If Stellar Blade screenshots are missing on Nintendo Switch 2, first press the Capture Button in the HOME Menu and open Album. This separates a console-wide storage or controller problem from a game scene that intentionally blocks captures. If HOME captures work but Stellar Blade shows Unable to take a capture now., the restriction is likely limited to that application or sequence rather than a failed console.

Use this two-minute test before changing anything

The scope of the failure determines the correct fix. Do not begin by reinstalling Stellar Blade or changing graphics settings; Nintendo’s documented troubleshooting path starts with the HOME Menu, storage, and controller isolation.

What you observe What it usually indicates First action
A screenshot saves from the HOME Menu but not in Stellar Blade The game, a particular scene, or an application restriction may be blocking captures Leave menus or cutscenes, try another playable scene, and check for the on-screen restriction message
Stellar Blade fails in every scene, but HOME Menu captures save The problem is confined to the software or its restricted content Test several unrelated scenes and consult the software manual for capture limitations
The Capture Button fails in the HOME Menu as well Storage capacity or capture-button hardware is the likely cause Check Album capacity, system version, storage media, and a second left Joy-Con 2
Only one sequence fails while other scenes save That sequence may deliberately disable screenshots Continue after the sequence and test again outside menus, cutscenes, or other restricted content

Confirm where Switch 2 saves screenshots

Capture a known-good HOME Menu image

  1. Press the Capture Button on the left Joy-Con 2 while the HOME Menu is visible.
  2. Open Album from the HOME Menu.
  3. Look for the new image in the Album. Nintendo’s baseline workflow is to press Capture and then open Album to view the saved image.

If the test image appears, the console can create and display screenshots. Your next test should be in Stellar Blade, not another storage change. If the HOME image does not appear, treat the issue as a system capture failure and follow the storage and controller steps below.

Check the correct Album and storage location

Switch 2 can save captures in system memory or to a compatible microSD Express card. Nintendo states that the console accepts microSD Express cards for saving new screenshots and copying captures from system memory; an ordinary microSD card is not the supported format for this function.

#1 Best Overall
Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

On system version 20.1.1 or higher, Nintendo lists capacity of up to 15,000 screenshots in system memory and up to 15,000 screenshots on a microSD Express card. Nintendo lists lower limits for older system versions, so the number shown on an older console may not match those figures.

What to do when the HOME Menu capture fails

1. Check whether Album storage is full

Open Album and review the stored captures. If you have reached the applicable limit, delete unwanted images or move captures off the current storage. Nintendo specifically recommends deleting or moving captures when storage prevents new screenshots.

  • Keep important images before deleting them.
  • If you use removable storage, insert a microSD Express card that is compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.
  • Use the card to save new screenshots or copy captures from system memory, then retest the Capture Button in the HOME Menu.

Do not assume that the 15,000-image figure applies to every console: it is Nintendo’s stated maximum for system version 20.1.1 or higher. Older system software has lower listed limits.

2. Verify the system version

  1. Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select System Update.
  4. Note the installed version before comparing your Album capacity with Nintendo’s limits.

This check matters because a console on an older version may reach its lower capture limit sooner. Update according to the console’s normal System Update process, then repeat the HOME Menu capture test.

3. Isolate the left Joy-Con 2

If storage is available and a HOME Menu capture still fails, Nintendo recommends testing the controller hardware separately from the dock and game software.

  1. Undock the console.
  2. Attach the Joy-Con 2 controllers to the console.
  3. From the HOME Menu, press the left controller’s Capture Button.
  4. If it fails, try another left Joy-Con 2 and repeat the same HOME Menu test.

The result identifies the next service decision:

  • The second left Joy-Con 2 works: the original left Joy-Con 2 needs service.
  • Neither left Joy-Con 2 works: the console may need service.

This test is more useful than repeatedly pressing Capture during gameplay because it removes Stellar Blade and any game-specific restriction from the diagnosis.

When Stellar Blade alone rejects screenshots

Recognize Nintendo’s restriction message

Nintendo explains that some applications, or specific parts of games, do not support screenshot captures by design. The console can indicate this with the message Unable to take a capture now. If HOME Menu captures succeed and this message appears only in Stellar Blade, the behavior is consistent with a software or scene restriction.

Test a different type of scene

  1. Leave the menu, cutscene, or sequence where the failure occurred.
  2. Return to ordinary playable content.
  3. Press the Capture Button once.
  4. Open Album and check whether the new image appears.

A capture that works in a different scene confirms that the original location was restricted or otherwise unsuitable for system screenshots. A failure in one cutscene does not prove that every Stellar Blade scene blocks captures.

Separate an application-wide block from a sequence block

Try more than one unrelated playable area. If all ordinary gameplay scenes fail while the HOME Menu succeeds, the restriction may apply broadly to the software. If only one cinematic, menu, loading transition, or other sequence fails, it is more likely limited to that content.

  1. Test HOME Menu capture. Press Capture on the HOME Menu and check Album.
  2. If it succeeds, test Stellar Blade outside the failed sequence. Avoid menus and cutscenes for the first in-game test.
  3. If Stellar Blade still fails, note the message. “Unable to take a capture now.” points toward an application or content restriction recognized by Nintendo.
  4. If HOME capture fails, inspect Album storage. Delete or move captures that you no longer need.
  5. Check System Settings > System > System Update. Compare the installed version with the 20.1.1 threshold used for Nintendo’s 15,000-screenshot figures.
  6. Add supported storage if needed. Use a microSD Express card; an ordinary microSD card is not the supported format for Switch 2 capture storage.
  7. Retest from the HOME Menu. This confirms whether storage changes solved the system-level failure.
  8. Test controller hardware. Undock, attach the Joy-Con 2 controllers, and try another left Joy-Con 2.
  9. Use the isolation result. A working second controller points to service for the original left Joy-Con 2; failure with both points to possible console service.

How to interpret every outcome

HOME works; Stellar Blade works in some scenes

Your console, Album, and Capture Button are functioning. The failed location is likely restricted content. Continue playing and capture after leaving that sequence rather than changing system storage or controller settings.

HOME works; no Stellar Blade scene works

The evidence confines the failure to Stellar Blade or its content. Test several ordinary gameplay scenes and note whether the console displays the restriction message. Nintendo’s general guidance confirms that applications or parts of software may disable captures, but the available official information does not establish a Stellar Blade-specific defect.

HOME fails; storage is full

Free space by deleting or moving captures, or add a compatible microSD Express card. Retest in the HOME Menu before launching Stellar Blade again. If the test image appears afterward, the original failure was storage-related.

HOME fails; storage is available; another left Joy-Con 2 works

The original left Joy-Con 2 is the isolated failing component. Arrange service for that controller. Until then, the working controller can confirm that the console itself is able to accept Capture Button input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HOME fails; storage is available; neither left Joy-Con 2 works

Because two controllers produce the same result in the HOME Menu, Nintendo’s isolation rule points toward possible console service. Include the storage check, system version, and controller comparison when describing the problem.

What is not currently confirmed for Stellar Blade

Official information confirms the Switch 2 release of Stellar Blade Complete Edition and Nintendo’s general screenshot troubleshooting. It does not document a Stellar Blade-specific screenshot bug, a dedicated patch for failed captures, or a game-specific workaround.

Consequently, no evidence-based fix supports promising that reinstalling the game, changing graphics settings, or changing photo-mode settings will restore a failed system capture. Those changes may alter the game, but they do not address Nintendo’s documented decision path of scene restrictions, storage capacity, system version, and Capture Button hardware.

Preventing future missing captures

  • Check Album soon after an important capture instead of assuming it saved.
  • Keep enough capture capacity available by moving or deleting images you no longer need.
  • Use microSD Express storage when you need additional Switch 2 capture space; ordinary microSD cards are not the supported capture format.
  • When a capture fails, repeat the test in the HOME Menu so you know whether the problem is system-wide.
  • For an in-game failure, try a normal playable scene after leaving menus and cutscenes before concluding that all Stellar Blade captures are blocked.
  • When contacting support, state the system version, whether HOME capture works, the exact on-screen message, the scenes tested, storage status, and whether a second left Joy-Con 2 changes the result.

Fast decision checklist

  • Album missing one image: test a fresh HOME Menu capture and open Album immediately.
  • HOME capture succeeds: troubleshoot Stellar Blade’s scene or application scope.
  • Message says “Unable to take a capture now.”: leave the restricted content and test another scene.
  • HOME capture fails: check Album capacity and the installed system version.
  • Storage is full: delete or move captures, or insert a compatible microSD Express card.
  • Storage is available but HOME still fails: undock, attach Joy-Con 2 controllers, and test another left Joy-Con 2.
  • Only the original controller fails: arrange service for that left Joy-Con 2.
  • Both controllers fail: the console may need service.
