Update Maldhalla before changing local settings. The October 2026 patches address DirectInput menu failures, controller focus, menu selection, vibration, and benchmark-window input. If you still see a black screen, the v0.7.5 playtest patch specifically fixed crashes when many enemies spawned and in low-spec mode. After updating, use Steam’s detection, calibration, configuration, Overlay, device-isolation, driver, and relaunch checks in that order.
Start with the fixes already shipped
Maldhalla’s recent patches matter more than generic PC troubleshooting because several symptoms were confirmed game defects. Let Steam finish every Maldhalla update, then restart the Steam client before testing again. The relevant notes are:

If your symptom matches one of these notes, installing the corresponding current build is the highest-value step. A driver update, file check, or replacement controller cannot substitute for a game update that contains the actual fix.
Match the symptom to the shortest troubleshooting route

1. Update Maldhalla, Steam, Windows, and hardware drivers
Install the game updates
- Open Steam and wait for Maldhalla’s download to complete. Do not launch while an update is queued or paused.
- Close Maldhalla completely. If Steam still shows the game as running, exit that session before testing.
- Restart Steam so the client reloads its controller and Overlay components.
- Launch Maldhalla with the controller already connected if controller input is part of the problem.
Use the patch dates as a diagnostic boundary. A DirectInput menu problem reported before 17 October 2026 may be expected to behave differently after 1.0.2. Focus, menu-skipping, first-10-second input, and vibration symptoms should be retested on the 18 October updates before you change mappings or hardware.

Bring the operating system and drivers current
Steam’s client-troubleshooting sequence includes updating the operating system and hardware drivers. Apply pending operating-system updates and the current driver for the graphics hardware and the controller or its USB interface, then restart the computer. These steps address configuration and client conflicts; they are not a guarantee that every Maldhalla crash is a driver fault.
2. Fix a crash or black screen
When enemies trigger the black screen
The v0.7.5 Maldhalla Playtest note names a “crash causing black screen when many enemies spawn.” If the screen goes black at a repeatable high-enemy moment, first confirm that the game is on a build newer than the 28 February 2026 playtest patch. Retest the same encounter after updating. The note supports the patch as the remedy for that known cause; it does not establish how often the crash occurs or prove that every black screen has the same cause.
When low-spec mode triggers it
The same v0.7.5 note names a separate “crash causing black screen in low-spec mode.” Confirm the current build, then reproduce the issue with low-spec mode enabled. If the symptom disappears after updating, the behavior was consistent with the documented game defect. If it remains, continue with Steam’s client-level checks rather than assuming that changing another graphics option will fix it.
Remove input-device conflicts before relaunching
- Exit Maldhalla.
- Disconnect non-essential external input devices, leaving only the keyboard, mouse, and the controller you are testing.
- Restart Steam. Steam explains that external input devices require specific drivers that can interfere with Steam.
- Launch Maldhalla again and test with the same scene or menu.
Disconnecting devices is an isolation test, not a permanent requirement. If the crash stops, reconnect devices one at a time on later launches to identify the conflicting device or driver. If it continues, keep the known Maldhalla patch fixes in mind rather than treating the device test as proof of a hardware cause.

Use driver and operating-system updates as diagnostics
Install pending updates for the operating system and hardware, reboot, and repeat the test. A successful retest indicates that the local software stack changed; it does not demonstrate that a particular driver update fixed Maldhalla. Do not describe this sequence as a guaranteed repair.
3. Restore controller detection in Steam
Check whether Steam sees the device
- Connect only the controller being tested, preferably directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub.
- Open Steam’s Controller settings and inspect the detected-controllers list.
- If the controller is absent, disconnect it, restart Steam, reconnect it, and check the list again.
- If it remains absent, update the operating system and relevant hardware drivers, then repeat the detection check.
The Steam workflow separates detection from game configuration. Maldhalla cannot receive input from a device that Steam does not enumerate, so do not spend time editing in-game mappings until detection succeeds.
Calibrate in Steam Big Picture controller settings
When Steam detects the controller, open Steam Big Picture controller settings and run its calibration procedure. Calibration gives Steam a baseline for stick centers, ranges, and button responses. Complete the prompts exactly, save the result, and return to the detected-controller view. If calibration fails, reconnect the controller and remove other input devices before trying again.
Try another configuration
In Steam’s controller configuration area, test another available configuration, including a community configuration when one is offered. This is an input-mapping test: it can reveal that the device works while the current layout is wrong. Record which configuration you tested so you can return to a known working layout instead of changing several variables at once.

Keep the Steam Overlay enabled
Steam says the Overlay is vital to Steam Controller functionality. Ensure the Overlay is enabled for Steam and for Maldhalla, then relaunch the game. If the Overlay does not appear during a test, treat that as a separate Steam-client problem and resolve it before judging a controller configuration.
Relaunch with the controller already connected
Close Maldhalla, leave the verified controller connected, and launch the game again. Hot-plugging can produce a different initialization path from starting with the device present, so test both only after the basic detection and calibration checks are complete.
4. Fix Maldhalla menu and DirectInput problems
DirectInput cannot select menus
Version 1.0.2 specifically fixed DirectInput controllers on Steam that could not use menus including music selection and Relic Recipes. Update before changing the Steam layout. After launching, test those menus with the controller mode that previously failed. If the menus now work, leave the configuration stable and avoid adding extra remapping layers.

Menu focus is invisible, skips items, or disappears
The 1.0.4 notes improve controller focus, and the Day 3 note lists fixes for menus skipping items or losing focus. Test with the latest build and the Steam Overlay enabled. Move through several menu entries, open and close the benchmark-results window, and verify both controller and keyboard closure. If focus still disappears, capture the exact menu, input mode, and whether the issue appears immediately or after another window opens; those details distinguish a focus symptom from a detection failure.

Buttons are misread during the first 10 seconds
The Day 3 note identifies a DirectInput problem in which buttons could be misread for the first 10 seconds. On the current build, wait through the opening period and test again rather than repeatedly pressing buttons while initialization is occurring. If the problem persists beyond that period, return to Steam detection, calibration, and configuration checks.
Vibration is absent or stops late
Version 1.0.2 added controller vibration, while the Day 3 note fixes Steam Input vibration stopping late. Confirm the game is updated, keep the intended input mode consistent during the test, and trigger a known vibration event. A missing vibration signal alone does not prove that button or menu input is broken; check detection and calibration separately.

A wired USB gamepad is a reasonable diagnostic replacement when Steam cannot detect the current device, calibration fails, or the same input failure remains after trying another configuration. Wired connection removes wireless pairing and battery variables, making the test easier to interpret. Steam’s guidance supports the detection, calibration, and configuration rationale; it does not identify a Maldhalla-specific controller model.

- Disconnect the original controller and other non-essential input devices.
- Connect the wired USB gamepad.
- Confirm it appears in Steam’s detected-controllers list.
- Calibrate it in Steam Big Picture controller settings.
- Enable the Steam Overlay, launch Maldhalla, and test the previously failing menu or scene.
If the replacement works, the result points toward the original controller, its connection, or its driver, but it is not a guaranteed software fix. If the replacement fails in the same way, the common Steam or Maldhalla path remains the stronger suspect. Keep the replacement only if it solves a practical hardware need; otherwise, use it as a controlled comparison.

6. A clean test order that avoids chasing symptoms
- Write down the exact symptom: launch crash, black screen when enemies spawn, low-spec black screen, missing detection, menu navigation failure, focus loss, startup button misread, or vibration behavior.
- Install the latest Maldhalla patch and restart Steam.
- Update the operating system and hardware drivers, then reboot.
- Disconnect non-essential external input devices.
- Verify Steam detection and run controller calibration.
- Try one alternate Steam configuration if the controller is detected.
- Confirm the Steam Overlay is enabled.
- Relaunch Maldhalla with the tested controller connected.
- Reproduce the original scene or menu, changing only one variable at a time.
- If detection or calibration still fails, repeat the test with a wired USB gamepad.
This order prevents a configuration change from hiding whether a dated game patch solved the original defect. Keep a short record of the build, input mode, connected devices, and exact reproduction step; that record is more useful than saying only that the game “crashes sometimes.”
When the standard steps do not solve it
The available Steam guidance supports device isolation, operating-system and driver updates, controller detection, calibration, alternate configurations, Overlay verification, and relaunch checks. No independently verified Maldhalla support or log-upload procedure is established here, so do not invent a folder path, command, or submission form. Likewise, no published statistic establishes Maldhalla’s crash frequency, black-screen prevalence, or controller-failure rate.
If the issue remains after the full sequence, preserve the precise reproduction details: Maldhalla patch number, whether the controller uses DirectInput or Steam Input, whether Steam detects and calibrates it, which menu or encounter fails, and whether removing other devices changes the result. Those facts identify whether the next investigation should focus on the game build, Steam configuration, or a particular device.
