Fixing Old School RuneScape performance starts with identifying the symptom. High ping, delayed clicks, freezes that suddenly catch up, and disconnects are usually connection-path problems. A consistently low frame rate, visual corruption, or stutter that remains when your connection is stable points to graphics or computer performance. Input that feels slow can also come from VSync or a display with a low refresh rate.

Use the decision path below: check service status, compare worlds, measure whether the problem is network or frame-rate related, then change one setting at a time. That prevents a graphics fix from masking a routing fault and gives you useful evidence if Jagex Support needs to investigate.

First, identify what “lag” means in your case

Players use lag to describe several different failures. Jagex’s diagnostic guidance separates poor connection, graphical problems, and input lag because each requires a different fix.

What you notice Most likely branch What to measure or compare
High ping, delayed actions, movement arriving in bursts, or a freeze followed by your character catching up Connection Whether the issue affects every world, only certain worlds, or only certain times
Repeated client disconnects or login failures while other game actions are normal Connection or service availability Jagex service status, exact error, time, world, and whether other internet services also fail
Low frame rate everywhere, choppy camera movement, or stutter that does not track with ping Graphics or computer performance Frame rate and frame-time behavior before and after graphics changes
Clicks and camera movement feel delayed even when frame rate and ping are steady Input/display path VSync state, monitor refresh rate, and whether the same action feels different on another display
Warped, missing, or incorrectly coloured textures Cache or graphics path Whether clearing the game cache restores normal textures

Jagex defines ping as the number of milliseconds required for a small packet to travel from your computer to a server and return. A longer round trip normally indicates a problem somewhere between your system and Jagex’s servers; it is not a measurement of your GPU’s speed.

Run this five-minute triage before changing settings

  1. Check service status first. Look at the official Jagex or Old School service-update channels for an outage or maintenance notice. If the service is degraded, local graphics changes will not restore a server connection.
  2. Write down the pattern. Note the date and time, the world you were using, the exact symptom, and whether the issue repeats. “Only one world” and “only during a particular time window” are important clues.
  3. Compare several worlds. Move to other worlds and see whether the delay or disconnect follows you. A problem limited to particular worlds or times is more consistent with routing or a server path than with your graphics settings.
  4. Separate ping from frame rate. If actions are delayed but the scene remains smooth, investigate the connection. If the camera and animations remain visibly choppy while actions arrive promptly, investigate FPS and frame time.
  5. Remove competing traffic for one test. Pause large downloads, cloud synchronization, video streams, and other heavy network activity where practical. Use a stable broadband connection and repeat the same in-game action.

Change only one variable between tests and record the result. A short note such as “World A, 20:00 UTC, delayed clicks; World B normal” is more useful than a general statement that the game is “laggy.”

How to fix high ping and network lag in OSRS

When only some worlds or times are affected

If one world is consistently problematic while others are responsive, keep the comparison in your notes and use a different world temporarily. The pattern suggests a route or server-path condition rather than a weak graphics card. It is also useful to test at another time of day: a time-dependent pattern can indicate congestion outside your computer.

When every world is slow

  • Confirm that the official service-status information does not show an incident.
  • Stop other high-bandwidth activity on the same connection and test again.
  • Use the most stable broadband connection available and avoid moving between connections while you are trying to isolate the fault.
  • Check whether websites and other online services fail at the same time. If they do, the problem is broader than OSRS; if they do not, preserve the OSRS-specific timing and world information for support.

Do not treat a DNS change, a new router, or a particular cable as a guaranteed cure. Jagex’s guidance supports diagnosing the connection path, but it does not identify one router, DNS service, or cable as universally superior.

When the game freezes and then catches up

A freeze followed by several actions executing at once is a classic connection symptom when the client has stopped receiving timely updates. Check other worlds and the service status before lowering graphics quality. If frame rate is also poor, perform the graphics checks in the next sections; both problems can coexist.

How to stop repeated OSRS disconnects

Capture evidence instead of guessing

For each disconnect, record the exact on-screen error, the time, the world, what you were doing, and whether other internet services remained available. This distinguishes a client or account message from a dropped network path and gives Jagex Support a reproducible pattern.

  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

Use a controlled retry

  1. Check the official service updates.
  2. Close competing network applications.
  3. Reconnect using the same connection and a different world.
  4. Repeat at a different time if the problem appears scheduled.
  5. Keep the error and timing notes even if the retry succeeds.

A successful login on another world does not prove that your computer is healthy or that the original world is faulty; it is evidence about where the failure may be occurring. Escalate to Jagex Support after these local checks, including the complete notes rather than only the number of disconnects.

How to fix low FPS and stutter

Verify the computer and lower the load

Start by checking that the device meets Jagex’s recommended specifications. If the hardware is struggling, lower the game’s graphics settings and repeat the same camera movement or activity. A setting change is reversible, so it is a safer first test than purchasing hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Close applications that are consuming substantial CPU or GPU resources.
  • Install current graphics drivers from the GPU manufacturer.
  • Confirm which graphics processor the client is using.
  • Lower demanding visual settings and check whether frame rate becomes stable.

Jagex warns that selecting integrated graphics instead of a dedicated GPU can produce low FPS and other performance problems. On a laptop or hybrid system, the operating system may launch the game on the low-power integrated processor even when a dedicated GPU is installed. Verify the selected processor in the relevant graphics-control settings rather than assuming the faster adapter is active.

Distinguish low average FPS from stutter

A low but steady frame rate feels consistently slow. Stutter is a series of uneven frame times: the average may look acceptable while movement pauses briefly. Test the same scene after each change and note whether the pauses become less frequent, not only whether a displayed FPS number rises.

Clear the cache when textures are damaged

Warped, missing, or incorrectly coloured textures are a reason to clear the game cache. Cache corruption is a different failure mode from a slow internet route, so use this step for visual corruption rather than as a general network remedy. Relaunch the client after clearing the cache and check the same area where the problem appeared.

Use Safe Mode only as a diagnostic fallback

Old School Safe Mode renders with the CPU instead of the graphics card. Jagex notes that it will generally have low FPS, so it is not a performance upgrade. It can help determine whether the normal graphics path is responsible: if visual problems disappear in Safe Mode but frame rate falls sharply, the GPU path or its driver deserves attention. Return to the normal mode after the test.

Fix low FPS and lag in RuneLite

Check the GPU plugin’s requirements

RuneLite’s GPU plugin requires Windows 7, 8, 10, or 11, macOS, or Linux; a GPU supporting OpenGL 4.3 or newer; and 2 GB of VRAM. Supported hardware includes Nvidia, AMD, and Intel GPUs. Keep the graphics driver current before troubleshooting the plugin.

Requirement Minimum stated by RuneLite’s GPU FAQ Why it matters
Operating system Windows 7–11, macOS, or Linux The plugin depends on a supported platform and graphics stack
Graphics API OpenGL 4.3 or newer Older implementations cannot provide the required rendering features
Video memory 2 GB of VRAM Insufficient VRAM can cause instability or poor rendering performance
GPU vendors Nvidia, AMD, or Intel hardware The driver and selected adapter still need to be correct

If the GPU plugin is disabled or very slow

  1. Confirm that the installed RuneLite build matches your system’s 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, particularly on Nvidia systems.
  2. Open NVIDIA Control Panel and select the Nvidia GPU for RuneLite instead of allowing the system to use integrated graphics.
  3. Update the GPU driver and restart the client.
  4. Re-test with the same scene and plugin settings.

If the plugin switches itself off or remains extremely laggy, do not keep forcing it on. The architecture, selected adapter, driver, and OpenGL/VRAM requirements should be checked first.

If enabling the plugin crashes RuneLite

RuneLite’s FAQ advises disabling hardware acceleration and checking the requirements when enabling the GPU plugin crashes the client. Treat this as a diagnostic change, not a permanent performance recommendation: hardware acceleration can be useful when the supported GPU path works correctly.

Isolate a plugin conflict

Temporarily disable recently added Plugin Hub plugins and reproduce the issue with a clean profile. You can also compare with the official client. This controlled comparison identifies whether a plugin or profile setting is involved; it does not establish that one client is universally faster than the other. Re-enable plugins one at a time after the problem is gone so the conflicting addition can be identified.

Use the Jagex Launcher integration

When launching RuneLite through Jagex’s ecosystem, follow Jagex’s documented RuneLite integration path. Using the supported launcher flow keeps account and client selection separate from unrelated performance experiments.

Should you turn off VSync?

Yes, turning off VSync is a reasonable reversible test when FPS is low or controls feel delayed. Jagex explains that VSync synchronizes the game’s FPS with the monitor’s refresh rate and can reduce FPS by up to 50%. That is a stated upper bound, not a promise that every system loses half its frame rate.

  1. Open the client’s graphics settings.
  2. Locate VSync.
  3. Turn it off.
  4. Repeat the same camera movement and click-based action.
  5. Compare frame rate, stutter, and perceived input delay with the previous setting.

Disabling VSync can improve responsiveness, but it may also expose tearing. If the test makes the game visibly worse, restore VSync and investigate the GPU, driver, and display path instead. VSync cannot repair high ping, a bad route, a world outage, or a Jagex service incident.

Input lag: monitor, refresh rate, and game settings

Input lag is the delay between an action and the visible response. Jagex notes that a monitor generally has a higher refresh rate than a television and should improve input lag. A gaming monitor is therefore relevant when the game feels slow to respond despite stable ping and adequate FPS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use a monitor with a higher refresh rate than the television you are replacing, where your hardware can sustain the desired frame rate.
  • Test VSync on and off rather than assuming one setting is best for every display.
  • Keep the client on the GPU that can render the game consistently.
  • Compare the same action on the old and new display before deciding that the network is at fault.

A faster monitor cannot fix disconnects, high ping, routing faults, or server outages. It changes the display and input path only.

A practical comparison of fixes

Fix or test Symptom class Reversible? Client scope Evidence to check
Check service status Connection or outage Yes Official client and RuneLite Incident notice and matching timing
Compare worlds and times Connection Yes Both clients Whether the issue follows a world or time window
Stop competing traffic Connection Yes Both clients Ping and responsiveness with other traffic paused
Lower graphics settings Graphics Yes Both clients More stable frame times in the same scene
Select the dedicated GPU Graphics Yes Both clients FPS and frame-time change after adapter selection
Update GPU drivers Graphics Mostly; keep a rollback option Both clients Whether crashes, corruption, or low FPS change
Clear the cache Texture corruption Yes, after files are rebuilt Official client and RuneLite Textures render normally after relaunch
Disable VSync FPS or input lag Yes Client graphics settings FPS, tearing, and click responsiveness
Use Safe Mode Graphics diagnosis Yes Official client Whether visual faults disappear while FPS drops
Try a higher-refresh-rate monitor Display/input lag No; hardware purchase Both clients Perceived response on the same stable connection

How to measure whether a fix worked

Use a repeatable scenario rather than relying on memory. Record the world, time, client, graphics mode, VSync state, and the activity you performed. For connection tests, note whether clicks arrive promptly and whether the client freezes or disconnects. For graphics tests, use the same camera movement and area, then compare FPS and the smoothness of frame delivery. For input tests, keep the display and game scene constant while changing only VSync or the monitor.

A fix is credible when the symptom changes in the branch it should affect: a world change may alter ping, a GPU selection may alter FPS, and VSync may alter responsiveness. If a graphics change appears to fix a world-specific disconnect, repeat the world comparison before drawing a conclusion.

When to contact Jagex Support

Contact support when service checks, world comparisons, controlled connection tests, and basic client diagnostics do not explain the problem. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The exact error text or a precise description of the freeze.
  • Date and time, including your time zone.
  • The affected world numbers or names and whether other worlds worked.
  • Whether the problem occurred in the official client, RuneLite, or both.
  • Whether other internet services failed simultaneously.
  • Your graphics mode, VSync state, GPU selection, and any recent driver or plugin change.
  • What changed after each test.

This information lets support distinguish a service-side or route-specific problem from a client, driver, or hardware issue without asking you to repeat every test from the beginning.

Quick decision checklist

  • High ping or delayed actions: check service status, compare worlds, pause competing traffic, and document the route pattern.
  • Disconnects: save the exact error, time, world, and broader internet status before escalating.
  • Low FPS: verify recommended specifications, lower graphics settings, select the dedicated GPU, update drivers, and close competing workloads.
  • RuneLite GPU problems: verify OpenGL 4.3 or newer, 2 GB of VRAM, the correct build, the selected Nvidia GPU where applicable, and current drivers.
  • Crashes after enabling the GPU plugin: disable hardware acceleration temporarily and re-check requirements.
  • Warped or missing textures: clear the game cache and relaunch.
  • Delayed input with stable ping: test VSync and use a higher-refresh-rate monitor rather than changing network hardware.
