When Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II cannot find a crossplay match, first rule out an Activision or platform outage, then verify every player’s account and crossplay access. After that, test the connection with Ethernet, restart and update the network equipment, and investigate NAT or firewall restrictions. Do not begin by forwarding ports: router changes cannot repair a server outage or a disabled account.
A long search is not automatically a bug. Activision says connection quality is the most critical matchmaking factor and time to match is second. Playlist availability, recent maps and modes, skill, input device, platform and voice chat also affect the search. The sequence below separates service failures from party setup, Wi-Fi, NAT and ordinary matchmaking scarcity.
1. Check whether the problem is an outage
Open Activision’s Modern Warfare II support hub and its known-issues and connection-help pages. Check the online-service status for the platform used by the affected player, such as PlayStation Network, Xbox services or Steam. PlayStation’s own troubleshooting guidance starts with checking PSN status for this reason. A regional outage, maintenance window or authentication incident cannot be fixed by changing your router.
The support information is time-sensitive. Activision lists September 15, 2022 as the update date for its “Connecting to a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II Game” article, while platform status pages can change by the minute. If a status page reports an incident, record the notice and wait for service recovery before making local network changes. If all services are operational, continue with the player and connection checks below.

What an outage usually looks like
- Several players on different networks lose access at the same time.
- Sign-in, store, friends, or other online games fail in addition to MWII matchmaking.
- The game reports a service or authentication error before it begins searching.
- A known-issues page names the same playlist, platform or connection symptom.
These signs are clues, not proof. A party can show the same error when one member has a local NAT or account problem, so confirm with another network or player before assuming a global outage.
2. Verify the crossplay party and online accounts
Every participant should be signed in to the intended Activision account and to the online service required by their platform. A player who is signed out, suspended, using a different account, or unable to reach platform services can prevent a cross-platform party from joining or searching normally.
- Leave the current party and have each player confirm the Activision account name shown in the game.
- Confirm that each console or PC profile is the one linked to that Activision account.
- Test a basic online feature, such as entering an online menu or another multiplayer title, on every platform.
- Enable crossplay wherever the player’s platform exposes that control. If a platform does not show a crossplay switch, do not assume the feature is available or disabled; check that platform’s current support guidance.
- Re-form the party after all players are online. Have the host invite one player at a time so you can identify whether a particular account causes the failure.
On PC, Steam’s official MWII support page directs technical issues to Activision’s support surface. That does not make Steam responsible for every connection fault; it identifies where MWII-specific help is handled.

Run a short search with the host alone, then add players individually. If solo matchmaking works but adding one account consistently breaks the party, investigate that player’s sign-in, NAT type, firewall, or platform service before changing settings for everyone. If no combination can search, return to the service-status and network sections.

3. Read the symptom as a connection signal
Activision’s 2024 matchmaking white paper defines ping as the round-trip time between a player’s client and a dedicated server. It states: “Connection is the most critical and heavily weighted factor in the matchmaking process.” Time to match is the second most critical factor. A search that keeps widening toward higher latency, repeated party disconnects, or an inability to join a friend is therefore consistent with a connection, NAT, firewall or service-path problem, although the symptom alone cannot identify the exact cause.

4. Run the low-risk local network test
The fastest way to separate a wireless problem from a wider matchmaking issue is a temporary wired test. PlayStation recommends wired networking where possible, restarting network equipment, moving a console closer to the router when Wi-Fi is necessary, and updating router firmware.
- Connect the console or PC directly to the router with a working Cat 6 Ethernet cable. Use a router LAN port rather than a Wi-Fi extender for this test.
- Close MWII completely and restart the console or PC.
- Power off the modem and router. Leave them off for at least five minutes, then power on the modem, wait for its normal connection lights, and power on the router.
- Install any available router firmware update using the manufacturer’s documented process. Do not interrupt power during the update.
- Run the same playlist and party test over Ethernet. Compare whether searches complete, whether the party remains together, and whether ping or packet-loss indicators improve.
A wired result is diagnostic, not a guarantee. If Ethernet fixes the issue, improve Wi-Fi placement or use Ethernet permanently. If Ethernet changes nothing, the fault is more likely to involve service availability, account access, NAT, firewall policy, ISP routing or matchmaking supply.

- Move the console or PC closer to the main router, not merely closer to a repeater.
- Use the router’s less congested Wi-Fi band when supported, and avoid placing the device behind a television or inside a cabinet.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups and video streams while testing.
- Test at another time of day. A congested local or ISP link can make a healthy service appear unreachable.
These changes address latency and packet loss. They do not alter Activision’s account or crossplay permissions.

5. Check NAT and firewall reachability
NAT determines how readily your device can establish and maintain peer and service connections. A strict or unavailable NAT indication can make it difficult to join friends, host a party or keep a lobby together. Firewall rules, carrier-grade NAT from an ISP, double-NAT (for example, a modem/router feeding a second router), and blocked outbound traffic can produce similar symptoms.
PlayStation port guidance, with its limits
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PS5 connection guidance lists these ports:

Those numbers are PlayStation connection guidance, not a universal MWII port list for Xbox, Steam or Battle.net. Platform, router and ISP requirements vary. Do not copy this table into another platform’s firewall without checking its current documentation.

- Check whether the router reports double-NAT, UPnP status or a strict NAT before changing anything.
- Enable the router’s documented UPnP option if you understand its security implications and no household policy forbids it.
- If UPnP is unavailable or unreliable, assign the console or PC a reserved local address in the router’s DHCP settings.
- Only then consider manual port forwarding, using the platform’s official port list and the router’s instructions.
- Document every rule and the original settings so you can remove or roll back the change.
PlayStation’s NW-102650-4 guidance also suggests a static IP and temporary DNS changes, and directs users to their ISP for help opening ports. Treat DNS changes as a diagnostic experiment, not a permanent speed upgrade. Port forwarding can improve reachability but cannot lower the physical distance to a server, cure ISP congestion or force a lobby to exist.

When to call the ISP
Contact the ISP if the modem is behind carrier-grade NAT, you cannot obtain a public IPv4 address, the router receives a private WAN address, or port-opening instructions do not match your equipment. Ask specifically about double-NAT, inbound restrictions and whether a public address is available. Do not expose a device directly to the internet as a substitute for a documented router configuration.
6. Account for matchmaking dimensions beyond the network
Activision documents several matchmaking dimensions in addition to connection and search time: playlist diversity, recently played maps and modes, skill or performance, input device, platform and voice chat. A narrow playlist, an unusual party composition or a small regional player pool can therefore produce a long search even when the network is healthy.
Use a broad test playlist
- Choose a well-populated standard playlist instead of a limited-time, highly filtered or private mode.
- Search alone for one attempt, then search with the full party.
- Compare a peak local play period with an off-peak period.
- Record the approximate ping range and whether the search eventually finds a lobby.
Activision says the system loosens skill targets faster than delta-ping targets while forming a lobby. In practical terms, it generally gives connection quality priority over finding a more distant player with a closer skill match. A long search can be the result of preserving an acceptable connection while the system waits for a suitable lobby.
Voice chat and input settings
Because voice chat and input device are among the documented dimensions, changing those options can alter the search population. Use the default settings for a diagnostic attempt, then reapply your preferred restrictions one at a time. This does not mean voice chat or a particular controller is defective; it means each filter can reduce the available pool.

7. Platform-focused checks
PlayStation
- Check PSN status before troubleshooting the console.
- Prefer Ethernet, restart the console and network equipment, and update router firmware.
- Review the console’s NAT result and apply the PS5 port guidance only when the issue is clearly reachability-related.
- If the console cannot obtain a stable address or the router is ISP-managed, ask the ISP for assistance rather than guessing at ports.
PC through Steam
- Confirm Steam is online and that MWII is launched from the intended account.
- Allow the game and required launcher components through the operating system firewall when prompted; remove duplicate or obsolete rules if they conflict.
- Temporarily disable third-party VPNs, traffic filters or security software only for a controlled test, then restore protection.
- Use Steam’s official MWII support route for game-specific account or installation problems, which directs technical issues to Activision.
The same network principles apply to other PC launchers, but their account and firewall paths differ. Do not apply PlayStation port numbers as if they were a PC requirement.
Xbox and other consoles
- Check the platform’s online-service status and the console’s NAT report.
- Test the console directly on the router, then restart the modem and router.
- Verify the Activision account and crossplay state for every party member.
- Use the platform holder’s current port and NAT documentation rather than the PlayStation list above.

9. Common mistakes that waste time
- Forwarding ports during an outage: Local rules cannot restore a failed service.
- Changing every player’s router at once: Test one variable and one party member so the result is meaningful.
- Assuming a long search equals high skill mismatch: Connection quality and time to match are weighted first, and playlist population also matters.
- Using a PlayStation port list on another platform: The listed TCP and UDP ranges are specifically PS5 guidance.
- Leaving temporary DNS, static-IP or forwarding rules undocumented: Record the old values and remove experiments that do not help.
- Testing only over Wi-Fi: Without an Ethernet comparison, interference and packet loss remain confounded with server or account issues.
- Disabling security permanently: Use a short, controlled firewall test and restore protection immediately.
10. When the evidence points beyond your home network
If service pages are clear, accounts are correct, Ethernet makes no difference, and a broad playlist still fails for multiple players, capture the details before contacting support. Note the platform, Activision account involved, approximate time and region, NAT result, whether solo search works, whether another network changes the result, and any exact error code. This information helps support distinguish account, platform-service, ISP-path and matchmaking-pool problems.
Do not claim that one router setting guarantees a match. The documented guidance supports a sequence of isolation tests: status first, account and crossplay verification second, wired and restart tests third, then carefully scoped NAT or firewall work. The result of each test determines the next branch.
