If DOOM: The Dark Ages runs slowly or stutters on PC, first check that your system meets the game’s ray-tracing-capable GPU requirement and that it is installed on an NVMe SSD. Then work through Bethesda’s recommended checks: enable Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, disable overlays, update graphics drivers, reduce or reset graphics settings, and make sure the game uses your high-performance GPU. Published performance tiers are targets, not guarantees of perfectly smooth frame pacing in every scene.

Check whether your PC meets the game’s requirements

Bethesda says most game-performance issues can be attributed to hardware. Compare your exact CPU, graphics card and dedicated VRAM, RAM, Windows version, and storage drive against the published tiers before changing settings. The game requires a hardware ray-tracing-capable GPU on PC even at minimum settings.

The following are Bethesda’s published specifications, not independent benchmark results. The 60 FPS figures describe the target for each tier; they do not guarantee a steady frame rate in every scene or on every compatible system. Steam also lists the core CPU, RAM, graphics, and storage requirements.

Tier and target CPU GPU Memory Storage
Minimum: 1080p, 60 FPS, Low AMD Zen 2 or Intel 10th generation, 3.2 GHz, 8 cores/16 threads or better Hardware ray-tracing-capable; 8 GB dedicated VRAM or better (examples: RTX 2060 Super or RX 6600) 16 GB RAM 512 GB or larger NVMe SSD, with 100 GB available
Recommended: 1440p, 60 FPS, High AMD Zen 3 or Intel 12th generation, 3.2 GHz, 8 cores/16 threads or better Hardware ray-tracing-capable; 10 GB dedicated VRAM or better (examples: RTX 3080 or RX 6800) 32 GB RAM NVMe storage
Ultra: 2160p, 60 FPS, Ultra AMD Zen 3 or Intel 12th generation, 8 cores/16 threads or better Hardware ray-tracing-capable; 16 GB dedicated VRAM or better (examples: RTX 4080 or RX 7900 XT) 32 GB RAM NVMe storage

Windows 10/11 64-bit is listed for the minimum tier. The specification page lists 100 GB available storage for minimum; it does not state an available-space figure for the higher tiers. [Bethesda / Slayer’s Club PC specifications; Steam requirements]

If your GPU lacks hardware ray tracing or falls below the minimum VRAM tier, lowering graphics settings may not resolve the underlying hardware mismatch. Consider the entire system and your target resolution before deciding whether an upgrade is needed; a more powerful GPU alone will not address a CPU, memory, or storage shortfall.

Put the game on an NVMe SSD and enable GPU scheduling

Bethesda specifically recommends installing the game on an NVMe solid-state drive, not a hard disk drive. If the game is on an HDD or another drive type, move or reinstall it to an NVMe SSD that meets the published storage requirement. This is a requirement-compliance step, not a guarantee that every stutter will disappear.

Also enable Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling in Windows. Bethesda identifies this setting as a possible remedy for intermittent freezes on supported NVIDIA GPUs. Windows menu wording can vary by version; search Settings for “Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling,” enable it if available, then restart the PC and test the game again. [Bethesda Support: PC performance issues; Bethesda Support: PC troubleshooting and known issues]

Disable overlays and close background apps

Overlays and capture tools can conflict with rendering or stability. For a diagnostic run, turn off Steam Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, and third-party overlays, then close unnecessary background applications that use memory. If performance improves, re-enable tools one at a time to identify the conflict.

  • 3rd Generation Tensor Cores: Get up to 2X the throughput with structural sparsity and advanced AI algorithms such as DLSS. These cores deliver a massive boost in game performance and all-new AI capabilities.
  • Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure.
  • OC Mode : 1500 MHz (Boost Clock)/Default Mode : 1470 MHz (Boost Clock)
  • Disable the Steam Overlay for DOOM: The Dark Ages in the game’s Steam properties.
  • Turn off Xbox Game Bar and any third-party performance, monitoring, or recording overlays temporarily.
  • Close unneeded background apps before launching the game.
  • If you use antivirus software, check whether the game or launcher is being blocked; Bethesda includes antivirus exclusions among its troubleshooting checks.

Pay particular attention to the known issues below if the problem is a freeze, crash, or display hang rather than consistently low frame rates.

Update drivers and reduce or reset graphics settings

Bethesda’s performance support page lists AMD driver 25.5.1 and NVIDIA driver 576.40 as minimum versions in that article. Driver releases and game support change, so check Bethesda’s current guidance and your GPU vendor’s driver page for the applicable current version rather than treating those numbers as permanent recommendations. [Bethesda Support: PC performance issues]

  1. Install a supported current graphics driver for your GPU, following the vendor’s instructions, then restart Windows.
  2. Open DOOM: The Dark Ages’ Graphics settings and lower graphics quality. Test performance before changing several other options.
  3. If the issue began after custom graphics changes, restore the auto-detected settings and test again.
  4. For Steam, use the game’s Launch in Safe Mode option if custom settings prevent a normal launch or make diagnosis difficult.

Lower settings can help when the system has performance headroom limits, but they cannot make unsupported graphics hardware meet the game’s ray-tracing requirement.

Make sure the game uses the high-performance GPU

On laptops and other multi-GPU PCs, the game may be assigned to an integrated or power-saving GPU instead of the primary graphics card. Set the game executable to use the high-performance GPU in NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. Then select a high-performance Windows power profile and connect the laptop to power while playing.

Verify the installation and isolate persistent conflicts

If the basic checks do not help, verify the game files using the instructions for your storefront. Bethesda provides directions for Steam, the Xbox app, and Battle.net. If performance remains poor, try a new Windows user profile; as a later diagnostic step, use Windows Selective Startup to identify a conflicting program. [Bethesda Support: PC performance issues]

Use the workaround that matches the symptom

Bethesda documents several setup-specific problems. These are not universal stutter fixes: apply only the guidance that matches your GPU, settings, and symptom. [Bethesda Support: PC troubleshooting and known issues]

  • RTX 50-series crash with synchronization and Multi Frame Generation: Bethesda describes a crash combination involving G-Sync or V-Sync and Multi Frame Generation configured through NVIDIA Control Panel. Disable one of those options there, or configure both in the game instead of splitting the settings between the game and Control Panel.
  • MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner: Their overlays may cause stability problems. Close or disable them while testing.
  • OBS and Alt-Tab in Fullscreen: OBS capture can freeze visuals when switching windows. Bethesda also says OBS running in the background can crash the game. Close OBS to see whether it is involved.
  • ShadowPlay with RTX 50-series Multi Frame Generation: ShadowPlay combined with 3x or 4x Multi Frame Generation can cause TDRs or hangs on some RTX 50-series GPUs. Disable the relevant capture or generation setting to test.

Bethesda’s performance page also notes that MSI Claw devices and systems using Intel Panther Lake processors are not supported and may have performance issues. If your system falls into either category, routine setting changes may not resolve the problem. [Bethesda Support: PC performance issues]
