If File Explorer shows generic icons instead of picture previews, first choose a medium-or-larger icon layout and check that Always show icons, never thumbnails is turned off. For OneDrive, make the file available on this device. If local folders still show icons, clear the thumbnail cache with Disk Cleanup. Network shares may be restricted by an administrator policy, while the Preview pane is a separate feature with a security change introduced in October 2025.
This guide applies primarily to Windows 10 and Windows 11 File Explorer. The view controls are documented by Microsoft’s File Explorer guide; the precise checkbox path below is also described in a Microsoft Community answer.
Start with the folder’s view
File Explorer can display a folder as a list, details, tiles, or icons. Thumbnail images appear only in layouts large enough to show them. Open the affected folder, select View on the command bar, choose Large icons or Extra large icons, and check whether previews return. Medium icons is usually the smallest useful setting for thumbnails. Microsoft’s accessibility documentation explains that different layouts show either thumbnails or ordinary file-type icons: File Explorer layout guidance.
Make this change in the folder where the problem occurs first. If thumbnails work there but not elsewhere, the issue is likely a folder view or file-location difference rather than a system-wide setting.

Turn off “Always show icons, never thumbnails”
A Microsoft Community answer gives this exact path; treat it as community guidance rather than a claim that the setting is documented in Microsoft’s main support article.
- Open File Explorer and select the three-dot menu (or View menu on older Windows 10 builds), then choose Options.
- In Folder Options, open the View tab.
- Clear Always show icons, never thumbnails.
- Select Apply, then OK, and revisit the folder using Medium, Large, or Extra large icons.
If the box was already clear, do not keep changing unrelated Explorer options. Continue with the location-specific checks below.
When only OneDrive files lack previews
OneDrive has its own availability and size limits. In the affected OneDrive folder, use Medium icons or a larger layout. If local Explorer thumbnails still do not appear, right-click the file or folder and choose Always keep on this device. Microsoft’s instructions are in Fix missing thumbnails in OneDrive.
A blue cloud beside an item means it is online-only. Files On-Demand does not download an online-only file until you open it, so it is not available offline. The status behavior is described in Microsoft’s Files On-Demand guide. Marking an item to remain on the device gives Windows a local copy from which Explorer can build a preview.

OneDrive formats and size limits
Microsoft states that OneDrive thumbnail previews are unavailable for PDFs and for images larger than 100 MB. That is a documented OneDrive limitation, not evidence that your Windows thumbnail cache is damaged. Use the original application or open the file when a preview is required.
Rebuild the Windows thumbnail cache with Disk Cleanup
Windows stores generated previews in a thumbnail cache. Disk Cleanup can remove that cache so Explorer can create fresh previews. Microsoft lists Thumbnails as a cleanup category in Free up drive space in Windows.
- Press the Windows key and type Disk Cleanup, then open the app.
- When prompted, select the Windows system drive (normally C:) and choose OK.
- In the files-to-delete list, select Thumbnails. Review every other selected category before deleting; uncheck anything you do not intend to remove.
- Select OK, confirm Delete Files, and wait for cleanup to finish.
- Reopen the affected folder. If Explorer still shows old icons, restart File Explorer from Task Manager or restart Windows, then allow time for previews to be regenerated.
Clearing the cache is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed repair. If the same files fail after Windows rebuilds previews, identify whether their location, format, or policy is the differentiator instead of repeatedly deleting the cache.
Check whether a network or work-share policy is involved
If local folders show thumbnails but a mapped drive, NAS, or company file share shows only icons, the organization may be enforcing a policy. Microsoft’s ADMX_Thumbnails Policy CSP reference documents settings that can make File Explorer display icons instead of thumbnails on network folders and controls thumbnail caching in hidden thumbs.db files.

Because these are managed settings, ask your administrator to inspect the applicable policy for the device and network location. Avoid copying registry edits from generic forums: a policy may be intentional, and a local change can be overwritten or violate workplace controls.
Do not confuse thumbnails with the Preview pane
A thumbnail is the small image in a folder listing. The Preview pane is the larger panel that opens beside the listing when you choose View → Show → Preview pane. Fixing one does not automatically fix the other.
Microsoft says that, starting with security updates released on or after October 14, 2025, File Explorer automatically disables the Preview pane for files downloaded from the internet. The stated reason is protection against a vulnerability that could leak NTLM hashes when a potentially unsafe file contains HTML references to external paths. Microsoft’s support notice (published October 22, 2025, KB 5070960) is at File Explorer automatically disables the preview feature for files downloaded from the internet.
That security behavior concerns the Preview pane, not ordinary thumbnail tiles. Do not disable the protection as a routine response to missing thumbnails. If only downloaded files fail in the Preview pane, follow Microsoft’s security guidance for your Windows version.

Use the symptom to choose the next check
| What you see | Most useful next check |
|---|---|
| No thumbnails in any local folder | Set Medium-or-larger icons, clear the “Always show icons, never thumbnails” option, then use Disk Cleanup’s Thumbnails category. |
| Only OneDrive items are affected | Use a larger icon layout and choose Always keep on this device; check the PDF and 100 MB image limits. |
| Only a mapped drive or work share is affected | Have the administrator review thumbnail and network-folder policies. |
| Only the Preview pane fails for downloaded files | Treat it as the October 2025 security behavior, not as a thumbnail-cache fault. |
When the standard checks do not work
The available Microsoft material does not establish one universal cause for format-specific failures or third-party thumbnail handlers. Before escalating, record:
- Your Windows edition and build number.
- The affected extensions (for example, JPEG, PNG, video, or PDF).
- Whether the files are local, OneDrive online-only, synced locally, or on a network share.
- Whether ordinary local files in a new test folder display thumbnails.
- Whether the failure affects thumbnail tiles, the Preview pane, or both.
This information separates a view setting from storage availability, a documented OneDrive limit, a network policy, or an application-specific handler. It also gives your administrator or software vendor enough detail to investigate without asking you to make unsupported registry changes.

If your actual goal is to generate clean screenshots of websites for documentation, testing, or an AI workflow—not to repair File Explorer’s local thumbnails—ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one request. It accepts cookie and consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; only clean shots are billed. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
The API supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, and PDF output, full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocked requests or resource types, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting, and an OpenAPI specification. Frequently Asked Questions
Does this guidance cover both Windows 10 and Windows 11?
Yes. It is aimed at File Explorer in Windows 10 and Windows 11; menu wording can vary slightly by build.
Why might a file type still show an icon after the cache is rebuilt?
Microsoft’s cited guidance does not define a universal fix for every format-specific or third-party thumbnail handler. Record the extension and test the same type in a local folder before contacting the application’s vendor or your administrator.
