashes in public Multiplayer. Mention which overlays, recorders, or remappers were closed during the test and whether a restart changed the result.
What this troubleshooting process can—and cannot—establish
Meeting every listed requirement does not guarantee that a particular PC will never crash. Activision’s guidance covers several possible causes—cooling, requirements, background software, overlays, and drivers—and its tracker records issues that may be under investigation. The available official material does not publish a general Steam crash rate or identify one fix that works for every configuration.
That limitation is useful: treat each step as a controlled check. Change one category, restart when requested, and record the result. If the game still fails after the requirement, driver, firmware, software, and installation checks, use the known-issues and reporting channels instead of repeatedly reinstalling without new evidence.
