Most Modern Warfare 4 (MW4) Campaign crashes and stutters come from one of four conditions: an unmet PC requirement, outdated or unstable graphics software, a background overlay or capture utility, or shaders that have not finished compiling. Work through those causes in that order. Do not launch Campaign while shader preparation is running.
The same diagnosis separates local rendering problems from online lag. A Campaign hitch that occurs on a disconnected or offline-capable session points to the PC and its shader/GPU pipeline; rubber-banding, delayed hit markers, and packet loss point to the network. The steps below cover both cases and explain when to use Activision’s known-issues and reporting forms.

| What you see | Most useful first control | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Crash during launch or in a public Multiplayer match | Requirements, Windows updates, GPU driver, cooling, and background software | Activision identifies these as common PC crash conditions. |
| Crash in the middle of a Campaign mission | Check temperature and storage, then remove overlays, input remappers, and recording tools | A persistent local conflict can survive a normal restart. |
| Black screen or apparent freeze while shaders are preparing | Let Shader Preloading and the one-time first-boot compile finish | Interrupting compilation can leave the game waiting on unfinished GPU work. |
| Short visual hitches in a single-player level | Finish shader preparation, verify the driver, and check that the game is on a healthy SSD | These are rendering or storage symptoms, not automatically network lag. |
| Rubber-banding, delayed hit markers, or packet loss online | Ethernet, router QoS, and stopping other traffic | Activision classifies these as possible lag symptoms driven by ping, packet loss, or shared bandwidth. |
| Campaign launch button is missing on Xbox-on-PC | Restart after checking the current known-issues entry | Activision listed this issue as addressed on October 16, 2026, but says to restart if it continues. |
1. Confirm the PC baseline before changing settings
Activision’s requirements page dated October 1, 2026 applies to the launch configuration and warns that specifications can change. Check every item before treating a crash as an in-game graphics-setting problem.

Check Windows and security requirements
- Open Settings > Windows Update and install pending updates. Restart Windows before testing MW4 again.
- Press
Win+R, entertpm.msc, and confirm that Windows reports a usable TPM. If no compatible TPM is found, consult the computer or motherboard maker before changing firmware settings. - Press
Win+R, entermsinfo32, and check Secure Boot State. Secure Boot changes are made in UEFI firmware; record your current configuration and use the manufacturer’s instructions. - Confirm DirectX support with Windows’ DirectX Diagnostic Tool. A system that cannot provide DirectX 12 compatibility does not meet the listed baseline.
Check memory, GPU, and free SSD space
- Open Settings > System > About to verify installed RAM, then compare it with the 8 GB minimum and the 16 GB profile used for the recommended 90-FPS Multiplayer target.
- Install the driver version listed for your GPU family when it is available for your card. If your manufacturer offers a newer supported package, follow its release guidance, but do not assume an old driver is suitable for this release.
- In Settings > System > Storage, verify that at least 115 GB is free on the SSD used by MW4. Keep additional working room when possible so Windows, shader data, and updates are not competing for the last few gigabytes.
- If the installation cannot maintain the required free space, or the game is on a slow or nearly full drive, moving it to a compatible 1 TB NVMe SSD is the direct storage remedy identified by the current requirements. Check your system’s supported interface and installation constraints before buying a drive.
Check heat and airflow
Activision’s crash guidance specifically says to keep the machine cool. Make sure vents are unobstructed, fans are operating, and the system is not sitting in a confined space. Let a hot laptop or desktop cool fully before another test. Thermal throttling can look like a sudden frame-rate collapse, while an over-temperature shutdown looks like a crash.
2. Apply the official PC crash sequence
Once the baseline is satisfied, use this order after a launch or mid-session crash. Restart MW4 after each crash rather than repeatedly loading the same failed session.
- Close the game and restart it. A clean relaunch clears the immediate failed process and is the first recovery step in Activision’s guidance.
- Shut down background applications. Exit browsers with heavy tabs, chat clients, launchers, hardware-monitoring utilities, and any other nonessential program before starting MW4.
- Remove persistent overlays. Disable overlays supplied by the operating system, storefront, chat software, or GPU utility. Turn them back on one at a time only after Campaign is stable.
- Stop input-remapping software. Close controller, keyboard, macro, and remapping utilities that inject input into the game.
- Stop recording and capture tools. End background video capture, instant-replay, and streaming hooks. These can attach to the rendering process even when no recording is in progress.
- Install the recommended video-card driver. Use the AMD 26.7.1, NVIDIA 616.56, or Intel 32.0.101.8974 version named in the October 1 requirements, matching your hardware family.
- Reboot Windows. A full restart ensures that a closed overlay or driver service is no longer resident before the next Campaign launch.
- Retest one change at a time. If the game now works, restore background programs individually. The first program that brings the crash back is the conflict to remove or update.
Why overlays deserve their own test
An overlay can draw over the game, monitor a frame rate, remap input, or intercept capture commands. Those hooks run at the same time as the renderer and may fail only in a particular mission or after a driver update. Disabling every overlay for one complete Campaign test is more informative than disabling one and leaving several others active.

3. Let shader preparation finish
Shaders are small programs that tell the GPU how to render surfaces, lighting, shadows, and visual effects. MW4 uses Shader Preloading to prepare those programs before launch, reducing shader processing during play and helping minimize performance hitches.
Steam still performs a one-time first-boot shader compilation. Preloading does not eliminate that first compile. After a game update, the preparation step runs again before launch. The safe rule is simple: wait for the progress indicator to complete and do not enter Campaign while compilation is active.
What a shader-related failure looks like
- A black screen appears while the game is compiling or immediately after an update.
- The first Campaign load has severe, repeatable hitches that diminish after preparation completes.
- The game appears unresponsive during the compile stage but the system itself remains usable.
These signs do not prove that the GPU is defective. They indicate that the game may still be building the data it needs for the current driver and content version.

Safe recovery from a stalled or interrupted compile
- Wait for the displayed shader process to finish before pressing Play or selecting Campaign.
- If the process truly stops progressing, close MW4 normally and restart the computer once.
- Launch MW4 again, allow Shader Preloading to run from the beginning, and leave it alone until it completes.
- If the problem returns, revisit the baseline: install the listed driver, confirm 115 GB of SSD space, and check cooling and background hooks.
- After any substantial game or driver update, expect preparation to run again; do not interpret that repeat as a new hardware failure.
Force-closing the game every time the screen is black prevents the one-time compile from completing and can turn a temporary wait into a repeatable launch problem.

4. Diagnose local rendering stutter separately from network lag
“Stuttering” describes more than one failure. A local rendering hitch is a frame-production problem on the PC. Network lag is a timing problem between the game and its servers. The remedies are different.
| Symptom | Likely category | Test | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Campaign hitches while moving through a level, especially before shader preparation finishes | Local rendering or shader work | Complete shader preparation, then test Campaign without overlays | Use the shader, driver, storage, cooling, and background-software steps in this guide |
| Rubber-banding in an online match | Network lag | Compare a wired connection with the normal wireless path and watch for packet loss | Use Ethernet, configure router QoS, and stop other heavy traffic |
| Hit markers arrive late or shots register after a delay | Network latency or packet loss | Stop streaming and large downloads on the same connection, then retest | Improve the connection rather than changing Campaign graphics |
| Black screen during shader preparation | Shader compilation | Check whether the shader progress step is still active | Allow the compile to finish; restart once only if it is genuinely stuck |
What affects online symptoms
Activision notes that ping depends mainly on Internet-service quality and geographic distance to the game servers. Packet loss and shared bandwidth can make the experience worse. Connect the gaming PC or console by wired Ethernet when practical, enable suitable quality-of-service rules on the router, and pause simultaneous streaming, cloud synchronization, and large downloads.

PlayStation 5
Update the system software, restart the console, and use Activision’s documented PlayStation cache or old-data cleanup steps if normal restarting does not resolve the crash. The PC driver and TPM checks do not apply to a console.
6. Fix a missing Campaign launch button
Activision’s October 16, 2026 known-issues entry says an Xbox-on-PC Campaign launch-button problem was addressed. If the button is still missing, fully restart the game and check the current known-issues page for an updated status before reinstalling anything. A restart is the documented immediate action for a lingering occurrence.
If the issue remains after the restart and the known-issues entry does not list it as active, report it rather than repeatedly changing graphics settings. Include the platform, game build, what appears on screen, and the exact point at which the Campaign option disappears.

Activision maintains separate channels for current issues, PC crashes, and general Modern Warfare 4 bug reports. Use them after completing the relevant steps above, especially when the failure is reproducible.
Prepare a useful report
- What happened: state whether it was a launch crash, a mid-mission crash, a shader black screen, a visual hitch, a network symptom, or a missing button.
- Where it happened: name the Campaign mission or menu, platform, and whether the game was entering, leaving, or actively playing a session.
- When it happened: note whether it began after a game update, driver update, Windows update, or first boot.
- How to reproduce it: list the shortest sequence that causes the failure, including whether overlays, remappers, and capture tools were disabled.
- System context: provide the Windows edition, GPU family and driver version, RAM amount, available SSD space, and whether shader preparation completed.
Use the PC crash-report form for a PC crash and the Modern Warfare 4 bug-report form for an unlisted behavior. A concise, repeatable report gives support a way to distinguish a general known issue from a machine-specific conflict.
