Fix a LEGO game on Steam in the least destructive order: restart Steam and Windows, verify the installation, remove overlays, update graphics and audio drivers, then repair the title’s configuration only after making a backup. A black window with continuing music is usually a display or resolution problem, while silence with a visible game is more often Windows’ per-app audio routing or driver state. The exact files and remedies differ between LEGO releases, so use the branch that matches your symptom and game.

Identify the failure before changing files

LEGO games on Steam span different engines, ports and remasters. A configuration filename that exists for one release may not exist for another, and a community workaround can depend on a particular save, monitor, controller or driver. Start by recording four facts: the exact LEGO title, your Windows version, your graphics processor, and your audio output (built-in speakers, monitor audio, USB headset or another device). Also note the stage at which the problem occurs.

Symptom and stage What to test first Useful distinction
The game crashes immediately or returns to the Steam Play button Restart, verify files, remove overlays and launch options, then update GPU and audio drivers There is no rendered picture or game audio to diagnose yet
A black screen appears while music or cutscene sound continues Resolution and display configuration; back up and repair the title’s configuration Continuing sound indicates that at least part of the game has started
The screen becomes black after selecting a save Back up the game’s local configuration and reset the title-specific files This is a loading/configuration branch, not proof that the save itself is corrupt
The game is visible but has no sound Windows Volume mixer, per-app output selection, default device and audio enhancements Windows can route one app to a different device than the system default
The intended playback device is absent everywhere Windows Audio services and Device Manager, followed by the manufacturer’s driver The problem is at the device or driver layer rather than inside the LEGO game

Older Traveller’s Tales titles are also reported by users as being sensitive to very high frame rates, V-Sync settings or audio routed to a playback device that no longer exists. Those are community observations, not a universal diagnosis for every LEGO release.

When a LEGO game crashes before or immediately after launch

1. Restart Steam and Windows

Exit Steam completely rather than merely closing the window: choose Steam > Exit, wait for the client to disappear, then start it again. Restart Windows as well. This clears a stuck game process, a temporary graphics-driver fault and audio services that did not initialize correctly. Test the game once before making several changes, so you know whether the restart alone helped.

2. Verify the Steam installation

In Steam, open Library, right-click the LEGO game, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Steam compares the installed data with its depot and downloads missing or damaged files. Let the process finish, then launch from the Library. Do not delete the game’s AppData configuration during this step; file verification and configuration reset solve different classes of failure.

3. Remove variables while testing

Temporarily remove nonessential launch options from Properties > General > Launch Options. Disable Steam’s overlay for this test in the same panel, and close other overlays, recording tools and frame-rate counters. Capture software can hook an older game at startup, while an obsolete launch parameter can force an unsupported renderer or resolution. Re-enable tools one at a time after the game is stable to identify a conflict.

4. Update graphics and audio drivers

Install the current driver offered by your graphics processor manufacturer (NVIDIA, AMD or Intel), then install the current audio driver from the computer or sound-card manufacturer. Reboot after installation. A graphics driver update addresses crashes before rendering; an audio driver update addresses initialization failures and missing output devices. Windows Update may not provide the newest package for every model, so use the manufacturer’s support page for the exact computer or sound card.

5. Try a conservative display start

If the title provides a launcher, choose windowed mode or a lower resolution for one test. Do not assume that a resolution accepted by Windows is supported by an older LEGO executable. If there is no launcher, use the configuration-file method in the black-screen section below, but back up the original file first.

6. Reset only the title’s configuration

Many LEGO PC releases store settings below %APPDATA%Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, followed by a folder named for the game. Close the game and Steam, copy the relevant folder to your desktop, and only then rename or remove a configuration file. A renamed backup lets you restore controller, graphics and audio settings if the reset does not help. Folder names and filenames vary by release; do not delete an unrelated Warner Bros. folder or your Steam save data on the assumption that every title uses the same layout.

7. Escalate with reproducible details

If the same title still crashes, use that game’s Steam technical-support page and Warner Bros. Games support workflow. Include the title and edition, Windows version, graphics processor and driver version, audio device, the exact crash stage, whether the Steam Play button returns, and any error text. State which steps you performed. Support can distinguish a title-specific defect from a local installation problem much faster with those details.

How to fix a black screen when music still plays

A black window with opening music or cutscene sound is a documented pattern in LEGO The Hobbit. PCGamingWiki describes the game launching to an unchanged black screen while the opening cutscenes continue to play. That symptom points first to a display mode, resolution or configuration mismatch rather than to a completely failed launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LEGO The Hobbit: repair ScreenWidth and ScreenHeight

  1. Exit the game and Steam.
  2. Open File Explorer and paste %APPDATA%Warner Bros. Interactive EntertainmentLego The Hobbit into the address bar.
  3. Copy pcconfig.txt to a safe backup location. Keep the backup until the game works.
  4. Open the original pcconfig.txt in a text editor and locate the ScreenWidth and ScreenHeight entries.
  5. Change both values to a resolution that your monitor and the game support. Use the same aspect ratio as the display you intend to use; an unsupported combination can reproduce the black screen.
  6. Save the file and launch the game. If the screen remains black, close the game and restore the backup before trying a different supported resolution.

This procedure is specifically documented for LEGO The Hobbit; the presence of a similar file in another LEGO title does not establish that the same values or folder apply.

Black screen after loading a save

A Steam Community guide reports a separate failure in which the display turns black after a save is selected. The reported workaround uses the game’s Warner Bros. folder under %APPDATA% and is also reported to work for LEGO Avengers. Because this is a community procedure rather than a general publisher guarantee, preserve the entire folder before deleting or regenerating local files. A backup protects settings and makes it possible to return to the prior state; it does not guarantee that every title will recreate identical files.

  1. Quit the game and Steam.
  2. Navigate to the title’s Warner Bros. folder below %APPDATA%.
  3. Copy that folder to another location and label it with the date.
  4. Follow the guide’s reset instruction for the affected configuration files, leaving save data untouched unless the title’s instructions explicitly identify it.
  5. Start the game and test the same save. If the reset removes graphics or controller settings, restore individual files from the backup rather than replacing the entire folder blindly.

LEGO Worlds: reinstall only after the checks

A historical Steam announcement for LEGO Worlds advised users with a black screen to fully uninstall and reinstall, then edit pcconfig.txt if a black screen with music remained. Treat that as a title-specific, older discussion—not a guarantee for current builds or other LEGO games. Reinstalling is slower and can leave local configuration behind, so perform file verification and a configuration backup first.

When sound does not continue

A black screen with no audio could be a crash, an audio-routing fault, or both. Apply the crash sequence first, then follow the Windows audio procedure below. Do not infer a resolution problem solely from a black display when there is no evidence that the game reached a cutscene or menu.

How to fix missing audio when the picture works

Microsoft notes that apps can use a different output device from the system default. Windows may therefore send the LEGO game to a disconnected monitor, an old headset or a virtual device even while other applications play normally.

Check the game in Volume mixer

  1. Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer.
  2. Under the apps section, find the running LEGO game. Make sure its volume is not muted and raise its level for testing.
  3. Set the game’s Output device to the speakers or headphones you actually want to use. This can differ from the system-wide default.
  4. Return to the main Sound page and set the intended speakers or headphones as the default playback device.
  5. Turn off audio enhancements for that output and test the game again. Enhancements can interfere with older titles and drivers.

Close and relaunch the game after changing its output. Some older executables choose their device only at startup and will not notice a routing change while already running.

Restart Windows audio services

  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Windows Audio, right-click it, and choose Restart.
  3. Find Windows Audio Endpoint Builder and restart it as well.
  4. Launch the LEGO game and check its Volume mixer entry again.

Restarting these services is reversible and does not alter game files. If the services stop again or cannot start, continue with Device Manager rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.

Repair a missing or disabled playback device

  1. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers. If the intended device is disabled, right-click it and choose Enable device.
  3. If it is not listed, choose Action > Scan for hardware changes.
  4. Install the latest driver supplied by the computer or sound-card manufacturer, then restart Windows.
  5. Set the device as the Windows default and repeat the Volume mixer check.

If Windows cannot detect the device after a scan and a manufacturer driver, the LEGO executable cannot select it. Resolve the hardware or driver detection problem first.

Use a USB headset as a diagnostic, not a graphics fix

A USB gaming headset can provide an alternate output path. If the game becomes audible through it, the original speakers, monitor link or driver path is implicated. This test does not repair graphics crashes or black screens; it only separates an output-device problem from the game’s other failures.

Choose the least risky fix for your symptom

Situation Preferred order Backup or reversibility Scope of evidence
Immediate crash before a window appears Restart, verify files, disable overlays and launch options, update GPU/audio drivers These steps do not alter saves; launch-option and overlay changes are reversible General Steam and Windows troubleshooting
Black screen with continuing music Back up configuration, correct supported resolution, then consider the title’s documented reset Copy pcconfig.txt or the full AppData folder first Documented for LEGO The Hobbit; related reports are title-specific
Black screen after selecting a save Back up the Warner Bros. AppData folder and reset only the relevant local configuration Folder backup allows restoration; keep saves untouched Steam Community workaround, also reported for LEGO Avengers
Black screen in LEGO Worlds with music Verify files and back up settings; reinstall only if needed, then apply the configuration edit Reinstall is disruptive; configuration backup remains reversible Historical LEGO Worlds announcement
Visible game with no sound Volume mixer routing, default device, enhancements, services, then Device Manager Windows routing and service changes are reversible Microsoft Windows guidance

Common mistakes that make troubleshooting harder

  • Deleting files before backing them up: a configuration reset is safer when the original folder is preserved.
  • Assuming every LEGO game uses the same path: engines, ports and remasters differ; confirm the folder belongs to the title being repaired.
  • Reinstalling before checking routing: a game reinstall cannot correct an app-specific Windows output device.
  • Changing several variables at once: test after each major change so you know which action affected the result.
  • Treating a community report as a universal fix: high frame-rate, V-Sync and nonexistent-device reports may apply only to particular older releases and hardware.
  • Assuming a black screen always means a corrupt installation: continuing music is a reason to inspect display configuration first.

What to send to support if nothing works

Use the technical-support page for the individual LEGO game on Steam and the Warner Bros. Games support route. Provide a concise timeline: launch, loading screen, save selection or in-game moment; whether the window is black; whether music or cutscene sound continues; and whether the process returns to the Steam Play button. Add your Windows version, GPU and driver version, audio device and driver, monitor resolution, and the results of file verification. Mention any configuration backup or reset and whether a clean reinstall changed the behavior.

There is no authoritative cross-game crash-rate statistic covering the LEGO catalogue, and no single fix is established for every Steam release. Title-specific evidence is strongest when the symptom, configuration path and game version match exactly; otherwise, keep the least invasive Windows and Steam checks as your baseline.
