Rubber-banding is usually a network-synchronization problem, not a graphics setting. The fastest diagnosis is reversible: check the game and platform status, stop household downloads and streams, restart the modem and router, test the host and affected player over Ethernet, then repeat the same in-game activity. If the problem follows one host, investigate that host’s upload stability, hardware load, distance and firewall settings; if it follows one player, focus on that player’s Wi-Fi or local network.
High latency delays updates, while packet loss drops or retransmits them. Both can make characters snap backward, attacks fail to register, players run in place or disconnect. Work through the steps below in order so you know which change actually helped.
What rubber-banding and lag actually mean
In a co-op survival game, your client predicts movement and sends actions to a server or host. The authoritative system then sends updates back to every player. When those updates arrive late, arrive inconsistently or have to be sent again, your screen is corrected to match the shared game state. That correction appears as a character jumping backward, an enemy teleporting, or an action that seemed to land but did not.

It defines lag as the delay between a player’s action and the server’s reaction.

Latency and packet loss are related but different:
- Latency is the time required for an update to travel between you and the server or host. High latency makes every response arrive late.
- Packet loss means some information never arrives, arrives too late to use, or must be retransmitted. Bungie identifies high latency and packet loss as the most common sources of lag and frequent disconnects.
A low frame rate can make a game look choppy, but it does not normally cause other players to teleport or a server to reject your actions. If the game’s frame rate is stable while movement snaps, attacks fail and everyone freezes together, start with the network tests below rather than changing graphics quality.
The first 10-minute triage
These checks change the fewest variables and can quickly separate an outage from a local connection problem.
- Check service status. Look for an outage affecting the game, its platform or your region. Record any displayed error code before restarting anything. Bungie notes that error codes help players and support partners identify the cause of disconnections.
- Stop competing traffic. Pause game updates, downloads, torrents and high-bandwidth video streams. Ask other household users to pause large transfers temporarily. New World Support says downloads can drastically reduce available bandwidth; Bungie recommends removing other devices or reducing the workload on the router.
- Power-cycle the network. Follow the game’s own procedure when it provides one. New World documents disconnecting modem and router power, waiting 30 seconds, then restarting. Paradox documents a two-minute full-device cycle. These are different instructions for different support articles, so use the interval specified for your game rather than treating either number as a universal rule.
- Test with Ethernet. Connect the host and the affected player directly to the router with Ethernet, then replay the same activity. A Cat6 cable is sufficient for a diagnostic test. Bungie says Wi-Fi introduces much more latency than Ethernet, and New World says wired testing rules out wireless interference and a weak signal.
- Repeat one controlled scenario. Use the same server, world, travel route or combat encounter before and after each change. Note who was hosting, which players were affected, the time, the symptom and any error code. Changing several things at once makes it impossible to tell which fix worked.
Use the symptom pattern to locate the bottleneck
Only one player rubber-bands
Have that player test Ethernet while every other condition stays the same. If the problem disappears, wireless interference, signal strength or local router load is the leading suspect. Stop that player’s background downloads and close applications that continuously transfer data. If the issue remains on Ethernet, test a different router port and, if possible, another network. A problem that follows the player rather than the lobby points away from the host.

Everyone struggles only when one person hosts
In a peer-hosted session, the host’s hardware, upload stability, geographic distance and background load can affect every connected player. Ask another participant to host the same world or an equivalent session. Paradox specifically recommends trying another host when firewall restrictions may differ between players. If the second host is stable, compare the two hosts’ wired connections, upload consistency, CPU and memory headroom, running applications and distance to the other players.

The problem affects every host and every game session
Check for a service or regional outage first. Then test the same computer over Ethernet with all household traffic stopped. Persistent loss on a wired connection can indicate a damaged cable, modem signal problems, ISP congestion or an upstream routing issue. Bungie recommends asking the ISP to check signal levels and infrastructure when packet loss continues.
Only one game or one world is affected
Compare a different server, world or session in the same game. A game-specific outage, a problematic host, incompatible mods or a firewall rule can affect one title while other online services work normally. Keep the error code and the exact session details for the game’s support team.
Stabilize the local network before changing game settings
Remove bandwidth competition
Downloads and streams do not need to saturate the connection to cause trouble. They can fill the router’s queues, leaving interactive game packets waiting behind large transfers. Pause automatic game updates, cloud synchronization, torrents and video streams during the test. If the session improves, reintroduce one activity at a time to find the trigger. The useful result is not a particular bandwidth number—authoritative guidance does not establish a universal minimum for all co-op survival games—but knowing which household activity causes the queue to build.

Restart modem and router correctly
Turn off or unplug the modem and router, wait for the interval recommended by your game’s support article, then power them back on and allow the connection to re-establish fully before launching the game. A restart can clear a stalled device state, but it cannot repair a failing cable, weak signal or congested ISP route. If the same symptoms return immediately on an otherwise idle wired connection, continue to the ISP and hardware checks instead of repeatedly rebooting.

Prefer a wired test
Connect the host first, because instability at the host can be distributed to every player. Then connect the player who reports the symptoms. Keep the same router and game session so the cable is the only meaningful change. New World Support says a wired connection rules out wireless interference and weak wireless signal; Bungie calls Ethernet an important first step because Wi-Fi generally adds latency.
Check the host’s capacity, distance and connection quality
Peer hosting combines game simulation and network service on one player’s machine. A host that is busy saving a world, compiling shaders, streaming video or running other applications may have less CPU, memory or upload headroom for the session. Close unnecessary applications and watch whether the symptoms correlate with a heavy workload. Klei’s troubleshooting guidance specifically identifies host hardware, bandwidth and geographic distance as factors that influence every connected player.
Distance cannot be fixed with a graphics setting. A different host who is geographically closer to most participants may reduce delay, while a host on a more stable wired connection may reduce loss. Change one host at a time and replay the same activity so the comparison is meaningful.
Klei recommends joining servers that show a ping of 150 or below for optimal network performance. That is Klei’s game-specific guidance for its server list, updated July 21, 2026—not a universal threshold for every survival game. Other games may use different regions, transport methods and tolerances.

Rule out mods and background software
Test without mods
Disable every mod on the host and clients, then run the same session. Klei documents disabling mods as a troubleshooting step. If the unmodded session is stable, re-enable one mod at a time and test after each change. A mod that changes world simulation, entity counts, networking or save behavior can expose synchronization problems that do not occur in a vanilla session.
Close unnecessary applications
Quit browsers with active streams, launchers downloading updates, cloud-sync tools and other programs that consume CPU, memory or network capacity. New World Support recommends closing bandwidth-heavy applications, and Klei recommends closing unnecessary background applications. On PC, verify the game’s files after software changes when the game provides that option; New World lists file verification as a PC troubleshooting step.
Firewall, NAT and port-forwarding escalation
Do not begin by opening ports. First confirm that the game executable and its launcher are allowed through the operating system and router firewall. Test with the firewall configuration that the game’s official documentation supports, and restore protections after any temporary diagnostic change.

NAT behavior and required ports differ by title and platform. Only use port numbers published for the specific game. For example, Paradox documents UDP ports 17780–17785 for Stellaris; that range must not be generalized to another survival game. If manual forwarding is required, reserve a stable local address for the gaming device, forward only the documented ports, and remove the rule if it does not help.

Changing NAT settings cannot compensate for a weak Wi-Fi link or ISP packet loss. If a wired test still shows loss with no competing traffic, return to the ISP and hardware checks rather than adding more forwarding rules.

A dedicated server moves the simulation away from a player’s computer. It can help when the peer host lacks CPU or memory headroom, has unstable upload service, is far from most players, or must leave the game running independently. It helps only if the server has adequate hardware and a better network path to the players. A dedicated server cannot repair a player’s bad local Wi-Fi connection, damaged Ethernet cable or congested ISP link; that player will still lose or delay packets on the way to the server.
Before moving a world, confirm that the game supports dedicated servers, that the server build matches the clients, and that your mods are supported in that environment. Check the server’s region and displayed ping for each participant. If the game does not support dedicated hosting, changing the peer host is the practical equivalent test.

Use the model change as an experiment, not as an automatic cure. If a LAN session is smooth but internet play is not, investigate the WAN path, host geography or ISP. If LAN also stutters, focus on the host machine, local network and game software.
A repeatable troubleshooting workflow
Use this sequence whenever the problem returns. Stop when the symptom is resolved, and record the result of the last successful step.
- Write down the game, platform, region, session type, host, affected players, time and error code.
- Check the game and platform status pages for an active outage.
- Stop all household downloads, streams, torrents and updates.
- Power-cycle the modem and router using the game’s documented wait interval.
- Connect the host and affected player by Ethernet and repeat the same activity.
- Have another player host the same world or an equivalent test session.
- Close unnecessary applications, disable every mod and verify PC game files if supported.
- Confirm firewall permissions, then consult the game’s official NAT, UPnP and port instructions.
- Try a supported LAN or dedicated-server session when the game offers one.
- Contact the ISP or game support if packet loss or disconnects persist, attaching your timeline and test results.
What to send support or your ISP
A precise report prevents repeated generic advice. Include the exact error code, platform and game version if shown, whether the session was peer-hosted, dedicated or LAN, who hosted, which players were affected, the region or server name, and the time and frequency of the incidents. State whether downloads were stopped, whether Ethernet changed the result, whether another host helped, whether mods were disabled and whether the issue occurs in other games.
For an ISP, explain that the problem persists (or does not persist) on a wired connection with household traffic stopped. Ask for modem signal-level and infrastructure checks, as Bungie recommends for ongoing packet loss. For game support, include the host’s hardware load, NAT status and any firewall or port changes, while avoiding permanent security changes that the game does not document.

Preventing a repeat
- Use Ethernet for the host whenever practical; keep a spare Cat6 cable for quick comparison.
- Schedule large downloads and updates outside co-op sessions.
- Keep the host’s background applications and upload workload low.
- Agree on a backup host before a long shared world session.
- Keep mods synchronized and test updates without mods before adding them back.
- Save the game’s official firewall, NAT and port instructions rather than copying settings from another title.
- Record the server region and displayed ping when choosing a host or dedicated server.
