If your pistol feels weak in Valor Mortis, the usual problem is not a broken weapon. The pistol is balanced as a weak-point, posture and status-effect sidearm rather than a center-mass damage gun. It starts at 30 damage per shot, reaches 60 damage at level 10, carries five rounds and takes four seconds to reload. Aim at glowing weak points, stay within its effective range, and build around Tactical Reload, Resourcefulness or a posture alternative, then add Ignite explosions when you want real burst damage.
What the pistol is designed to do
The pistol has the lowest listed per-shot damage among the firearms in the 2026 weapon data. MetaBot.GG describes it as a utility sidearm: its value comes from accurate weak-point hits, posture pressure, special ammunition and combo effects, not from sustained body-shot damage.
The developer’s intended combat loop is straightforward: swords break posture, guns hit weak points, weak-point hits refill nephtoglobin (nephto), and kills often drop ammunition. The developer also identifies the glowing red-orange structures on enemies as “lambent blisters,” which are the targets your gun is meant to hit. A center-mass shot can still deal damage, but it bypasses the pistol’s strongest advantages.

Those numbers explain the common experience of emptying a magazine into an enemy and seeing disappointing results. Five low-damage shots, a long base reload and severe falloff produce poor body-shot DPS even before target resistance or missed weak points are considered.

The level-10 figure is double the starting damage, but 60 is still a modest single-hit number compared with what a melee punish or a status detonation can do. Think of the level increase as making each accurate opportunity more valuable, not as turning the pistol into a rapid-fire primary weapon. The weapon improves most when every shot also advances a posture, ammunition or Ignite loop.
Check these causes before changing your build
You are hitting the body instead of a weak point
Weak-point hits are the pistol’s primary damage and resource mechanic. Aim down sights at the glowing red-orange weak points rather than the largest visible section of an enemy. A body shot may look accurate while still giving up the damage, posture and nephtoglobin value that make the sidearm useful.
You are outside effective range
Keep pistol engagements inside 20 metres when possible. The cited weapon data reports full damage to 20 metres and damage reduced to 10% by 35 metres. If an enemy is farther away, close the distance or switch to a role that does not depend on pistol damage. Do not judge a close-range build by shots fired across a large arena.

You are treating the pistol as a replacement for melee
The pistol pressures weak points and posture; the sword supplies the main punish after a posture break. Use ranged shots to create an opening, then move in for the melee hit or finisher instead of trying to win every exchange with five pistol rounds.
You are firing without a reload plan
A four-second reload is a serious combat cost. A build that improves only the displayed shot number can still feel weak if you spend most of the encounter waiting for ammunition. Choose whether you want amplified shots, sustained ammunition, or a posture-focused loop before selecting ambers and upgrades.
You are judging the wrong success indicator
A posture build can look underpowered when you watch only the enemy health bar. The pistol may be doing its job by pushing the posture meter toward a break, restoring nephtoglobin through weak-point hits or setting up a Saber punish. Likewise, a status build may show ordinary numbers until the prepared shot consumes Ignite. Judge the complete sequence, not one unprepared body shot.
Build the pistol for direct damage
For a dedicated damage route, the recommended progression is Resourcefulness at level 5, Ingenious Engineering at level 8 and Tactical Reload at level 10. These choices address ammunition, reload downtime and burst damage in that order.

This route is strongest when you can reliably combine a pistol shot with a Saber hit. Resourcefulness is not a passive damage increase; it is a loop-enabling upgrade. You gain back a round only after completing the shot-then-Saber sequence, so do not expect it to refill ammunition while you remain at range.
Ingenious Engineering requires a deliberate magazine rhythm. With only three rounds, firing all three and then reloading can be faster overall than waiting through the base reload, but every missed shot removes a larger share of the magazine. Fire only when you have a weak point, a posture opportunity or a prepared status target. If three rounds feel too restrictive, the alternative magazine choice may produce better real-world results even if the reload takes longer.
Tactical Reload is also a timing upgrade rather than a permanent multiplier. A shot fired before the reload is complete is an ordinary shot. Build the habit of emptying or preserving the magazine, starting the full reload in a safe moment, and reserving the first post-reload trigger pull for the target that matters most.
When to choose the posture alternative
If your build is centered on parries and posture breaks, Ruthlessness can replace Resourcefulness. At level 8, Robust Chamber is the safer magazine choice instead of Ingenious Engineering. Both alternatives preserve a more forgiving posture setup, while Tactical Reload remains the level-10 damage option.

Turn the pistol into a burst weapon with Ignite
The most direct way to make a pistol shot feel powerful is to combine Fire-Clad Rounds, Flaming Whetstones and Unstable Blaze. Fire-Clad Rounds load the pistol with the relevant special ammunition. Flaming Whetstones apply the matching fire effect through the Saber. Unstable Blaze makes the reloaded shot consume Ignite and create an area explosion.
Required pieces
- Fire-Clad Rounds: load these into the pistol.
- Flaming Whetstones: use them on the Saber to apply Ignite through melee attacks.
- Unstable Blaze: converts the amplified shot into an explosion when it hits an ignited enemy.
- Tactical Reload: amplifies the first shot after a full reload, giving the explosion its intended burst window.
Exact Ignite rotation
- Equip the Saber with Flaming Whetstones and load Fire-Clad Rounds into the pistol.
- Slash or shoot the target until Ignite is applied. Do not spend the entire magazine before setting up the effect; the reload timing is part of the combo.
- Complete Fire Transmutation with Unstable Blaze so the target is in the state that the pistol shot can consume.
- Perform a full reload. Tactical Reload only amplifies the first shot after a full reload, so partial reload behavior should not be treated as the burst trigger.
- Fire the amplified shot into the burning enemy. Unstable Blaze consumes Ignite and creates the area explosion.
- Collect dropped ammunition or regenerate a round through your sustain tools, then repeat the apply-Ignite, reload and amplified-shot sequence.
Resourcefulness improves this loop because a Saber follow-up after a pistol shot can restore one round. The result is not a conventional high-rate-of-fire gun build: it is a timed status detonation that concentrates damage into a prepared shot and nearby explosion.

Do not fire the special round prematurely at an unignited target and then assume the upgrade failed. The sequence has separate gates: the enemy must be ignited, Fire Transmutation must be completed, the pistol must be fully reloaded and the amplified shot must hit the burning target. Missing any one of those steps turns the expensive setup into a normal-looking shot.
Aim, range and posture in normal encounters
Use weak points as your default target
Enter aim-down-sights mode before firing and place the reticle on a glowing weak point. This is especially important when using Tactical Reload, because wasting the amplified first shot on a body section gives up the largest part of the build’s payoff.
Use the pistol to create a melee opening
Pressure posture from a safe distance, watch the posture meter and close in when it breaks. The level-2 Nephtoglobin posture bullet is listed by GamingProMax at 40 posture damage, described as four times the standard shot. That makes it a posture tool rather than a raw-damage upgrade: it helps produce the break that lets your Saber deliver the decisive punish.
Keep the distance honest
Inside 20 metres, the pistol can deliver its reported full damage. Between 20 and 35 metres, damage falls sharply, reaching 10% at 35 metres. If weak points are small or moving, the practical range can be shorter because misses and body hits compound the falloff. Move closer before concluding that an upgrade failed.
Use cover during the reload window
The four-second base reload is long enough to change the safest position in an encounter. Shoot from cover or after an enemy attack, then reload while the target is staggered, repositioning or fighting the Saber. Sleight of Hand reduces this exposure, but it does not remove the need to choose a safe reload moment.

Use ambers to solve ammunition and reload problems
After choosing the core upgrade path, add ambers according to the part of the loop that is failing.

These choices solve different problems. Lucky Shot and Marksman’s Bane improve ammunition economy; Sleight of Hand improves tempo; Volatile End adds damage to the weak-point behavior you should already be using. They do not all increase the pistol’s listed per-shot number, so evaluate them by the encounter loop they enable.

For a player who misses often, Lucky Shot has value even when its effect is invisible on the damage screen because it gives another attempt before the reload. Marksman’s Bane is more conditional: it is excellent only when the encounter supplies parryable bullets and you can answer them consistently. Volatile End should come after you can already hit weak points reliably; an explosion cannot compensate for repeatedly shooting the body.

Use the direct-damage route if you want the simplest improvement to a weak pistol. Use Ignite when you are comfortable setting up a target before firing. Use posture and parry tools when your damage comes from the break-and-punish sequence. Use sustain ambers when running out of rounds is the main reason an encounter stalls.
A practical encounter sequence
- Open at the correct distance. Move inside 20 metres and identify a lambent blister before spending ammunition.
- Choose the immediate objective. If the posture meter is close to breaking, use the posture bullet or accurate weak-point shots. If Ignite is available, begin the status setup instead.
- Fire only high-value rounds. Do not empty a five-round magazine into center mass simply because the target is visible.
- Switch to the Saber for the payoff. A posture break calls for a melee punish; a Resourcefulness setup also needs the Saber hit to restore a round.
- Reload deliberately. For Tactical Reload, finish a full reload before taking the next shot. Use cover, enemy recovery animations or a stagger to make the four-second window safe.
- Repeat the loop. Collect ammunition after kills, regenerate rounds through your selected sustain tools and return to weak-point or Ignite shots rather than defaulting to body fire.
This sequence explains why the pistol can feel stronger without a dramatic change to its displayed damage. Accuracy supplies resources, melee supplies the punish, and reload timing concentrates the next shot. The weapon is designed around those linked actions.

- Verify the target distance. Move within 20 metres and test the same weak point again. A result near 10% damage at roughly 35 metres is consistent with the reported falloff.
- Fire at a lambent blister. If the shot lands on the body, repeat the test on the glowing red-orange weak point. The pistol’s intended gun loop depends on weak-point hits.
- Check your upgrade path. Tactical Reload requires a full reload before its amplified first shot. Resourcefulness requires a Saber hit after the shot. Ingenious Engineering intentionally changes the magazine to three rounds while speeding reloads.
- Separate normal shots from the burst shot. A regular round and a Tactical Reload round are not equivalent. Test the first shot after a full reload rather than comparing random shots from a partially spent magazine.

- Account for ammunition behavior. Five-round capacity, a four-second base reload and missed shots can make a build feel weaker than its upgrade description suggests. Add Lucky Shot, Sleight of Hand or Marksman’s Bane if the problem is downtime rather than impact.
- Repeat the test with one variable changed. Keep the enemy, distance and aim point consistent while changing only the upgrade or amber under examination. This prevents a missed weak point or a partial reload from being mistaken for a balance problem.
What current evidence does—and does not—show
The 2026 weapon descriptions and developer guidance explain low pistol damage through its utility role, range limits, weak-point requirement and upgrade interactions. They do not verify an official current patch note or bug fix specifically for unexpectedly low pistol damage.
Therefore, treat an unusually low result first as a possible build, distance, target-resistance or weak-point issue. If the same weak-point test at close range still produces a result that conflicts with the listed weapon behavior, check an official balance announcement before assuming the pistol has been permanently changed.
