If Microsoft’s “Let’s help you move forward” security check keeps failing, first retry in a regular browser window with cookies and JavaScript enabled. Temporarily turn off ad or script blockers, disconnect a VPN or proxy, and try a different network—then change one factor at a time to find what is preventing the check from completing. If you mean a sign-in loop, Error 400, or a verification code that never arrives, use the separate troubleshooting branch below; those problems are not necessarily CAPTCHA failures.
First identify what is not working
Microsoft uses security checks to help verify that an account action is being made by a person. The relevant repeated-check problem may display “Let’s help you move forward” and return the user to another check instead of letting them continue. Microsoft’s dedicated guidance for that error focuses on browser settings and data, blockers, VPNs or proxies, and the network: Microsoft’s “Let’s help you move forward” troubleshooting.
Before changing settings, match your symptom to the right path:
- The check appears but keeps failing or repeating: follow the steps in the next section.
- No CAPTCHA appears, or the page will not validate it: start with browser blockers, cookies and JavaScript, then test another browser and network.
- Microsoft asks for a code sent by email or text, but it never arrives: use the verification-code branch below. That is a contact-method delivery issue, not the same as a CAPTCHA failing.
- The page returns to the login screen, or shows Error 400: use the matching sign-in branch below rather than repeating CAPTCHA attempts.
The steps Microsoft publishes are troubleshooting options, not a guarantee that the cause is on your device. A shared network can also be a factor: Microsoft may treat activity from a shared office, school, university, or hotel connection as unusual.

Fix a repeated “Let’s help you move forward” check
Work through these steps in order. When possible, change one thing at a time and retry once. That makes it easier to tell whether the issue follows a browser, device, network, or account.
- Leave private or incognito mode. Open a normal browser window and retry the Microsoft page. Microsoft says security checks can depend on browser data used to help verify that a person is real. If the normal window works, private browsing was likely interfering with that data.
- Temporarily pause blockers. Turn off ad blockers, privacy or tracker blockers, and extensions that block scripts. If your router or network security software filters ads or web content, check whether it can be temporarily disabled for a test. Retry the check, then re-enable extensions one at a time to identify a conflict. Do not leave protections disabled unnecessarily.
- Disconnect a VPN or proxy for the test. Retry over your ordinary internet connection. Microsoft identifies VPNs and proxies as possible reasons a security check cannot validate the connection. If you are using a managed work connection, ask your IT administrator before changing required network settings.
- Allow cookies and JavaScript. Check your browser’s site settings and make sure both are enabled, then reload the page. Microsoft Support states: “Security checks require cookies and JavaScript to work correctly.” Microsoft Support
- Test another network. If you are on a shared school, office, university, or hotel Wi-Fi network, try a personal connection. On a phone, turn Wi-Fi off and retry using cellular data. If it works on the second network, the first network or its shared connection may be involved.
- Try a current alternative browser. Microsoft lists Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari as examples. Install available browser updates before testing. If another browser succeeds on the same device and network, compare the original browser’s cookie, script, and extension settings.
- Clear cache and cookies if the problem persists. Stale or corrupted site data can keep the check from completing. Clearing cookies may sign you out of websites, so first make sure you know how to sign back in. After clearing the data, reopen the Microsoft page in a regular window and retry.
- Update and restart. Install browser updates, restart the browser and device, and, if needed, restart your internet connection. Then make one new attempt.
- Pause after repeated failures. Do not keep submitting the check rapidly. Microsoft warns that repeated failed attempts can trigger additional security checks. Stop for a while; when you try again, a different device or network can help isolate the cause. Microsoft’s dedicated article does not promise a specific wait time for this CAPTCHA error.
- Get account-specific help if you remain blocked. Use Microsoft’s sign-in troubleshooting guidance and its official “Let’s help you move forward” guidance. Avoid third-party services that claim to bypass Microsoft’s security check.
Isolate whether the cause is the browser, network, or account
A small, controlled set of tests is more useful than changing several settings at once. Keep the same Microsoft account and page for each attempt, and note whether the check loads, accepts the response, or repeats.

These are diagnostic clues, not proof of a particular cause. If the check fails across browsers and networks, stop cycling through retries and use Microsoft’s account-help route rather than treating it as a local browser fault.

If the page loops back to sign-in
A support page returning to its login screen is a separate sign-in-loop issue. Microsoft documents a cookie and security-zone problem affecting Internet Explorer and Edge. Its advice concerns the support.microsoft.com sign-in loop and older browser security-zone behavior; it is not a general instruction for every CAPTCHA problem.

For that specific loop, review whether microsoft.com, support.microsoft.com and its subdomains, login.live.com, and login.microsoftonline.com are in the trusted-sites list. If an organization requires those entries by policy, Microsoft says the relevant domains should be kept together so cookies can be shared. Follow the details in Microsoft’s support.microsoft.com sign-in troubleshooting article. If your device is managed, check with IT before changing an organization’s settings.
If Microsoft shows Error 400
Error 400 can follow too many sign-in attempts, or stem from an app, browser, device, or network issue. It is not interchangeable with the repeated CAPTCHA message. Microsoft’s Error 400 guidance suggests trying another sign-in method already configured on the account, another device, or another network. If the error occurs in a Microsoft app, try reinstalling its current version.

If a Microsoft verification code does not arrive
A missing email or text code is a delivery or verification-method problem. Avoid requesting codes repeatedly: unusual activity or repeated requests can result in a temporary block. Microsoft’s detailed steps are in its verification-code troubleshooting article.
- Confirm that the email address or phone number shown for delivery is one you can access. Check the email account’s spam or junk folder.
- For a Microsoft account email code, look for a message from an address ending in
@accountprotection.microsoft.com. - If another verification method is already configured, try that method or retry on another network.
- If codes still do not arrive, pause rather than making repeated requests and use Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper and account sign-in guidance. Microsoft says some blocks clear after time; its code guidance advises waiting and avoiding repeated attempts, and notes that a longer wait may be needed if there is no change after 24 hours.
If Microsoft asks you to secure the account
Sometimes the prompt is not a CAPTCHA: Microsoft may ask you to provide contact information for a security check. Enter an alternate email address or phone number you can currently access, retrieve the code sent there, and verify it. Microsoft says the alternate contact does not have to belong to the account holder; what matters is that you can receive its code. See Microsoft’s “Help us secure your account” instructions.

For a work or school account
The dedicated repeated-check guidance is for Microsoft accounts. Work and school identities are managed by an organization and can have different policies or sign-in controls. If ordinary browser and network troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, contact your organization’s IT administrator. Microsoft also explains how to check whether an email address is a Microsoft account.
