If a Living World episode is missing in Guild Wars 2, the cause is usually an account entitlement that is absent or has not synchronized—not damaged game files. Open the Story Journal, select the affected chapter, and read its state. A lock icon means the account does not currently have access (or the entitlement has not arrived); a playable chapter points to a different problem, such as story progression or the wrong account.

ArenaNet changed Living World access on October 14, 2026. Season 2 is free for qualifying level 80 players, Seasons 3 and 4 come with the Heart of Thorns/Path of Fire bundle, and Season 5 (The Icebrood Saga) comes with End of Dragons. Existing owners should receive the applicable episodes automatically. Use the checks below before buying anything or reinstalling the client.

Start with the Story Journal

The Story Journal is the fastest way to distinguish an entitlement problem from a local installation problem. Open it from the hero panel, choose Living World, and select the season and episode that you cannot start.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Lock icon and a purchase action: the account is not currently recognized as owning that episode, or the entitlement has not synchronized.
  • Play or continue option: the account owns the episode. If it still will not start, check story prerequisites, the selected character, and whether you are logged into the intended account.
  • Episode missing entirely: verify that you are looking under the correct Living World season and that the game client is fully updated.

Take a screenshot of the chapter state before changing anything. It gives Support a precise record of what the account is showing.

Understand the October 2026 access model

On October 14, 2026, ArenaNet replaced the old model in which Living World seasons could be purchased separately. Access is now tied to the base game, expansion bundles, and the character requirement for Season 2.

Living World content Current entitlement What you should do
Season 2 Free with the base game for an account that has a level 80 character Confirm that the account has a level 80 character, then check the Story Journal again. Do not buy the old season as a first response.
Seasons 3 and 4 Included with the Heart of Thorns/Path of Fire bundle An existing owner of the associated bundle should receive missing episodes automatically under the new model.
Season 5: The Icebrood Saga Included with End of Dragons An existing End of Dragons owner should receive Season 5 automatically, subject to ArenaNet’s current known issue affecting some accounts.

The Complete Collection includes the first three expansions plus Living World Seasons 3, 4, and 5. Seasons 1 and 2 are free under the announced model, with Season 2 still requiring a level 80 character. Living World seasons are not offered as individual purchases under this model.

Why owning an expansion can unlock older episodes

The expansion relationship is intentional: Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire cover Seasons 3 and 4, while End of Dragons covers Season 5. If an expansion was purchased on the account you are using, the associated Living World access should be delivered as an account entitlement rather than activated through a separate checkout.

Step-by-step fix for a locked or missing episode

  1. Record the exact Story Journal state

Open the locked chapter and capture the season name, episode title, lock icon, and any purchase prompt. Include the character name and account region in your notes. This prevents Support from having to infer which chapter is affected.

  2. Verify the login account

Sign out and confirm the ArenaNet account that owns the expansion or bundle. Check for common mix-ups: a second ArenaNet login, a family member’s account, or a key assigned to a different account. Expansion ownership does not transfer between accounts simply because the same computer or launcher is used.

  3. Check the account’s expansion type

Review the account management page or purchase history and identify whether the account is Free, Core, Heart of Thorns, Path of Fire, End of Dragons, or a later expansion account. The account-type table uses these categories because each provides a different set of access rights. Match that record to the season you are trying to open.

  4. Confirm the Season 2 level requirement

If the missing chapter is in Season 2, make sure the account has at least one level 80 character. The free access rule is account-based but still carries this character-level condition. Leveling a character does not grant Seasons 3–5; those seasons depend on the expansion entitlements listed above.

  5. Exit and relaunch the client

After confirming ownership, completely close the game and launcher, then start them again and revisit the Story Journal. A relaunch is a practical entitlement refresh check, not a guaranteed repair, and ArenaNet does not publish a universal synchronization time. Do not purchase duplicate episodes while waiting for the account state to update.

  6. Check for the Icebrood Saga issue

If you own End of Dragons but Season 5 remains locked, compare your situation with ArenaNet’s current known-issue notice. Some End of Dragons accounts did not receive Icebrood Saga access after the October 14 update. Follow the support notice, keep your ownership evidence, and submit a ticket if the chapter remains unavailable.

  7. Escalate with complete evidence

When the entitlement and account are correct but the lock persists, contact Guild Wars 2 Support. Include the details in the support section below rather than opening several tickets for the same account.

The Icebrood Saga exception

ArenaNet currently acknowledges an issue preventing some players who own End of Dragons from accessing Living World Season 5, The Icebrood Saga, despite the October 14, 2026 acquisition update. The notice says the affected players should automatically receive the missing content once a solution is deployed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This means an End of Dragons owner with a locked Season 5 entry should not assume the expansion purchase is invalid and should not pay for duplicate content. Verify the account, perform the relaunch check, monitor the official notice, and contact Support if the account remains affected or you need the case documented.

“We are aware of an issue that is preventing some players who own End of Dragons from accessing Living World Season 5, The Icebrood Saga, despite the 10/14/2026 updates to Living World season acquisition.”

Refunds for recent Living World purchases

ArenaNet’s October 2026 announcement says qualifying Living World purchases made after September 12, 2026 should receive an automatic gem refund. It also advised contacting Support by October 15, 2026 if the refund or related starter-pack items had not arrived. These are policy dates tied to that announcement; if you are checking a late or unresolved case, confirm the current status with Support and attach the original transaction record.

Why reinstalling usually does not help

A reinstall can repair corrupted local files, but it cannot grant an account license. A locked Story Journal entry is an account-side state, so registry cleaners, PC optimizers, graphics-driver changes, new peripherals, and physical game media are not primary fixes. Use client repair only when you have a separate installation symptom, such as crashes or damaged files, and continue the entitlement checks independently.

Decision checklist

  • Story Journal: Is the chapter locked, or is it playable but failing during progression?
  • Account: Are you signed into the ArenaNet account that owns the relevant expansion or bundle?
  • Coverage: Does the account meet the Season 2 level 80 rule, own the Heart of Thorns/Path of Fire bundle for Seasons 3–4, or own End of Dragons for Season 5?
  • Automatic delivery: Have you fully exited and relaunched after confirming the entitlement?
  • Known issue: Is the missing content Season 5 on an End of Dragons account, matching ArenaNet’s current notice?
  • Evidence: Do you have the lock screenshot, account ownership record, platform, and purchase or refund details?
  • Cost avoidance: Have you avoided repurchasing a season while ArenaNet reconciles the entitlement?

What the current policy means for returning players

Players returning after the October 2026 change may see a different access pattern from the one they remember. A season that was once sold separately may now be supplied through an expansion bundle, while Season 2 may appear free only after the account has a level 80 character. The absence of an old purchase button is therefore not proof that the content was removed; check the current entitlement relationship and the Story Journal state first.

If the account was upgraded through multiple transactions, list each expansion and its date in your Support request. That history helps distinguish a missing automatic unlock from a purchase that was made on another account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate entitlement errors from progression errors

Not every unavailable-looking chapter is a missing license. A lock icon paired with a purchase action points to entitlement. A chapter that offers Play or Continue is already attached to the account, so buying an expansion again will not fix a blocked objective. In that case, read the displayed prerequisite, switch to the character intended to carry the story, and note the exact step that fails.

This distinction also prevents duplicate support requests. Put all locked episodes from the same account in one ticket, but describe each season and episode separately. If one season is playable and another is locked, say so: it helps Support separate a progression issue from a missing entitlement.

Checks to make before contacting Support

Use a short, repeatable sequence rather than making random client changes. First, write down the exact season and episode. Next, confirm the account login and the expansion shown in account management or purchase history. Then verify the Season 2 level 80 condition or the expansion relationship for Seasons 3–5. Fully close and relaunch the game once, and take a new Story Journal screenshot.

Keep the original receipt or key-activation information available. A receipt proves that a transaction occurred, but Support still needs to determine which ArenaNet account received it. If you have more than one login, do not assume that the launcher’s remembered credentials are the account associated with the purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cost and purchase guidance

Under the current model, an old standalone Living World checkout is not the normal solution. Season 2 should not be bought when the account simply lacks a level 80 character, and owners of the relevant expansion should not repurchase Seasons 3, 4, or 5 while an automatic unlock is being reconciled. The practical cost-saving step is to verify ownership first and preserve the transaction evidence.

If you are deciding whether an expansion or the Complete Collection is needed, compare the entitlement relationship rather than looking for a separate season listing. Heart of Thorns/Path of Fire covers Seasons 3 and 4, End of Dragons covers Season 5, and the Complete Collection contains the first three expansions plus Seasons 3, 4, and 5. Season 1 and qualifying Season 2 access follow the free-access rules described above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my Living World episodes missing in Guild Wars 2?

Most often, the current account does not show the required entitlement, or the entitlement has not synchronized after the October 14, 2026 access update. Check the Story Journal lock state, verify the login account and expansion ownership, relaunch once, and contact ArenaNet Support if the lock remains.

I own an expansion, so why is the episode still locked?

The purchase may be attached to another ArenaNet account, the entitlement may not yet have synchronized, or the episode may be part of the current Icebrood Saga known issue. Confirm the account and bundle, save a Story Journal screenshot, and provide the purchase record to Support instead of buying the episode again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I unlock old Living World chapters?

Open the Story Journal and select the chapter. Season 2 is free for an account with a level 80 character; Seasons 3 and 4 are included with the Heart of Thorns/Path of Fire bundle; Season 5 is included with End of Dragons. Existing owners should receive the applicable access automatically.

Do I need to buy Living World again?

Usually no. Living World seasons are no longer offered as individual purchases under the October 2026 model. Verify the associated expansion or the Season 2 level requirement first, and avoid duplicate purchases while ArenaNet checks the entitlement.

Why am I missing Icebrood Saga episodes even though I own End of Dragons?

ArenaNet has acknowledged a current issue affecting some End of Dragons owners who did not receive Season 5 access after the October 14 update. Relaunch the client, check the official notice, and submit a Support ticket if the episodes remain locked; impacted accounts should receive the content automatically once a solution is deployed.

Does leveling a character unlock every Living World season?

No. Having a level 80 character is the condition for free Season 2 access. Seasons 3 and 4 depend on the Heart of Thorns/Path of Fire bundle, and Season 5 depends on End of Dragons.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where do I contact ArenaNet about missing content?

Use Guild Wars 2 Support and submit the ticket through the authenticated account when possible. Name the exact season and episode, identify the owned expansion or bundle, attach the Story Journal screenshot, and include purchase, key, gem, or refund evidence.

Will reinstalling Guild Wars 2 unlock a missing episode?

No. Reinstallation can address damaged local files, but a Story Journal lock is an account entitlement state. Use repair or reinstall only for a separate installation problem, not as a substitute for verifying ownership or contacting Support.

What if my receipt shows the expansion but my account does not?

Do not purchase the expansion again. The receipt may belong to another ArenaNet account or the key may not have been applied to the login you are using. Send Support the receipt, transaction date, account details, and the locked Story Journal entry.

Can I get a refund for a recent Living World purchase?

ArenaNet stated that qualifying Living World purchases made after September 12, 2026 should receive an automatic gem refund. The announcement advised contacting Support by October 15, 2026 if the refund or related starter-pack items were missing; attach the original transaction record when asking about an unresolved case.

The Bottom Line

Start in the Story Journal: a lock icon is an entitlement signal, not proof that your game files are broken. Confirm the correct ArenaNet account, match the season to its current expansion or level requirement, and relaunch once before escalating.

Do not repurchase content while an automatic unlock is pending. Season 2 is free for qualifying level 80 accounts, Seasons 3 and 4 come with the Heart of Thorns/Path of Fire bundle, and Season 5 comes with End of Dragons. If Season 5 is still locked on an End of Dragons account, treat it as the documented Icebrood Saga issue and give ArenaNet Support the screenshot and ownership evidence needed to correct it.
