You can keep a brutalist palette’s bold colors and still make its text readable: identify each text-and-background pairing that fails, then adjust the text, its background, or the area directly behind the text. Under WCAG 2.2 Level AA, ordinary text needs a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1; qualifying large text needs at least 3:1. A palette’s overall look cannot establish whether a page passes—the rendered pairings have to be checked.
What contrast ratio should your text meet?
For new or updated accessibility work, WCAG 2.2 is the current W3C-recommended reference. A policy that applies to your site may specify an earlier version, so check the requirements that govern your project. The minimum text-contrast criteria in WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.3 are:
| Text type | Minimum contrast ratio (Level AA) |
|---|---|
| Ordinary text | 4.5:1 |
| Large-scale text: at least 18 pt regular or 14 pt bold | 3:1 |
These are thresholds, not targets to round toward. A measured result of 4.499:1 does not meet 4.5:1, according to the W3C’s explanation of the criterion. Use the unrounded result from your analyzer when deciding whether a pair passes.
WCAG’s Level AAA enhanced-contrast criterion sets higher thresholds: 7:1 for ordinary text and 4.5:1 for large text. Black against white has a maximum ratio of 21:1, according to Section508.gov. These figures describe contrast requirements and limits, not a requirement to make every design element maximally contrasting.

How to find which text needs fixing
Check the foreground and background colors for each text treatment in its actual page context. A visually striking palette can contain both readable and unreadable combinations; one failing pair does not mean every palette color needs replacing.
- Inventory the text pairings. List the foreground and background used by body copy, headings, links, buttons, and text in images. Include hover, focus, overlays, and other states that appear on the page.
- Measure each actual pair. Use a contrast analyzer on the colors as they are presented, then compare the unrounded ratio with the threshold for that text size and weight. Visual judgment alone does not establish a pass.
- Check the whole experience. Review relevant page regions and, where applicable, text in online or converted output. Use a repeatable theme or template to reduce the chance that a shared text treatment fails in multiple places.
The applicable contrast check concerns pairs authors expect to appear adjacent in typical presentation. WCAG 2.2 also treats contrast for text separately from contrast for non-text visual information; see the WCAG 2.2 criteria.

How to repair a failing color combination
Adjust the text or its background
For ordinary text, change the foreground color, the background color, or both until the measured ratio is at least 4.5:1. For text that qualifies as large—at least 18 pt regular or 14 pt bold—the minimum is 3:1. Do not shrink text to preserve a palette: smaller text may move into the higher 4.5:1 requirement.
There is no universally correct replacement color. Test the revised pair in the actual layout so the fix preserves the intended visual hierarchy while meeting the relevant threshold.

Stabilize the area behind text on patterns or images
A patterned or photographic background can change luminance behind individual letters, so a pair that looks acceptable in one spot may not work across the text. The W3C’s G145 technique describes ways to create enough contrast behind text: shade the local background, change text luminance as the background changes, or add a halo. Measure the letters against the immediate background where they appear, rather than relying on an average color for the image.
Choose a repair that holds across the page
When more than one fix is possible, compare the options by whether they meet the applicable threshold, how reliably they work over variable backgrounds, how well they preserve the palette’s hierarchy, and whether they remain legible across relevant page regions and output contexts. The W3C presents G145 as an example technique, not a required implementation; content must satisfy the normative criterion, but the technique used is a design choice.

Check color meaning and non-text elements separately
Passing text contrast does not resolve every color-accessibility issue. Do not use color as the sole visual cue for meaning or to distinguish an element—for example, pair color-coded information with labels, shapes, patterns, or another visual indicator. Section508.gov offers practical guidance on accessible color use.
Meaningful icons, controls, and other graphical objects have a separate non-text contrast criterion. WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.11 requires at least 3:1 for specified visual information in user-interface components and graphical objects; that is distinct from the text thresholds above. Consult the WCAG 2.2 standard when checking those elements.

Know which text exceptions are narrow
WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.3 exempts text in inactive user-interface components, pure decoration, text not visible to anyone, certain text inside images with significant other visual content, and text that is part of a logo or brand name. These exceptions apply only within their stated scope; they are not a general waiver for difficult-to-read text.
