Metal Gear Solid: Raiden is usually a reference to Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, the Raiden-led PC action game released on Steam on January 9, 2014. The most reliable fix order is to update and verify the Steam installation, check the game’s Windows save path and C: drive, stop changing resolution during missions or cutscenes, then stabilize frame pacing. Only after those low-risk checks should you add Steam006’s PC Fix or DXVK, and you should back up the original files before changing DLLs.
A missing or inaccessible C: drive/Documents location is a documented crash cause, while Konami’s March 7, 2014 patch addressed resolution-change crashes, the no-C-drive crash, and a below-60-FPS Armstrong repair-nanopaste/final-QTE bug. Modern Windows, drivers, overlays and hardware can introduce additional variables, so no single workaround is guaranteed for every computer.

Identify the game and the failure you are seeing
The PC title covered here is Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Konami published it, with PlatinumGames and Kojima Productions credited as developers. It is distributed on Steam, and the original PC release includes graphics settings that can be changed from the game configuration.
Use the symptom that best matches your problem before changing anything:
#1 Best Overall
- Nothing happens or a white window appears and closes: treat this as a launch failure. A Steam community report describes the white-window symptom and user attempts to start windowed or with a safe option; that is anecdotal evidence, not proof of a universal fix.
- The game crashes after you alter resolution: avoid changing resolution while a mission, cutscene or other sensitive sequence is active. Konami explicitly patched this class of crash.
- The game reports a C-drive, save or Documents-related error: check the Windows system drive and the Documents location before reinstalling.
- The game starts but feels uneven: distinguish a low average frame rate from inconsistent frame pacing. A stable frame cap and controlled refresh-rate testing are more useful than simply selecting the highest possible frame rate.
- A late-game Armstrong repair-nanopaste or final-QTE sequence behaves incorrectly: make sure the official patch is installed and avoid running below 60 FPS for that sequence.
Keeping the symptom separate prevents an invasive graphics wrapper from being used to solve a save-path problem, or a save-path change from being used to solve stutter.
Check the official requirements and installation first
The Steam/KONAMI requirements published for the 2014 release are modest by current standards, but meeting them does not eliminate compatibility problems. They are useful for confirming that the installation is targeting a supported DirectX 9-era configuration.
| Specification | Minimum (Steam/KONAMI, 2014) | Recommended (Steam/KONAMI, 2014) |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Intel Core i5-2400 | Intel Core i7-3770 |
| Memory | 2 GB RAM | 4 GB RAM |
| Graphics | Nvidia GeForce GTS 450 | Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 |
| DirectX | DirectX 9.0c | DirectX 9.0c |
| Storage | 25 GB | 25 GB |
These are historical publisher requirements, not a guarantee that every current Windows configuration will behave identically. Before trying a mod or compatibility layer, let Steam finish any pending update. Then run the built-in verification:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Steam and launch the game without additional launchers or DLL replacements.
Verification is a low-risk first step. It can restore a damaged or missing original file, but it will not repair a missing Windows C: drive, a redirected Documents folder that the game cannot access, or a third-party overlay conflict.
Fix a white screen or immediate close at launch
Try an unmodified, windowed launch
If a white window appears and then disappears, remove any mods or replacement DLLs temporarily and try a windowed or safe launch option available through your current Steam configuration. The windowed attempt is a practical diagnostic: it can show whether the failure occurs before the game creates a normal fullscreen display surface. Reports of this working are community observations, so treat the result as a test rather than an official guarantee.
Rank #2
- Rising's stealth elements will emphasize Raiden's considerable speed and agility through what Matsuyama describes as "hunting stealth."
- Gameplay will focus on two key elements: swordfighting, and a style of stealth that is more fast-paced and action-oriented.
- "Cutting" entails sophisticated swordplay that lets players engage in third person melee combat, as well as precisely slash enemies and objects "at will" along a geometrical plane using a "free slicing" mode.
Do not stack several launch options at once. Test one change, record whether the process reaches the title screen, and then undo the change before testing another. If the unmodified game still closes, continue with the file, save-path and patch checks rather than repeatedly changing display options.
Check whether Windows security or permissions blocked a file
Verification may report a file that could not be replaced if Steam lacks permission to write to the installation directory. Close the game and other launchers, allow Steam to complete the repair, and avoid manually deleting files from the folder. If a security product quarantined a game file, restore it only when you can confirm that the file belongs to the verified installation; do not download replacement executables from an unknown mirror.
Do not assume a white window proves a graphics-card failure
The same symptom can arise before rendering is fully initialized, including when the game cannot reach its save location or when a legacy display mode is rejected. Establish that the C: drive and Documents path are usable before escalating to a graphics translation layer.
Repair the C: drive and Documents save-path problem
PCGamingWiki documents that the game uses a fixed Windows path and may crash when the C: drive or the Documents folder is missing or inaccessible. This can happen on a machine that boots from another drive, after a corporate policy redirects Documents to a network location, or when a removable or encrypted location is unavailable at launch.
- Confirm that Windows currently exposes a readable C: drive. Open File Explorer and make sure the drive is present and you can create or read a test folder in a location where your account has permission.
- Open your Windows Documents folder and confirm that it resolves locally or to a reachable redirected location. If it points to an offline network or removable drive, restore access before launching the game.
- Make sure the account running Steam can read and write the Documents location. A read-only, disconnected or policy-blocked folder can look like a game crash.
- Launch the game once with the original installation and allow it to create its normal save structure. Do not move or rename that structure while testing.
- If the game reaches the menu after the path is available, test saving and loading before adding any fix.
Konami’s March 7, 2014 patch states that it fixed the crash that occurred when no “C Drive” was found. The same announcement qualifies Steam Cloud behavior: synchronization still requires a C drive. Therefore, installing the patch does not make an absent C: drive a supported Steam Cloud configuration.
A path check is preferable to creating symbolic links or relocating files as a first response. Those changes can make later troubleshooting ambiguous and may leave Steam Cloud pointing at a location the game cannot use.

The March 7, 2014 Konami update addressed three issues relevant to current troubleshooting:
- A crash when resolution was adjusted at certain points in the game.
- A crash when no C drive was found.
- An Armstrong repair-nanopaste and final-QTE problem when the frame rate was below 60 FPS.
Steam should deliver the applicable update automatically. After Steam reports that the installation is current, verify the files as described above so a partial update is not mistaken for a display problem.
Set resolution before a mission or cutscene
Choose the target resolution from the game’s configuration before starting a mission or entering a cutscene. Do not use repeated in-game resolution changes as a way to probe a crash. If you need to test another mode, return to the menu, apply one change, restart the game if necessary, and then begin the mission.
Keep the late-game sequence at or above 60 FPS
The patch notes specifically connect the Armstrong repair-nanopaste/final-QTE behavior to frame rates below 60 FPS. This is a sequence-specific compatibility requirement, not a promise that the entire game must run at 60 FPS on every display. If that event fails, first use a stable cap that holds 60 FPS during the sequence, then retest with overlays and extra wrappers disabled.

Reduce stutter and frame-pacing spikes
Stutter is a timing problem: a game can report a high average frame rate while delivering frames in uneven bursts. Start with a stable cap rather than an unrestricted frame rate. Choose a cap your system can hold consistently at the display’s refresh rate or a clean divisor of it, then test the same scene for several minutes.
A practical frame-pacing test
- Return to the unmodified game and disable nonessential overlays for the test session.
- Select a fixed display mode and resolution before loading a mission.
- Apply a conservative frame cap that your hardware can sustain without frequent dips.
- Repeat the same movement or combat section and watch for regular hitching rather than judging from one busy effect.
- If pacing improves, raise the cap in small steps; if it worsens, return to the last stable value.
PCGamingWiki documents refresh-rate behavior and lists DXVK as an optional translation layer. Steam006’s PC Fix includes an adjustable FPS-cap control. These are separate interventions: first establish whether a cap alone changes the symptom, then decide whether a wrapper is justified.
Test overlays and capture tools separately
Disable overlays from Steam, GPU utilities, recording software and chat clients one at a time. A legacy DirectX 9 title can react differently when several programs hook the same rendering path. Keep a note of which overlay was disabled and restore the others after the test so you know which change mattered.
Do not use an unlimited cap to solve a timing bug
Running without a cap can make frame delivery more variable, especially when the game’s simulation and display refresh are not synchronized. It can also undermine the 60-FPS condition relevant to the Armstrong sequence by allowing short dips that are hard to notice in an average counter.
Use Steam006 PC Fix when the basics do not solve the problem
Steam006’s PC Fix is a third-party compatibility fix with controls that target several known limitations. It is most appropriate after the official installation, save-path and display checks have been completed. The release instructions say to unpack its files into the game folder and configure Metal_Gear_Rising_Revengeance_PCFix.ini.
Best Value
- Used Book in Good Condition
Features relevant to troubleshooting
- Custom resolutions: useful when the built-in configuration does not expose the mode your display requires.
- FPS-cap control: lets you test a stable cap without relying on an external limiter.
- Startup-logo skipping: shortens repeated launch tests but does not itself repair a crash.
- Custom save folders: can help when the default location is unsuitable, provided you understand the difference between the game’s path and Steam Cloud requirements.
- Increased heap and file limits: addresses legacy allocation limits that may appear as instability in heavily modified or high-resolution configurations.
Install it reversibly
- Close the game and Steam’s running game process.
- Back up the entire original game folder, or at minimum every file that the fix will replace.
- Unpack the PC Fix files into the game’s executable directory as directed by the release package.
- Open
Metal_Gear_Rising_Revengeance_PCFix.iniin a plain-text editor and change only the setting you are testing. - Launch the game, reproduce the original symptom, and record the result.
- If the result is worse, restore the backup or remove the added files, then verify the Steam installation again.
Steam and GOG installations have different PC Fix instructions. Follow the directions for your platform and build rather than copying a Steam arrangement into a GOG directory. An INI edit is generally easier to undo than a DLL replacement, so test configuration changes before adding a translation layer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Try DXVK only as an advanced compatibility step
DXVK is an optional DirectX-to-Vulkan translation layer documented by PCGamingWiki for this game. It can change how the legacy DirectX 9 renderer interacts with a modern driver, but it is not a universal crash cure. Use it only after you have a verified, backed-up installation and a reproducible reason to test a different rendering path.
Basic DXVK arrangement
- Download a DXVK release from a trusted, official distribution source and keep the archive for rollback.
- Use the x32 build for this 32-bit game.
- Copy the 32-bit
d3d9.dllinto the directory containing the game executable, as documented for the title. - Launch once and test the same scene or startup symptom. Do not change several graphics settings at the same time.
- If the game fails to start, remove the added DLL and restore the original installation before trying another configuration.
PCGamingWiki also documents an optional Ultimate ASI Loader arrangement for combining DXVK with Steam006’s fix. That is a more complex chain because multiple components must load in the correct order. Keep separate backups, confirm that each component matches the game’s architecture, and introduce only one new file set per test.

When to stop
If DXVK removes one symptom but creates another—such as a new startup failure, visual corruption or unstable input—revert it. The goal is a repeatable improvement, not the largest number of compatibility files in the folder.
Choose the least invasive fix for your symptom
| Approach | Best target | Invasiveness | How easy it is to undo | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam update and file verification | Missing or damaged installation files | Low | Very easy; Steam restores the official files | Does not repair an unavailable C: drive or Documents path |
| C: drive and Documents check | Launch crashes, save errors and C-drive messages | Low | Easy; restore the Windows path or its availability | Steam Cloud synchronization still requires a C drive |
| Windowed or safe launch test | White window that immediately closes | Low | Easy; remove the launch option | Community-reported diagnostic, not an official guaranteed fix |
| Stable FPS cap and overlay testing | Stutter, uneven frame pacing and the below-60-FPS sequence bug | Low | Easy; restore the previous cap or overlay settings | Use a cap the system can sustain consistently |
| Steam006 PC Fix | Custom resolution, cap control, save-folder and legacy-limit issues | Moderate | Good if the original folder is backed up; INI edits are reversible | Steam and GOG instructions differ |
| DXVK | Advanced rendering compatibility or frame-pacing testing | Higher; adds a DLL | Restore the original folder and remove the DLL | Use the 32-bit build and treat it as optional |
This order keeps platform settings and path checks ahead of modifications to executable files. It also makes it clear which change helped: launch and save failures are not the same target as frame pacing or resolution handling.
Recovery checklist after a failed tweak
- Close the game and make sure its process is no longer running.
- Remove only the files or launch options introduced by the last test.
- Restore the backed-up original DLLs or game folder if a wrapper was added.
- Run Steam’s Verify integrity of game files action.
- Recheck that the C: drive and Documents location are available to the Windows account running Steam.
- Retest at one fixed resolution with overlays disabled and no additional fix loaded.
- Write down the exact symptom, the last change made and whether the game reached the title screen. That record prevents circular testing.
If the unmodified, verified game still crashes, the remaining cause may involve a current Windows build, graphics driver, overlay, permissions policy or hardware-specific interaction not covered by the documented fixes. At that point, preserve the clean baseline and change one environmental variable at a time rather than adding multiple wrappers.
Quick Recap
What not to do
- Do not delete the save folder as a first response; an inaccessible path is different from corrupted save data, and deleting files can destroy progress.
- Do not copy a 64-bit DXVK DLL into this 32-bit game’s folder.
- Do not combine Steam006, DXVK and an ASI loader before testing each component independently.
- Do not change resolution repeatedly inside a mission or cutscene when investigating a crash that the official patch specifically addressed.
- Do not assume a higher frame-rate counter means smoother delivery; use a stable cap and repeatable scene.
- Do not use a GOG-specific PC Fix procedure on a Steam installation, or vice versa.
Fast decision path
- Game will not start: update Steam, verify files, remove modifications and try one windowed or safe launch test.
- White window closes: check the C: drive and Documents path, then retest the verified installation before adding a wrapper.
- Crash after changing resolution: set the resolution at the menu, restart if needed, and avoid changing it during a mission or cutscene.
- C-drive or save error: restore access to C: and the Windows Documents location; remember that Steam Cloud still needs C:.
- Stutter: disable overlays, apply a sustainable FPS cap and test the same scene.
- Persistent legacy-limit or custom-resolution problem: back up the folder and test Steam006 PC Fix with one INI change at a time.
- Still unresolved: test DXVK’s 32-bit
d3d9.dllas a reversible advanced experiment, keeping the clean installation available for rollback.
