Most Just Dance lag and missed gestures come from one of four causes: an input device that the specific edition does not support, two controller methods competing at once, phone-and-console discovery problems, or motion hardware that needs calibration. Start by identifying the exact edition and platform, test one supported controller by itself, then repair the connection or calibrate the hardware. A song that plays smoothly while gestures are missed is usually a local tracking problem, not an internet-speed problem.
What “lag” means in Just Dance
Players use “lag” for several different symptoms. Separating them prevents you from changing the wrong setting.

Online or menu delays
If menus take a long time to load, online features disconnect, or an online song session stutters, treat it as a connectivity issue first. Ubisoft’s Just Dance connectivity guidance addresses slow connection speed and online-service problems. Those symptoms do not prove that the motion sensor is late.

Missed gestures during an otherwise smooth song
When the song, animation and menus run normally but your score records missed moves, the likely paths are controller compatibility, pairing, calibration, phone discovery, phone handling or a failing sensor. This is a troubleshooting inference from the symptom pattern, not a published Ubisoft diagnostic rule. It is useful because it tells you to test the input path before troubleshooting your broadband connection.
#1 Best Overall
- Introducing Joy-Con, controllers that make new kinds of gaming possible, for use with Nintendo Switch.
- The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
- Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
- Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.
Input that feels delayed from the start
A controller that connects slowly, repeatedly drops, or responds inconsistently can feel like timing lag. Eliminate unsupported devices and mixed-controller sessions before looking for a display-delay explanation. Official support pages do not publish one universal Just Dance television or audio offset in milliseconds, so there is no evidence-based number that applies to every console, display and edition.
Confirm the exact edition and platform before changing anything
Motion support is edition-specific. Write down the Just Dance version shown on the title screen and the console model, then compare them with the supported input path.
| Edition or platform path | Motion input documented by Ubisoft | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Just Dance 2025 on Nintendo Switch | Nintendo Switch Joy-Con or the Just Dance Controller app | Use one method at a time while diagnosing. Other devices may not be supported for motion play. |
| Just Dance 2025 on PlayStation 5 | Just Dance Controller app | DualSense is listed for menu navigation only, not as the motion input for dancing. |
| Just Dance 2025 on Xbox Series X|S | Just Dance Controller app | Xbox Wireless Controller is listed for menu navigation only, not as the motion input for dancing. |
| Just Dance 2022 legacy paths | Older Kinect and PlayStation Move/Camera paths are documented by Ubisoft for the relevant platforms | Do not assume a legacy accessory works with a newer edition; verify the edition’s own support page. |
Ubisoft’s Just Dance 2025 support information, updated 17 September 2025, lists Joy-Con and Just Dance Controller on Switch, and Just Dance Controller on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A DualSense or Xbox Wireless Controller can navigate menus in those listings but is not a substitute for a supported motion device. An unsupported phone, controller or third-party bridge may connect, yet it is not a dependable baseline for diagnosing missed moves.
Run a clean one-controller test
Before changing network settings or buying hardware, remove variables. The goal is to reproduce the same song with exactly one supported input method active.
- Close the current dance session and return to the controller-selection screen.
- Choose either Joy-Con, the Just Dance Controller app, or the supported legacy device for your edition. Do not select more than one path.
- Disconnect or power down every other supported peripheral that could be detected.
- Play a short section of the same song and note whether the miss is constant, intermittent, or limited to connection and menu behavior.
Ubisoft states that the Just Dance Controller app cannot be used in combination with other supported peripherals. Leaving a Joy-Con connected while also running the phone app can therefore invalidate the test. For an app test, stop the Joy-Con path; for a Joy-Con test, close the app and use only the Joy-Con.
How to fix Just Dance phone controller lag
Phone control depends on both app discovery and a local network path. Perform Ubisoft’s setup sequence in order rather than repeatedly restarting the app at random.
Use the official discovery sequence
- On the game’s controller-selection screen, choose Mobile Device.
- Open the matching Just Dance Controller app on the phone.
- Tap Play.
- When prompted, select I did it!.
- Select the game version shown by the app.
- Allow the app to search for the platform and wait for the console to appear.
Skipping the edition selection or starting the app before the game is waiting for a mobile device can leave the phone looking for the wrong session. If discovery fails, repeat the sequence from the game’s controller screen instead of creating a second app session.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsVerify the Wi-Fi relationship
- Connect the phone and the console to the same Wi-Fi network. Ubisoft’s support wording is explicit: “Please make sure that your platform and your mobile device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.”
- Confirm Wi-Fi is enabled on the phone and that the phone has not silently switched to cellular data.
- If the console uses an Ethernet cable, make sure that cable terminates at the same router or home network as the phone’s Wi-Fi, rather than at an isolated guest or secondary network.
- Temporarily avoid guest-network isolation, which can allow internet access while preventing devices from discovering one another locally.
The last point is a practical network check: the requirement is local network membership, not merely internet access. If the phone and console can browse the internet but cannot discover each other, check whether the router separates wireless clients from wired devices.
Keep the phone path isolated
Disconnect other supported controllers while testing the app. Ubisoft’s current app-requirements entry, updated 13 October 2026, says the app cannot be combined with other supported peripherals. A clean app-only session tells you whether the problem is discovery, phone sensing or a different controller.
Check phone handling after connection succeeds
Once the app connects, keep the phone in the same secure grip and orientation for the entire test. A loose grip, a pocket that blocks movement, or changing hands between gestures can create misses that look like network lag. Compare a short, repeatable sequence rather than judging an entire song after one unusual move. If the app remains connected and the song is smooth but the same gestures are repeatedly missed, move to the compatibility and calibration checks rather than repeatedly reconnecting Wi-Fi.
How to fix missed moves with Nintendo Switch Joy-Con
Joy-Con is an officially supported Just Dance 2025 motion input on Switch. The first hardware remedy is calibration, performed with the controller uncovered and motionless.
Calibrate motion controls
- Update the Nintendo Switch system software.
- Remove wrist straps, shells, grips and other accessories from the Joy-Con or Pro Controller.
- Open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Motion Controls.
- Hold the controller as the console requests, then place it flat on a stable surface when prompted.
- Leave it still until calibration completes. Nintendo’s instruction is: “Place the controller with the stick facing upward on a flat, stable surface and wait for a moment.”
- Return to Just Dance and test the same song with no phone app or second controller active.
Calibration must be done on a surface that does not move. Do not rest the controller on a soft couch, hold it in your hand while the calibration screen is waiting, or leave a strap pressing against it. Those conditions can give the system a bad reference position.
Use an A/B test after calibration
Repeat the exact section that produced misses. If the same Joy-Con now registers the gesture, the problem was probably its motion reference rather than online speed. If misses remain, test another supported Joy-Con, if available, without changing the song or room conditions. A second controller that works in the same session points toward the original unit; both controllers failing points back to edition support, setup or the game path.
Reset a Pro Controller that still misses movements
Nintendo’s Pro Controller procedure is a reset-and-recalibrate sequence, not an immediate replacement recommendation.
- Verify that the Pro Controller is paired with the Switch and has sufficient charge.
- Press the controller’s SYNC button once.
- Press another button to wake it and reconnect.
- Remove any skin, cover or accessory that could interfere with the controller.
- Run System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Motion Controls on a flat, stable surface.
- Retest motion in Just Dance and, if possible, in another supported game.
If motion fails in other supported software or calibration repeatedly fails, Nintendo’s documented next step is service. At that point, repeated pairing attempts are unlikely to repair a sensor or calibration fault. Record the failure and the calibration result before contacting support.

Rank #3
- Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
- Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
| What you observe | Most useful next check | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Menus or online services load slowly, disconnect or fail | Follow Ubisoft’s slow-connection troubleshooting and verify the console’s network path | The symptom is in online service delivery, not necessarily motion sensing. |
| Song playback is smooth, but gestures are marked missed | Check edition support, isolate one controller, then repair phone discovery or calibrate motion hardware | This pattern points toward the local input path; that conclusion is a troubleshooting inference. |
| Phone does not find the platform | Repeat the Mobile Device setup and verify both devices share the same Wi-Fi network | Discovery must succeed before motion data can be evaluated. |
| Joy-Con or Pro Controller works intermittently | Remove accessories, reconnect, calibrate and test another supported controller | Pairing, physical coverings and calibration can all affect a clean motion test. |
| Only an unsupported controller is available | Switch to a device listed for the exact edition, or treat the result as inconclusive | Third-party software or unsupported hardware is not a dependable diagnostic baseline. |
There is no single official millisecond delay value that you can apply to every television, console and edition. Avoid “fixes” that promise a universal offset without identifying the exact hardware and software path.

The trade-offs below explain why the troubleshooting order differs by input method.
| Input method | Edition/platform compatibility | Network dependency | Can another peripheral stay active? | Primary reset or calibration control | Service or replacement path |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Switch Joy-Con | Listed for Just Dance 2025 on Nintendo Switch | Not required for the controller’s local motion sensing once the game is running, although online features still need connectivity | No; disable the phone app while testing | Switch motion calibration under Controllers and Sensors | Test another officially supported Joy-Con pair; seek Nintendo service if the fault follows the controller |
| Just Dance Controller app | Listed for Switch, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in the Just Dance 2025 support information | Yes; phone and platform must share the same Wi-Fi network for discovery and control | No; Ubisoft says the app cannot be combined with other supported peripherals | Repeat Mobile Device discovery sequence; then check phone handling | Provide Ubisoft with connection details, device information and video evidence |
| DualSense or Xbox Wireless Controller | Listed for menu navigation only in the Just Dance 2025 support information | Console network behavior is separate from motion support | Not a motion baseline for this edition | None for Just Dance motion tracking; use a supported motion input | Do not diagnose missed dance moves with this controller |
| Legacy Kinect or PlayStation Move/Camera | Documented by Ubisoft for relevant Just Dance 2022 paths | Depends on the platform and online feature being used | Use only the method supported by that edition | Follow the edition-specific setup; do not apply 2025 assumptions | Check the older platform’s documented hardware support before replacing anything |
When a replacement or service decision is justified
Do not replace hardware until it has passed the basic isolation steps. A replacement Joy-Con pair is a reasonable next test when the current Joy-Con repeatedly fails calibration or misses the same motions while another supported controller works. Use an officially supported Joy-Con pair so the new test does not introduce an edition-compatibility variable.
Service is the appropriate escalation when Nintendo’s calibration fails repeatedly, or when the controller’s motion also fails in other supported software. For the phone app, a hardware replacement is premature if the phone never completed discovery; first correct the same-Wi-Fi requirement and remove competing peripherals.
Prepare a useful support case
If the problem survives the clean test, calibration and discovery steps, collect evidence before contacting Ubisoft or Nintendo. Ubisoft asks for detailed case information and a video link when investigating issues.
- Exact Just Dance edition and platform model.
- Controller type and, for phone control, the phone model and operating-system version.
- The controller-selection screen showing the method you selected.
- Whether the phone and console were on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Whether another peripheral was disconnected during the test.
- The calibration result, including any failure message.
- A short video showing the connection state and one reproducible missed move.
- Whether the same controller fails in another supported game or whether another supported controller works in Just Dance.
Keep the clip short enough to show the setup and the miss clearly. A support agent can do more with one reproducible comparison than with a claim that the game “feels delayed.”
Fast troubleshooting checklist
- Identify the exact edition and console.
- Use only an input method listed for that edition.
- Disconnect every other controller while testing.
- For a phone, select Mobile Device, open the app, choose Play, confirm I did it!, select the game version and wait for discovery.
- Put the phone and console on the same Wi-Fi network; check guest-network or wired-to-wireless isolation.
- If songs are smooth but moves are missed, treat the issue as local tracking first; this is an evidence-based inference, not a universal rule.
- On Switch, update the console, remove accessories and calibrate under System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Motion Controls.
- For a Pro Controller, verify charge and pairing, press SYNC once, reconnect with another button, remove coverings and recalibrate.
- If calibration fails or motion also fails in other supported software, arrange Nintendo service.
- For persistent app or peripheral faults, capture the setup and missed move on video and provide the edition, platform, phone and controller details to support.
The practical fix
The dependable path is not a universal latency setting. Match the controller to the edition, run one input method at a time, repair same-network phone discovery, and calibrate Switch motion hardware on a stable uncovered surface. Those checks distinguish an unsupported setup from a network discovery failure and from a controller that genuinely needs service.
