If audio in an iPhone video sounds quiet or muffled, first remove the case or screen protector and clear visible debris from the microphone openings. Then compare a Voice Memo with short Camera recordings made using each camera. These checks can help distinguish an obstruction or app-specific problem from a symptom that needs service, but they cannot identify a failed component on their own.
1. Remove anything that could block a microphone
Take off the iPhone case, film, or screen protector temporarily. Check the microphone openings for debris and clear them gently. Apple recommends removing coverings and clearing debris; avoid poking openings with sharp objects or using liquids, compressed air, or force.
Make a short video and replay it. Compare it with the original clip if you still have it. If the new recording is clearer, an accessory or obstruction may have been affecting capture.
2. Compare Voice Memos and Camera recordings
Use Apple’s built-in recording tests to see whether the symptom is limited to one recording path. Keep each test short, speak at a normal volume, and replay the results in a quiet place.

- Voice Memos: Record a short memo while speaking toward the bottom of the iPhone.
- Camera: Record a short video while speaking toward the top of the phone.
- Switch cameras: Record again with the other camera, then replay both videos and compare their sound with the memo.
Apple describes these as microphone troubleshooting steps. A difference between recordings can help localize the symptom, but it does not prove which microphone is faulty.
3. Check whether one app is the problem
If Voice Memos and Camera sound clear but a particular app records muffled audio, check whether that app can use the microphone. On current iOS, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and review the app’s access. Menu labels can vary by iOS version; use Settings search for “Microphone” if you cannot find the setting.

If permission is enabled, or the app does not appear in the list, Apple recommends contacting the app developer. A permission change will not fix a problem that also affects Apple’s built-in recording apps.
4. Review Camera sound options for your iPhone model
Recording choices depend on the iPhone model and software. Apple’s current iOS guide says iPhone 16 or later offers Spatial Audio, Stereo, and Mono for video sound recording; earlier iPhone models record in Stereo. On iPhone 16 or later, wind noise is automatically reduced when recording in Spatial Audio or Stereo, and the Wind Noise Reduction setting can be turned off.

Where available, look under Settings > Camera > Record Sound. Do not assume every iPhone has the same choices or toggle: Apple’s current camera documentation also describes turning off Record Stereo Sound on supported models, while newer documentation uses Record Sound choices for iPhone 16 or later. These settings affect recording format or wind-noise handling; they are not guaranteed fixes for low volume or muffled sound.
5. Decide whether an external microphone fits the recording
For a casual clip, the built-in microphone is the simplest option. If you regularly record interviews or presentations, a compatible microphone placed near the speaker may capture their voice more directly. That is a general recording principle, not a tested result for a particular product.

An external microphone is optional, not a repair for a blocked or damaged built-in microphone. Check the specific device and app documentation before buying or relying on one.

If Voice Memos and Camera recordings are still unclear after you remove coverings and check the relevant app permissions and recording options, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Apple’s troubleshooting guide recommends service when the microphone problem persists, but these checks do not determine the cause, affected component, or repair cost.
