If your FFmpeg YouTube livestream has video but no sound, first check whether the input contains an audio stream. If it does, inspect the output mapping and make sure -an is not disabling audio. If FFmpeg sends audio but YouTube still reports a problem, use the Live Control Room health message to check the codec, number of audio streams, channels, sample rate, and bitrate.
1. Check whether FFmpeg receives audio
Run your usual FFmpeg command and inspect the log. Under each Input #... line, look for a stream description beginning with Audio:. Check the input that should supply the sound; a different input may be the source in a multi-input command.
- No audio stream listed: FFmpeg cannot map audio that is absent from that input. Check that you opened the intended file or device, selected the correct capture source, and routed audio into it.
- An audio stream is listed: Continue to the output summary and command options. The existence of input audio does not guarantee that FFmpeg sends it to YouTube.
These checks identify where to investigate; without your command, input listing, output log, and YouTube health message, there is no way to determine the specific cause in advance.
2. Check FFmpeg’s output mapping
Read the output stream summary and confirm that it includes the intended audio stream. Look through the full command for -an: FFmpeg documents it as an output option that disables audio recording, including automatic audio selection or mapping. If you use manual mapping, make sure you map the audio from the correct input. FFmpeg documents -map for explicit stream selection in its documentation.

Map the intended stream
If the first audio stream of the first input is the one you want, an illustrative mapping is -map 0:a:0. In a command with multiple inputs, change the input number to match the source containing the audio. Filter graphs can affect which outputs need mapping, so adapt the mapping to your actual command.
For an RTMP or RTMPS output, this schematic command shows explicit video and audio mapping and AAC audio settings:

ffmpeg -i INPUT -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -ar 44100 -b:a 128k -f flv "rtmps://SERVER/STREAM_KEY"
This is an example pattern, not a tested command for every setup. Replace the input, video encoder settings, server URL, and stream key with your actual values. Keep your stream key private. Check the complete command for an output-scoped -an that could suppress audio, and ensure the mapped audio comes from the intended input.
3. Match the audio YouTube expects
YouTube’s live encoder settings list AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. For stereo, YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps. For 5.1 audio, it lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC.

YouTube’s live streaming error messages cover unsupported audio codecs, a missing audio stream, multiple audio streams, incorrect sample rate or bitrate, and too many audio channels. For the channel-count error described there, YouTube specifies mono or stereo (one or two channels). Use the actual Live Control Room message to narrow the check, rather than changing unrelated video settings.
Check the number of audio streams
Make the outgoing stream contain one intended audio stream. YouTube’s error guide flags both no audio stream and multiple audio streams. If the FFmpeg output summary shows more than one, review your mapping and filter outputs to identify why.

Keep audio and video settings in context
YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS guidance also lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video and CBR bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These are stream-level settings rather than fixes for an absent input audio stream; address audio mapping and the specific health message first.

- Start a private or unlisted test using the same source and FFmpeg command you intend to use.
- Listen to the Live Control Room preview and check its stream health messages.
- Verify playback on the test stream, not just the local source or encoder output.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health. Comparing the preview, health messages, and playback helps distinguish a source or encoder issue from an ingestion or playback issue.

5. Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
No Audio: line under the relevant input |
Check the selected file or device, capture source, and audio routing. The input does not expose an audio stream for FFmpeg to map. |
| Input has audio, but output summary does not | Check for output-scoped -an, missing or incorrect -map, a wrong input index, and filter-graph outputs. Explicitly map the intended audio stream. |
| Output summary has audio, but YouTube reports no audio | Read the Live Control Room health error. Check that the outgoing stream has exactly one intended audio stream and that its codec, channels, sample rate, and bitrate match YouTube’s guidance. |
| Audio stream is present but sounds silent | Inspect source levels and routing. If your workflow supports it, listen to a local recording or monitor output. A stream listing alone does not establish that the signal contains audible sound. |
| Audio works locally but not on the live page | Compare local output, Live Control Room preview and health messages, and playback in a test stream before altering an encoder configuration that may already be working. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping as a 24/7 YouTube livestream rather than troubleshoot a local FFmpeg setup, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
