If Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will not update, first close the game, connect the Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 to the internet, and use HOME Menu → highlight Mario Kart 8 Deluxe → + or − → Software Update → Via the Internet. If that fails, check free system or microSD storage, restart the console, install any pending system update, check for corrupt data, and redownload the game when Nintendo’s troubleshooting sequence calls for it. Booster Course Pass access has an additional Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack requirement.
What the update failure usually means
An update that will not download and an update that downloads but will not install are different problems. A stalled download is commonly related to the game still running, the console’s network connection, or a queue that needs a restart. An installation failure more often points to insufficient storage, damaged data, a system-software issue, or a microSD card problem.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe must be on the current version for online features, and players joining the same multiplayer session need matching versions. The console can obtain updates automatically while it is online, but you can also start the process manually without launching the game.

Force a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe update manually
Use this path when automatic updating has not started, when you want to verify the installed version, or when the game reports that an update is required for online play.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
- Incredible speeds in a microSD card officially licensed for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo OLED, and Nintendo Switch Lite systems
- Spend less time waiting and more time playing with read speeds up to 100MB/s(1) and write speeds up to 90MB/s(1).
- Instantly add up to 256GB (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
- Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.
- From the HOME Menu, connect the Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 to the internet. If you are unsure that the connection is working, open the console’s internet settings and run a connection test.
- Highlight the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe icon without starting the game.
- Press the + or − button to open the software options.
- Choose Software Update.
- Select Via the Internet. Leave the console connected while it checks for and downloads available data.
Nintendo states that an update downloads and installs automatically when the system is connected to the internet. Manual checking is therefore a way to trigger the same update process, not a separate update file or a special “force” mode. If the console says the software is already up to date, the problem is probably not a missing base-game update; continue with the symptom-specific checks below.
Fix a download that is stuck or repeatedly pauses
Close Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and other software
Some games and software pause downloads while they are being played. If Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is open, press the HOME button, highlight the game, press X, and choose Close. Close other running software as well so the update queue can use the connection without an active game session.
Check the download status from your user page
- Press HOME and open the user page from the user icon at the upper-left.
- Choose User Settings.
- Select Update Download Progress.
- Look for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or its queued update and allow the process to continue.
If progress stays unchanged after the game and other software are closed, restart the console. A restart clears a stalled transfer state and makes the system reconnect to the network. After the console starts, wait for it to reconnect, then repeat the manual update path rather than launching the game immediately.
Run a connection test before repeating the update
A failed or unstable connection can prevent the update from starting even when the console appears connected. Run the Switch internet connection test and note whether it reports a successful connection. If the test fails, resolve the console’s network connection first; repeatedly retrying the game update cannot repair a failed connection.

Free enough storage for the update
Nintendo requires enough free space in either system memory or the microSD card to download update data. The required amount can vary with the update, and the support guidance does not establish a universal download-size figure. Check both possible storage locations instead of assuming that an inserted microSD card is being used.
Check where the game and free space are located
Open System Settings from HOME and review Data Management. The storage screens show available space in system memory and on the microSD card, along with which software occupies it. Keep sufficient room for the update and the temporary space needed while the console installs it.
What to remove when space is tight
- Archive or delete software you no longer use from Data Management. Verify the title before confirming any deletion.
- Move captures to another location or remove unneeded screenshots and videos if they are consuming the available space.
- If the microSD card is full, free space there or choose a compatible, higher-capacity replacement card.
Deleting software or downloadable content is different from deleting save data. Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance states that deleting and redownloading software or DLC does not delete the game’s save data. Still, read the confirmation screen carefully so you do not choose a save-data deletion option by mistake.
Recover from an installation failure or corrupt data
When the download completes but installation fails, follow Nintendo’s escalation order. Each step moves from a low-impact reset to a more substantial redownload.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
1. Restart the console
Hold the POWER button, choose Power Options, and select Restart. Once the HOME Menu returns and the network reconnects, run the manual update path again. A restart does not remove the game, downloadable content, or save data.
2. Install any pending system update
Open System Settings → System → System Update and install an available console update. The game update and the system software are separate, so a current game cannot compensate for a console that is waiting for its own required update. Restart after the system update finishes, then retry Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
3. Check for corrupt data
- Open System Settings from HOME.
- Choose Data Management.
- Select Manage Software.
- Choose Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
- Select Check for Corrupt Data and let the console complete the check.
If the check finds a problem, follow the on-screen instruction to redownload the affected software. If it finds nothing but installation still fails, continue to the redownload step rather than repeatedly attempting the same damaged transfer.

From the software-management screen, delete the installed software or DLC as directed by Nintendo’s troubleshooting sequence, then redownload it from the Nintendo eShop using the Nintendo Account that owns it. Deleting and redownloading software or downloadable content does not delete the game’s save data. The download still requires a working internet connection and enough free space.

5. Test the microSD card separately
A problematic microSD card can cause an otherwise successful download to fail during installation. Nintendo’s sequence for a title using a microSD card is to format the card, replace it, or remove it and download directly to system memory. Formatting erases the card, so copy any data you need before confirming that operation and make sure you understand which content can be redownloaded from your account.
For a diagnostic test with the least ambiguity, power off the console, remove the microSD card, start the Switch, and redownload Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to system memory. If the installation succeeds without the card, the card or its file system is implicated. A compatible replacement microSD card adds storage, but it is not a guaranteed fix for network failures.
When the Booster Course Pass will not appear or download
Booster Course Pass issues can look like a failed game update even when the base game is current. The console must be online so it can verify entitlement, and the selected user must have an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership for access through that membership.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Verify the selected user and membership
- Start the console with the user profile that is intended to play the content.
- Confirm that this user is covered by an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, rather than a standard Nintendo Switch Online plan.
- Connect the console to the internet and launch Mario Kart 8 Deluxe only after the connection test succeeds.
If you own the content separately, use the Nintendo Account that purchased it when checking the eShop. If access is supplied through the Expansion Pack, the membership check is the relevant entitlement check. Changing users can therefore change whether the courses appear available.

Redownload DLC without deleting save data
If the entitlement is correct but the courses are missing or the DLC installation fails, delete and redownload the Booster Course Pass software from the eShop or the console’s data-management screen. Nintendo says that deleting and redownloading DLC does not delete save data. Keep the console online until the download and installation finish.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Physical game card versus downloaded copy
The update process applies to both formats, but the storage and recovery details differ. A physical game card still receives update data on the console; the card is not a substitute for free system or microSD storage.
| Copy type | Where update data is stored | Important recovery detail |
|---|---|---|
| Physical game card | System memory or the microSD card | If you delete update data, the game must be updated again before online play. |
| Digital download | System memory or the microSD card, depending on the console’s data location | Delete and redownload the software through the owning Nintendo Account; save data remains. |
For a physical card, insert the card before starting the manual update. If update data was removed during troubleshooting, allow the full update to download again before testing multiplayer.
Use the remedy that matches the failure
| Failure condition | Action sequence | Storage location to test | What is preserved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic update never begins | Close the game, run the manual internet update path, and check the connection. | Current location first | All saves and installed content |
| Progress stops while the game is open | Close running software, inspect Update Download Progress, then restart if needed. | Current location | All saves and installed content |
| Storage warning | Review Data Management and free space in system memory or on the microSD card. | Whichever location is full | Save data, provided you do not select a save-data deletion option |
| Corrupt-data message | Run Check for Corrupt Data; redownload when instructed. | Current location, then system memory if necessary | Save data during software/DLC deletion and redownload |
| Failure only with microSD installed | Format, replace, or remove the card and download to system memory. | System memory for the isolation test | Cloud or account-redownloadable software; back up anything on the card before formatting |
| Booster Course Pass unavailable | Verify internet access and the selected user’s Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, then redownload DLC if needed. | Current location | Save data when DLC is deleted and redownloaded |
After the update: confirm the version before playing online
Start Mario Kart 8 Deluxe after the update finishes and allow the title screen to load completely. If the console still reports that an update is required, return to the HOME Menu and repeat Software Update → Via the Internet rather than assuming the previous attempt completed. Online features require the current game version, and every player in a multiplayer session needs a matching version. A friend who has not installed the same update can therefore be unable to join until that console updates.
For a physical copy, remember that deleting update data during troubleshooting means the title needs to download its update again. For a digital copy, confirm that the Nintendo Account used for the redownload is the account that owns the software.
Prevent the same update problem next time
- Leave the console connected to a reliable internet connection when you expect automatic updating.
- Close games before checking a large download; running software can pause downloads.
- Keep usable space available in the storage location where Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is installed.
- Install console system updates instead of postponing them indefinitely.
- If an installation repeatedly fails from a microSD card, test system memory before buying another accessory.
- For Booster Course Pass access through a membership, keep the correct user profile selected and maintain an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
When to stop repeating the same steps
If a connection test succeeds, the console has free space, the system software is current, corrupt-data checking finds no issue, and the game still cannot install after a redownload to system memory, the remaining fault is not explained by the ordinary update sequence. Record the exact on-screen error, whether the copy is physical or digital, and whether the failure occurs with the microSD card removed. Those details distinguish a network problem from storage media or account-entitlement trouble when contacting Nintendo Support.
