Start by isolating the output path. Play the same MLB The Show 26 scene through the TV or soundbar and then through a headset, changing only one setting at a time. If one output is clean, the problem is in that device, its cable or receiver, or console routing—not necessarily in the game. On PS5, check Settings > Sound > Audio Output; on Windows, check the system and per-app mixer, enhancements, format, and driver. MLB The Show 26 launched March 17, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, with early access beginning March 13; its official support page lists English audio and subtitles. No official game-specific audio bug notice or patch workaround is currently published, so these platform-level checks are the reliable starting point.
What the symptom usually means
Loudness, distortion, imbalance, and chat problems can originate in different parts of the signal chain. Treating every symptom as a game bug often leads to unnecessary resets or hardware purchases.
| Symptom | Most useful first check | What a clean comparison tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Everything is suddenly too loud | Lower the active output volume, then verify the selected output device. | If only one output is loud, its volume or processing is responsible. |
| Crackling, clipping, or muffled sound | Try another output and, on Windows, disable enhancements and test a different format. | Clean audio elsewhere points to the original device, cable, receiver, or driver. |
| One side is louder | Check the headset plug, wireless receiver, balance controls, and speaker configuration. | A repeatable left/right fault on one headset indicates hardware or its connection. |
| Commentary, crowd, or music overwhelms voices | Check game/chat balance and master volume on the headset or console. | If only chat is affected, inspect chat routing rather than the game soundtrack. |
| TV sounds fine but headset sounds bad | Confirm the console selected the headset and test a second headset or USB path. | A second headset separates headset hardware from the game and console. |
1. Reproduce the problem before changing anything
Choose one repeatable test: the same menu, a batting-at-bat sequence, or a replay with commentary and crowd audio. Note whether the fault is constant or starts after plugging in a headset, waking the console, joining party chat, or switching inputs on a receiver. Do not change several controls at once; otherwise you cannot tell which change helped.
- Quit MLB The Show 26 completely and relaunch it after each meaningful change.
- Listen through the current output for the same scene at a moderate volume.
- Switch to a second path—TV speakers versus headset, or HDMI audio versus USB headset—without changing the game scene.
- Record whether the fault follows the game, the output device, or the chat session.
This procedure establishes causation without assuming that MLB The Show 26 itself is defective. The documented platform controls below are troubleshooting tools; they are not evidence of a confirmed MLB-specific defect.

2. PS5: verify every audio-output control
On PlayStation 5, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Work from routing to format, then to volume. The labels below are the controls documented by PlayStation Support.
Confirm Output Device
Check Output Device and select the device you are actually listening to. A connected headset can be present while the PS5 continues sending sound to the TV or HDMI receiver. Conversely, removing a headset may leave you listening to a different output than expected. After selecting the device, replay the same test scene.
Check HDMI Device Type
For TV speakers, use the TV setting. For a soundbar or AV receiver, select the appropriate HDMI device type. A wrong device type can produce an incorrect channel layout or unexpected processing, especially when a receiver is connected between the PS5 and display.
Set channels and speaker positions for an AV amplifier
If an AV amplifier is selected, inspect Number of Channels and Adjust Speaker Positions. Enter the number of channels your physical speaker layout actually has, then use the speaker-position adjustment so the PS5’s channel assignment matches the room. A mismatch can make dialogue, commentary, or effects appear to come from the wrong side or sound unusually weak.
Test Audio Format (Priority)
Change Audio Format (Priority) one option at a time and replay the test scene. Keep the option that your TV, soundbar, or receiver handles cleanly. If one format introduces crackling, dropouts, or harsh clipping while another is clean, the issue is compatibility or downstream processing rather than a change to the baseball game’s mix.
Inspect headphone output and volume
When using a controller-connected or USB headset, check Output to Headphones and the headphone-volume control. Make sure the setting is not routing only chat when you expect all audio, and raise or lower the headphone level independently of the TV volume. A low headset level followed by a large amplifier boost can make clipping more noticeable.

3. USB headset comparison on PS5
A USB headset provides a controlled comparison because it bypasses the TV’s speakers, HDMI receiver processing, and often the controller’s analog jack. Sony’s documented route for the INZONE H5 is Settings > Sound > Audio Output > USB Headset (INZONE H5). The exact device name will differ for other USB headsets.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Connect the headset or its USB receiver directly to the PS5.
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the connected USB headset as Output Device.
- Play the same MLB The Show 26 scene used in your original test.
- Check the headset’s master volume and its game/chat balance control.
- Join or leave party chat and repeat the scene to see whether the imbalance appears only when chat is active.
If USB audio is clean while the TV or controller path is distorted, inspect the affected path rather than changing MLB The Show 26 settings. If both paths distort at the same moment, continue with console format checks and a full game relaunch.
4. Fix game-versus-chat imbalance
When gameplay, commentary, crowd noise, or music is disproportionately loud compared with party chat, identify which control is changing. A headset’s game/chat dial may alter the mix independently of the PS5 master volume. Sony’s INZONE guidance specifically calls out game/chat balance, computer master volume, and selecting the correct USB headset output as troubleshooting points.
Use a controlled balance test
- Leave the console and game volume at a comfortable level.
- Have a party member speak while the same game scene plays.
- Move the headset’s game/chat control toward chat, then toward game, noting which component changes.
- Return the control to its center position before making any further diagnosis.
If the dial changes chat but not game audio, it is functioning as a mix control. If it changes neither, verify that the correct headset output is selected and that the headset’s own software or physical controls are not muted. A chat-only fault should not be diagnosed as a distorted game soundtrack.
5. Windows checks for PC-based audio paths
MLB The Show 26’s officially listed platforms are PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, not Windows. The following steps apply when Windows is in the signal path—for example, when you are monitoring a console through a capture setup, using remote-play audio, or troubleshooting a headset connected to a Windows computer. They do not establish that the game has a native Windows release.
Check the system and per-app mixer
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
- Raise System volume and the affected app’s volume independently.
- Confirm the app is not muted and is assigned to the output device you are wearing or listening to.
- Play the same test scene or audio feed again.
An app can be audible in the general mixer while its individual slider is muted or assigned to a different output. Correcting that assignment is reversible and should come before driver changes.

Turn off audio enhancements
In the selected output device’s properties, turn Audio enhancements off. Microsoft notes that enhancements can reduce or distort output volume. Virtual surround, loudness equalization, and vendor effects can also exaggerate clipping or make one channel seem louder, so disable them while diagnosing.
Try another default format
Open the device’s Advanced settings and test another Default format. Use one change at a time and replay the same audio. Microsoft identifies unsupported or incorrect formats as possible causes of distorted, crackling, or poor-quality sound. Keep the format that the device handles consistently, rather than assuming the highest listed setting is best.
Update or reinstall the audio driver
If distortion remains after enhancements and format changes, update the audio driver. Microsoft also identifies outdated or corrupted drivers and stopped audio services as possible causes. If an update does not help, reinstall the device driver through the normal Windows device-management process, restart the computer, and test again. Driver work is less reversible than a volume change, so document the original device and format first.

MLB The Show 26 officially supports Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch, but the available support information does not publish a game-specific audio-slider map or a universal set of console menu labels for every headset and television combination. Use the same isolation method without assuming that a setting exists inside the game.
Xbox Series X|S
- Test the TV or HDMI path and a headset separately.
- Verify that the console is sending audio to the device you are actually using, especially after connecting or removing a headset.
- Check the headset’s own master-volume and game/chat controls.
- Power-cycle the console and the HDMI audio device after recording the current settings.
- If only one headset or one HDMI chain distorts, inspect that hardware, cable, or receiver before reinstalling the game.
Nintendo Switch
- Compare the television or docked HDMI output with a headset path supported by your Switch setup.
- Check the headset’s physical volume, mute, and balance controls.
- Undock and redock the console, then retest the same scene if the fault appears only in docked mode.
- Try a different HDMI cable or display input when the problem affects TV audio only.
These are diagnostic actions, not claims that Xbox or Switch exposes a particular MLB The Show 26 audio option. The absence of a published in-game slider map means console routing and hardware comparisons are the dependable first steps.
7. Follow the symptom-specific branch
If the audio is too loud but clean
- Lower the active output’s volume, not every device in the chain at once.
- Check whether a TV, soundbar, receiver, headset, or Windows enhancement is applying loudness processing.
- Compare another output at the same approximate listening level.
If the alternate output is normal, leave the game unchanged and correct the device or processing that is over-amplifying it.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If the audio is distorted or crackling
- Switch from the affected output to a second path.
- On PS5, test another audio format priority and confirm the HDMI device type.
- On Windows, disable enhancements, test another default format, and then update or reinstall the driver if necessary.
- Inspect cables, USB receivers, controller jacks, and wireless interference.
Distortion that follows one cable, receiver, or headset is a hardware-path problem until proven otherwise.

If one side is louder
- Reseat the headset plug or USB receiver and check for a partially inserted connector.
- Test the same headset on another device.
- For an AV amplifier, verify the channel count and speaker positions in the PS5 audio-output menu.
- Disable surround or enhancement processing while testing.
If the imbalance remains on multiple sources, the headset or speaker is likely failing. If it appears only with one HDMI chain, check that chain’s channel assignment.
If chat is too quiet or game audio dominates
Run the game/chat balance test, verify the selected headset output, and check the headset’s master volume. Do not raise the master volume to compensate for a chat-routing error; that can make game audio clip.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. When hardware is the likely cause
Hardware becomes the leading suspect when the same MLB The Show 26 scene is clean on one output and faulty on another. Inspect the affected TV, soundbar, AV receiver, headset, cable, USB receiver, or controller jack. Look for a loose connector, damaged cable, blocked headset grille, incorrect receiver input, or a wireless receiver that is not fully seated.
Use substitution rather than guesswork: replace one component at a time with a known-good cable, display input, headset, or USB receiver. A Sony INZONE H5 connected through its documented PS5 USB route can serve as a comparison device, but any compatible second output is useful. If both independent outputs reproduce the same clipping at the same moment, return to console routing, format, and software checks.

10. What is and is not confirmed about MLB The Show 26 audio
PlayStation Support identifies the March 17, 2026 launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, with early access beginning March 13, and lists English audio and subtitles. The published support information does not announce a game-specific loudness, crackling, channel-imbalance, or party-chat bug, nor does it provide a detailed in-game audio-slider map. Consequently, a platform or hardware diagnosis is more defensible than attributing every bad sound to the game itself.
Keep the console, display, headset, receiver, and Windows components on their normal current software versions. If a reproducible fault remains after testing two independent output paths and documenting the exact device, connection, and format, report those details to the game’s platform support rather than describing the problem only as “bad audio.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is MLB The Show 26 louder on my TV than in my headset?
The TV or HDMI chain and the headset have separate output-volume and processing controls. Confirm the PS5 or other console is routing to the intended device, then compare both paths at moderate, independently adjusted levels.
Can I fix crackling by changing an in-game MLB The Show 26 setting?
No published support information provides a detailed in-game audio-slider map or a confirmed crackling workaround. Test the console output format, disable Windows enhancements when Windows is involved, and compare another output first.
Why is only the left or right channel louder?
A loose connector, damaged cable, headset fault, or incorrect AV-amplifier channel assignment is more likely than a universal game setting. Reseat the connection, test another device, and verify PS5 channel and speaker-position settings when applicable.
What should I do when party chat is much quieter than game audio?
Use the headset’s game/chat balance control, verify the selected headset output, and check master volume. Test with a party member speaking while the same game scene plays so you can identify which control changes each signal.
